Reconsidering what I explained in my last post here about RinHaru's relationship up to season 2, now i feel like I've seen most of the whole picture:

Rin is quite devoted to his relationship with Haru. I mean, their friendship and rivarly.

I noticed that Rin was the one to mostly make the moves, demostrate and say out loud his feelings for Haru (to the point that was kinda obvious and even Sousuke take note of that).

While, in the other hand, Haru...I feel like he's autistic or something.

Haha.

And I'm not saying this in a derogative meaning or with intentions of hurting anyone!! I'm hoping to not be that ignorant for using a term that does not apply here (correct me if that's the case)...but what I'm trying to say is that, actually, this treat of his character is just endearing: he doesn't speak that much, he's always straight-forward, silent and less expressive than others...this treat is one of the reasons why people like him so much, also something I like about him a lot, but to not lose the main topic: I think that's one of the reasons why I felt so one-sided his relationship with Rin.

I noticed that, after having to share much more time with Rin than the past time after their winning at final S1, especially in the movies, Haru was much more expressive both in speech and actions than before. And also, that makes sense!

S1 is him and Rin's conflict, mixed-up with the past-present and the construction of the clubs. This season was quite deppressing, in a way because of so much sour feelings in each character (mostly Rin and Haru) for their complications, so their 'happy side' was touched mostly at the end.

S2 they were focusing on their future and their own problems with the competitions and their respectives groups (alongside with Sousuke's story and Makoto's heavy participation). They were quite far from each other because their interactions were not a neccessity for the plot, and again, their 'happy side' and important interactions were handled mostly at the end.

S3 was heavely about Ikuya and Haru's story (that, at least, 7 episodes), and about their preparation to reach global levels. They were, still, a little much far from each other because their interactions, again, were not needed for the plot at that moment.

So, finally with the movies, the circumstances were the ones where they were going to interact with the other on one way or another. At the end, they were literally competing against each other, in the same group, against the same people (Albert, the other gringer/blond guy which I don't remember his name but was a hard swimmer also). They had quite a lot more meaningful interactions because they were together at the end of the day, participating in the same game...and while it was beautiful, I felt like finally I could see the reciprocity of Haru's feeling for Rin in terms of their relationship.

They were rivals after all, friends that worry for each other, that searched for the other when something bad happened, that supported, admired and inspired the other to be their best. And, something more beautiful, is that they wanted that. Both of them: To be together in that, racing to win. And they did, they won...and even after time passed and they met again in Bulgary...they kept swimming together.

I still feel that Rin is more vigorous when it comes to the relationship, but Haru's side is clearer now and I think I can say that, yes, this was a rivals to friends, meant to be, and they're both into it.

Thanks for reading this, which I consider to be one of the many internal disputes I have when watching two characters I like too much and I also ship them together.

you know, as much as I like the friendship between Rin and Sousuke, I'm really, really glad Sousuke wasn't around for S1.

I'm sorry but Rin was at his worst in S1 to the point where he seems like a totally different person than he actually is, and one would think "hey, but this is the perfect time for your best friend to be there and support you" and I would completely agree (I value friendships more than romance, after all) if only Sousuke had a different attitude than he has in S2. this attitude here? it wouldn't have done anyone any good in S1.

I know his actions come from good faith, I know, and I'm also the jealous and protective kind of best friend, I totally understand the intentions Sousuke had, and his way of reasoning (also considering that he didn't have the full picture of everything that was going on with Rin). at the end of the day, Sousuke wanted his best friend to fulfill his dreams...

but this? this? come-fucking-on.

imagine S1!Rin hearing that advice, just imagine. Rin needed the exact opposite of this shit.

this would have been the worst possible message they could give him at that time; Rin was already trying to convince himself that he needed to do everything alone in order to succeed and improve, he was already having a hard enough time isolated and depressed, he was already working hard to push everyone he loved away, and his anger issues were at their worst. he was a mess.

add his best friend putting these things into his head and Haru would've had less chance of getting Rin back. and without being able to help Rin improve his mental health, I think Sousuke would never have improved his either later.

so I'm really glad Sousuke showed up until the S1 issue was fixed. I'm very glad that he didn't interfere (although he had the opportunity), and I'm glad that his poisonous words didn't impact Rin at all; it shows how much Rin has improved mentally and how he has managed to get out of the depressing mindset where he was drowning alone for so long.

headcanon: rin's father, matsuoka toraichi, loved the band queen when he was alive, so rin grew up listening to a lot of queen, and eventually the band became his comfort band. he listens to their songs whenever he misses his father.

when rin finally makes it to the olympics and team japan medals in some of the races, they return to japan and celebrate. one of his teammates hosts a house party and they drink and play games and have fun, and one of the songs that blasts through the speakers during the party is queen's "we are the champions." rin is overcome with emotion and he HATES crying in front of other people, so he moves to the corner as the lyrics and we'll keep on fighting till the end plays.

haru, who is more perceptive than he lets on and knows that this song (or band) means a lot to rin because of his father, decides to take a chance and comfort him. he hugs him as he cries, and the medals around their necks clink as they begin swaying in a gentle, comforting slow dance.

his other teammates catch on and decide to comfort rin as he cries (and they all know, deep down, that all of this means a lot to rin because his dream started when he first decided he wanted to honour his father's sacrifices). his tears become happy tears when his teammates surround him in some sort of a huddle, singing to the chorus loud and proud, some of them reaching out to wipe rin's tears away or pat him on the back.

haru eventually steps aside to let rin bask in the moment, and at some point he whispers a quiet, "you did it rin." when rin looks at him questioningly, haru tells him, in that odd, somewhat metaphoric way of his (a manner of speaking that he learned from his late grandmother), that "your father's spirit forever lives in you" and rin breaks. but it's a good breakdown; the kind that is cathartic.

and rin finally fully accepts that all the pain he'd gone through in his journey to realising his dreams had been worth it. every second had been worth it. rin isn't a failure like he'd once believed he was; he's a champion.
