THE BIG MYSTERY of the season: Neptune mayor Woody Goodman drives his car off the Pacific Coast Highway and into the ocean below. The Neptune Sheriff’s Department deems his death an accident, but Woody’s daughter, Gia, insists there has to be more to the story and begs Veronica to help her get to the bottom of it.

my NEW AND IMPROVED SEASON 2 MYSTERY REVEAL: you guys know the drill: peter and marcos were going to come forward about woody’s abuse, so cassidy took action. and in this case, that means that he murdered the fucking mayor. during the mystery reveal we get the flashback of peter & marcos trying to convince cassidy to come forward but we will also see a flashback from immediately after woody’s death where cassidy tells peter & marcos that they can’t come forward because veronica is investigating the case as a murder and coming forward would prove a clear motive and implicate all three of them. marcos asks why that even matters if they know none of them did it. there is a tense and cryptic silence between the three of them and it becomes clear to marcos and peter what has happened. we cut back to the present where veronica is letting cassidy know she’s figured it out and there is another tense silence before she says something very specific about woody’s death being an accident (à la to kill a mockingbird's “bob ewell fell on his own knife”) and she and cassidy make meaningful eye contact before we flash forward and see a montage of our main cast enjoying their last summer before college! perhaps there is a pool party at the casablancases’ house and a veronica voiceover about each of her friends, ending with cassidy, who is dating mac and is happy!! this is the series finale because i actually can’t recover season 3 on as heroically as i have done season 2.

The next morning, Synthia woke up feeling more cramped than usual. For a moment, it sent his guards up wondering what new symptom he could have possibly ended up with, but with a deep breath, he realized he felt fine and something else was causing his sudden feeling of being squashed. Right between him and Gia, Natalie was tucked away safely, her wild curls splayed across his pillow.

“Nat,” he whispered, stroking her arm and smiling as she fluttered her eyes open.

Worry crossed her features. “What’s wrong? Do you feel okay? Do you need me to wake daddy or-“

“No, baby, I’m okay. Are you?”

She blushed. “Oh, um yeah, I just-had a bad dream last night and noni told me it was ok. I can go back to my room if you need me to.”

He shook his head. “Of course I don’t need you to,” he squeezed her arm lightly, “I thought the last time I’d wake up to you in my bed was a long time ago.”

Kendall was the next to wake up, stretching slightly and making a sound of surprise when he saw Natalie in between Gia and Synthia.

“Nat?”

“Hi daddy,” she said, peeking her head above Synthia.

Before he could formulate a reply, Gia was waking up, ruffling Natalie’s hair. “When do you want to tell them, baby?”

She opened her mouth to speak, but was interrupted by the rumbling of Synthia’s stomach. He chuckled awkwardly. “What do you need to tell us?”

“Let’s get some breakfast first? I’ll cook.”

With that, she hopped out of bed and padded toward the kitchen, nerves clutching her like a boa constrictor. Gia, Kendall, and Synthia all exchanged a look and followed her to the kitchen, Gia shrugging when Kendall asked what was the matter.

The air in the kitchen was tense as Natalie fixed everyone a plate of pancakes. No one spoke of anything but how they slept until everyone was sat at the table with a plate in front of them.

“So.. what were you going to tell us?”

“Eat first, dad,” she snapped, a guilty look crossing over her face as soon as she said it. She sighed, looking down at her hands. “I’m sorry, I just don’t know how to tell you.”

Kendall looked frightened. “Are you pregnant? You can tell us if you are, we won’t be mad. I mean- I did teach you safe sex but sometimes things happen and we just want you-“

“Oh my god, daddy! I’m not pregnant,” she took a shaky breath, glancing at Gia who nodded encouragingly at her, “I got into Columbia University.”

She spoke quickly and it took a second for the words to settle. Kendall’s look of fear contorted into one of pure pride and Synthia, Synthia had an unreadable look on his face.

“Natalie, that is so wonderful. When did you even apply? My god, our little girl is growing up,” Kendall cooed, getting up and squeezing her to his chest.

“Dada, what are you thinking?” Natalie asked nervously as Kendall pulled away.

Synthia looked up, tears in his eyes. “You were so nervous to tell us. Natalie, I am so proud of you, unbelievably proud but I know why you were nervous. You have to go.”

Natalie stood up and knelt at Synthia’s feet, resting her cheek on his knee like she used to do when she was a kid. He ran his fingers soothingly through her hair. “I’m scared, dada, what if you- it’s so far.”

“And if anything happens, we will make sure you’re on the first plane home. That’s ‘if’,” his voice cracked, “I know my health is unstable and it’s been that way your whole life and I hate-“

“Dad, please-“

“Nat, let me finish. I hate that I could be holding you back. As your father, I’m telling you that you are going,” he said firmly, eyes locked on hers, “I will miss you terribly but I’m not letting you pass up the opportunity of an Ivy League education.”

Tears in her eyes, Natalie nodded. “Okay. I’ll go,” she breathed out, letting it settle, “I’m going to Columbia in the fall.”

“Come here, baby girl,” Synthia cooed, holding her as tightly as his frail arms could handle, “I am so proud of the young woman you’re becoming.”

Soon enough, Gia and Kendall joined in on the hug, all of them whispering praises to their daughter, their sweet and wonderful daughter who always thought of others before herself. Synthia couldn’t help but think it was about time she put herself first.

Female Characters of Veronica Mars and sexual assault or exploitation

I decided to write out a succinct list of every instance where female characters on Veronica Mars were sexually abused or exploited in some way. The number is very high.

Veronica Mars - Was inadvertently drugged with GHB, then raped by cassidy. Was drugged again in season 3 and almost assaulted. Filmed without her knowledge. Had that “sex tape” shown at her high school reunion.

Lilly Kane - Seduced and exploited by an older man as an underage teen. Ended up murdered by him.

Sarah Williams - Was raped by her stepfather and became pregnant.

Susan Knight - Was statutory raped by her teacher, became pregnant and gave the baby up, ended up dying of an overdose.

Carmen Ruiz - Was drugged with GHB by her boyfriend who then filmed her. Used the footage to blackmail her into continuing their relationship, eventually released the footage publically. 

Madison Sinclair - Was dosed with GHB without her knowledge and ended up inadvertently drugging Veronica when she spat in her drink. 

Mary Mooney - Was exploited by her teacher as a student at Neptune high in the 1980′s, gave birth at prom, the baby was adopted by the Echolls.

Stacy (The Rapes Of Graff) - Was drugged with GHB and raped. Veronica proves Troy’s innocence after he is accused.

Dawn - Veronica uncovered that she was raped prior to Stacy. Was one of the Hearst Rapists first victims.

Parker Lee - Got drugged with GHB, had her head shaved and was raped.

Gia Goodman - Was coerced and blackmailed into a sexual relationship with Stu Cobbler, ends up shot and killed by him.

Nicole Malloy - Was raped when leaving work.

Even a lot of the characters that were not abused still got punished in some sense for their sexuality. Meg is the perfect example. Her punishment for sleeping with Duncan was to be dumped, pregnant, blown up in the bus crash, in a coma for months, woken from the coma so she can apologize to Veronica and then fridged, so Duncan can run away with baby Lilly. 

This is without mentioning the Mac/Cassidy thing, the male characters who were abused or the false rape feminists plotline of season 3. 

I love this show but the use of sexual assault in it is beyond the pale and frankly kind of obscene.

Things Veronica Mars Season Three Could Have Given Us If The Writers Weren’t Cowards

1. An actual exploration into the aftermath of all the shit that went down with Cassidy.  - Dick Casablancas’ trauma & guilty conscience. He’s a piece of garbage but had so much fucking potential and I’m never gonna get over how the writers fucked up his entire life and then spend ten minutes max exploring him in the aftermath. - Mac’s trauma & intimacy issues. I’m never gonna forgive them for deleting those scenes in 3.04 with Wallace realizing Mac is uncomfortable around guys she doesn’t know and even him when he puts his arm around her. Release that footage cowards. Ily Mac you deserved so much more. - Not writing Gia out and actually exploring her trauma. God she could have been so interesting... I’ve written some stuff about it but I feel like she would actually feel bad for Cassidy, like... while Dick feels guilty that he didn’t notice Cassidy was being abused, Gia would probably feel guilty that she didn’t notice her dad was abusing all these boys... and she had a little brother, so god knows what her dad did to him. - Logan’s guilt regarding Cassidy’s suicide is something that wasn’t even touched on?? Like he was there when it happened and literally couldn’t answer when Cassidy asked him why he shouldn’t jump...you can’t tell me that didn’t fuck up this already fucked-up kid.

2. Not forcing Piz and Veronica together - this one is self-explanatory but. Logan and Veronica were so endgame. I get Piz’s puppy-dog crush on V, but to actually have them end up together??? Logan did not save Veronica’s life time and time again for this kind of treatment.

3. Not killing off Kendall - No one else probably cares about this one but I am a Kendall stan. she’s got that Julie Cooper energy and I would give my life for Julie Cooper. Let Kendall skip town with her eight million dollars and live it UP. - (Or stay in town, get a divorce and actually be kind of a good stepmom to Dick? This is just because I wrote that one fic but Mom Kendall is now near and dear to my heart. not to plug my own shit but fic link here)

4. Appreciating Parker Lee - I fuckign love her - sunshine girl... i miss her so much

5. Parker and Mac as girlfriends - I forgot I shipped this until two seconds ago but omg it’s valid - I just think they’re neat

6. Not just entirely writing out Duncan Kane - Unpopular opinion I actually really like Duncan?? He’s doing his best. - I would like to order one (1) interaction between him and Logan regarding the hit on Aaron Echolls.  - They were best friends in S1 and I deserve more!!

7. More Logan & Heather!!! - Ok 3.13 has all my rights but Logan promised Heather they would play Mariokart together once a week and I would like to see that please!!

8. Everyone just hanging out and having fun?? - They’re college kids! let them hang out and be happy! - Especially during that last stretch when Veronica wasn’t actually solving any major mysteries?? - Just like... Wallace and Logan and Dick and Mac and Parker hanging out... their overall dynamic is something we deserved. - Just playing video games in Logan’s suite... idk just hanging out!!! having fun!!! - This is entirely based on this fic it’s maybe my favorite VM fic... ever? go read it omg.

9. I don’t remember very much about S3 Weevil and I think that means more Weevil scenes/plotlines are required - Finally let Logan and Weevil resolve their shit - I just think canon bisexual Weevil would be neat

10. Dick actually fucking apologizing for leaving Veronica passed out in a room with Cassidy & telling Cassidy to rape her - I would feel much less guilty about enjoying the character so much if he apologized for the worst fucking thing he ever did - i know they changed his character around because Ryan Hansen was so likeable but if they could’ve actually addressed his Biggest Fucking Flaw in the process, that would’ve been dope

Anyway I’ve revoked all of season three’s rights. Wish I wasn’t two years old when it aired so they could hire me to write a better, gayer version. Thanks for nothing Rob Thomas

Fun fact, Natalie in this au is based off of Natalie Goodman from the musical next to normal, the key difference is that her dada is physically sick and not mentally sick like Natalie Goodman’s mom <3😌 and this prompt sebsequently reminds me of the song in the first act when Natalie’s mom finds her awake at 4 am and tells her she needs to slow down and take time for herself and that she’s gonna go have sex with Natalie’s father <3 .. anyway I’ll stop rambling about musicals now <3

23. “You’re still awake. Something on your mind?”

Since Synthia’s diagnosis years ago at this point, everyone struggled with sleep in some way. Synthia himself could barely stay away at times, Kendall woke up 5 times a night to check on him, and Gia became the world’s lightest sleeper. So, really, it wasn’t at all surprising when they woke to the sound of quiet tiptoes down the hallway. Checking beside them, he found Synthia still fast asleep, breathing evenly into Kendall’s chest, who was also snoring blissfully. That left only one member of the household to be the culprit.

They pulled themselves out of bed, and followed the sound, the sound of footsteps turned into rooting around in kitchen drawers.

“Natalie?” They called, making the teenager jump, eyes wide as she turned around.

“Hi, Noni.”

“You’re still awake,” they said matter of factly, checking the time on the oven, just past 3 am, “something on your mind?”

Natalie sighed, removing her hands from behind her back, a thick yellow envelope in her hands.

“Nat, what is that? What are you doing?”

She sighed, her eyes brimming over with tears as she handed them the envelope.

They looked it over, ‘Columbia University’ etched into the envelope in fancy letters, addressed to none other than their daughter.

Eyes wide, they gasped. “Nat, did you-? When did you even apply?”

“I applied a while ago. I-I don’t know if I got in yet, I was trying to find the letter opener,” she flushed, “I didn’t want to ruin the envelope.”

“Here,” they said, opening a different drawer and pulling out the tool, “wait- should we wait until morning? Your dada and daddy will be so proud of you.”

“No. Even if I get in, I don’t know if I want to go,” she said, looking down at her feet.

“Natalie, what are you talking about? This is an Ivy League school!”

She looked back up, eyes misty. “It’s so far away, what if-.”

She couldn’t say it, but Gia knew exactly what she was thinking. “Come here, baby,” they said, leading her to the couch where they sat beside one another, Natalie resting her head on their shoulder.

“I know what you’re thinking. Dad would want you to go.”

“Of course he would! He never wants any of us to feel like him being sick is hindering us, but I would never ever think that, but I would be all the way in New York, what if something happened and I-I couldn’t be there. I could still get just as good of an education at University of British Columbia, which I already know I got into.”

Gia ruffled her hair. “You’re too independent for your own good. You’re smart, you’d make the best out of any school you ended up in, but Nat, you really can’t compete with Columbia.”

She sniffled. “I know. I applied because I wasn’t sure if I’d get in, but when I got feedback on my essay I sent in, I-I think this is an admissions letter.”

“What did you write about?”

“I wrote about dad.”

Gia hummed. “I bet it was something special.”

She nodded. “Yeah. I don’t think they give feedback on a lot of essays but I got an email saying it was particularly’moving’ and to look out for the yellow envelope,” she said, turning the envelope in her hands.

Gia felt a surge of pride for their daughter, so smart and dedicated, they loved her and their little family more than anything. “Why don’t we open it together and based on what it says, we can talk to dad and daddy in the morning?”

“Okay,” she said, thrusting the envelope into their hands.

They gingerly took it and edged the letter opener into the paper, opening it painstakingly slowly and taking out the letter inside.

“Together?”

She agreed. “Together.”

“1..”

“2..”

“3…”

On the count of three, their eyes flew open, scanning the first sentence.

“Oh my god, Natalie, you got into Columbia.”

“I got in,” she repeated, her stomach churning.

They flung their arms around her, squeezing tightly, mumbling about how proud they were of her.

“What do I do, Noni?”

Pulling away, they held her at arm’s lengths away, studying her beautiful face. “You have to do what’s best for you.”

“Yeah,” she whispered, tucking her head under their chin and yawning. “Can I come to bed with you and we can talk in the morning?”

She hadn’t slept in their bed since she was a little kid, but the scared look on her face made her look so young that Gia couldn’t say no, even if they’d be crammed with 4 people in the bed.

“Of course, baby girl. I love you,” they said, kissing the crown of her head, “I’m so proud of you and I know dada and daddy will be too.”
