The name's Snekker, and I write fanfiction (presumably). finally got around to creating a blog for it!

I'm currently writing for the DSMP, more specifically SBI, but I can't promise some MHA or One PIece might sneak on here. As for right now though, it's mostly block men.

First Date Headcanons with David Webster

So you see, of course our favorite Harvard boy will take you to the fucking aquarium (Cliche and obvious? Yes. But like where else, I mean seriously??)

When you first got together the first thing he promised you was an aquarium date, and well looky here, he fulfilled that promise.

Ok, so y’all pull up to the building and you can see waves of literal euphoria coming out of him. He’s just so adorable and he has a little bit of pep in his step when walking towards the entrance. 

And then every time he walks, his poofy brown hair bounces up and down and the way the suns hits it is *chefs kiss*-

Even before you get to the entrance, your boyfriend is gushing about marine animals. They were short descriptions of a multitude of animals but they were so detailed and captivating, you couldn’t help but listen.

However, his voice was a bit distracting at times and you could find yourself zoning out while he talked. 

A look of awe is plastered on your hand and your hold on his hand tightens ever so slightly.

It’s safe to say that you learned more about ocean animals in those brief moments than you ever could from your years in school.

Y’all bust in the aquarium like the iconic couple you two are (I’m so proud of you) and boy oh boy is David cute as hell.

Here he is-- a grown ass man who went to Harvard and literally served in WW2-- looking like a child discovering a shiny rock. You love it-

David is indecisive as hell and he had no idea where to go. He turns over to look at you with those beautiful eyes of his and you can’t help but smile.

You two pull up those maps of the building and you two plan out the rest of your date. Your fingers trail over the paper, trying to figure out where to go first.

You two make up this intricate schedule and you knowingly look at each other when your eyes find where the shark exhibit was.

But at the beginning of your date Web held your hand as you two viewed various wildlife vibin in the water behind the glass.

You were in heaven when you saw how the water played so beautifully on the your boyfriend’s face. 

David was oblivious to how you stared at him in awe and you were oblivious to whenever he did the same to you.

You named a crab after Johnny and a particularly cute clownfish was named after Babe. You two had a heated discussion on who Winters was. 

(Y’all never settled on anything. Web thought he’d be a red snapper. You personally think he’d either be a blue marlin or a swordfish.)

He called you his angelfish and you hit him on the arm for being so cheesy. After that he said that you were a flame angelfish instead and you could only playfully roll your eyes at him.

Get prepared for literally a shit ton of fish trivia this boy will never shut up and he just wants to gush about it to you, it’s very wholesome and sweet actually.

He knows a lot because he either has a whole 100000 page book about the sea printed on his brain or something or because he has the literal ocean in his eyes.

Look I can’t tell at this point-

The two of you were going to every single exhibit this aquarium had to offer and there was no stopping you.

Sadly that intricate schedule is unceremoniously yeeted out the window because when you head over to the next place you're stopping at you two see something else you like and head there instead.

“(Y/N)! I thought we were seeing the penguins next-”

“But Web, the seals! Look at the seal exhibit!”

You’re gripping his arm and looking at him with your stunning face, how could he say no to you? 

So he lets an exaggerated sigh and nods his head as he tries to contain his grin.

You two went over to the seal exhibit instead kasjhd- Y’all still got to see the penguins, it’s all ight.

While gawking at the beautiful fish species you saw, Web seemed to know a heaping mount about a lotta of em. The facts he didn’t tell you earlier he says now and you’re just like “look at my smart Harvard boy go-”

The amount of times you wanted to just make a scrapbook that is dedicated to this day alone is nearly impossible to keep track of. The both of you wanted to cherish this aquarium date for all eternity.

Cause literally there’s this one moment where you’re looking over at tropical fish and Web was reading the description. Oh what would happen next-

As you’re admiring the way the small fishes swam gracefully Web legit goes on a rant on how they got some information on the Tiger Barb wrong.

This adorable idiot I- I can’t even at this point.

But Web holds you in his arms as he buries his face in your hair while looking at fish send tweet. 

He also wraps his arms around your waist and he rests his head on top of yours. He makes comments about some of the fish and you just sink into his embrace.

Also one thing you did keep from your schedule after not following it was visiting the petting pool after you two ate lunch.

When I say that you two nyoomed over to the petting pool area I mean y’all nyoomed-- Like full Speirs mode on-- because Jesus Christ this is an aquarium and David will obviously take you to the petting pool.

You two arrived there and my Lord you swore that David was holding back a squeal. The two of you immediately rolled up your sleeves and went over to dip your hands to touch the animals in the pool.

The look you gave Web when you touched a cownose ray-- it was precious. 

You also couldn’t hold your excitement as a few more smaller rays glided under the pads of your fingertips.

Then there were the horseshoe crabs and yknow those tiny fish that like swarm your hand and tickle you, yeah those too.

Y’all also chill it out and get to wash the jellyfish. The way the room was dark gave it a whole nother vibe, my loves. 

Like in  that jellyfish room, you two will most definitely just hold each other while gazing at the glass.

Bro, in the dim room, he’ll just pull you close and place a chaste kiss on your forehead and lips.

The bioluminescence of the jellyfish illuminates Webster’s face, making his features appear more sharp. Simping time commence, you two are a fine af couple.

Now time for the real kicker- It’s shark time

After dragging your ass to almost all of the other exhibits in the aquarium, Webster saved the shark exhibits near the end of the date.

Ohoho, was this boy eUPHORIC-

David is gripping your hand tightly and he’s constantly sending you smiles as you two walk closer to the entrance of the shark exhibit.

This is where Webster ascends out of his body, this is the second time he has (first time was when he met you and started dating). 

You share his happiness and the utter vibes comin off from your boyfriend makes you so soft and full of glee.

Yknow his constant face when his eyes are focused on something and his mouth is just slightly parted? Well that is his face most of the time during your time there.

Webster did write a wholeass book about them, what did you expect?

The utter passion and fascination in his voice really stands out whenever he talks about these beautiful babies- 

Like sure, David sounds happy when he talks about other sea animals, but with sharks? Whole nother level. 

It’s one of his biggest quirks and my goodness do you just stand there taking in all his facts as he goes on a tangent about different types of shark species.

The light in his eyes as they trail over as they trail over a sand shark swimming by. He’ll also just stare at a leopard shark while smiling because he loves them.

After leaving the shark exhibit after spending 1 hour in there with your boyfriend, you two decide to go home- But first, y’all buying some things from the giftshop. 

Webster will spoil you and will buy you anything you want in the aquarium gift shop.

Wallets beware, you’d also do the same for him.

There was this jellyfish theme hat you saw and you made David try it on- He looked so fucking stupid but like a cute kinda stupid.

You regret not buying it when you had the chance-

However- You two got shark plushies together. You got a tiger shark plushy and he gots a hammerhead. 

You two absolutely love them and you could’ve sworn you could’ve just burst from happiness when he showed you the tiger shark plush he got for you.

You two also bought those chonky seal plushies because I mean... I mEAN- Just look at em, they’re stunning of course you and Web had to get em.

With a day well spent with your boyfriend you just wanted nothing more but to lay with David on your bed as you run your fingers through your hair.

So you two leave the aquarium building smiling and laughing. Webster leans in a gives you another soft kiss on your lips and you let out a giggle. 

The two of you are noticeably happier, and you two head back to the car. The date ends with your hand in his and your four new plushies in tow.

I'm a big indecisive softy so I couldn't answer any of those. Last one clearly indicates a certain **theme** in the game 🤔

Long ask - long answer! Like, very long.  The following is based on my personal opinions, visions of characters, marriage, human behaviour etc etc, and I’m fine if you disagree with me. Also, warning - adult topics.

Okay, the input info: 

- I think for myself, not for my prophetess (what I am: mid twenties female who values personal space in a relationship the most).  - I don’t turn it into modern au.  - This is “fuck/marry/kill”, not “snug/marry/kill” (I believe it’s implied, but still, ADULT TOPICS AHEAD) - For me(for this game) marriage is a combo of the first of our wonderful three-positions list, the lack of wish to implement the third and commitment. If optimistic – even fruitful coexistence. I keep in mind marriage is stability and all. - “Kill” is mostly “off the table” for those characters I can’t see fitting for any of the first two positions. That doesn’t mean I want to kill them, except I specifically state so. 

1. Tharaêl, Jespar, Calia Starting with the hardest one.I’m telling bye to Calia, alas. She’s too lawful, and I’d be very grey morality-wise if put to their realities. Besides, she has these sub vibes and I agree with opinions she might be very dom when it comes to intimacy, but her whole sadness aura is not for me. I don’t want to deal with it if I don’t have to.  Jespar: we know what he thinks of any relationship - “as long as I feel like it - I’m here for it, else - adiós” and it’s pretty common for our world, but as we’re in a medieval and religious community, I believe open relationship is not common at all. I am thinking about marriage possibilities here, yes. He wouldn’t like the idea – it involves commitment. And I assume he’s the closest to me personality-wise, so we could be close friends, but I *want* commitment. Whether the relationship hits low or we’re doing pretty good – I want my spouse to be with me. Jespar is known for running away when things get bad. So yeah, he stays just for one night. And it seems I have to marry Tharael. Well… He’s very ESTJ, but I don’t mind if he takes care of, welp, everything. Pros: his understanding of “family” is quite classic to our world as well. Remember what he says in the Refuge - “no one will have to mourn me - no widow, no children, no friends”. So in his head he tried to fit the roles of a husband and a father(still can’t see how he’s capable of it, but he definitely gave it some thinking). Family for him = wife and kids. He acknowledges and accepts the commitment. Besides, he seems to be very responsible and reliable. He also tries to be rational, sometimes he even manages. And, as I see the Rhalata as a military formation, having spent 8 years there, he is very straightforward and strict/precise/exact (pick the right word). If something’s being said – rarely hidden context is implied. It makes communication much easier. Cons: he is explosive and I have strong suspicions he might be of jealous type. It is manageable, though. Especially if you set a list of rules together what is acceptable and what needs further explanations. He’s used to living following rules, so give him new ones and he’ll feel more confident. But careful, as it may play against you. Been there done that. Rules are cool as long as they’re acceptably flexible and you’re not trying to find how to cheat and break them. 

But out of these three, he is the husband material, at least for me. I’m not mentioning any intimacy above, as it would break the game for Tharael at all. But if elaborating – I don’t even know how you would drag him to your bedroom when he’s aware what he is and absolutely not aware what this new “shell” may produce as kids, if it is capable of it at all. So I politely ignore this fact. (In my otp it works as I headcanon the prophet can’t have children)

2. Tharaêl, Dijaam, Esme Why I would marry Esme: she *is* commitment. She cares a lot for a person she’s close to. She cares even after their relationship is not a thing anymore. I love this personality trait, and I’d like to see it in a potential spouse. I’m not sure what kind of relationship she prefers tho, if it’s open like Jespar wants them to be, I start doubting and think of picking Tharael again(not telling Tharael doesn’t care as much; in fact, he cares more). If not an open relationship – Esme is “lighter” than him, but also much more naive. But it’s okay, I can be oversuspicious for the both of us. So, marry Esme. And sorry, Dijaam, I have to kill you as I like Tharael more 🤷🏻‍♀️ 

3. Tealor, Coarek, Yuslan Ah, tricky. Yuslan once had a family – he’s capable of it, they were happy, so I’d pick him for marriage. I know how Qyranian people handle families and marriage, and poly relationships are definitely not my thing, but what he had was very “classy”, so I’m good.Tealor failed to have a family. He barely tried at all. Taranor – the lore never mentioned anything about any love interests. I guess not much difference here picking who to fuck and who to kill. I just pick what looks better, so… kill Tealor.

4. “Iconic Vendors Fresh and Tasty Bread, huh no I just place them out for you to look at, my wares it is you want to see I promise you they bring you glee” I barely trade in the game, I hoard everything😅 I know the first one is Marita, the second phrase is not unique to just one character and the last one I simply can’t remember. But I don’t want to do anything with the mean trader, so I kill him. Marita will be my friend.

6. “more "cuddle once, have as a pet, abandon (give to a loving person to take care of)"Whirlwind (Donkey), Standard Brown horse (not Svart), Cuthbert (the dead (& kinky) mini pig of Maxus Tabaccus, the summoned form not alive one of him)” I’m keeping the ghost pig as it’s somewhat intelligent, doesn’t need food and grooming and takes care of itself in general. If given the choice, I wouldn’t pick anything. Commitment, commitment… As for the other two hoofed frens, no difference really. I’d patpat both, but I don’t want to own a pet.

7. The Father, Daddy, Ketaron Dal'Geyss (Rynéus' Father) Ahh yess daddy issues :D It’s actually simple for me. Daddy I would kill. Huge no. No-no-no. Firstly, he’s a father figure (and you associate yourself with the prophet), so no “snug”, no marriage, no anything. Kill him and that’s all. Ketaron I have to pick for just one night as I don’t see it possible for me to survive under the same roof with this shitty person… So I marry the Father. Nothing physical and it won’t be much I would have to contribute to this relationship but it would be interesting to learn new things, at least. Still, I can see it as “I don’t bother you with your business, you don’t bother me, we just coexist without hate and sometimes I ask dumb questions” That’s all. And no, I won’t try to change anything about the Father. I’d better prefer to avoid any contacts. Serious questions here, being put into a position of spouse would make me shave my head or not 🤔

29, one headcanon about this OTPthat breaks your heartThe whole canon? Bwhahaha (broken, sad laughing). As for headcanon: he carrieda photograph of her anywhere he went after he escaped from custody.

As for the following parts, a confession: I’ve never written either ships before. I low-key ship Pepperony, in a “it happens, and it should happen” kind of way, and I don’t care much for Clintasha, either way–I wouldn’t have minded if they got together in canon, but it didn’t hurt me that they didn’t. Anyway, I hope I made them justice :)

           1. Who is the most affectionate?Scott, I think. Scott shows his love via little touches and by being affectionate, Lydia shows it in everyday gestures.

          2. Big spoon/Little spoon?Scott is the big spoon, Lydia is the little spoon.

          3. Most common argument?I think money ? Lydia, as being someone who grew up with lots of money, would spend it in a way Scott, as being someone who grew up with a tight budget, would sometimes find carefree.

          4. Favorite non-sexual activity?Oh, wow, I don’t really know ? 

          5. Who is most likely to carry the other?(I have no idea if the questions means carrying each other figuratively or litteraly but oh well) When they’re older, Scott gives Lydia piggy back rides when her feet hurt too much after work (or else) black tie evenings. 

          6. What is their favorite feature of their partner’s?Lydia loves Scott hands and Scott is in awe of Lydia’s eyes.

          7. What’s the first thing that changes when they realize they have feelings for the other?When Scott first realizes it, he acts kind of weird around her for a while because “oh mY GOD IT’S LYDIA STILES IS GONNA KILL ME”. When Lydia realizes it, the way she smiles around Scott changes. 

          8. Nicknames? & if so, how did they originate?I think they’re kind of opposites on that ? Like Lydia loves giving nicknames when she’s in a relationship (honey, love, sweetie, etc.) but Scott just never uses them. He does call her Lydie sometimes though and after they get engaged, he occasionnally calls her “love of my life”

          9. Who worries the most?Definitely Lydia.

          10. Who remembers what the other one always orders at a restaurant?Scott knows Lydia’s coffee order, Lydia knows Scott order at fancy restaurants

          11. Who tops?Is that even a question ? Both.

          12. Who initiates kisses?I think both ? Although Lydia might initiate kisses a bit more while Scott would initiate other less obvious demonstrations of affection (hand holding, drawing circles on her thighs with the tip of his fingers when she’s sitting on his laps, small cheek kisses, placing his hand on the bottom of her back when they’re standing next to each other, etc.) ?

          13. Who reaches for the other’s hand first?Well, as said right before, Scott. 

          14. Who kisses the hardest?Lydia. (especially with “thank god you’re alive” kisses) 

          15. Who wakes up first?Lydia. The rare times Scott wakes up before her, he tries to make her breakfast (she wakes up before he’s done most of the time though)

          16. Who wants to stay in bed just a little longer?Scott omg.

          17. Who says I love you first?Scott. Lydia says it right afterwards, but Scott says it first.

          18. Who leaves little notes in the other’s one lunch? (Bonus: what does it usually say?)Lydia does it. For no special occasions, just because she wants to, but not everyday though. Scott does it too but on big occasions (new jobs, promotions, big conferences, etc.) Lydia’s usually say things like “Have a good day, I love you

          19. Who tells their family/friends about their relationship first?They both tell the pack together. Scott tells his mom first (she loves Lydia and she’s been waiting for them to get together for like a year so her only response is just “finally, thank god”) and then Lydia tells her own mom and her dad afterwards.

          20. What do their family/friends think of their relationship?I think Stiles would kinda be mad at first ? Like, he’s not even in love with her anymore, but it’s Lydia. He warms up to it after seeing how happy they are together though (and also he kinda saw it coming because they’ve been kind of obvious about their feelings for like a year so yeah). The pack and their family are all very happy because “finally” and let’s be honest, they’re adorable.

          21. Who is more likely to start dancing with the other?Scott. I can totally see them, in their kitchen, talking, the radio on, far in the living room. A soft song that both of them absolutely adore comes on and Scott would just look at her, smile, and take her hands. He’d start slowly making her dance, looking at her in the eyes, smiling. She’d have a little laugh, and they would just start slow dance in the kitchen. Lydia’s head resting on his shoulder, his hand on her back, the warm light, the soft music. They never would have been happier.

          22. Who cooks more/who is better at cooking?Actually, I kind of see them both cooking ? At first, I pictured Scott burning down the kitchen but I mean with his mom working night shifts (and sometimes forgetting to eat), I guess he learnt to cook at some point. So both would know how to cook, but I actually think Scott would cook more. I could see him loving cooking because it calms him down and he just loves cooking for people he cares about. She’d always stay with him while he’s cooking though. She’d sit on a chair or one of the worktops and they’d just talk and laugh.

          23. Who comes up with cheesy pick up lines?Okay, so I have this headcanon that once, they were hanging out (sitting on the couch, Lydia’s legs on Scott laps, Lydia reading, Scott on his phone) and Scott found a terrible pick up line. It made him laugh, so he raised his head, looked at Lydia with his little smile and went “Hey, Lydie ?” and said it. She raised an eyebrow. “That was terrible”. She couldn’t help but smile though. It kind of became a game between them. When they would find bad pick up lines, they’d say or send it to one another. They would even try to come up themselves with some when they’d be bored. (I could totally see Lydia receiving a text with a terrible pick up line in it at a random time and sending him “don’t you have a big meeting today ?” and getting an answer saying “yeah it’s incredibly boring” the next second)

          24. Who whispers inappropriate things in the other’s ear during inappropriate times?LYDIA, OMG. It’s her favorite game. Scott gets flustered so easily so it’s incredibly funny to do. Btw Scott totally always tops when they get home those nights 

          25. Who needs more assurance?I think Lydia ? And Scott would do the best job at giving it to her.

          26. What would be their theme song?I think “I Want To Hold Your Hand” by the Beatles is an amazing song for them ? (yes this is a link to the Glee version but it’s softer and everything and it suits them better than the original version imo) “I’ll Stand By You” by The Pretenders is good too because Lydia is literally the only one who never ever doubted him and Scott always stayed by her side. ”Kiss Me” by Ed Sheeran is also so accurate for them ? I could also see a very cute scene between them going on with that music in the background. Idk man there’s so many

          27. Who would sing to their child back to sleep?Lydia. She’d have the softest voice and look when doing it. (Watching her do that, Scott would realize how damn lucky and how in love he is.)

          28. What do they do when they’re away from each other?I suppose this question is what do they do to stay in contact (I mean because they both have lives so like, when they’re away from each other, they have things to do and everything). So, I think they would text a lot (lots of random things btw. Small events that happened during their day, things they saw online, terrible pick up lines, quotes they like. Pretty much anything, really.) and if they’re apart for an extended period of time, I could see Skype nights and playing those board game thingies online made for long distance relationships. Scott also always buys her tons of little stupid gifts when they’re apart for a long period of time too, and Lydia takes lots of amazingly beautiful pictures and sends them to him.

          29. one headcanon about this OTP that breaks your heartDuring their first real big fight, there was screaming and at some point Scott lifted his arms in exasperation. Lydia flinched. (It was an old reflexe from the end of her relationship with Jackson.) It was brief, but Scott saw it. It immediately broke his heart. The sole idea that any part of Lydia, even the smallest, farthest one could think he would ever hurt her was awful to him but the fact that she had been so hurt in the past that this was an unconscious reflexe in her was much worst. The fight ended straight away and he immediately apologized, almost whispering to avoid scaring her, in the softest voice he could. His eyes showed incredible pain as he promised he would never ever hurt her. He thought about it for days and spent the following weeks (and the rest of his life) trying to make her feel more safe than she ever did. 

          30. one headcanon about this OTP that mends itThey always know how to cheer up each other. They know how to spot a fake smile on the other’s face from a million miles away. They know how to make each other laugh in the worst times. And they do. Whether it’s when they’re hanging out with the pack, or during a black tie work evening, an ordinary day at their apartment, a holiday, a family reunion, they do. No matter where or when, when they are the only one to notice the other feeling down for any random reason, they walk over to them and whisper in their hear just the right joke or sentence or do just the right thing. They cheer up each other and make each other happy in a way no one else could.

A Mini-Disseration on Fanfiction

So I’ve been reflecting a lot recently about why people write fanfiction and make fanworks, and I think I’ve kinda sorted it in to a couple of categories. I’m positive I am not the first, but I still wanted to put my thoughts down somewhere.

My subcategories:

Canon was cut off abruptly

Canon is lacking something

Canon is one genre, but the core ideas would be interesting to explore in another

I know this doesn’t seem like many categories, but the more I tried to add, the more I realized they all fit somewhere under these three. I’ll start with the first one

#1. Canon was cut off abruptly.

This is a fanfiction classic. Your show was cancelled, the author of the book gave up on the series or died, there was a cliffhanger for something that was never finished, networks screwed up, so on and so forth. Often times, these works try to stay as true to canon as possible, because the core material cuts off and therefore the works are trying to fill in the missing, vitally important finale/info. (There is also an interesting subcategory of fics written following other unfinished fics. Very cool phenomenon.)

Notable fandom examples:

Unfinished book/book series (Game of Thrones, Dune, anything with a suuuper long hiatus)

Cancelled tv shows (The Society, Sanditon, I Am Not Okay With This, The Get Down, Sense8, Agent Carter, Firefly, Hannibal, Pushing Daisies, Angel)

#2. Canon is lacking something.

This category covers a variety of sins. It’s important to note that this isn’t the same as #1 because the source material has been concluded, and the body of work is finished. There can be some blurred lines, especially with shows like Sense8, where they were cancelled and then had a special to round off what was supposed to be another few seasons, or original source material where the story technically didn’t end on a cliffhanger, it just ended when there was supposed to be more originally, but primarily this is for shows/material that had the amount of run time they wanted and were purposefully ended, or at least not against the will of the creators. So, this category includes a number of the most popular branches of fanworks including the following headcanons or au’s: more LGBTQ+ characters, more characters of color, more neurodivergent or mentally ill characters, scenes that could’ve been really cool if they had been included and/or not skipped over, scenes that never happened but fans think they should have, characters meeting that never did, crossovers, alternate universes where one thing changes (ie. canon divergences), different endings/retcons (happy ending or not), explicit content, and so the list goes on. A lot of my favorite types of fanworks are included in here.

Notable fandom examples:

Any and all non-canon LGBTQ+ relationships (John/Sherlock, Dean/Cas, Rizzoli/Isles, Remus/Sirius, Harry/Draco, Stiles/Derek, Xena/Gabrielle, Poe/Finn, Steve/Bucky or Steve/Tony or literally any combination of those characters)

Most Homestuck fanfiction

Any popular canon relationship that ended (HIMYM, most of Grey’s Anatomy, all of Glee)

Any show with a horrible ending/unpopular recent episodes (Sherlock, Game of Thrones, DW, Star Wars)

Any work with a popular character that died (Torchwood, Grey’s Anatomy again, Game of Thrones again, Buffy, OITNB, The 100, The Hunger Games, the entirety of Harry Potter, TFIOS)

And, finally

#3. Canon is one genre, but the core ideas would be interesting to explore in another.

Now, once again, I feel the need to specify why this category is separate from the last. So, I think the biggest difference between categories 2 and 3, is that while #2 expresses a lack of satisfaction with the original work, #3 is all about a deep adoration and love for the content that inspires a re-make or an au with canon events most intact, if not twisted to fit the new genre. Again, I can see the lines blurring somewhat. After all, there is content that I deeply adore, yet also feel like changing certain aspects of it. And to be clear, I think you can have fics that fall into multiple categories, if not all. But this sub-characterization relates specifically to honoring and reshaping the core content and ideas of the original work without major changes to the characters or messaging. And by this I absolutely do not mean headcanons about character ethnicity, race, culture, sexuality, or gender. I am specifically referring to someone taking a character like, say Frodo in LOTR, and rewriting the story with him as a wizard. A surface level change at first, however it changes the entire foundation of his character, which is that he goes on a journey from a humble, small, overlooked character to become a hero, proving the value of the everyman, and the quiet strength of peaceful people. Now, if someone wrote a fic where Frodo was thrown into a superhero au, where one day he gets superpowers by chance, that would fall under category #3. The first example would fuel an idea of what the story would be like if Frodo was immensely powerful, while the second maintains the character’s foundation, simply placing them into a new genre or setting in which those characteristics and themes can play out. This includes au’s that maintain canon events/character backstories even in slightly modified au’s.

Tattoo/Bookstore/Florist au’s

So, what’s the point?

There isn’t really a single point, I’m an academic weirdo who likes categorizing media and understanding the impulse that drives me and so many other people to consume and create fancontent, specifically fanfic. But, what I will say is that all three categories of work fulfill some need of a fan/consumer, and they can all be incredibly cathartic and/or a continuation of a deeply beloved original work. #1 appeals to those mourning the incomplete and premature ending of a show/book that they thought had a lot of potential. #2 appeals to people mourning the incompleteness of a finished work that could’ve had a lot more potential with some minor (or major) tweaks. #3 appeals to people who are mourning the ending of something they feel has the potential to be explored more, even if it was already explored well in the first place. This is how you get people writing novel length and longer fics, because they’re driven by dissatisfaction, even if they loved whatever the work is based on. I completely understand angrily rewriting an ending or a character, incorporating personal details or making a character more similar to oneself through the inclusion of various non-canonical identities. And, by no means am I implying one category contains better works than any other, but the creators who exist within the third category truly blow my mind at times, because this is often where you get people re-writing an entire series or movie from a different characters perspective, or people who write 300,000+ word coffee shop au’s or hogwarts au’s or spy au’s. This level of dedication honestly inspires me, because to go through the effort of re-intepreting and altering slightly an original work purely out of love and with little intent to directly contradict canon requires a level of devotion I can only aspire to. 

TL;DR 

And, finally, I want to say that I see all fancontent in any of these three categories as truly beautiful, because they are expressions of the human inclination to see the best in everything, and moreover, to try and leave things better than we found them. So yeah. That’s my word vomit for the moment. Happy writing.
