I'm so glad I found this website again. This is a classic-style blog where this guy James shows us all sorts of wacky vintage stuff and riffs on it.
One of my favorite pages is the one about a 1970s hotel called The Gobbler: https://www.lileks.com/institute/motel/ Every interior designer needs to see it, it might traumatize them.
I also like the one about making fun of vintage grill advertisements.

At its peak, The Gobbler was a motel, supper club, and roadside attraction. Built in 1968, it sported futuristic Googie architecture and featured 49 rooms with different shaped waterbeds, round sunken bathtubs, and different colored shag carpet in each themed room.
The motel closed in 1992 and reopened as King Arthur's Inn Motel in 1995. After years of neglect, it became abandoned in 2001 and was used as fire practice for the local fire department. In 2019, an assisted living community was built on its spot. The restaurant was saved and turned into a theater. Located in Johnson Creek, Wisconsin. Source

I can't believe the USA went from this to this craven, money-making, greige, lazy, bland and stupidly stripped-down mode it's in now... even my hotel in Pejë, Kosovo has a revolving bar above the whole city that turns once an hour.
"It required two maids to make the motel’s round waterbeds, with the maids hanging by one arm and stretching out a stockinged foot to smooth away wrinkles. The rooms included 8-track players, round sunken bathtubs, king size waterbeds with built in televisions, passion pits, hot tubs and colored shag carpet that covered the walls in every themed room."

After destroying an asteroid headed for Earth, the chemical fallout causes all cold blooded animals to mutate into monsters. During the evacuation of Fairfield, Joel Dawson (Dylan O'Brien) is separated from his girlfriend Aimee (Jessica Henwick), but promises he'll find her. Seven years later, Joel has survived and is living in an underground bunker. Others in the colony fight monsters and scavenge supplies but Joel is left behind in the kitchen, as he freezes-up in dangerous situations. Joel makes radio contact with Aimee, learning of her colony and sharing stories of survival. When an ant-monster breaches his colony and another person is killed, Joel sets off on a quest to find Aimee.
Passing through the suburbs Joel is attacked by a giant toad, but is saved by a stray dog. The dog, called Boy, follows Joel on his journey, and warns him against poisonous berries and other dangers. Joel falls into a nest of worm-monsters, but Clyde Dutton (Michael Rooker) and Minnow (Ariana Greenblatt), rescue him from the "Sand-Gobblers" and scold him for his lack of survival skills. They are heading north, where the colder weather and elevation means less monsters. They teach Joel some basic survival skills. Clyde teaches Joel that not all monsters will attack, showing him a Boulder Snail and saying that "You can always tell in their eyes". After some further travel they invite Joel to go with them to the mountains but Joel insist he must find Aimee. As they part ways, Clyde gifts Joel with a grenade.
As Joel continue west, Boy becomes trapped by a giant centipede-monster. Joel freezes, but eventually shoots the monster with his crossbow and saves Boy. They shelter in an abandoned motel, and meet a robot named Mav1s (Melanie Zanetti). Mav1s is able to show Joel photos of his parents, and power his radio long enough to contact Aimee. He learns that she is close, and that new survivors have reached their colony and promised to lead them away to safety, but Joel loses contact. As Mav1s plays music and watches the luminous sky jellies float by, her battery finally dies. In the morning Joel and Boy are attacked by a Queen Sand-Gobbler. They hide but Boy makes noise, giving away their position. Joel kills the Queen with the grenade, but yells at Boy for putting them in danger, and Boy runs away. After swimming across the river Joel is covered in leeches, which poison him and cause hallucinations, but he is rescued before he passes out.
Joel wakes up in Aimee's colony, where she is the leader and most of the colonists are elderly and dependent on her. Joel is introduced to the new survivors, Cap (Dan Ewing) and his crew. Cap has offered to take the colony to safety on their yacht. Everyone is packing up and having a farewell party. Aimee is glad to see Joel but not ready to restart their relationship. Joel decides to return to his colony and contacts them on the radio, they are pleased he has survived, but the colony has become unsafe and they will have to leave soon. Cap sends Joel some berries, which he recognizes as poisonous. Realizing Cap was lying to them, he rushes to warn Aimee, but everyone is already intoxicated and then he is knocked unconscious. They all awaken tied-up on the beach. Cap reveals his group is not there to help but to steal supplies. Their yacht is not powered by fossil fuel, but towed by a crab-monster that Cap controls with an electrified chain. Cap sets the crab to feed on the colonists. Joel and Aimee get loose and fight for their lives, Boy returns during battle, and Cap and his crew escape to their yacht. Cap electrocutes the crab to provoke it to attack. Joel has the opportunity to kill the crab, but looks into its eyes, and instead shoots the electrified chain, freeing the crab from Cap's control. The crab leaves Joel unharmed and instead kills Cap and his team and sinks the yacht.
Joel decides to head back to his colony, and recommends Aimee and her colony head north to the safer colony in the mountains. They share a goodbye kiss, reigniting Aimee's love for Joel, and she tells him she'll find him. Joel treks all the way back to find his original colony and his friends are still alive. Clyde teaches Joel that not all monsters will attack, showing him a Boulder Snail and saying that "You can always tell in their eyes". After some further travel they invite Joel to go with them to the mountains but Joel insist he must find Aimee. As they part ways, Clyde gifts Joel with a grenade.
As Joel continue west, Boy becomes trapped by a giant centipede-monster. Joel freezes, but eventually shoots the monster with his crossbow and saves Boy. They shelter in an abandoned motel, and meet a robot named Mav1s (Melanie Zanetti). Mav1s is able to show Joel photos of his parents, and power his radio long enough to contact Aimee. He learns that she is close, and that new survivors have reached their colony and promised to lead them away to safety, but Joel loses contact. As Mav1s plays music and watches the luminous sky jellies float by, her battery finally dies. In the morning Joel and Boy are attacked by a Queen Sand-Gobbler. They hide but Boy makes noise, giving away their position. Joel kills the Queen with the grenade, but yells at Boy for putting them in danger, and Boy runs away. After swimming across the river Joel is covered in leeches, which poison him and cause hallucinations, but he is rescued before he passes out.
Joel wakes up in Aimee's colony, where she is the leader and most of the colonists are elderly and dependent on her. Joel is introduced to the new survivors, Cap (Dan Ewing) and his crew. Cap has offered to take the colony to safety on their yacht. Everyone is packing up and having a farewell party. Aimee is glad to see Joel but not ready to restart their relationship. Joel decides to return to his colony and contacts them on the radio, they are pleased he has survived, but the colony has become unsafe and they will have to leave soon. Cap sends Joel some berries, which he recognizes as poisonous. Realizing Cap was lying to them, he rushes to warn Aimee, but everyone is already intoxicated and then he is knocked unconscious. They all awaken tied-up on the beach. Cap reveals his group is not there to help but to steal supplies. Their yacht is not powered by fossil fuel, but towed by a crab-monster that Cap controls with an electrified chain. Cap sets the crab to feed on the colonists. Joel and Aimee get loose and fight for their lives, Boy returns during battle, and Cap and his crew escape to their yacht. Cap electrocutes the crab to provoke it to attack. Joel has the opportunity to kill the crab, but looks into its eyes, and instead shoots the electrified chain, freeing the crab from Cap's control. The crab leaves Joel unharmed and instead kills Cap and his team and sinks the yacht.
Joel decides to head back to his colony, and recommends Aimee and her colony head north to the safer colony in the mountains. Do Dogs...?
When dogs whimper have they
Lost temporary hope?
Do they feel distraught in
Incomprehensible emotions,
That which only a Creator or
Owner of will can fathom?
When dogs run away, are they
Purposefully searching for a new
Hobby to ignite that now passive
Conscious stream of motivation?
Do dogs relate to time equivalently
To seniors? Do dogs mature in
Cooperation to their increasing
Stature? Does a twenty four hour
Cycle dramatize to a years length
Due to how briefly they progress
Through meditative, involuntary
Phases? When pups first conceive
To reality, do they develop stranger
Anxiety? Do they imprint to a
Physical fabrication, such as a twig,
Or the perfect, snuggly blanket in a way
That keeps them bound to it for the
Upcoming stages of childhood?
Cognitively, do dogs incorporate
A language that only they themselves
Can encode with relative members
Of that nation? Do dogs consider staple
Surroundings such as a local playground
Or a parking lot to a vacant motel a
Point on interest, like how groups of
Jolly people waver to national monuments?
Do dogs instinctively wish to reprimand
And correct common law? Do dogs have
Qualifying standards? Dogs surely have
Differing opinions on the correct mushy
Patch of leaves, the proper hued fire
Hydrant and when in composition with the
Frame of a weekday or weekend, make for the
Most impromptu, exhaustive gaseous release.
When dogs enter their primary teen years,
Do they mesmerize over the picturesque
Cover poodles on tabloids and journal entries?
Are the occasional worms the understatement
For the ravaging hive-minds of zits that
Cover the scalps and chests of prepubescent
Boys going on men? As how flies do
Scuffle to pus scabs, or a decomposing, abandoned
Body part.
When dogs pass on to never ending teapots
Of savory fondue and cushions that make
Memory foam look morbid, does their life
Play like a picture book, or a stop motion animation,
Like graduations or marriages share galleries
Recorded over desktop LCD screens.
Do dogs ever forget, and try to reconcile
Through habitual methods to recover that once
Encoded memory? How one forgets their keys and intends
On checking both the pantry, fridge, and underneath
The couch.
Do dogs comprehend sinful nature,
And do they repent in forgiveness? When tots curse,
Say the Lord’s name in shame, by imitating
What the media chews up and pours down their
Impressionable gobblers, like a mother bird.
Do dogs ever feel underwhelmed?
Do some days feel overrated, a motor task
As tying your shoes, but the
Lack of belly rubs make as if
You forgot double knotting and eating
Pavement with knocked out canines?
When dogs nuzzle you, do they pixelate
This present polaroid snap-shot moment
As an inner dialogue that sighs in relief
And exasperates stating,
Wow, this really is how I am going to spend
My final documented history. You, me, this bed.
Let’s stay like this until the smiling Star explodes.
I could lie with you for trillions, eternity.
You flicker away the bedroom lamp and give
It one final kiss on the forehead.
You’re my best friend, my prized possession,
My everything.

Want to see what 30 million pieces of plastic on a beach looks like? Visit this island.

Henderson Island should be the remote island paradise of your dreams. Instead, it looks like this:
It wasn't the locals (the island is uninhabited) or any bullheaded tourists who left the rubbish there. Henderson Island sits the middle of the South Pacific, more than 3,000 miles away from Australia, New Zealand, and South America.
It's so far removed that when researcher Jennifer Lavers went there in 2015, it took two planes and convincing a passing freight ship to make a detour, The Atlantic reported.
It's not exactly a spring break trip to Cabo.
And yet the island is home to millions of pieces of trash. An estimated 37.7 million, to be specific. Most of it is plastic, a vast collection of little green army men, red Monopoly motels, cigarette lighters, and discarded toothbrushes.
So who the hell put all that plastic there?
The answer is all of us. We all did.

Henderson Island sits near the middle of the South Pacific ocean gyre, which is a gigantic circle of ocean currents that pick up trash from all across the ocean. Henderson's just an unfortunate obstacle in the way.
“What’s happened on Henderson Island shows there’s no escaping plastic pollution even in the most distant parts of our oceans," Lavers said in a press release.
"Henderson Island is a shocking but typical example of how plastic debris is affecting the environment on a global scale," Lavers said. She and a team of six other people stayed on Henderson for three and a half months to document the pollution. They published their findings this month in a new scientific paper.
This is one island, but it shows how bad the problem is. A 2015 study estimated we could be dumping more than 10 billion pounds of plastic into the ocean each year. Plastic pollution can harm or even kill sea life and can affect human health.
If we don't change something, every beach in the world could eventually look like Henderson Island.

We shouldn't lose hope. Whether it's gigantic plastic-collecting pontoons, solar-powered trash-gobblers, beach cleanups, or getting fishermen to nab old, floating nets out of the water, there are ways we can still try to fix this.
Of course, maybe the place to start is to be smarter about how we use plastic in the first place (Lavers herself was so appalled that she's switched to a bamboo iPhone case and toothbrush, the AP reported).
But we need to be aware of what's at stake. Because if this can happen to a deserted island, it can happen at home too.

At its peak, The Gobbler was a motel, supper club, and roadside attraction. Built in 1968, it sported futuristic Googie architecture and featured 49 rooms.
The motel closed in 1992 and reopened as King Arthur's Inn Motel in 1995. Unfortunately, after years of neglect, it became abandoned in 2001 and was used as fire practice for the local fire department. In 2019, an assisted living community was built on its spot.
