P L E A S E. like are you kidding. are you kidding???? you know, his pink hair is tied at #3 in the list of my favorite hairstyles/colors on him, but it is very close to that #2 spot which is also very close to the #1 spot. they are all very tightknit up there at the top. but when the pink hair was curly??? gooood. i think what it was with the pink hair is that it just complimented his skin tone so beautifully, like he has a fairly warm skin tone but he does at times have cooler toned moments and i think the pink being pastel made it very nice to pair with his skin and whatever he wore. plus i don't know if you agree or if you notice, but pink hair reeeaaaally makes his eyes sparkle. if you don't know what i'm talking about i don't mind providing examples (the first one being your set kldjlaj like bottom left)

how to make gifs? some basic tips cause I want to start doing it too as well👀

the tutorial i used when i first learned to make gifs... i don’t remember where i found it and it explained specifically how to use kmplayer to make screencaps from videos and import them into ps, which i don’t enjoy and no longer use. i did find this tutorial tho and i think it explains how to make a gif in photoshop alone, in the most streamlined way possible, so here you go. 

i’m also going to link this tutorial on how to use avisynth. if you want to use a really high quality file called a .ts file, those cannot be directly imported into photoshop, but you can use this program and cut a clip from whatever ts video you like and it will preserve the quality while also making it available to import through photoshop. when you see performance gifs on here, this is the program that most people are going to use in order to make those (or vapoursynth if you’re a mac user. i’m not and i have no idea how to go about using that.) i use 4sashi to dl .ts files, all you have to do is make an account. i also use this site to download .mp4 files from vlive, and i have 4k video downloader for youtube. there was a site i was using to dl naver vids, but it’s been flaky recently.

this is an ask i answered on my old blog awhile back about sharpenings as well. and another tutorial on how to use topaz if you’re interested in that (i tend to use topaz denoise.) the purpose of it is to reduce the amount of noise in your gifs, making them look clearer and nicer. just don’t overdo it! when i save my gif, i also like to put it on diffusion as opposed to pattern or noise... i especially hate pattern because it leaves like... a noticeable grid over your gifs. some people have argued w/ me about that tho so i’ll leave it to your own discretion what settings you want to use when you save your gifs for the web, it’s just a suggestion. 

as for coloring, i just suggest you find your own style and what you like to do. for me, after i convert my gifs to a smart object, i like to sharpen and do a color balance and selective color layer, then i’ll flatten the frames, make layers and go about the process of converting them to timeline / making a smart object again, add topaz and do a hue/saturation layer.. maybe selective color again if i’m not happy enough with it... depending on the video i might turn the brightness or contrast up... i think i tend to actually under-utilize curves and brightness bc i’ll be starting at the dark mode of photoshop for 3 hours and not realize how dark my gifs actually are. i suggest taking a small break maybe after you’re done coloring just to make sure that you like how it turned out ! i think the most important thing about coloring at all when you’re giffing actual people tho is to pay attention to the way you’re making their skin look because it’s very important not to wash them out. 

sorry for the wall of text ! it’s been awhile since i’ve answered a gifmaking question and i like to experiment so much with different features of ps at this point that like... i don’t really know where to begin. if anyone (or you) are interested, i could try making a video (there’s actually a trend now of people making videos to explain their process, all you have to do is go in the gif tutorial tag and you can see a bunch of them !) but yeah ! i hope that some or... any of this helped ! it might seem intimidating at first, but it’s actually a simple process and it becomes muscle memory after awhile. and if you have any follow up questions, i can try to go more in-depth about some things !

Hi!!! omg thank you so much for sending this to me ♡ it was such a pleasure to look through my old edits. I cheated and chose a bunch of my faves at the moment lol 

the one of my favorite isak valtersen clips. Just looking at it makes me emotional cause he has such a special place in my heart and I just love each of these scenes so much. I think the edit came together in a very nice way, I wouldn't add/ remove/ change a single thing. I also love that it has this sort of pastel tone to it.

I feel like I have to mention these two edits of the bold type. I'm so proud of the coloring here, I'm always trying to do these sets that really highlight the colors and this was the one time I was actually happy with the result. But then there's also this one that just makes me incredibly happy bc of the scenes I selected: all of them are so cheerful and comforting and I love it.

this nairobi edit makes me incredibly proud. I love the colors in it, I love that I was finally able to do a quality 540px set and I also love the gradient text. Also I feel like these moments capture her character so well, showing her as strong, confident and bold, but also as vulnerable, soft and cheerful. 

this brooke davis edit is one of the first I ever made and I still love it a lot. I love the moments and the quote I selected and how they are a perfect match. The way it all comes together gives me a weird sense of peace and inspiration. 

also this naley edit makes me smile so hard. I love this song so much and I think it perfectly fits them. I'm proud of my selection and coloring and this set actually makes me wanna gif more.

i'm so proud of this gran hotel edit. It was made from terrible quality videos but you'd never know by looking at the gifs (or at least that's what I think lol). I also love this kind of green tone. 

this darvey edit gives me all the feels. I kind of hate the coloring and the quality of some gifs but I really love the general idea of the edit and I'm thinking of making another similar set tbh.

Okay so yay for a tribe swap but uhm it's kinda homophobic that not only am I not on a tribe with Dani or Ryan, but that I can't even speak to them now!! Wtf! Why did we switch tribes right as I felt so good????? Now I’m in a tribe where I feel like I can’t connect to anyone except dan and sometimes Tom. I made an alliance with Tom, Madison, and Dan. Heya, time for a little update! As of now, I am getting a little frustrated with my tribe (love Jake though). But before I get carried away, let's see how well we do in the immunity challenge. I am not sold on the song choice, but I appreciate that a few people give active input. I'll do my part as best as I can and hope that it'll be enough for at least 2nd place... Should we lose, I'll try to get a solid group with Jake and Junior, and add a player, who one of the other three wanna vote for. I know I haven’t been around much. But I hate this swap. I hate this tribe. I know NO ONE who I feel will be willing to keep me safe with them. So I actually have to work hard to talk to people. So me being a straight shooter, I immediately target Billy, who has slacked the most on this new tribe and would be a fair call (on paper). But it's only natural that people have their own agenda and I am being targeted by Joey and Billy at least. me trying to make a gif part 2 (thrilling finale, buildup ver.)

ok good news and bad news: good news being withheld for Spoilers (not that it’s that hard to guess anyway lol), bad news explained first bc, chronologically, it is first

so yesterday i mentioned in the tags of that post that i had seen that krita has an animation feature so i was gonna try importing the frames into that and then exporting it as a gif. easier said than done, as it turns out

i started by opening the file i made yesterday with 62 layers as the frames and importing that into krita, which worked fine (i didn’t know you could actually open .psd files in clip stuido ((this typo is so fucking stupid it made me laugh so im leaving it)) and krita, so that’s pretty neat, i wonder if it works the other way around too) but i ran into problems when i tried to convert those layers into frames in an animation. because, like, the layout of the program has the layers displayed in one tab, and the animation timeline in another, like so:

so my goal was to get the frames from the layers into the timeline, and i still don’t know if i did it right bc lbr krita is not very intuitive at all,,.,, i mean i watched a video tutorial abt how to animate in krita which was v helpful (it’s the one by jesse j james on yt fuckin SHout out) but it was about animating from scratch, not importing an animation you’ve already done elsewhere

so like, the way krita’s animation thing works, from what i could piece together as i bumbled my way around w/ it, is that each layer in the layers tab is a separate timeline in the,,, timeline tab

i want them all to be in the same timeline, not separate ones, and there’s no way to combine them in the timeline tab bc doing that just overwrites whatever layer you’re pasting it down onto, and also if you define the number of frames for that timeline (62 for this project) it just puts the single image of that layer for all of the frames instead of just one of them, so you’d have to go through and delete all the other frames you don’t want it to be, which would be such a fuckin pain

so i found a workaround, which is so tedious that it can’t be the right way to do it, but basically i started w/ layer 1 and defined 62 frames & then emptied frames 2-62, like this

(that blue box is the frame, btw, even tho it says 0, which actually kind of annoys me like why doesn’t it start the first frame on 1????)

from there i went up to layer two and selected that in the timeline, but for some reason the frame doesn’t show up automatically?

& i couldnt fuckin figure out how to make it into like, an Official Timeline Layer or whatever tf bc like, u see on layer 1 how theres that little lightbulb-looking icon on the right? that’s for turning on onion skin which only applies when you actually have frames with things drawn on them, so basically layer 2 in the layers tab has a drawing but in the timeline it doesn’t?

i didn’t find out what the actual reason for this is or how you’re /supposed/ to make the frame appear in the timeline, but what i did was right click on layer 2′s timeline & select “create blank frame” which magically made the frame i want appear

but it’s on top of the layer 1 frame, and i want it to be the frame after. also it’s still in a different timeline. this is the only easy fix in this whole damn process, u can literally just click & drag the frame from layer 2 to layer 1 and put it wherever u want on the timeline

and then u just delete layer 2 and that’s it, frame transferred!! then i just had to do that for 60 more layers and after [unspecified amount of time but it was a fuckin while ok] my timeline looked like this!

(the gaps near the end are held frames, to save me time so i didn’t have to copy a bunch of frames that were exactly the same)

krita is great because as far as i know ur animation can have an unlimited number of frames, at the risk of your own pc’s processing power, which is a definite upside to SOME expensive art programs i know (clip studio, i’m talking abt csp) and u can pick the frame rate too (cough photoshop elements 5.0 even tho u dont technically have an animation feature & it’s a miracle u can even make gifs at all) so once i finally got all the frames situated all nice and in order like on the same timeline, playing it was great! played at the right speed, looped perfectly, it was a dream come true right

well, time to export it as a gif

so u got 2 options for exporting ur animation, u can either hit “export,” which lets u save it as different file types, one of which being gif, or you can hit “render,” which gives you gif and video options

i tried export first, bc that seemed like a good idea, but the “””gif””” it made was distinctly not a gif, despite its claim to be one?? this is what i got:

notice: 1. it is not moving, and 2. the black bars to the sides?? those are supposed to be transparent. they’re transparent in the file i made so why didn’t they register as transparent in the export, when gifs have transparency capabilities??

so That was some real live bullshit but i still had the “render” option, right? export was wrong, so rrender must be the correct option to go to that will produce the results i am wanting to see produced in front of me like a silver dinner platter with a correctly functioning gif under the lid, that’s what i want to see and “Render Animation...” is gonna Give me that silver platter righWRONG ok look at this shit rn ok Look

((rationally ok yea thats v useful for if ur making the animation in krita and want to export the frames to use elsewhere, but like uhhh 1. again, they’re not transparent & 2. i should have the option of saying i don’t want these??? bc *meme voice* i don’t want these)

so in the end i could find NO correct method of exporting animations as a gif in krita bc every ooption that says gif is fuckign LYING to ur face there are NO gifs in krita, aliens made the progam who looked at gifs and went “hmm i thikng this is how a gif works “ and just made jpegs instead but somehow got on the computers good side and got it to lie for them about it being a gif so thats why it says gif on the file still even tho its not a gif illimati confinr

so what is the conclusion to this? well i said there was good news too, and this is the portion where i divulge that sweet nectar (i type dthis 2 seconds ago and @ me what the fuck)

so after wasting a good 2 hours trying to figure out krita i gave up and watched some good old [youtuber name redacted bc what if it shows up in search & ppl see this dumbass post in there but it rhymes with fjackfsepticfeye] to relax into accepting my fate that i’ll never be able to upload my animations to tungle except in poor quality loopless video form, making me into a laughing stock on my own art blog, but THEN i had a stroke of genius, in my Brain

so if u read yesterday’s post u might remember that flipnote studio, the animation program i use on my ds, to animate, has the option to export files as gifs, both animated and sequential (meaning either as one fully animated gif or each individual frame separately), which is super convenient, but as i mentioned yesterday, any time i tried to open the folder with those files on my laptop, it crashed immediately

WELL today i thought “hey, how about instead of opening the folder in the sd card when it’s plugged in, how about i copy that folder from the sd card to my flash drive, and try to open it there, in case it’s the card’s hardware that’s causing the problem, not corrupted files”

so i tried that and it FUCKING WORKED THANK GOD GLORY HALLELUJAH

so now instead of spedning A THOUSAND YEARS trying and failing to force art programs to bend to my will i can just export the animations straight from my ds and drag them onto my computer Just As God Intended oh GOD im so fucking happy

here’s the gif in the end, i’m gonna post it to my art blog too but this is the Green Version bc i animate in green bc of some default settings in flipnote that i got used to, plus it makes me feel like i’m just sketching so nothing really has to be finalized so i’m comfortable while i work, and also it’s just nice ok it’s a Nice Green

(there’s a few frames at the end that are like the extra scraps from while i was working dw i got rid of those in the final version that i’m posting to my art blog later. also i added my blog url to that one too it’s aaaaaall good)

the only downside to this method is that i can’t change the canvas size to be 540px wide to fit with tumbrl s image dimensions but whatever i can just post them in a text post and fix the html to display it at its original size instead of the resizing bullshit tmurbl pulls constantly ugh. anyway it works great on desktop but it’s inevitably gonna look like shit on mobile no matter what i do *Big Ass Shrug*

anyway thats the end of my success story uhh i can’t make the like comment & subscribe joke again bc i already did that in the last post so like bye i guess thanks 4 watchign & have a great day i’ll see u in my next fvideo

here’s an updated tutorial on how i make my gifs!

featuring: oikawa tooru from haikyuu!!

what i will be using:

- photoshop CC 2017 - handbrake (x) - a media player (i use vlc and that’s what i will be referring to)

note: i’m on windows 10 so if you have a mac, the interface may look different.

1. i would like to thank sue for introducing me to handbreak bc it makes my life a whole lot easier :)

2.  this may contain grammatical errors as i made this tutorial  at 12am (if you added me on snapchat you’d know). i have no idea why 12am out of all times…

okay, now on to the tutorial :)

STEP 1: ISOLATING THE SCENE

using: vlc media player and handbrake

so here i have my video in vlc media player (haikyuu!! - s2 ep 6)

i’m just going to the exact scene that i want, making note of the timestamp near the play button.

after i’ve found my scene, i open up handbrake and choose “file” as my source selection. you want to pick the same video file you used for vlc media player.

now that i have my file selected and it’s the right one, i can insert the time of the start of the scene and the time at the end of the scene here:

tip: record a few seconds before and after the scene you want to isolate. this ensures the you have the full scene intact and you aren’t missing any frames.

tip: make sure the scene is under 5 minutes or else it will take a while to download. i think that 30 seconds is enough to completely capture a scene.

when you are saving a file in handbrake, you need to create a destination path. mine is just located in my kmplayer capture folder (bc that’s where all my old psds are), but you can determine where you want to put yours on your own. make sure to give the file a name as you are saving. 

you can also do that in the destination bar.

now we are at the output settings. here are my settings that i use:

you want to save all your files as an mp4 file because that will definitely work on photoshop as i will be using convert video frames to layers (photoshop is not compatible with mkv files, a format that is abundant among anime)

you want the quality to be lossless because that produces the highest quality video.

i know there is a subtitle tab, but i’ve never had any issues with my videos (with subtitles) having subs after it’s been encoded, so i wouldn’t bother messing with it.

even if your video is already in an mp4 format, you want to use this to get the scene you want. if you go into photoshop with a 24 minute long episode, you will find it harder to get the exact scenes you want with photoshop’s crappy sliders.

i know there is another way of getting clips via vlc media player’s record function, but i tried to do it and couldn’t get it to work. for me, handbrake is the easiest way to isolate scenes.

okay! we can finally download our video file!

up at the top, there is a bar highlighted in blue.

start encode: begins to convert/process your new video file. if there is nothing in the queue, press this button.

add to queue: when you’re currently encoding something, “start encode” will transform into a “stop encode” so you use “add to queue”  when there are more scenes you want to encode. once the preceding file is done being encoded, the next one will start.

show queue: displays everything that needs to be encoded or is currently being encoded

when your file is done, go to where you saved the video and it will be there!

STEP 2: MAKING THE GIF

using: photoshop

go to file > import > video frames to layers.

then load the video file you created in handbrake.

as i said before, you want to have bit of the scene before and after the actual scene you want to gif.

if photoshop brings you this pop-up:

do not click continue. press cancel and use the 2 trim controls to condense the range. remember to include frames from before and after the scene you want to gif. you can also limit it to every 2 frames as this will get rid of duplicates and reduce the frame count.

btw: this is from kimi no na wa. the haikyuu video wasn’t long enough lol.

after clicking okay, photoshop will look something like this:

basically, you will have a frame animation with the timing already set for you.

now i will just delete excess frames, layers, and crop my gif to be 540px.

i know it’s not important to delete layers you aren’t using, but it makes file saving so much faster, which is why i highly suggest you delete anything you wont be using.

here is what i have now:

please please PLEASE make sure to save your files!!! especially if it’s something you know you’ll be working on later. this just allows for reediting and if you accidentally mess something up, you can always go back into the psd and fix it.

so that’s basically it for making the gif! now i’m just going to

color my gif

add my watermark

convert my frames to a timeline animation

select all my layers and convert them to a smart object (select them, then right-click for convert to smart object)

apply my sharpening and blur filters

save for web

i always group my adjustment layers so that my layers panel looks neater.

now it’s time to save the file as a gif by going to file > save for web.

sometimes i use diffusion, other times i use pattern; it really depends on what the gif looks like. if there’s a noticeable gradient in the gif (x), then i will use pattern over diffusion as the banding will not be as noticeable and everything will look smooth. 

if you want a comparison between the 2, in this tutorial, the very first gif is saved with diffusion while the very last gif is saved with pattern. there’s truly not much of a difference (the pattern gif may be a little darker) except this:

the file size is wayyy lower. this won’t always be the case in using pattern over diffusion so don’t automatically choose pattern over diffusion.

always go preview your gif in save for web to see what it would look like after it’s saved if you’re unsure about the timing of the gif. just go to save for web and click on the preview option. that will give you a good idea of how your gif will run when it’s finished. i recommend doing this after you’ve converted the frame animation to a timeline animation.

and now you’re done :)

i would highly recommend you make actions out of processes you do often (like cropping) and give them a keyboard shortcut.

keep your gifs under 3mb

always crop to tumblr’s current width dimensions (x). height is not a big deal, but if you find that your gif is over 3mb, cropping the height will lessen the file size.

if you have a very long scene, or one with lots of movement, consider limiting the frame capturing to every 2 frames. this just gets rid of duplicates and lessens the amount of frames you have, thereby reducing the gif’s file size (i’m sure i said it up there somewhere).

keep in mind that blurring reduces a file size and sharpening increases a file size. you may want to change your settings if you are just over the size limit.
