To give some backstory, my family's farm is located in the deep south in the midst of rural farm land and pine forest. My grandfather bought the land nearly 50 years ago super cheap and honestly we have had strange things happen. I grew up there and am just use to most of it, not that anything truly note worthy has happened but that's another day. This actually happened the other day, I'm visiting and after all the icey weather has cleared I really want to go camping. About an hours ride from the farm is an abandoned (for at least 30 years) cabin I use when the weather is cold. I tack up Snow, my buckskin Appaloosa mare, and distribute some of the supplies between her and my SD, Yakone (Snow only gets ridden during my visits every few months, so an hour ride with supplies may not be over taxing, she's still gonna be tired). The ride is down a dirt road then through pine forest, and really isn't eventful. Snow has been here quite a few times and Yakone has only been here one other time (I also want to note that Yakone is a Husky mix, nothing about this is going to tire her out). Now I love the pine forests, this is my childhood, and on this day the forest is absolutely alive. We see rabbits, hawks, doves, even a couple of quail and deer tracks. When we finally arrive at the old cabin I'm pretty sure I was the last inhabitant as my old skillet is still hanging in the window, however instead of dismounting and prepping for camp, I decided we should all explore a bit more. Snow still feels great, very much unwinded, and it's still early in the afternoon with hours of daylight left, and with that I push us toward the creek at the bottom of the hill behind the cabin. Now let me talk about the creek for a minute. Unofficially its known as Panther's Creek and all my childhood I was told to stay away from the creek, mostly because of the mud. See, in this part of the south, we have swamps that sorta pop outta nowhere and deep mud that still kills a few kids every year. That being said, I'm no longer a kid. I'm a grown ass adult, married with a degree, a career and everything. We get to the creek and I let Snow and Yakone drink their fill before deciding to cross it. There is no incident crossing, which is kinda surprising because Snow is not a fan of water, but I don't think much on it. We travel further into the forest, and just before I decide to turn back to the cabin, I see it. It's a tiny cabin, older with a kind of shelter attached to the side, like a garage. The front door is shut, but the front window is open. I immediately fall in love with it. It's a little further away from society, it's smaller, and there is a shelter attached to it perfect for my horse to use as a makeshift stall. After dismounting I check for signs of people and wildlife. Being so close to a water source I expect to see some signs but nothing. Definitely no signs of people, and hardly any signs of animals, I don't even see any rodent droppings in the corners of the cabin (which the door was unlocked). With the area determined to safe I untacked Snow and got her comfortable in her makeshift stall, giving her the hay we had brought and water from the creek. Next I prepared to the inside with my bed roll and gear before going back out to start the fire and supper. Again, all was pretty uneventful. We ate and drank out supper around the fire and enjoyed the sounds of the forest, and away from people. However, just as the sun was setting, dark clouds had gathered overhead and rain had started so Yakone and I headed inside where it was dry (only a few leaks). Again I checked on Snow, this time through a convenient window that peered into her stall, saw she safe and cozy, and decided to curl up with my dog and let the rain lull us to sleep. This was the most perfect picture camping trip I could have experienced. However, an unknown time later, I was awoken. The rain had stopped outside, but my dog, Yakone, was quietly whining next me, her eyes fixed on the door. Now, again something about my SD is that she is very quite despite being a Husky mix. Yakone very rarely ever makes a sound unless absolutely necessary. My heart is pounding and my mind is racing at all the possible threats. Slowly and quietly I grab my flashlight and pistol (.45 ACP, never leave home without it) and slowly crawl to the window looking into Snow's stall. Just barely I can make out the figure of my mare in the darkness, her body is rigid and all of her attention is forward, toward the creek. Again I duck down and make my way slowly now toward the front window, hoping it's only a coyote or raccoon causing my animals to worry. Slowly peering over the window I only see the blackness of the woods, my heart is still pounding and I'm almost too afraid to open the door- but as I strain to hear anything that might divulge the reason to my animals' behavior, I hear it and my heart almost stops. Laughter. Giggling. At first it's real faint, I can barely hear it, but it slowly grows ever so closer. The more I listen, the more it sounds like a small group of children, no. Boys. I am the oldest of five kids with most of us being boys and I've had my share of overseeing troop meetings and hangouts, and I would bet my last dollar that what I heard was a group of young boys giggling. But I don't hear movement. As I hear the giggles get ever so closer, there is no sound of twigs snapping, pine needles rustling, or limbs being pushed aside. This side of the creek is heavily forested, and thankfully Snow is not a very large horse else we would probably not have been able to navigate through. However right now there was no sound coming. Only the giggling. As I peered through the window, I could feel my own eyes wide with terror, I could just make out pairs of fireflies drifting at the edge of the woods, right before entering my little campground. This is January. Fireflies don't come out this time of year. I watch the not fireflies and note another oddness to them, they are all paired up. I watch them for several more seconds before another terrifieing realization, I'm not seeing fireflies. I'm seeing pairs of eyes. Tiny, beady, pairs hovering and floating along the tree line, with the tiniest giggles fluttering into my hears. I hear both Yakone and Snow move around nervously, with Yakone still making the smallest whines. I look down to the pistol in my hand and back to the dozen or so pairs of giggling eyes staring back to the cabin. I feel frozen and trapped. What can I do? Shot at the invisible, laughing boys? Jump on my horse and ride back? And even if I did decide to go full horse whisperer and jump on my horse with no saddle and no bridle, which way would I go? Do I rush through them? Whatever they are, and risk an hour ride in pitch darkness, or do I try to escape in the other direction. Hell, I'm not sure what all is that way. Most likely swamp. So I'm trapped, in a cabin no knows is here, I think to myself. I can feel the panic sinking in and my hands begin to loose feeling. Yakone, despite her own fear, comes up to me and begins licking my face and placing her paws on my chest (the things she is supposed to do during my episodes). As my brave SD is taking care of me, I see the gentle flash of her St. Francis of Asisi medalion on her collar, the patron saint of animals. I'm not Catholic, hell I'm even very religious, but I do have a small collection of Catholic saint medalions: Mary, St Christpher, St. George, and another St. Francis of Asisi. I started carrying them on trail rides at first because I saw no harm in possible spiritual protection, but now I needed those trinkets desperately. Once again I quietly crawled across the cabin floor and quickly looked through my saddle bag until I found the rosary with collection of saints added around the wooden cross at the end. The metal medalions made slight jingle as I picked them up, and again I thought my heart would stop in fear. However, as soon as jingling began, the giggling stopped. My ears strained to hear the tiniest noise as a desperately clung to the rosary, the beads digging into my palms. Before I could I let myself relax a new sound replaced the giggles: whispers. Soft, almost quite enough to go unnoticed. I tried to make out what they- again, whatever they were- could possible be whispering about. I tried to remember any prayers, Catholic or not, meant for protection or anything. But I could not think of any. This being said, I may not familiar with Catholicism, and I may not be very religious, but I have studied the shit outta the paranormal. My first question really, was to determine if this was paranormal, or not. Even if it was a group of boys out there I couldn't go blindly shooting into the darkness. I had very little evidence of either, truly. But at an unknown hour, with who knows how long till sunrise, I couldn't stay huddled in this cabin, cowarding all night. Finally, I stood up. Rosary in one hand, pistol in the other, and my 65 lb dog right behind I prayed to whoever would hear me and walked across the cabin and opened the door. The whispering stopped, the dozen or so pairs of drifting not-fireflies continued to blink at me from the pines. I thought I was going to die from hear failure my heart was beating so hard and so fast, my fingers had lost all feeling and my vision was beginning to swim around the edges. But I held firm, as much as I could. My stomach had turned to ice and for moment I feared I'd be sick in front of the giggling firefly boys. But I held that image in my mind, a group of young mischievous boys, just like my brothers, trying to scare me. With that new image I gave the woods my best "Big sister says eat shit and die" look that I could muster. I stood out there, in the cold January woods, glaring and praying. Finally, after what felt like hours, the not-fireflies slowly began to dissappear one pair at a time. But even after the last ones were gone I waited, scanning the woods for any sign of the tiny, yellow dots. Yakone pawed at my leg, again another sign for her take care of me, and I looked down at her. She gave a wide, doggy grin and wagged her tail. I looked in on Snow to find she was now munching on the very last of her hay. In far distance I could an owl, hooting in the night and crickets chirping. Yakone and I returned inside, I was suddenly exhausted. My eyelids almost too heavy to keep open. I set my pistol beside me and lay down on my bedroll, Yakone laying her head on my chest. I tried to listen for any signs of the giggling returning, but only the forest could be heard, and soon sleep overtook me. Honestly, I was surprised at how easily I fall asleep, but at least the rest of it went by smoothly. As soon as I was awake at daybreak that morning I decided to forgo breakfast, apologized to Snow and Yakone and promised them extra portions upon our safe return. Neither seemed to protest and we quickly booked it back to the farm. Honestly, as of right now, with this having just happened I don't know what to think, or how to feel. Was it all a dream? Hallucination? My imagination or was someone, or something really out there? I'm almost to afraid to search for any answers right now. I'm just my animals are safe.

;) #glocktober #glock #glock30 #45acp (Тир "Ибис") https://www.instagram.com/p/B3ElrLsoJn_/?igshid=1p14vso2zbscc
