Random lengthy Gotham meta time.

There’s a gif set of Oswald visiting Jim and Barbara’s apartment doing the rounds.  It’s the little scene where Barbara tells Oswald that Jim never tells her anything, and that he never introduces her to any of his friends.

Looking at it made me think of one of my perceptions of Jim, which is that he’s not actually too great socially.  He’s not especially good at making friends, and probably doesn’t have a particularly wide circle of friends.  After we find out about Ed, and what he’s done, you’d expect absolute anger and contempt from Jim.  But that’s not what we get.  We get, instead, the same thing, rather plaintively repeated from Jim

I was your friend

I considered you a friend

Neither statement is thrown angrily at Ed.  He’s not bitter, or accusing.  The first sounds almost confused, resigned.  It takes place when they confront each other in the woods.  Ed is laughing about how easy it was to frame Jim, and Jim just replies, quietly, ‘I was your friend’.  Of course Jim would have trusted him, and wouldn’t have expected him to deliberately hurt him, because they were friends.

When Ed tells him this is just the truth of who he always was, Jim replies

I don’t believe that

And then, finally, in an attempt to somehow absolve Ed of his actions

You’re insane

Even Ed points out that the latter explanation is simply the one Jim finds easier to deal with.  The notion that Ed did this because he is unwell allows Jim to still keep hold of the idea that their friendship was sincere.

 The second is downright sad.  In the car, waiting for Kathryn to show up and take Ed to the Court of Owls, Jim talks about the night that they all had dinner together.  He says that Lee had to twist his arm (which ties in with what Barbara says about not getting to wear her fancy ‘night out’ clothes anymore: Jim is not the most social of guys) - but that he enjoyed the time they spent together.  And again, there’s that plaintive I considered you a friend.

With that last instance, there’s no reason to share this with Ed right now.  Jim is exactly where he needs to be in the context of his larger mission at this point.  He needs to keep the Court of Owls sweet in order to save the city.  The Court wants him to deliver Ed.  Ed is demanding to be delivered to them or he’ll continue to wreak havoc.  

Jim can solve both problems - but here he is, looking suspiciously red-eyed, trying to remind a man with a gun pointed at him that he once saw him as a friend.  What will that achieve? What would he have done if Ed had wavered?  If Ed had lowered his gun, and changed his mind?  Would Jim have turned the car round and got them both the hell out of there as fast as possible?  It would have put him in a very tricky position with the Court, but I honestly believe that Jim would have done it.  Despite everything that’s happened between them, all Jim is looking for here is an excuse not to hand Ed over.

This, in turn, made me think about the times where Ed just hasn’t been quite able to pull the trigger on Jim.

The first is when they confront one another in the woods.  After Barnes, Harvey and all the back-up has appeared, Ed has his gun pointed at Jim.

Now.  The game is up at this point.  Ed knows that he’s thoroughly caught.  There’s no real reason not to kill Jim right now - even if it’s only out of rage and frustration.  Ed is done, anyway.  

But he doesn’t.  He points the gun for a couple of seconds, he stares at him... and then there’s a strangled snarl of frustration as he drops it and runs.

We see him do exactly the same thing in The Primal Riddle, when he brings Aubrey James to GCPD.   At about 2m11s, Jim reaches into his pocket.  I glanced back at my recap to see if the same thing occurred to me at the time:

Ed aims his gun.  Jim reaches for his pocket.  Ed reverts for a moment to GoodEd in terms of flustered impotence – reduced to yelling

Don’t!

(An aside. And isn’t that interesting.  I think it’s unclear whether or not Ed doesn’t want Jim to go for his gun because it’s interfering with his image of how this would go; or because if he shoots Jim he risks losing the information he needs; or simply because – somewhere – there’s a part of Ed that doesn’t want to shoot Jim.)

I honestly think it’s the latter.  Yes - it bruises Ed’s ego when things don’t go to plan, but the plan’s already ruined at that point, because the detonator didn’t work.  What’s bothering him here is the prospect of Jim forcing his hand by going for his gun, because - in spite of everything - there’s still some part of Ed that sees Jim as a friend, and doesn’t want to shoot him.  He couldn’t bring himself to do it in the woods, and he can’t bring himself to do it here, either.

(It’s all much sillier in tone - but I think the same would go for season four, when Ed has Jim in his squishing machine.  If Ed really wants Jim gone at that point- he just shoots him.  If he insists on torture, then maybe choosing a more private location would have worked.  This is just begging to be caught and stopped before he crosses the point of no return)

I do like it, the idea that neither of them is entirely willing to relinquish their friendship.  I like even more that it’s partly down to the fact that neither of them does well with making friends, and so they’ll stubbornly cling to those they genuinely felt friendship for at one point.  They’ll merrily punch each other in the face whenever they meet, but they’ll be damned if they’ll shoot each other.

So.

Not to be a total fucking goof (this is a bad post) but I was just thinking about how game-changing Jim and Oz’s interaction in 418 is for their relationship.

Everyone talks about the sort-of parallel with Oswald clinging to Jim in Pax Penguina and meeting with Jim about Jerome ("If you’re not going to help me why are you even here?” “He scares the living crap out of me, okay?”) re: Oswald goes to Jim when he’s scared both in his right mind and when he’s totally out of it. (beautiful, i just shed a tear) In a general sense, gobblepot or no, you can still see how that suggests Oswald has established Jim as someone he can go to for protection, because of the kind of man he sees him as regardless of what they’ve been through.

I don’t really think that’s changed throughout the seasons. It’s nice that it’s reaffirmed as still existing in Oswald’s mind in season 4, but it’s nothing new. Oswald’s always seen Jim as “good”, whether when verbally stating it or in trying to corrupt him. I mean, nevermind all the tongue-tied looks of longing I’m going to wag my fist at rlt for some day (410, you bastard.) Oswald likes Jim in some manner (and I’d argue in a way that transcends his transgressions-- and it’s not special, it’s kind of the way Oswald is with Ed too, I’d wanna argue). The evidence is strong enough I think for anyone to accept that, no gobblepot goggles needed.

SO. I wanna talk about Jim.

So, 418. It’s the first interaction following Jim trying to let Oswald go free the same day he escaped from Arkham. And yeah, sure, he believes Oswald didn’t really kill Martin and that Martin is alive so the charge is empty. But we know two consistent things about Jim that have been true throughout all four seasons.

1. He doesn’t care about the law. He cares about ethics, and is lenient and choosey, accepts that they’re sometimes grey. Point being, ultimately he isn’t interested in pleasing anyone from a legal standpoint in an individual and specific situation when there’s ethics on the line. it’s about what’s right, not what’s legal or lawful by any standards. Pretty typical of a protagonist, but y’know, establishing his motivations and all that.

2. 4 episodes ago he was fixed on coming up with ANY legal reason to put Oswald away because, of course, he has personal knowledge of Oswald’s business practices being unethical– beyond just the licenses that made him cry in 4A. IE, while Jim is becoming less and less attached to the law, he knows he needs to fall within it to get things done in a way that maintains safety and civilization. Therefore, if he wanted to put Oswald away again, and given that Oswald is ethically naughty, and he, until 415, has continuously wanted to, he could. (Note, he also tells Oswald that if they give up Mr. Penn he’ll let him go, but I could make another post about context clues suggesting that was just an excuse. I’m on the fence about whether you’ll need to wear gobblepot goggles for that post as mine are actually sautered to my face.)

Obviously, Harvey goes to arrest Oswald anyway, because he’s still a fugitive and he can. In the interest of anti-gobblepotters who suck, you’ll note Jim goes along with it with very little fuss. Jim also sucks and we don’t like him.

So anyway, it isn’t about him personally knowing Martin isn’t dead. He likely believed Zsasz was lying about it originally, after all. So let’s assume 415 is a fluke, he feels bad for causing so much shit by dragging in Sofia. Oswald happens to fall into that pool of regret especially given he was the motivation for it. And perhaps his eagerness to destroy Oswald by just shoving another criminal likely to do similar nasty shit in his place (who wrote that garbage?) was self-serving and unwarranted. That’s the practical explanation.

418 comes along and Oswald’s here just strolling into the GCPD to meet with him. Despite the fact that the last time Oswald saw Jim, again, he got arrested by Harvey after being told by Jim he’d be let go. (This suggests to me that something has gone down between those two interactions, but, all speculation :-).)

There is no moment in which Jim even considers or mentions or threatens putting Oswald away again. (I know that’s a piss-pour reason for shipping something but what fandom do you think this is? This is Gotham we all live in the dumpster.) Instead of ‘well since you’re not even being helpful and you’re here i could just arrest you’ it’s ‘why did you come if you’re not going to help me?’

Something is extremely different-- from 4a specifically, but also from any other season. There is clear-cut development here in that I think both characters have seen the right pieces of one-another and been through the ups-and-downs that could very well and very practically lead to an actual good guy/bad guy alliance that, despite what we’d like, Oswald and Jim have canonically never actually had for more than one or two days.

All I’m saying is, post season 4 gobblepot is quite evidently and on both sides the strongest version gobblepot we’ve ever seen. It’s in its prime.

Question for Gobblepotters

I like both - to be honest. Canon divergence is good because a fix-it fic is always enjoyable. I think we define AU differently - for me, an AU is a completely different universe for all the characters - like coffee shop or something. Starting from scratch but still in the Gotham universe would still be canon divergence to me. If that makes sense?

Oh, no, I didn’t explain that properly. This AU would be in a different universe. I honestly don’t know why I felt I had to (fail to) explain what I meant by AU. -_- Sorry about the confusion. 

I think I meant to elaborate in that, Gotham would still be a city in this AU and the characters would be the characters (as in not OOC), but everything else would be different. I might not be making any sense.

I made a fresh post and plunked different gifs in since discussion under gifsets seems to be frowned upon in Tumblr.

Aren’t they fun films?  They have such an odd dynamic.  Herbert just seems to decide Dan is ‘his’ - like you say, he’s reluctant to share.  For his part, Dan seems to form a pretty fast bond, even though everyone around him is fairly mystified as to why he tolerates this odd little man.  The speed with which Herbert manages to almost usurp Meg in that relationship is startling.

Did you watch the extended Reanimator - with quality stuff like Herbert making Dan a sandwich :) ?
