Style Flashback: Sophia Loren 🖤
PART TWO
Sophia Loren is well-known as a muse in the fashion world, both to fans and designers alike. Giorgio Armani created a whole collection inspired by the international star, as did designer Sofia Sizzi. And it's easy to see why. Loren has timeless taste and embodies the classic Italian woman. She loves her fur coats and her designer labels, and always has diamonds sparkling from her ears or throat.
Take a walk down memory lane and scroll down to see some of Loren's best looks through the decades. *Courtesy of itsrosy.com
Tumblr media
Bold Hats
For Loren, heading to the airport meant she got to don fabulous hats. This pink lace floral number is no exception.
Most of Loren's hats come from designer Jean Barthet, who was Paris' most thriving milliner. His business was booming in the '60s when other milliners were closing down shop. His order book had A-list names like Brigitte Bardot, Queen Farah of Iran, Elizabeth Taylor, and Princess Grace. And each time that Loren visited the milliner, she bought in bulk.
Tumblr media
Roman Chic
Even when Loren played an ancient Roman, her outfits were modern-day chic. Here the actress is in her role of Lucilla, the daughter of Emperor Marcus Aurelius in The Fall of the Roman Empire, a 1964 movie. While she might have been dressed for an ancient empire, her ruched dress and jeweled baubles looked stylish enough to wear during the modern day.
Tumblr media
Bold Fall Looks
Loren really knew how to work her outerwear. In 1965, she arrived at London Airport for the premiere of Lady L, and her bundled-up outfit proved to be the epitome of fall style. Her checkered coat was topped with a bold bow, which she accented with a crocheted hat and color-tinted sunglasses.
Tumblr media
Fierce Cat Eyes
In 1967, Loren displayed some fierce cat eyeliner while at a Hollywood event. She dressed in glittering accents from head to toe. Her dress was a sequined designer confection, which she matched with a diamond and sapphire necklace. The show-stopping Bulgari necklace is one of her favorites: she also wore the same one to the 1966 Cannes Film Festival a year prior.
Tumblr media
Grand Ball Outfits
Forget red carpets — Loren truly shined at balls. She especially turned heads while attending a grand ball hosted in a casino in Monte Carlo in 1969. It was her first public outing since the birth of her son, and she decided to go all out by sporting an elaborate headdress.
The outing was a "Dîner De Têtes" costume ball, where she and her husband rubbed elbows with Grace Kelly. The princess actually had some trouble getting to the party with her own big headdress.
Tumblr media
Groovy Seventies Attire
Loren perfectly captured the changing fashions of the seventies with this Mod outfit. It consisted of a floral print mini dress with matching go-go boots. Loren wore this scooter dress ensemble on the set of La Femme du Pretre (The Priest's Wife.)
Tumblr media
Street Style
Loren looked every inch of the stylish New Yorker while heading to a movie set circa 1978. Her black silk and lace dress was both daring and elegant, and played up her bombshell status.
Tumblr media
Late '70s Style
Loren always looked like she walked straight off of a runway in her airport outfits. Here she arrived in Heathrow from Paris wearing a chunky fur coat, turtleneck sweater dress, and knee-high leather boots. She looked like she hopped out of a Vogue editorial, but in reality she was just waiting to get through customs.
Loren's style has always been so impeccable that in 1999 she received the CFDA Fashion Award for "a lifetime of glamour." The actress made it her mission to embody timeless Italian style and luxury. "During her long film career, Loren made bosom-baring an art, with all manner of sensual dresses and tops. Later, she became the elegant patron of top designers such as Valentino and Gianni Versace," the Philadelphia Inquirer observed.
Tumblr media
The Age Of Excess
Loren embraced the Age of Excess in the '80s and piled on the glitz and glamour during her red carpet events. In this outfit, her red dress had elaborate bead and tassel shoulders, which she accented with stacked gold chokers and chandelier earrings.
She wore this outfit to a dinner honoring her as Grand Marshall of 1983's Columbus Day Parade. The annual parade on Fifth Avenue is famous for honoring Italian-Americans, but that year they shined the spotlight on an Italian-Italian. And even a bigger deal: Loren was the first woman to lead the parade in its 39-year history!
Tumblr media
Nighttime Florals
Spring time florals aren't just reserved for day dresses and picnic skirts. Loren wore head to toe floral while in Moscow in 1991. She had a matching wrap and a flirty high-low hemline. The floral frock was vaguely familiar of another white floral dress she wore back in 1955, proving that Loren's style was timeless.
This was about the time that Loren began wearing glasses to red carpet events, much to the surprise of many.
"She suddenly began turning up in magazines and at black-tie functions wearing glasses, rather glamorous glasses to be sure, but glasses nonetheless," wrote Vanity Fair in 1991. "Somehow, it was jarring. Somehow, you didn’t want to see Sophia Loren... (in) spectacles. She was... the last of a dying breed, and now she was pushing frames with little curlicues on the side, manufactured by an outfit called Zyloware?"
“I’m doing it for fun,” she insisted. “It’s something I could design, I could draw myself. That’s why I did it.” They were always gorgeous glasses, so why not?

This unique Butler & Wilson brooch comes from @barbrastreisand’s personal collection. Based in London, Butler & Wilson began selling antique jewelry from a stand at Antiquarius Market in Chelsea in 1969. They opened their first shop in 1972 and started making original designs for their art deco collection around that time. "From the very beginning we never did subtle" says Wilson of his design style. Today they are iconic for their costume jewelry. This hand design is one of their famous pieces and was made in many variations. In the 80’s Butler & Wilson became well known enough to expand their store and launched billboards featuring celebrities including Faye Dunaway & Jerry Hall. Their designs were notably worn and adored by Princess Diana, Madonna & more recently by Adele & Duchess Kate Middleton. In 1984 they were commissioned to design exclusive pieces for the Giorgio Armani Collection. They soon expanded to more locations including Harrods and London’s West End. In 1994 the royal family appointed the company to design jewels for the Tower Of London’s gift shop and additionally, a line inspired by the décor of Buckingham Palace to be displayed inside for public tours.  By the 2000’s they were selling on QVC & had expanded to designing bridal as well as selling vintage handbags and clothing.  They also began collaborating with Victoria’s Secret for their fashion shows. In 2017 their South Molton Street location closed after 32 years due to rent increases, but you can still purchase their designs through QVC and at the flagship store on Fulham Road in London. Barbra’s hand brooch is circa 1980’s. It is 2” x 4.” The hand is set with clear Swarovski crystals in multiple sizes. Siam red & jet black teardrop shaped Swarovski crystals in a claw setting form the fingernails and cuff.  The back is signed and features a post pin with a revolver fastener. This piece was sold at auction in 2004 for $1,050.00 USD. #streisandstylefiles #butler&wilson #barbrastreisand #costumejewelry #handbrooch #streisand https://www.instagram.com/p/BxbJKLrA4Hw/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1e7xsj55yoi67

Read the full article

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The name is Saint, and it’s the modelling agency managed out of Jamaica which has produced a slew of international runway stars over the course of almost two decades. Success stories include that of Brandon Bailey, a hazel-eyed island boy who made his modelling debut on the Prada runway in Milan two years ago. Bailey followed up his Prada gig with runway appearances for the likes of Paul Smith, Berluti and Yeezy, plus a Ralph Lauren ad campaign. The male model is accompanied in his international success by fellow Saint models Tami Williams (a former face of Valentino and Calvin Klein Collection, who recently walked in Chanel’s Métier d’Art show in Tokyo) and Kai Newman (a former face of Ralph Lauren and runway fixture who’s walked for the likes of Gucci, Prada, Loewe and Burberry Prorsum).
Each year, to celebrate his models' (international) achievements, Saint founder Deiwght Peters shuts down Kingston’s Knutsford Boulevard – one of the city’s busiest roads – for the sake of an outdoor runway fest called Fashion Block, for one night only. Completed with a DJ set and sponsored bar, the event is open to the Kingston public, which watches in awe as the global ambassadors of Jamaican beauty strut down the runway.
Absent from this year’s Fashion Block festivities was Barbra Lee Grant, a recent Saint success story who stars in the fall/winter 2017 ad campaign of Paris-based fashion house Balenciaga. Nonetheless, Jamaican fashion industry darlings Lydia Barnett (a fresh-faced 16-year-old who made her debut on the runways of Fausto Puglisi and Philipp Plein in Milan) and Naki Depass (a Jamaica-based Accounting student who models for the likes of Céline, Isabel Marant and Giorgio Armani in her spare time) made sure to make a turn on the Fashion Block runway as dancehall beats played in the background.
Joseph Degbadjo

So how does he do it? Operate a modelling agency from an island which total population is circa 2.8 million, and get his models to land some of the sweetest gigs in the business. And more importantly, where does he find them? The former banker won’t reveal all his scouting tactics, but many of his discoveries were made at local schools, or random places around the island where you’d least expect a model scout to pop up. Case in point, Tevin Steele, who was discovered by Peters while on the job as a coconut seller. The male model made his debut on the Saint Laurent runway in Paris earlier this year.
Recommended by Forbes
“Soon after starting out, I researched and observed a lot and quickly realized that most of fashion's prestigious brands have a common theme - they want a model whose aesthetic in terms of body lines and features is consistent with their own international ideals. The look must be trans-continental, as these brands are global in their appeal. The clients are very, very selective with discerning tastes. Therefore, in my own search for model faces, I try as much as possible to tick all the boxes in advance for the clients, casting directors, stylists and designers. Over the years, the consistency of delivering world-class talent, will result in a particular level of trust and mutually respectful relationship with agents, casting directors and stylists. There are challenges of course for black models, but I do see much advancement with diversity on the top runways. I continue to give thanks and be humbled that my models continue to work at the highest level of the business,” the banker-turned-model agent says.
Joseph Degbadjo

Peters’ male models are currently gearing up for the men’s fashion weeks across London, Milan and Paris, and it promises to be a good season. Long-time Saint male model Brad Allen is the current face of Polo Ralph Lauren, whereas newcomers Jermaine Downer and Jonny Brown receive regular paychecks from the likes of Louis Vuitton, Burberry and Missoni. As Saint’s 20th birthday is approaching (in the year 2020), its founder still has one dream left: ‘’The mission was always to find the best black models in the region – both male and female - and get them to work with the most prestigious designers, stylists and brands in the world. I think I have seen the mission accomplished through several manifestations. Seeing Kai (Newman) and Tami (Williams) - from a cast of five - in an extensive spread for American Vogue, or Tami twice on the cover of French Elle, is consistent with the vision that my models are exceptional ambassadors for the world's most prestigious fashion brands. There is one mission left, and that's to see a fabulous American or British group cover of my models - males and females - shot right here in Jamdown (Jamaica).”

Star Makeup Artists Create Exclusive Eye Looks – WWD
https://ift.tt/2TyrwqS
Face masks are now a wardrobe staple, causing the eye to gravitate to, well, the eyes.
That may be good news for eye makeup, which is making a return to the spotlight. According to The NPD Group, makeup sales rose 6 percent week-over-week for the period ending May 8, with the eye category gaining 13 percent, versus a 1 percent uptick for lips. The biggest winners: eyeliner and mascara, both up 18 percent, and brow products, which rose 15 percent. While the makeup category has been challenged for much of the last year, the coronavirus crisis could help it make a comeback. “This could be a bright spot for makeup,” said Larissa Jensen, vice president and beauty industry analyst at NPD. “Consumers are still at the level of caution in terms of going out and revenge shopping, but when you look at sales on a week-by-week basis, we’re definitely seeing a lot of growth.”
Here, Beauty Inc asked some leading makeup artists to create an ultimate eye look for the new normal.
Linda Cantello, International Makeup Artist, Giorgio Armani Beauty
“This look is simple, easy and efficient but also sultry.”
Daniel Martin, @danielmartin
“My inspiration was taken from being in Paris for fashion week right before the quarantine happened. It’s all about vibrant Day-Glo color blocking in a range of colors, contrasted against radiant, dewy skin. The full look is optimistic, refreshing and fun!”
Gucci Westman, Founder, Westman Atelier, @gucciwestman
“I’m super excited about our upcoming launch — the Eye Pods Collection. They’re luminous cream-powder eye shadows designed for blendability and rich color-payoff minus any questionable ingredients. I love earthy, metallic shades around the eyes for a modern smoky eye.”
Erin Parsons, Maybelline New York Global Makeup Artist, @erinparsonsmakeup
“I was inspired by brows circa 2000. This is how I would wear them 20 years ago. The eyes transformed into a Peggy Moffitt-esque moment. And the mask was painted on using black paint and flocking powder.”
Terry Barber, MAC Director of Makeup Artistry, MAC Cosmetics, @terrybarberonbeauty
“Big and bold. When a trend in makeup takes on an ‘all eyes’ direction then it’s a good time for a no-holds-barred approach, with brighter color, inky lines, strong Sixties shapes and, of course, never skimping on the mascara. There’s no better moment to make some experimental choices and throw everything at it.”
Doniella Davy, Head Makeup Artist, HBO’s Euphoria, @donni.davy
“Blue Skies Ahead. Done on a hot day in L.A. while thinking of swimming pools. I blended several shades of milky blue eyeshadow from ColourPop’s Blue Moon palette; incorporating a darker shade into my crease, swooping a medium shade out toward my temples in a cat-eye shape and finishing with a lighter shade blended up into my brow bone as well as in the inner corners of my eyes. I embellished the look with three long tear-drop-shaped iridescent gems on the outer corners of my eyes and a single tiny round gem on my inner corners. I paired the look with a rich warm coral-peach lip to complement the cool tones on my eyes.”
Lisa Eldridge, Global Creative Director, Lancôme, @lisaeldridgemakeup
“This look was all about the eyes. I sketched out a strong shape using smoky tones of black and gray eye shadow and then added highlights of metallic bronze to the venture of the top lid and along the lower lash line. Black kohl pencil through the waterline and lashings of black Hypnôse Drama mascara finished the look.”
Peter Philips, Creative & Image Director, Dior Makeup, @peterphilipsmakeup
“For this look I opted for an out winged smoky cat eye. I start with a primer, then I apply a soft matte clear shade all over the eyelid, up until just above the ‘crease.’ I blended gently a darker shade into the inner eye corner and an even darker one on the outer corner. In the middle of the eyelid, I used a luminous satin gold, the contrast between the darker shades and the luminous shade will give extra depth to your eye. I avoided putting too much makeup on the bottom part of the eye. The masks tend to rub against the under eye area, and that creates ‘raccoon eyes.’ Also make sure to properly draw and fill in your eyebrows.”
Violette, Global Beauty Director, Estée Lauder, @violette_fr
“Creating a professional smoky eye doesn’t require you to have professional gear. Anyone can create an easy smoky eye look using one pencil, to keep the focus on the eyes.”
François Nars, @narsissist
“Put the emphasis on your eyes, because it’s all you can see with the mask. Make them as big as possible. I wanted a very smoky eye, and directed and photographed the concept for this look with Lena Koro, global artistic director for Nars with whom I’m in quarantine.”
Hector Espinal, Global Makeup Artist, Fenty Beauty, @artbyhector
“This look is a celebration of color, freedom and strength. We should all play with color right now as an uplifting experience and demonstration of our strength, through bold lines and bold shades.”
Gilbert Soliz, Global Makeup Artist, Marc Jacobs Beauty, @gilbert_soliz
“Purple Eyes inspired by the Daisy Sweet Pea birth flower of April. It’s meaning represents purity, innocence, and blissful pleasure.”
Deepica Mutyala, Founder, Live Tinted, @deepica
“A beautiful berry shade on my eyes keeps me happy right now. Bright colors are intimidating to wear, but the Live Tinted Huestick in Free makes it super wearable and easy. All you do is swipe and dab it out.”
Keiko Lynn, @keikolynn
“This look is a blend of smoky halo eye shadow and Sixties graphic eye makeup: up top, a peachy matte and grays on the inner and outer corners, blended through the crease, and with a shimmery peach patted into the center of the eyelid. The bottom has a graphic lower liner reminiscent of the Sixties, but smudged and softened. Lashes up top and bottom!”
Angel Merino, Founder, Artist Couture, @mac_daddyy
“Just because we have to wear face masks doesn’t mean your eyes have to be boring and basic! They’re the windows to your soul and now your canvas to express yourself! I like for my eyes to look more ‘foxy’ and I achieve that look using Mink eye shadow from my Supreme Nudes palette to create a smoked-out wing when I’m feeling extra sassy!”
Manny Gutierrez, @mannymua733
“A soft peachy look, perfect for spring and summer and a false lash really brings attention and drama to the eyes.”
Jackie Aina, @jackieaina
My favorite color is blush pink, and I’m always finding ways to incorporate pinks in my makeup looks. For this look, I used the new Anastasia Beverly Hills Norvina Vol. 4 eye shadow palette to create a subtle and flirty, everyday wearable eye look.”
Pat McGrath, founder and ceo, Pat McGrath Labs, @patmcgrathreal
“Masks are an opportunity for everyone to ROSE TO THE OCCASION with divinely dramatic eyes. This look is created with Pat McGrath Labs new Mothership VIII #DivineRoseII Eye Palette. This sublimely sultry smoke creates a ravishing rose look using shades ‘Xtreme Burgundy,’ a deepened burgundy matte, on the crease and ‘Rose Seduction,’ a vivid magenta satin, on the center of the eye. BLOOM WITHOUT CAUTION!”
Sir John, title tk, L’Oréal Paris, @sirjohn
“With everything that is going on, ours eyes have become more of a focal point in our daily routines. Here I wanted to create a sense of punctuation for the eyes by incorporating some shine. Add a bit of reflection to the center of the lid to create a focal point and enhance the natural shape of the eye with deeper taupe tones to refine the look. Our skin is still equally as important. Even though we are wearing masks we must continue to protect the skin underneath. Be sure to hydrate the skin and lips for a perfect canvas. Add a bit of light reflection to the high points of the face, enhancing your cheek bones”
