I’m the girliest girl you are ever going to meet. I like unicorns. I love glitter. I love beauty. There’s so much beauty in the world. I’m always in love - if it’s not with a man, it’s something else. I really do think that the best thing is around the corner. Something wonderful is going to happen to me. Maybe tomorrow.
Gloria Vanderbilt on life at 90 (x)

[Gloria and Oona] both had wonderful minds, though utterly different. They both could have been anything, but more than making decisions about how they wanted their lives to go, their lives showed up. I think that is true of a whole generation of women.    Oona O'Neill was born with a broken heart. Knowing that, it was wonderful to make her laugh. When she laughed, she sounded like a very soft little bell ringing. Then, too, there was that marvelous bawdy side of her, which was funny and always accurate. In all the years of knowing each other we never once had an argument. I used to wonder why. I know, now, why. She could understand eight sides of every situation. She was two girls - the waif and the princess. Oona was brave. But she could not put an end to the deep mourning in which she lived until her death. Oona Chaplin died of a broken heart.   Gloria has made more choices than Oona or I. In a way, she has lived more. She has tried more. She has been interested in more. Gloria is very brave. She is even surviving the ultimate tragedy, the death of her son. She knows that while she cannot really survive it, she's healng that part of her that she can save for her other children. It is possible that she may lead a whole new life, be a whole different person, and start again. Oona could not do that. I don't know if I could. Gloria dares. We were really children when we met. We remained children. All those unlived years, those early years. We knew each other in the dark. We had an unbreakable tie: the desire and the need for the only thing we cared about — love. We gave that to each other. And now, one of us has died. The tie is still unbreakable. - CAROL MATTHAU, AMONG THE PORCUPINES

The custody dispute over the 10-year old heiress Gloria Vanderbilt fascinated Depression-era America in 1934. The girl's aunt, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, sued for custody, alleging that her mother neglected her, had lovers of both sexes, and spent Gloria's inheritance income on her own hedonistic lifestyle. Gloria Senior retaliated by claiming that Whitney kept nude sculptures in her house (she was a sculptor herself and later founded the Whitney Museum in New York).
"The Trial of the Century," as the tabloids called it, began on October 1 and lasted six weeks. Gloria's youngest son, Anderson Cooper, later described it as "the O.J. case of its day, except bigger, because nothing like it had ever happened before." On November 13, the women in the picture above demonstrated outside the courthouse to support Gloria's mother's claim to her child. (Gloria's father had died years before.) In the end, the judge awarded custody to Whitney but allowed Gloria Senior weekend visitation rights. The NY Journal American mocked the verdict:
Rockabye baby, up on a writ. Monday to Friday, Mother's unfit As the week ends she rises in virtue, Saturdays, Sundays, Mother won't hurt you.

Anderson Cooper is a prominent openly gay journalist on American TV. He came out as gay in an essay in 2012. He had been conflicted about protecting his own privacy and providing LGBT youth with a positive role model.
“It’s become clear to me that by remaining silent on certain aspects of my personal life for so long, I have given some the mistaken impression that I am trying to hide something—something that makes me uncomfortable, ashamed or even afraid,” he wrote. “This is distressing because it is simply not true...The fact is, I’m gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud.”
In 2022, Cooper shared an amusing story about when he first realized he was gay. At the age of 12, friends of his mother took him to go see “Bent”, a Broadway play starring Richard Gere. In the opening scene Gere and another actor were having sex under blankets. The other actor climbs out of the bed, naked, and got dressed. Cooper thought to himself:
“Oh my God, I’m gay…I’m totally gay.”

When the play was over, young Cooper went back stage to meet Gere (his theater companions knew the actor). Gere was shirtless and Cooper described the situation:
“And I had my Playbill and I wanted to get him to autograph it, but I was too—I just couldn’t stop staring at his chest. And so, fast forward to 10 years ago, I was interviewing Richard Gere and I took out the Playbill…and I told him the whole story and I had him sign it. Yeah. He was very tickled with it.”
Cooper had been in a long term relationship with Benjamin Maisani, a New York businessman. They broke up in 2018 but remained friends. In 2022 and again in 2023, Anderson Cooper had sons via surrogacy. Cooper co-parents the boys with Maisani who plans to adopt the boys as well.

Although Anderson Cooper being gay may be inspirational, I was more surprised when I found out he is the son of railroad heiress and fashion designer Gloria Vanderbilt. His net worth is estimated to be $200 million, partial due to his $12 million annual salary at CNN. And also from his inheritance from his mother’s estate when she passed away in 2019.
