A very enjoyable bad movie.

Jordan (Demi Moore) is chosen as the first woman to be admitted into the navy seals. Shes ambitious and determined to succeed despite most of the guys goosing her and trying to get her to fail. Shes also being secretly sabotaged by a sassy senator.

Very one note, quite silly and incredibly predictable but actually very easy to watch and a real guilty pleasure. The scene where she fights Viggo Mortensen and asks him to give her a blowjob is classic and you cant help but pop when the soldiers start cheering her on. Oohra! Also the scene where she gets the medal in her locker and sees Viggo turn and look at her is legit the hardest ive laughed at anything all year. What a stupid fucking moment. Good stuff.

"What do you want to go off and play soldier girl for?"

I liked the part with the crabs.

G.I. Jane is basically two hours of macho military glorification with a half-baked feminist angle. Textually critical of the US navy's sexism, but somewhat less than progressive itself. Ostensibly opposed to the "old fashioned" views it deals with, but without examining the ones in its own script or behind its cameras.

There's a message here, but it's muddled and badly delivered, with a lot of blatant sexism and homophobia thrown in for good measure. Lt. O'Neil (Moore) is selected for SEAL training solely because she doesn't look too muscular and butch in her file photo, and then later in the movie is accused of being a lesbian because she was photographed sitting next to a woman.

The other SEAL candidates spend most of the movie either mocking her or becoming unreasonably angry that she merely exists near them, until Viggo Mortensen's character beats the shit out of her and threatens to rape her. For some reason this causes them all to immediately give her their unconditional support. At the end she forgives him for everything because... SHE saves HIS life? Yeah...

I love how the SEAL training is just a big montage of hyper masculine boot boys frolicking in the water and yelling. They crawl through a flaming barrel filled obstacle course while their training officer fires live rounds at them with a sniper rifle for some reason.

They then literally waterboard them while talking about how effective waterboarding is. Later in their training, in a scene straight out of Final Fantasy VIII, they are taken in a submarine and sent on a real combat mission in which invade Libya and kill a bunch of people. All part of the training, I guess?

The final battle scene was among the worst shot and edited I have ever seen in a mainstream movie. The camera was not only jittering violently, but rapidly zooming in and out at random, making the whole thing an offence to the eyes. The audio was somehow worse; There wasn't a single gunshot or explosion in the whole movie that sounded even remotely right.

I loved when they brought a Cobra gunship in to cover their evacuation, and it hovered at an altitude of about ten whole metres above sea level, for some reason. A lot of things happen in G.I. Jane "for some reason".

I remember hearing years ago that Demi Moore was given the Razzie for Worst Actress for this role. What a fucking joke. Her performance is not only quite good, it's the only thing justifying this entire movie's existence. On top of that, she looks damn fine in tank top and buzz cut. I'm giving this an extra star just for her.

I'm uncertain what this movie wanted to be, but I'm certain it's bad.

yeah sure! again— this isn’t finished and never will be finished, I posted the reasons below. But here are a bunch of snippets from the fem!mav/lesbian charliemav AU from this summer. Would love to hear your thoughts, because politically it gave me some pause! lol.

1. On how mav survives (the central motif of the one-shot is Mav cutting her hair with scissors which is why the emphasis here)

2. On ice (straight icemav will never work because fundamentally ice is a misogynistic cunt)

3. on sex with girly girls (one of life’s greatest pleasures)

I also stopped writing this one because I could not for the life of me figure out how to write goose, canonically a sexist just like mav and ice. made things difficult and a little awkward
