40 Day Anime Challenge 2023 Edition - Day 14: A trope you can't stand

The Perceived Pervert (and getting slapped to death despite being innocent)

(this was the closest photo I could find idk. Plus, it's from Girls Bravo, which is an excellent example of why I hate this trope)

Look, I tolerate MANY stupid things in anime. Fanservice, dubious relationships, manga vs anime shitty characterization choices, etc etc. But there's one trope that always gets me rolling my eyes and lowkey embarrassed that I love anime, especially of the early 2000s breed: The Perceived Pervert.

Now, you might think I'd hate the ACTUAL perverts in anime, but I generally don't, because 9 times out of 10 they get their comeuppance, one way or another. Or they're a genuinely good character (ie, Miroku from Inuyasha) and show a lot of growth underneath their, uh, "bad habits." There are exceptions, of course (looking at YOU, Happosai, from Ranma 1/2 😒), but it's actually the UNINTENDED perverts who irritate me the most.

Because it is always they who get the worst punishments by seemingly "unreasonable" girls, all for accidentally walking in on them naked or some bullshit. Sometimes, it's even stupider: case in point, the photo I used is from Girls Bravo in which the first episode opens with hapless male MC coming home, heading to HIS OWN BATHROOM, and finding his childhood friend using it WITHOUT HIS KNOWLEDGE OR CONSENT, and what happens next? SHE flips out and punches him out, screaming that HE'S the nasty pervert!! WTF?!

The worst part of this trope is that it paints victims of assault as hysterical, biased, unreasonable, and violent. In other words, JUST AS BAD AS THE PERVERTS THEY HATE SO MUCH. It's exhausting being a feminist and an anime fan sometimes, I swear to gods -.-"
