Camillo Carmine x Reader
Tumblr media
General Headcanons (SFW + NSFW)
Tumblr media
warnings: nsfw, mentions of blood, mentions of biting, cursing
words: 1.4k+
a/n: this was a highly requested work, so enjoy and have fun with the little bonus at the end! This is not really an x reader, but it could be read as such, so oh well. Let me know your thoughts on Camillo's character, and/or if you'd like to see more of him in the near future <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SFW
✧˚ · . Camillo is basically like a big cat
✧˚ · . Tall motherfucker, standing at approximately 8,2
✧˚ · . The guy is very calm, silent, and sneaky all at once. If anything, he would make an excellent spy and has been offered positions before in that line of work
✧˚ · . Very independent; wont work for anybody but himself and is beyond stubborn
✧˚ · . He is a hardass, but underneath his tough, strong front, is an individual who is a giant kid at heart, who is so deeply loyal and giving that it hurts, and who takes all relationships he makes very seriously, as in he would gladly put his life on the line for someone he cares about; questioning his loyalty is the worst you can do
✧˚ · . Favorite colors consist of greys and purples of any shade; it always struck him as having more of an elegant, dancer sort of vibe, and the display of the colors usually help him to relax in times of distress. His whole bedroom is centered around that color palette and it hasn't been changed since he and Camilla have inherited the mansion
✧˚ · . On the subject of Camilla, he likes to annoy her. His real personality can start to be seen the more time he spends around his sister; they behave just like any normal pair of siblings would. The two have had a love hate relationship growing up and it still is that way, even if just a bit more watered down now. The two like to joke and hang around together every now and again when they aren't off busy with their own lives
✧˚ · . What a Carmine lacks in affection, they make up for in loyalty
✧˚ · . If you wanna talk about dancers, he is one. He loves dancing in his spare time and even uses the Carmine manor as a spot to host dancing lessons amongst sinners willing/wanting to learn
✧˚ · . His silvery pointed dancing shoes are like his literal children, and he always goes into a slight panic whenever he can't find them. They provide him with that sense of security, as dancing is a huge part of his life and he could never stand to be without it; they were also a gift from his mother
✧˚ · . Never likes to ask anyone for anything, especially not help. He likes to cover up his needs with smart-ass comments and handsome smirks that most can't stay mad at for too long
✧˚ · . Has been told he has a very punchable face
✧˚ · . His fangs make for a great, sarcastic smile; his face either consists of a frown or that signature smirk. He uses his fangs for a lot of things, including biting people when they get on his nerves
✧˚ · . Can totally play the piano; claims its a very calming and dignified instrument. He doesn't play it often but when he does, its a gift to anyone around to hear
✧˚ · . On the asexuality spectrum, identifying as demisexual and biromantic. It takes him a little longer than the average sinner to develop feelings for someone, let alone sexual feelings
✧˚ · . As stated before, his relationships are one of the most important things in his life and he handles them with great seriousness
✧˚ · . The epitome of that one secretive, mysterious, tall and mysterious stranger everyone wants to be friends with, but are too afraid to approach directly to ask
NSFW
✧˚ · . It's very difficult to get anything verbal out of this man when he's in the process of being intimate with someone, even if they're his s/o
✧˚ · . The most you can expect is some pleasured grunts, maybe some low groans if you're lucky
✧˚ · . It's not that he isn't enjoying whatever is being brought upon him, he is just one to closely guard his feelings and never really express them too vividly; yes that ends up following him into his sex life
✧˚ · . 9 times out of 10 he prefers to give pleasure rather than receive it
✧˚ · . Loves to degrade and use pet names with his partner; sweetheart, doll, slut, and whore tending to be some of his personal favorites to use
✧˚ · . Big on consent. If you are ever not comfortable with anything he proposes or is in the middle of doing to you, then he will stop instantly and get you anything you need. He may seem like an asshat sometimes, but he is a decent person (if that comes as such a shock)
✧˚ · . Into some form of pet play/leashes, no negotiation
✧˚ · . He always likes to be in control and rarely ever is the submissive one during intimacy.
✧˚ · . Will speak Spanish in bed, usually doing so in order to fluster his partner; it often gets him a positive response
✧˚ · . Being blindfolded is a big kink of his. As a dancer, he is used to having to be accustomed to other senses, so when they are heightened after his sight is temporarily taken from him, he will have a ball of a time
✧˚ · . One of his top favorite things is watching his partner ride him. Just the sight of his cock being sheathed inside your body over and over again as he watches you get off on his lap all on your own
✧˚ · . Dirty dancing is something he is much too fond of. The act of getting all worked up from dancing with one another, teasing each other all the while, then getting to fuck his partner into the ground, whispering praises to them about how well they danced with/for him; he is all too eager to teach you more of what he knows about the dancing world
✧˚ · . The little shit is one of the biggest teases you will ever meet. He honestly has a sex drive that's more so on the lower side and does not need sex as often as most sinners seem to
✧˚ · . But, be prepared when he does have the energy to pleasure you, for he is astounding at it.
✧˚ · . Kissing, biting, steamy makeout sessions, eating you out, fucking you raw; he can do it all and excel in the process
✧˚ · . His fangs usually come into play a lot during sex; a huge fan of biting and leaving marks on his partner to let others know that they have already been claimed
✧˚ · . Camillo is one of those demons you'd be lucky to have sex with. It's not even an egotistical thing, he's just not very sex-coded when it comes to relationships or really anything in general. He believes in a true connection with someone first before engaging in any sorts of those activities, hence his sexuality
✧˚ · . Sex with Camillo is always very serious and passionate. He never allows himself to be as vulnerable as he would be right now, so better to cherish it whilst it lasts
✧˚ · . It's almost like he picks one mate for life, then he's done looking, like some species do
✧˚ · . Thinking of it, when he really gets into action and the rare times he wants to have sex, he fucks like a wild animal. He does have his vanilla, gentle side where he will care for you nothing short of a husband, but if he has the chance or some pent up anger to release, you better prepare to go for multiple rounds of very rough sex
✧˚ · . To top things off, he does have a praise kink. It may be hard to pick up on at first, but if you praise him, let him know how good he's making you feel, he's a mess (at least internally). Nothing really gets him going more than knowing he is fulfilling his job as a partner; making you feel good in every aspect that he can. It gives him purpose and that's really all he needs when he's with his s/o
Tumblr media
BONUS~
✧˚ · . One of Camillo's wildest fantasies is to have his lover cockwarming him whilst he plays a song for them on his piano. He can imagine struggling to not fumble over the keys, not let his fingers slip, as he feels you clench around him, biting his lip or your shoulder hard enough to draw blood in order to stifle any noises that may find their way past his lips. That vulnerability is something he knowingly holds sacred; you could potentially be the one to coax it out of him.

Fanfic idea: While checking out the university of San Fransokyo for Camillo and Mirabel (Ft. Chaperone Agustin and 'why don't you just give it a try again' Luisa who had not gone out of Encanto to college) the Madrigals nearly get crushed in a Giant Robot attack. Luisa saves them and seriously impresses local heroine, who just needs to meet her.

Some HCs I have of some other World Grand Prix racers :
. Raoul Carroulle ( the French race car ) loves singing, dancing, getting drunk often and is a huge LGBTQ suppirter
. Miguel Camino ( the Spanish race car ) is kinda like Camillo from Encanto but except even more sneaky. He loves flamenco dancing and basically sometimes loves a good gossip
. Also Raoul Carroulle and Miguel became boyfriends somewhere near the end of Cars 2 ( like, around when Miles Axelroid got arrested )
. My voice hc for Carla Veloso ( the Brazilian race car ) is Carmen Miranda. Anyway Carla is Fiesty, spirited, loves to party often, and is a Lightning x Sally shipper and a Carroulle x Camino shipper.
. Francesco's parents are both F1 racers. Mama Bernoulli retired sometime after her husband died, and became a racing trainer for Francesco
. Nigel Gearsley is the youngest of those World Grand Prix racers. My voice hc for Nigel is Tom Holland. Basically he is often chatty, loves Star Wars, and LOVES internet memes. And he is also a fan of Queen. Lightning and several other racers came to treat him like a little bro figure
. Shu Todoroki's wife, Kiyomi Yamaguchi, is a light pink Toyota car and famous geisha who performs mainly at a fancy Tokyo geisha dining theatre. By the time Cars 2 rolled around they already have a 3 year old daughter ( who is white and pink like her dad ) named Sakura. Srsly Shu x Kiyomi are kinda like a cars version of Moto x Moe from Kimono Mom in some ways.
. . Kiyomi Yamaguchi is sweet, elegant and ladylike, but definitely not to be trifled with. After her husband got injured in that Porta Corsa race, she flat out mobilized her and Shu's friends back in Japan to have a whole 10 thousand yen law suit on Axelroid over her husband's injuries. And she shows up there to defend her husband in that Miles trial
. Max Schnell ( the German car ) is from Berlin is more of a stoic type, yet he has a gentle soul ( he is more of a gentle giant type if you ask me ). Likes beer, poems, skiing and dancing. Also loves to hit the gymn often
. Lewis Hamilton ( another British car ) is often more collected, loves to DJ and is often seen meditating with some lo fi music on his headphones. He becomes a good friend to Nigel Gearsley
. Jeff Gorvette basically is a Miami surfer dude and is somewhat younger than Lightning. The two met before during the US national races and became good associates over time.
. Rip ( the Scandinavian car from New Rearandia, a ficitonal Nordic island country near Iceland ) is basically kinda like a mix of Kristoff and Hercules in some ways. That guy is basically a big hearted himbo who loves to sing and dance....and has a competitive Streak as well

For that DVD commentary thing:
A scene from 'September'
That afternoon, a German sergeant knocked on the door of the rectory. When the door opened he saw a giant of a man in a black cassock with a half-cigar in his mouth and a dark look on his face. Nobody would have blamed him for taking a step back in alarm. Which he did.
Then he took a piece of paper from his pocket and read out slowly, “What do you know of a Giuseppe Bottazzi?”
The effort of translation was commendable, even if the verb didn’t match the pronoun and the pronunciation was painful on an Italian’s ears. Don Camillo shook the ashes off his cigar and spoke slowly, detaching his syllables.
“I know I lost a bottle of cognac to him last week. Why?”
The German blinked and looked down at his paper again.
“We have received word that you may know the whereabouts of a Giuseppe Bottazzi or may be conspiring to hide said Giuseppe Bottazzi to the German military administration.”
Don Camillo laughed in his face.
“Me, hiding that godless Bolshevik? What does this look like to you,” he added, pointing to the church with a large gesture that almost knocked the German sergeant down, “the Kremlin? Do you have any idea what the Soviets did to priests in Russia?”
If the German sergeant had understood everything, he might have remembered old Pater Stefan, from his native town of Illesdorf, whom the Gestapo had come for one day and whom nobody had ever seen again. But since he only caught one word out of three, he stared up at Don Camillo and held up his paper again in a hand that was trembling slightly.
Don Camillo took pity on him and took the paper from his hands.
“May I? It’ll be quicker.”
He rummaged in his pockets and found a pencil stub with which he wrote on the back of the paper, If you ever find that individual, please make sure to hang him publicly as I promised him I would be there to watch him get strung up from a lamppost. He would do me the same courtesy and told me so many times. Signed, Don Camillo, parish priest of Brescello.
The German sergeant looked at the paper, then at Don Camillo’s face, then fled as quickly as his dignity allowed.
Don Camillo watched him go and went up directly to the rectory attic where he had been hiding Peppone since his disappearance.
“I think I bought some time, but they’ll probably be back tomorrow. I have to get you out of here.”
Peppone, unshaven and pale with dark smudges under his eyes, looked a fright. Worry for his wife and children had been eating away at him so much that he had scarcely slept or eaten for four days.
“What about them?” he asked anxiously.
Don Camillo didn’t have to ask who ‘they’ were. “They’re shaken and worried sick, but the Germans don’t seem to do anything other than keep an eye on them. Might be that the Germans think you’re gone for good; or maybe they don’t consider you important enough to be worth reprisals.”
Any other time, this would have drawn an explosive reaction out of Peppone. This time, though, he just kept staring into space with such a haunted look in his eyes that Don Camillo felt sorry for him. He drew up a dusty crate and sat down in front of his old enemy.
“They’ll be fine, Peppone,” he said gently. “They’re at your mother’s. You know she’s always glad to have her daughter-in-law and grandchildren around.”
“Father, if anything happens to them, I—”
“I know. Nothing will happen to them as long as I draw breath.”
“You swear?”
“I swear.”
Don Camillo had never made a promise he couldn’t keep and Peppone knew this. He drew a shaky breath. The next one came easier.
Ooh, thank you!! It just so happens that I reread these stories fairly recently (and stopped at the end of the chapter in progress half thinking "man, I wish the author would finish this one day", it's cool" ^^') Okay, I'll do my best. Here we go. September, or the start of a serious change of context in the dynamics between frenemies Don Camillo and Peppone (for a while).
That afternoon, a German sergeant knocked on the door of the rectory. When the door opened he saw a giant of a man in a black cassock with a half-cigar in his mouth and a dark look on his face. Nobody would have blamed him for taking a step back in alarm. Which he did.
That's because he has self-preservation instincts. But seriously, I love reminding readers that Don Camillo (and Peppone) are Big Men. Not just strong, but tall and large.
Then he took a piece of paper from his pocket and read out slowly, “What do you know of a Giuseppe Bottazzi?”
This is the first and only time Peppone's full name is mentioned in the whole series :D The last name "Bottazzi" is only used a few times, always in relation to either his wife or their kids, but that's it. Peppone is "Peppone", period (like Don Camillo doesn't have a surname - he's "Don Camillo", period).
The effort of translation was commendable, even if the verb didn’t match the pronoun and the pronunciation was painful on an Italian’s ears. Reminder that they're not speaking English, but are both speakers of different languages that unlike modern English have different pronouns to address someone depending on their relationship to you. But that doesn't mean the German soldier knows the finer points of Italian conjugation. Don Camillo shook the ashes off his cigar and spoke slowly, detaching his syllables.
“I know I lost a bottle of cognac to him last week. Why?”
Because both Don Camillo and Peppone are excellent scopa players, but Don Camillo lost that particular game and consequently paid for a bottle of cognac, like shown earlier in the fic. I don't remember which short story features this little habit but I pulled it straight from the books and I really love it.
The German blinked and looked down at his paper again.
“We have received word that you may know the whereabouts of a Giuseppe Bottazzi or may be conspiring to hide said Giuseppe Bottazzi to the German military administration.”
*sigh* There's always informers, usually anonymous. And look - the Germans know zilch about the people who live in the village and the delicate balance there, so they'll say "Sure, the priest is hiding someone, that checks out. We've seen it happen." Most people in the village would laugh at the very idea, because Don Camillo hiding Peppone?? No way in hell, right? And I like to think that a handful of insightful folks would think Yep, they may fight each other tooth and nail but they wouldn't leave each other to the bloody Nazis. And they'd be right.
Don Camillo laughed in his face.
“Me, hiding that godless Bolshevik? What always makes me laugh whenever Don Camillo calls Peppone variations of this is that Peppone is anything but godless. He has his very own relationship to God and Jesus and belief, which is usually presented as wrong and to be gently corrected, but he's not faithless. What does this look like to you,” he added, pointing to the church with a large gesture that almost knocked the German sergeant down, Reading the books and watching the films always reminds me how much I love that these characters have a very thin hold on their tempers and that it often translates in a very physical way. Their faces, their hands, their whole bodies are very expressive and it feels important to not leave that out. “the Kremlin? Do you have any idea what the Soviets did to priests in Russia?”
I mean, he's got a point.
If the German sergeant had understood everything, he might have remembered old Pater Stefan, from his native town of Illesdorf, Which is 100% fictional. I made it up for a Hogan's Heroes WIP to fit my imaginary geography around Stalag 13 (which kiiiinda matches the geography around the real Stalag XIII-C POW camp near Hammelburg). whom the Gestapo had come for one day and whom nobody had ever seen again. But since he only caught one word out of three, he stared up at Don Camillo and held up his paper again in a hand that was trembling slightly.
~He scared~ (with reason :P)
Don Camillo took pity on him and took the paper from his hands.
“May I? It’ll be quicker.”
He rummaged in his pockets and found a pencil stub Again, also from the books. Don Camillo always keeps small stuff like that in his pockets. And like his usual half-cigar, it's not even a full pencil. He's used to making do with not much. with which he wrote on the back of the paper, If you ever find that individual, please make sure to hang him publicly as I promised him I would be there to watch him get strung up from a lamppost. It is. SO. difficult to maintain the balance between those two and to ascertain just how serious they are when they threaten to kill each other or have each other hanged. I don't know how serious they are! I like to think they never would in a million years, but that's the thing, I don't know for sure! Does that mean they don't love each other and aren't the other's closest fr—enemy? Absolutely not! It's complicated! He would do me the same courtesy and told me so many times. Signed, Don Camillo, parish priest of Brescello. The name of the village is mentioned maybe once in ~168 short stories and it's not important. I did use "Brescello" as a sort of placeholder (it's where they shot the films and there's a History there). I only used it three times in the whole series - otherwise it's "the village".
The German sergeant looked at the paper, then at Don Camillo’s face, then fled as quickly as his dignity allowed.
Don Camillo watched him go and went up directly to the rectory attic where he had been hiding Peppone since his disappearance.
When I write something based on a book, I more or less consciously try to stick to the author's style, and Giovannino Guareschi's is deceptively matter of fact and straightforward (but also has sarcasm, heart and humour and even poetry behind it). It's not flowery and he doesn't beat around the bush. Those three paragraphs sort of pay homage to that, hopefully: in rapid succession, we see Don Camillo laugh at the very idea of helping Peppone and then the narration abruptly reveals that he was actually doing precisely that. It's like pulling out of "3rd person limited PoV" and just... seeing what happens on camera. Which I love doing, incidentally. Sometimes scenes have more punch if the reader just sees what happens rather than having the narrator spell out a character's emotions.
Peppone has his faults (they all do, including and especially Don Camillo) but he loves his family to bits and is absolutely not afraid to show it.
He can't help the digs :D Neither can, actually. This little game is such an integral part of their relationship that the rare times when the other doesn't react as he should, it's recognised as a Really Bad Sign. Case in point:
Any other time, this would have drawn an explosive reaction out of Peppone. This time, though, he just kept staring into space with such a haunted look in his eyes that Don Camillo felt sorry for him. He drew up a dusty crate and sat down in front of his old enemy. I make a point of never, ever, in the whole series, having either character refer to the other as a "friend". They're "enemies". But since they've been enemies for 35+ years (since they were little kids), and have Been Through It and Seen Things together, they would do anything for each other despite their fundamental philosophical and political differences.
“They’ll be fine, Peppone,” he said gently. “They’re at your mother’s. You know she’s always glad to have her daughter-in-law and grandchildren around.”
Look, there's few things I love more than writing a character who by the nature of their job/calling/place in the narration is supposed to be soft and/or patient but absolutely isn't - instead they're short-tempered and brusque and grumpy and sarcastic - BUT who is also generous and kind and quite capable of being gentle (even if they don't quite know how, sometimes). It's like a bright colour on a bland backdrop - the impact is all the more meaningful.
That bit about only making promises you can keep is super important to me. It always irks me in like medical shows where the doctor promises a patient's loved one that they'll save them - how can they make that promise?? Seriously, don't have your characters make promises that are just impossible to keep - at least not without consequences.
Thanks a LOT 💜

Everyone is imagining G/T in Encanto being tiny rat Bruno but size shifting Camillo Madriga is canonl!!
He turns into a smaller version of his father and shifted into a 7 foot version of Bruno (who is 5 feet tall). The kid can alter his height!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Imagine him shifting to an inch or a 15 feet tall! Maybe it's tied to his shape shifting, but I'd like to imagine he would eventually learn to size shift separately. He would be cute being held in a hand or using his giant height to pull pranks and help people.

So I’ve read a lot of Encanto headcannons and theories, but the ones about Dolores associating Bruno with falling sand doesn’t fit for me.
I’ve read countless times that her association is because Bruno throws salt and sugar all the time, and while that may be part of it, I don’t think that’s why.
I feel like everyone skipped over the entire scene where Mirabel sneaks into Bruno’s room and there’s a literal waterfall of falling sand.
Casita didn’t make that when Bruno left. That had been part of his room for a long time, along with the chasm and the thousands of stairs and bla bla bla. Maybe it was put in when Dolores got her gift? Who knows, but the wall of sand wouldn’t have made sense unless someone from far away could hear him all the way up in the chamber thing.
So I take it that the sand waterfall is what she means.
——
But can we talk about WHY Bruno has the falling sand?
Dolores is 21 (I think?). She’s the second born out of all 6 madrigal children, older than Luisa (19) and younger than Isabella (22). Which means she was 6 when Mirabel was born, and 11 when Mirabel didn’t get her gift and Bruno fled into the walls.
Which gives us 5 ish years of Dolores having enhanced hearing, and 5 years of her listening for people, hearing her Tío enter his room, only for him to disappear through the sand and for her to loose track of him.
I think the sand was put there when Dolores (who apparently can’t keep a secret) listened to Bruno mumbling about a vision he had and either told the person or asked Bruno about it, and he asked casita if there was any way to change his room to stop Dolores accidentally eavesdropping.
That’d explain the sand, the giant iron door to the vision room, the falling sand IN the vision room, and practically everything else. In my opinion at least.
Cause imagine that. Bruno gets the vision after Mirabels ceremony flops, and Dolores, 11 years old and protective of Mirabel, stood outside Bruno’s door straining to hear over the mountains of falling sand, through the iron door, so she can figure out what’s happening because grown ups are mean and won’t tell an 11 year old the truth.
And then it all stops. Bruno’s gone. And at first, she thinks he’s hiding in his room behind the sand because she can’t hear him. But one night she just hears the faintest creak in the floorboards and hears his heart beating like a jackhammer, before his voice, that would be imperceptible to any normally hearing person, says quietly
“You won’t tell anyone, will you?”
And that started the secret. All headcannons about her making tea in the middle of the night to his ‘door’ (the painting) and listening to him commentate his little rat shows I believe-
WAIT I KNOW THIS IS LONG ALREADY BUT OMG I JUST HAD A THOUGHT
In the scene where Mirabel talks to Camillo posing as Dolores, we see that he’s getting extra portions, but why would Dolores be allowed extra portions? Felíx even says “stop pretending to be your sister to get extra portions” as if his plate wasn’t already full.
What if Dolores got extra portions so she could sneak some to Bruno? Yea, Bruno says he has access to the kitchens but who’s to say there was always food made?
Idk man but like, I’m going crazy on this. Do what you will.

You know, the line "Seven foot frame, rats along his back" really confused me, until I remembered that Camillo was really young when Bruno left, and when you're little, all adults look like giants to you, so Bruno probably looked hella tall from baby Camillo's point of view.

Finally watched Encanto, some thoughts:
That scene where Mirabel is like "I will never be good enough for you," yeah that fucking hurt
Speaking of, does she still have to stay in the nursery after this? Why doesn't she get a giant ass room full of cool shit? Justice for Mirabel
I now headcanon that the house likes Mirabel the best bc she talks to it the most
I expected Camillo to have way more importance than he actually had considering the obsession over him. But I guess I should stop being surprised by that stuff.
Same with Bruno tbh.
It was a fun movie tho, I loved the songs and the message was very nice.
I still don't really get why Bruno had to leave tho. Like, the way people acted I thought he was deliberately shunned for something, but no he left on his own accord bc of a prophecy that he could have just hidden? Like I dunno maybe I'm not thinking about it clearly enough but idk how leaving protected Mirabel when all he had to do was smash the prophecy and keep mum.

Bluecifer is a giant cast-fiberglass statue of of a mustang found at the Denver International Airport. Bluecifer is a 32 foot tall 9,000 pound statue of a mustang horse that is blue in color with glowing red lights as eyes. Blucifer (real title of the statue is the “Blue Mustang”) was created by Luis Jiménez who was commissioned by the airport to create the statue. Bluecifer gets his nickname due to the fact that in 2006 Luis Jiménez was painting the head of Bluecifer when it fell severing an artery in his leg killing him. This lead many people to believe that Bluecifer was evil. The statue was completed by Luis’ family and  professional race-car painters by the names of Camillo Nuñez and Richard LaVato and was unveiled at Denver International Airport in 2008. Bluecifer added to the conspiracy that something odd is happening at the Denver International Airport due to the airport having odd paintings and gargoyles that many believe to depict the New World Order.

y'all ever think about how the reason camillo says bruno has a "7 foot frame" is probably because he was 5 the last time bruno was around and so bruno probably seemed giant to him especially when he was telling scary futures???? maybe camillo one time snuck into bruno's room and watched him do his future telling thing...

WORDS OF SHAKESPEARE: The Return of a very Supa Occasion! (Special guest: Richard)
On the 19th of June 2021, my old friend, Maiwel alumni and acting veteran Richard and I went to the Supanova Comic and Gaming Convention at Sydney Olympic Park in Homebush Bay. The 2021 edition of Supanova was the first time in two years that it was held in Sydney as last year’s edition was called off due to “You Know What” alongside Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth.
To implement with the health and safety protocols, the layout of the convention was more smaller and laid out to comply with physical distancing measures as well as entering via a QR Code.
When I first entered the Dome Exhibition centre seeing all of the convention goers and Cosplayers of superheroes, sci-fi and anime. I kneeled down and proclaimed “HALLELUJAH!” as many of the convention fans from NSW were starved of a taste of a full-on convention since the world went upside down early last year (Outside of the smaller edition of Oz Comic Con titled OCC POP UP which was held earlier in March of this year).
Supanova contained a teeming amount of Cosplayers from DC Comics and Marvel Superheroes, Rick and Morty, Steven Universe, Star Wars, Ghostbusters, Doctor Who and Power Rangers, Cosplayers from anime such as My Hero Academia, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Naruto and Disney films including Mary Poppins, Mulan and The Little Mermaid, Cosplayers from Video games including Overwatch, Pokémon, Super Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog, Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Mortal Kombat, Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy, Sonic the Hedgehog and Undertale, Cosplayers from Web animations for instance including RWBY, Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss as well as various furry Cosplayers and cosplays of my childhood such as Pingu. There was also a very innovative cosplay such as an attendee dressed up as a giant functional Nintendo Game Boy System! The costumes looked absolutely well designed and spot on as I asked kindly for photos!
A number of RWBY fans and Cosplayers noticed me wearing Jaune’s Pumpkin Pete Hoodie. I must admit, I’d make a pretty good Jaune cosplayer if I could get his armour, his “Crocea Mors” sword and shield and dye my hair blonde!
There was also the Cosplay stage across from The Dome where there was a competition for the very best and innovative costume, as well as seminars of the bigger name Australian celebrities.
Speaking of the celebrities, Due to the international borders being closed until either the middle of next year or when the majority of the population of Australia is vaccinated, Supanova relied heavily on home grown talent from our country for example (but not limited to) Manu Bennett, David Wenham, Josh Lawson, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Georgia Haigh, Nicholas Hamilton and frequent Supanova Attendee, John Jarratt who is famous for portraying the infamously ominous and frightening Mick Taylor from the horror movie franchise “Wolf Creek.” I still remember being scared straight to high heaven watching the movie when I was very young due to Jarratt’s portrayal of the heinous horror character next to Bill Skarsgard’s portrayal of Pennywise the clown in Stephen King’s IT Chapters one and two, but alas Jarratt was a very generous and friendly larrikin!
There was a lot of great activities to do including the “Black Widow Obstacle Course” where you had to complete a number of tasks within the time limit in order to win a prize, Star Wars Lightsaber demonstrations and tutorials and the “Battlecry” LARP (live action role playing) battle displays and demonstrations where you could fight your friend or one of the friendly Battlecry veterans such as Sammy Owen from the recent Medibank Commercial with a rubber sword or axe. This was a very great debut for my LARPING alter ego, “Boar-Head: The Sworded Brawler” and I am very interested in joining a Battlecry LARP group in the future!
There was a very colourful display of artwork, comics and prints at the Artists Alley, with various comic book artists from across Australia such as (but not limited to) Queenie Chan of Fabled Kingdom, Anthony Christou of Luminous Ages and Camillo Di Pietrantonio famous for illustrating the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IDW comics.
The Fabulous Wonder Mama also made a guest appearance as she is a superhero representing the LGBT Community.
The Artists Alley also had tables of independent artists selling comics, prints, bookmarks and badges available. Looking at the artwork made me feel like I was at an Art Museum for the fans of pop culture!
For those who want to spend some dough, there were also stalls selling new and vintage comics and trading cards, Pop Vinyl Figures, Animation cells from cartoons and movies of yesteryear, Action figures and gaming consoles from the eighties and nineties, LGBT pride flags, rock and metal band t shirts and apparel and Plushies from Japanese anime and video game franchises such as Pokémon and Digimon. There were also games to play such as Super Smash Bros Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch so fellow gamers can smash their friends out of the arena! For the con-loving geeks who were hungry, Dominos had a stall selling various flavours of pizzas and garlic bread and the canteens in the Sydney Olympic Park Dome sold fish and chips, bagels, sushi and coffee. Byron Beef Jerky also had a traditional stall selling all kinds of flavours such as Teriyaki, Chilli and the infamous “Devil’s Doo-Doo!” (Not for the faint hearted!)
Whilst Supanova Comic and Gaming Con in Sydney was a fun event for the inner nerds, parts of the con had to be completely modified and or removed in order to be healthy and safe for example, the discontinuation of handing out free goodie bags containing the guidebook and map of the layout of the con and other cool things making both the map and guide digital exclusive via the Supanova Website.
Another notable absence was the Australian Wrestling Federation wrestling ring where the pro wrestlers of the aforementioned promotion would host a series of three wrestling matches per day and the wrestlers would hand out free autographs, this really kind of hurt me as a fan of pro wrestling for sixteen years but it’s better to be safe than sick. At least the Battlecry LARP displays and demos filled in its place!
For the seminars, gone are the days of staff handing the microphone to the audience for the Q&A’s as they have to lineup behind the microphone in order to ask an interesting question to the guests.
I also didn’t like how some parts of the convention was a bit squashy when you first entered, in the artist’s alley and in some of the stalls. Like I said, we are in a receding health crisis and we need to wear masks, be physically distant, wash our hands and get the much needed vaccine shot against the you know what!
All in all, Supanova had a amazing return to full flight in Sydney despite the scare earlier in the week and the lack of International guests. I was starved of a full on convention throughout the year of misery last year and as a person on the autism spectrum, cons are such an amazing way to make new friends and to show out your inner geek, nerd, fanboy or whatever via cosplaying, gaming, greeting guests, purchasing artwork and so on and so forth all in a very safe measure!
I give this year’s Supanova in Sydney a 7 out of 10. This edition was absolutely different compared to last year’s and I have strong confidence that next year’s edition in Sydney and abroad will have well known and beloved international guests back to the much loved Comic and Gaming convention next year, just in time for Supanova’s 20th birthday!
Next time I am in Sydney, I will be going to the Vivid Festival which will be in August so stay tuned for that!
Happy trails!

This is Gonta Gokuhara from the visual novel “Danganronpa V3″. Given the informations easily found in the internet the kanji of his name and surname can be read as “healthy swarm of bugs” and “Prison meadow”. So....”A healthy swarm of bugs captured in a meadow”? Sound right? Any error or fallacies? Apparently Gonta is a real name.
Let’s move toward something less name-centric.
Tumblr media
This is Naruto Uzumaki. The name is apparently a long pun around the figure of spiral and whirlpool across semiotic, geography, natural events and despicable fishcake for ramen. Whirpool spiral? Naruto can be a proper given name?
All this to say I felt the desire to translate etymologically names from the italian popular culture.
Ugo Fantozzi: Good-heart child Leonardo Zuliani: Julius' fierce lion Salvo Montalbano: God's salvation on a nice mountain Mercurio Loi: Merchant's salvation Francesco Ingravallo: French carve Enzo Ceccotti: Giant frenchman Giandomenico Fracchia: Sacred torch gifted by the Lord Zeno Cosini: Zeus' stuff Cosimo Piovasco: Cosmic rain Gesualdo Motta: Jesus' salvation in a clot of earth Camillo Tarocci: Disputed God's messanger Marco Buratti: Mars' sieve Paolo Laurano: Little laurel Emilio Largo: Great rival Guido Anselmi: Large holy helm Marco Pagot: Mars' page

(merci ♥ Avec un peu (beaucoup) de chance je finirai celui-ci pas trop loin de Noël de l’année prochaine…)
___________
(December 1944)
People knocking at a priest’sdoor or window at odd times was not a rare occurrence. Sometimespeople just didn’t have time to wait for the morning and neededextreme unction right away. Don Camillo took off his glasses and putdown his brush, wondering with a familiar sinking feeling in the pitof his stomach who was in need of a priest so badly at nearly one inthe morning.
But nobody knocked.
Instead the rustling became ascraping sound.
Don Camillo turned off the oillamp and tip-toed to the door. After some more scraping there werewhispers on the other side.
“You stay here as lookout; ifyou see or hear anyone out there, stick your head through the doorand whistle. You look for the cash. I’ll take care of thepriest.”
“Are you sure it’s worth it?”murmured a second voice. “The whole place looks shabby. Wouldn’tit be better to hit one of the villas outside the town?”
“The Krauts requisitioned allthe rich houses and they defend them. Besides, I’ll bet youanything that reactionary pig’s money box is worth the effort.”
In other circumstances, DonCamillo would have laughed. The entirety of his savings scrapedtogether barely amounted to twelve thousand lire1– hardly the stuff a potential burglar would dream of. He did notlaugh, however, and instead crept silently to the side of the door, his back against the window. Fury burned so hot in his chest that itmade it hard to breathe.
All the shutters were closed andthe fire was out; electric light was down again. Without the light ofthe oil lamp the room was plunged into utter darkness. Don Camilloturned the little crucifix near the door so that it faced the wall. Then he felt around with his right hand, and when he found what hewas looking for, he grabbed it in a steel grip.
The door opened slightly and letin two men, who closed it behind them. One had a submachine gun; theother held a pistol in one hand and an electric torch in the other. The first had a small moustache and the second a beard. Neitherlooked familiar to Don Camillo.
“All right,” said the manwith the submachine gun, who had spoken first earlier and wasobviously the ringleader, “you can start –”
“Or you can end it right now,”said an icy voice behind them.
The second man whirled around andyelped as the light of his torch came to rest on a giant of a mandressed all in black, glaring at them with the fires of the LastJudgement in his eyes. He held a thick wooden stick and wielded itwith the ease of familiarity, but more than the stick and the sheersize of its owner, it was the eyes that made the two men take a hastystep back. Which proved they still had a measure of discernment.
They had expected a meek littlepriest who could be counted on to take the sight of a submachine gunseriously. They found Don Camillo instead.
The first blow sent the man withthe submachine gun across the room. The second caught the other man’spistol before he could fire it, and the third sent him to join hiscolleague on the floor. Don Camillo retrieved both guns and put themaway; then he picked up the stick again and gave the two men athrashing such as they had never got before – or, if they werelucky, would ever get again.
__________
1 Almost £7 and less than $20 circa 1950 (the earliest conversion rate I found).
(There’s a reason Don Camillo is so furious, by the way. But spoilers…)
( send me a 👀 and i’ll post a snippet of art/writing that i never got around to finishing this year!)
