50 Facts about 10 Extremely Well-Known Paintings:
1. The Arnolfini Portrait - Van Eyck
- This painting was made in 1434 using oil-based paint on oak wood.
- Most viewers interpret Van Eyck’s wife standing on the right as being pregnant, but instead she is is simply holding up her full size skirt which was fashionable at the time. The more clothing you wore, the wealthier you were thought to be.
- The use of bright colors is also meant to highlight the wealth of the couple in addition to the clothing they are wearing.
- The painting was previously thought to have been a portrait of Giovanni di Arrigo Arnolfini and his wife Giovannna Cenami, but now it is thought that the couple was not married until 13 after the painting was made. There are now many different interpretations of the painting and ideas regarding the subject matter and themes.
- Van Eyck had to use multiple layers of paint on top of each other to get the deep colors he aspired to, which also aided in his creation of textures at the same time.
2. The Feast of Sada - Sultan Muhammad
- This work was created in 1525 using opaque watercolor, ink, silver and gold on paper.
- It is based on the Iranian winter festival, Sada, which was created to celebrate the epic hero Hushang, who attempted to throw stones at a dragon but hit a larger rock instead and discovered fire. To celebrate this new knowledge Hushang created another fire and threw a feast.
- The oval composition of this piece was typical of Muhammad’s style.
- The inscriptions on the painting are words from a poem about the story of Hushang.
- The people in the painting seem to be dressed in traditional Iranian clothing and the different plants are most likely native to that country as it was painted there.
3. The Two Fridas - Frida Khalo
- This work was completed in 1939 after Frida and Diego Rivera got divorced.
- Initially, Frida wrote about the painting as originating from her memory of an imaginary friend, however she later admitted to it being about her desperation and loneliness post-divorce.
- In 1947 it was bought by the National Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico City for 4,000 pesos.
- There is a reproduction of the piece in the Frida Khalo Museum in Coyoacan, Mexico.
- The Frida in the left is shown in modern European clothing, while the Frida on the right is wearing a tradition Mexican dress. This is because she wore the european dress throughout her marriage with Diego, but during the marriage she became increasingly more interested in her Mexican heritage, as Diego was fascinated by it as well.
4. Portrait of Yun Dongseom - Unidentified Korean Artist
- This is a painting created between 1790 and 1805.
- The media used was ink and color on silk, and this was created on a hanging scroll.
- The subject of the painting, Yun Dongseom, was a scholar, calligrapher, and civil-official.
- This would have traditionally functioned as a centerpiece of a family shrine that paid tribute to the male figureheads of the family.
- The time the work was painted in was narrowed by the dating of the belt Yun is wearing, which was made of rhinoceros horn and gold, and was expressive of a higher status that was achieved by Yun in 1790, five years before his death. Then, it is assumed that the painting could have also been painted ten years after his death as a tribute to him, creating the 1790 to 1805 timeline.
5. Fruit and a Jug on a Table - Cezanne
- This was created between the years of 1890 and 1894.
- The media used was oil and it was put on a canvas.
- Cezanne explained why he liked to paint fruit through this quote: “As to flowers, I have given them up. They wilt immediately. Fruits are more reliable.” This shows he took his time painting.
- During Cezanne’s time, still life paintings were considered to be the “lowliest genre” of art.
- “Painting from nature is not copying the object,” he wrote, “it is realizing one’s sensations.” This quote was a response by Cezanne to the criticisms of still life.
6. Dora Maar in an Armchair - Picasso
- This work is an oil painting on a canvas.
- It was created in 1939, during the outbreak of World War Two.
- Dora Maar was a surrealist photographer and was Picasso’s girlfriend at the time.
- It is said that the background and patterns were representative of the wallpaper in Picasso and Maar’s room at the Hôtel du Tigre when they were staying in France.
- The surrealism of the painting might be a way to mimic the nature of Maar’s photography style.
7. Composition 8 - Kandinsky
- This is an oil painting on a canvas.
- The work was created in 1923.
- Composition 8 was on of the first paintings bought by Solomon R. Guggenheim in 1930. It is now part of a collection in the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
- “Form itself, even if completely abstract ... has its own inner sound,” said Kandinsky about the abstraction of his work.
- The work was more geometric than his previous work, Composition 7.
8. Two Calla Lilies on Pink - Georgia O’Keefe
- This is another oil painting on a canvas.
- It was made in 1928.
- O’Keefe’s floral paintings are often interpreted as being symbolic of sexuality and gender, but she disregards these ideas as being too specific.
- Georgia O’Keefe once said "What is my experience of the flower if not color,” showing how important color was in her paintings.
- Elements of the style of the painting were taken from the photographs of Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, Paul Strand, and Charles Sheeler. Georgia admired the idea of isolating specific details and magnifying images.
9. Splash Down Apollo 13 - Alma Thomas
- “Through color, I have sought to concentrate on beauty and happiness, rather than on man’s inhumanity to man,” Thomas said when discussing her abstract paintings such as this one.
- This work was modeled after images if the Apollo moon missions.
- The painting was made in 1970.
- The media was acrylic paint and it was used on a canvas.
- It was made into a quilt for the former First Lady, Michelle Obama.
10. Untitled (Skull) - Basquiat
- The painting was created in 1982.
- This work was sold for $110.5 million at an auction. It is rare for a work to be sold for more than $100 million.
- It set the records for the amount of money spent for a work by any American artist, by any African-American artist, and as the first work since 1980 to make over $100 million.
- The media used was acrylic on a canvas.
- While many of Basquiat’s other paintings only took a few days this one took months to create.
