DAY FOUR: Later Generations
Dawn and Dusk. Morningstar and Evenstar. Tindomiel and Undomiel.
This is the piece that has been delaying the rest of my @finweanladiesweek submissions bc 1: I realised I hadn’t finished painting it and 2: I hate doing backgrounds

Now when first Vingilot was set to sail in the seas of heaven, it rose unlooked for, glittering and bright... And when this new star was seen at evening, Maedhros spoke to Maglor his brother, and he said: 'Surely that is a Silmaril that shines now in the West?'
And Maglor answered: 'If it be truly the Silmaril which we saw cast into the sea that rises again by the power of the Valar, then let us be glad; for its glory is seen now by many, and is yet secure from all evil.'
And think of the twins, gazing at the star in wonder with Maedhros and Maglor, having had no idea that was their daddy as they journeyed with their two new dads.

...and the people of Middle-earth beheld [the new star] from afar and wondered, and they took it for a sign, and called it Gil-Estel, the Star of High Hope. ~ The Silmarillion, Chapter 24 (Star of High Hope by Irsanna, deviantART)

@gil-estel replied to your post “am I overreacting? I have no clue! I think I am a lot more sensitive...”
an observation: in western media fandoms there's a ton of non-western fans but relatively few au fanworks that recenter those fandoms in those fans' cultures. (With the exception being media that has a very large western fanbase; like, you'll see some anime/manga tropes crop up in western fandoms.) Whereas it seems like w fans of Chinese media in particular aren't willing to put in that same work
This is such an interesting fascinating point and honestly probably part of what gets to me so much when I see En-fandom fans centering Western-gaze on CQL/MDZS, etc.
And I think this is where... I really wish people would pause to think about their privilege as Westerners/English-speaking fandom and its positioning in terms of intercultural power dynamics, and like, colonialism/imperialism lmao. Because the whole... Western cultural imperialism thing IS huge. And even in Asia, I think, there’s a lot of ideas of “Western is better,” and how Western standards are seen as better. And the idea that Western is the default? and everything else that a headcanon might consider or a fic author might research is a favor done to fans, instead of expected? Or where I do chime in with a cultural note where I think I disagree with someone’s interpretation, and sometimes get shut down for it, and the person would reassert their headcanon but again, to me it just smacks of cultural unawareness?
I mean... I don’t know. this is something I have a hard time with because I know I don’t have a lot of emotional parity, this IS something that does touch upon very personal emotional things with me and my personal experiences.
I get people aren't always being malicious!! but boy howdy does it hurt when I chime in but get refuted in a way that reads to me like they’re prioritizing their Western lens views over my perspectives lol.
@blossomsinthemist replied to your post “am I overreacting? I have no clue! I think I am a lot more sensitive...”
I don't go here on the regular but I'm . . . sure you're not overreacting, honestly.
<3 <3 I am trying to navigate the line between “reacting with anger” and “reacting justifiably.” It’s so hard in fandom BECAUSE we do have conventions of “let people hc how they want, ship how they want, etc.” But my thing is like....... What is the line between me going when you center things from a Western-centric view, you’re exercising your Western privilege, and me being a rude member of fandom where the etiquette is not to tell someone their headcanons are wrong? Still... trying to navigate that space :’) and unfortunately, i think there’s a LOT of times where like, it’s better for me in the long run to NOT say anything :’) and just try to let it go/move on. Even though it rankles and adds to the constellation of, like, personal identity trauma that comes with being a non-white immigrant in the US lol.

For @cap-ironman‘s Mid Year Exchange Madness.
For @gil-estel, based off this lovely piece of Art.

“Bored yet, beloved?” Natasha asks low, her voice far too soft for a normal human to hear, but knowing her husband would be able to pick up on it with his superhuman hearing, and flashes a cool smile as she rearranges her body for as the paparazzi call for them to look this way and that.
Steve lets out a low chuckle and turns to beam down at his wife, eyes shining brightly with adoration for the woman in his arms. Bending low to rumble in her ear as he gives her waist a quick squeeze, “How could I be bored, what with the flashing lights, the screaming questions, and you in my arms, darlin’?”
Natasha turns her head to look up and shoot him a fond roll of her eyes, “You’re such a giant sap,” she murmurs just before accepting the kiss he gives her.
“You knew that when you proposed to me,” he shoots back, a teasing smile playing at his lips. “Besides,” he straightens up and moves to trail behind Tasha as they’re called to move beyond the photographers and over towards the reports. “No place I’d rather be than here with you tonight.”
“Biggest lie you’ve ever told,” Natasha snarks back just before the reporters began yelling, vying for her attention so they can be the first to ask her questions. “You’d rather be out punching Hydra or AIM agents.”
“No, no, well, maybe not no, not tonight,” Steve denies, before Natasha can call on someone, “Tonight I’d rather be in the shop watching you work or curled up in bed binge watching Parks and Rec with you. Alone.”
Grinning, Natasha swallows back a chuckle before turning and pointing aimlessly at the crowd of screaming people, “Lets get the torture portion of the night started then, so we can get back to the tower and choose either the shop or our bed.”

gil-estel mentioned you on a post “oh and hey looks like part-time status isn’t granted for mental health...”
@the-bi-writer In the op-ed I linked to, the author went to student counseling after the death of a parent and was told "that I should save my emotional stamina: He knew people in situations like mine, and he said, in no uncertain terms, that the Dean of Students office would never approve my request."
aaah i’m sorry it took so long to see this! i just re-installed xkit so it’s actually working now, and i can see my notifications at last.
anyway, that’s really awful. i’ve been so discouraged lately to see people’s genuine lack of human compassion in like, so many situations. i mean, technically, if that person had a mental health diagnosis, like depression, they are legally entitled to reasonable accomodations under the ADA, but just because you’re legally entitled to rights, doesn’t mean you’ll get them lol. and, ya know, if the dean just had a heart it wouldn’t even be an issue. *sighs and hides head in hands forever*
i dealt with this in school too, actually. i got dx’d with celiac when i was 19, when i was living in the dorms, back before anyone even knew what gluten *was*, so i was sick all of the time. there weren’t really labeling laws back then, so i was just kinda screwed (this was like 2005.) i had a bunch of other health issues too, and was basically dragging myself to class by my fingertips to make it through, bc i had the same issue - my scholarship was based on being full time.
i’m really, really grateful that i had teachers who worked with me, and i managed to make it through because of them, but yeah ADA rights aside, it’s complete bullshit that an Actual Human Being would look at a grieving student and say, “suck it up and go to class.” like, i can’t even imagine being that level of calloused.
this world is awful sometimes.

I got a fountain pen (it's kinda garbage but eh) and decided to finally make a reference page for tengwar (working on numbers rn) so that I can start learning it beyond what I need for my oc's names and yooo it looks so much better with it than with pencil!
Like even with my mediocre grasp of how fountain pens work it looks pretty good!
"The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog" no tengwa for X so I squished K and S together. Also, Silme Nuquerna supremacy (I can't believe I have opinions on that now).
