Hello hello! I saw your designs for Dores and Custodio via Kat's renditions, and I really like the way you've designed them. It suits their occupations and what little we know of them. Dores seems tough as nails while Custodio exudes a high-strung energy. I am interested in how you came up with their designs, if you are open to sharing

Helloooo! Thank you for the compliments on the designs, I am really proud of how they come out all things considered! They were so good even Kat couldn't help but accept them as her headcanons ahahah.

The fun about these designs is that they just kinda came to me in the middle of a Summer day. I got a pencil out and started doodling the rough sketches for their face. And I settled on the first attempt! I was really impressed with how quickly I seemed to grasp their concept at least. Dores gave me this idea of mysterious unhinged person, with their mask being the scalp of a Pthumerian face. I really tried to lean into the angle of someone who really doesn't care about scars or burn marks, and perhaps even enjoys them a little. Custodio I imagined to be slightly kinder-looking compared to Dores or even Willem and Gehrman, but mostly to make him look out of place with all these other important figures. Though looks can be deceiving since this guy accompanied Willem and Dores in the dungeons himself. He must have had a bit of fight in him too. His more high-strung side came from his almost-stuttering and broken speech pattern in the game. Poor guy must have seen a lot of things he most likely wasn't ready for, unlike Willem and even Dores to a lesser extent.

At the time I did not know Dores could have been a woman, but we found out the design could easily be changed into one with just a slight fix to the eyes. I can say that the design was great if you can easily salvage basically most of it! @katyahina has been a big help in finalizing the designs, and it's what I also use as a reference nowadays.

As you can see, the initial ideas were all there, they just got better with time! And now I can't help but love these very obscure and underrated goobers. I think they were good friends despite how different they were. (and how much Dores loved to annoy the heck out of poor gatekeeper Custodio ahah)

Since you said it's ok to send you random ask, i've always found your "monsters" design to be really really gorgeous, and I wanted to know : in any form of media you've interacted with, what's PEAK monster design for you ?

i have been thinking about this ask alot bc ... i dont ... know? theres a problem with what counts as a monster really too, most are either some sort of anthro/furry or the horror gore type of monster that instills you more with disgust than awe

i guess theres some i really like but idk if thats what id call 'peak' (though its rarely JUST the design but their vibe and stuff too);

Eldra, Farodra and Naydra (engl Dinraal, Farosh(?)) though Eldra is def my fav one of them, i like how they are a little more less typical dragon- with the fur around the neck the floppy ears and kinda goofy face yet manage to be the most ethereal, awe inspiring creature i have ever seen in a game with how they act and are presented as (in BOTW!!! do not mention anythign sonau/zonai with stupid magic pebbles to me about them i will manifest worms into your tea)

Leunen (Lynels) (botw) -i could not find a better picture wtf, fav are white and silver ones) FINE they had some pretty neat new horn designs in totk- idk i just like them alot, rather simple if you think about it, horse lion plus horns- but its so well put together it just kinda scratches my brain in a good way (also how intelligent they clearly are, like the way they fight and act and also even their death animation is so??? huh?? you are just gonna treat them like any other mindless monste- *remmbers they treat ganondorf even even worse all things considered* .. nevermind you're good)

'Beast' Ganondorf (twilight princess) its my favorite beast ganon design (even if it technically is just kinda a man boar .. again) though if ww gan had a non puppet beast form that one would most definitely be my fav lol (i will not get over the fact that some descriptions call this a hideous beast EXCUSE ME???? WHERE???) (honorable mention here, darkbest ganon from botw, pig on fire but it looks cool as fuck)

the pathless bosses- (here in order, Cernos, the Godslayer, and Kumo) all of them are rad as hell (except for the final version of the godslayer ... liek im sorry but it looks to boring compared to any other one lol) again not just the design but man do i love them

since i dont know what would count as a monster or no i could just list my fav characters here bfmjbfmjsbmj like radahn (elden ring) is just kinda a zombie, aurelion sol (league of legends) is a space dragon, the forest god in princess mononoke, Narisha (skyward sword- sky whale)- i could go on but this post is long already (honorable mention to Omus in nausicäa, weird bugs but also something divine, though it is much more how they are treated and the vibe etc)

in all honesty though i cant think of one that i would describe as perfect, what i want of a monster design is to be ... cool but also a little weird, big hulking monsters that have something off about them and something that makes them 'other', but also not, as much as i like bloodborne, just bloody gory messes of rotting flesh, AND not just as a monster to kill, i just crave a game or otherwiese piece of media where the cool monsters arent just there for you to kill- the perfect one i guess would be something kinda big scary weird and off but while non verbal clearly not a mindless beast?

and here is the thing; my own characters do not furfill that, my designs are really rather conservative, much to my dismay, anthro of a mix of animals, maybe an extra arm thrown in- Eadrya, one of my favorites, is really just a blueish furry (yes they have fur) and their demon form is a mix of seals and catfish with some extra arms, too many teeth and a mouth that goas wayy to far (if they want) - Shargon is a feather dude with extra arms and his demon form is really just a chinese type dragon crossed with a bird, throw some darts at the color wheel, done

together with my problem of my monster characters losing their 'otherness' vibe within the story rather fast bc the majority of my characters are non human and speak and you see them in all sorts of emotions and parts of life- they lose that divine, unknown vibe and i HATE that that happens, i want them more akin to the forest god in mononoke but thats not possible unless i start from scratch

and i really dont mean to make myself look bad to sound self depre- ... however you spell that; i really am rather dissatisfied with my own designs but mostly just roll with what i got bc i never seem to be able to actually achieve what i want

even my redesigns often really make things LESS interesting (unless maybe the og was just ... human, but they are blue eyed with golden hair and white so that makes them divine you seE-), the skyward sword dragons as i redesigned them made them much more classical dragon, in part intentional bc i was drawing a connection of them becoming the botw dragons at some point, but by all means the canon design is much more weird and unusual than what i did with them, you could apply the same to even demise, his canon design might seem a little uninspired but really what did i do? inject him with some classic satan spice like that makes it in any way less stereotypical evil demon ??? lol

im sorry this post devolved into whatever this is but i really am trying to answer sincerely, i am confused about it myself, what counts as a monster, what doesnt, there must be more that i really loved but why cant i think of them, why do i design characters like this when i really want something much more different, i dont know, i feel like my brain is in a cage, why do i keep making things less interesting in an effort to make it interesting, am i falling into the corporate trap of cool sells who am i what am i doing

(theres a zelda artist with a style so strikingly genuis in shape, color and just .. Moonchild-in-blue: The blues and purples!! Opals and the insides of muscle shells inspired me a lot with the coloring (particularly the stars and moon). There’s another shell that has that shiny blue and green lining on the inside but I can’t remember the name of it. It was a full moon last night but I forgot to take a picture! Thought of you but anyways I loved coloring the lady. It was fun but I first I struggled on deciding if I wanted more blue or purple.

A-s-levynn: More Dark Sun Gwyndolin inspiration… (you can tell I have my dark souls art books open next to me right now). As requested, tendrils/tentacles were added! I think it improved the design a whole lot because it was originally very symmetrical and the tentacles added just the right amount of asymmetry to balance out the overall look. I’m a huge fromsoft fan (playing Elden Ring, waiting for new DLC, have dark souls 1 remastered but haven’t started it yet, have bloodborne Elden ring and DS1/3 art books) so lots of my art has elements from Fromsoft games (neutron activation).

a while ago there was a blodoborne lore guy who i was like "ugh! this guy doesnt know what hes talking about!" over some statues he argued were depicting people looking up at an unknown astrological event but now i think he is kinda right. after watching the shetani's lair video, which argues pretty convincingly that a meteor severed the "divine realm" from the rest of the world of sekiro.

like, first of all: fromsoft loves to repeat itself. if something has appeared once in a game, its probably appeared prior or will appear again. they love to iterate on a theme over there. they also love to lightly reference japanese cultural knowledge that is lost on my dumb ass. but prior to this, the importance of an external, extraterrestrial force flying in and suddenly up-heaving the balance of the known world had not occurred to me.

in bloodborne, this is explicitly referenced but in the classic fromsoft "saying without REALLY saying it" way: the burial blade and the blade of mercy were forged from meteoric iron. oh my fucking god are you kidding me right now. sorry i just did a google search and realized something else lol. fuck hold on. look i can't find like a plain english wiki page about forging swords with meteoric iron in japan so youll have to take it from this nasa abstract. it was an uncommon practice due to scarcity and i think the swords kind of suck lol. however, the thing about iron from space is that its magnetic, which is how the first "trick weapons" operated: the blade of mercy is two blades magnetized together and the burial blade is just a magnet that flicks loose.

dude what in the hell. i have learned so much useless shit from this game. okay: japan wasnt the only nation to forge with iron meteorites; the indian (esoteric buddhism/shugendo/vajrayana buddism is also a recurring theme, for real) kris is famous not only for it's uncommon snake-y shape (....snakes are also a recurring theme) but the patterning of the metal, called pamor. this unique pattern is achieved by use of meteoric iron during the forging process.

now look at the weapons used by the ancient race of pthumerians

🌕Hunter's Moon🌕 - Bloodborne/Ghost the band AU

You were a hunter, but now you have turned into a beast. What do the different Papas do after they see you turn?

Angst! Lots of angst! Also spoilers for the game Bloodborne. If you have not played it and you like Ghost, I highly recommend it. GN reader!

Enjoy!

Once a hunter, always a hunter. The sickness in your blood had become unbearable and from there… there was no going back. No matter how much he tried to help you, how many remedies he discovered, how much he pleaded you to rest… it was never enough. You felt yourself getting lost to the blood, to the powers beyond. The mortal life that was once your own ceased to exist. Your mind was not your own, your limbs expanded in size and covered in fur. Teeth sharpening and growing like icicles, bright and cold. And your screams so vile and loud that they drowned every other scream occurring during the night of the hunt.

🥀Nihil:

It pains his soul to see you like that, but he promised that he would always protect you. However, at the most crucial moment, he could not fulfill his promise and that is what pains him the most.

He stays by your side, even if you don’t know it…even if you don’t know him. He guards the place that you have made yours: an old chapel, now abandoned.

He threats and kills anyone who dares to try to kill you. He turns the church into a sacred temple devoted to you, the best hunter he ever knew and the love of his live, now turned into a martyr.

🔪Primo:

He simply kills you, his heart breaking entirely once you exhale for the last time, turning then into dust.

You leave behind a necklace that he had given you a long time ago. Words of adoration to you once spoken have lost any meaning to him.

He is so pained and so devastated that he turns himself completely into a vengeful soul, trying to kill the God who had made this to you. However, in the process he becomes a beast himself, lost in his memories of you.

In his mind there is no blood, no hunt, no suffering, only you.

📚Secondo:

With his reputation as a scholar he tries everything he can to save you. He tries to find a cure through both blood and insight.

He thinks everything is lost, you are succumbing to the blood, loosing yourself more and more, day after day and he cannot do anything.

He decides to create a nightmare of his own. He traps you outside and goes into a deep slumber. Rom the Vacuous Spider grants his wish and now you are forever inside a dream with him. At least that is what Secondo thinks.

Part of your consciousness is with Secondo, the rest of you is outside, suffering and turning. Breaking bones and skin, transforming into the beast he so desperately tried to confine.

When you are free of your prison, you leave him be. Your same smell emanates from him, so still and pale, but you know you are with him in some kind of way.

Nonetheless, you cannot do anything. The nightmare will be eternal and he will die within his fantasy.

🩸Terzo:

Leaves you be as a beast, but visits often the place you roam.

He tried so many times to kill you, but there was no use. There is so much pain inside of him because of it, so much regret. He does not know if he can keep living without you, but he cannot live with the guilt either.

He feels like it is his fault. If he had a better hunter maybe you wouldn’t have needed to help him. Maybe if he was better he could have protected you, have a normal life with you.

His heart breaks bit by bit every time he sees you in that state. Inside he hopes that a hunter has the gut to do what he hasn’t been able to do.

In the end, after inebriating himself with too much blood he battles you. The final blow is fatal for both of you.

He holds your monstrous hand and smiles, feeling your fading heat. Your heartbeat stopping at the same time as his own and now you are both at peace.

🌕Copia:

He becomes obsessed with bringing you back to normal. Right after you turned he spent weeks crying, shouting, drinking and blaming the gods.

You didn’t deserve it. You were meant for a world that deserved you. You were his love, the only one that brought him happiness in all this darkness and blood.

He makes a lot of research. He needs to find something to reverse your transformation, and he finds something, something vague, but something nonetheless.

A note saying ‘three third cords’ lies in the table of a once prestigious lecture building. Something in him knows that that is the way.

He searches, lies and kills until he has three thirds of umbilical cords that come from women about to ascend to godhood. He does not hesitate to consume them to save you. He will turn himself into God if it needs to.

The Moon Presence awaits for the new hunter that will continue the nightmare, but Copia has other plans. He only has you in his mind when he kills the old God. You are the only thing he sees when he becomes a Great One.

He resets everything and you are back as a human. The hunt is over and you do not remember him.

He becomes your invisible guardian. You have the blessing of the most powerful god, and you pray for his favor, which he gives to you freely.

He graces you every day, with the flowers of your garden always blooming, your tea always as you like it, the birds always chirping when you take a stroll through the cemetery. But sometimes it rains, because Copia remembers. He wants to live those things beside you. Hold your hand when you are cold and hug you when you are sad. There is an unknown weight in your chest that hurts you so much, but you don’t know its origin.

He looks at you from the skies, trying to make your human existence the best possible. Nonetheless, he knows one day you will perish, so he starts preparing to change that. He will make you the greatest God that ever existed.

I am for real obsessed with the Plants from trigun. Not plant as in a flower but as in a powerplant but also yes as in a flower. A discovery so profound it saved the human race but decades, centuries down the line they still don't understand exactly what it is they made(discovered??)

Those scientists did what the alchemists of old where trying to do and put God in a bottle and it turned out it loves them so so much. But we can't stop killing God and sucking the marrow from its bone, even though it loves us, especially because it loves us. And maybe destruction is the only way we know how to love.

To quote a fitting piece of dialogue from the Doll in bloodborne

"Hunters have told me about the Church, about the Gods and their love. But, do the Gods love their creations. I am a doll created by you humans, would you ever think to love me? Of course, I do love you, isn't that how you've made me? "

And God so loved the world he gave his one and only son, ect ect.

Humanity made something it couldn't understand, and in an effort to be understood this thing put its children in humanities hands and went "love us please, love us like we love you. Can you see us, hear us, feel us? See we'll walk next to you, we'll stay by your side and forgive you even if you kill us."

Genres I write in: horror, mystery, dark fantasy inspired by world mythologies, dark comedy, my wips might have a touch of detective stories to them, too^^

Tropes I use(d): found family, animal companion, rivals to best friends, rivals to friends to lovers (used only once as I don't like romance that much, why it appears in my wips is a looong story), orphaned MC

POV: 3rd person, multiple POVs with main focus on 1 to 3 characters max

I tend to write in quite a flowery language and in poetic prose, but since English isn't my first language it can come across slightly awkward (TL; DR I do plenty of updates and edits to my posted stuff)

My wips are inspired and sometimes directly refer to a certain mythology, such as Slavic (this one is also most widely used as I like to read local legends of Serbia, Russia, the Czech and Slovak Republic, Ukraine, Poland and so on), Chinese, Nordic, Japanese and Indonesian. HOWEVER I love to create my own mythos and so the world is a blend of characters directly based of a mythological figure exploring environement both familiar and completely new to them. (I've always been intruiged by a question what would happen if world mythologies bumped into each other and what would be the consequences of it.)

My own mythos are pretty much eldritch-like oriented with a significant touch of folk horror. I'm not going to lie, I'm a FromSoftware fanboi, I see Bloodborn or Kuon, I'm going feral and so is my inspiration.

There are many occuring themes about substance abuse, addiction, health issues, gore, extreme violence, sexual assault/rape and other strongly 18+ stuff, so I'd appreciate if only 20+ y.o. people (or be at least 18, really) follow this account. In other words - PLENTY OF NSFW THAT'S NOT DIRECTED AND INTENDED FOR MINORS.

WIPs

Not all from my wips have a proper introduction (a.k.a. there's no link for their Tumblr WIP intro). BUT I do plan on doing them, so expect the links to be updated. These are just quick summaries of them.

The Flight of the Western Crane - A dark retelling of Journey to the West where Sun Wukong tries to protect the young Buddhist monk Tang Sanzang while meeting a duo of a stranded Princess of the Great Tiger Kingdom and her foreign advisor Lady Wolf Witch. Their common journey starts out as an innocent one. However, it soon evolves into a dangerous chase where the Monkey King must face the worst of his opponents.

City of False Gods - Hybrid of wuxia, mystery and film noir genres set on a fabricated island near Hong Kong. The fiction evolves around the Monkey King who's, after his yet another imprisonment, woken up to a strange world of 1920s where his powers are under a radar by the local supernatural cop unit and is forced to live among the poorest while trying to solve strange happenings in the city. City of False Gods also serves as a sequel to The Flight of the Western Crane.

Empire of Dust - Historical dark fantasy with horror elements set in 330 Constantinople. The story follows two little sisters one of whom is considered neither dead nor alive. One day, Ulfrika sets out for a strange task in order to provide for her dear little sister. Her pure-hearted intention, though, may lead her down the rabbit hole which may devour her sanity.

Ratpeople - An outline idea for a standalone story involving Ulfrika and her time in the Wild West, where the soulless hybrid discovers an eerie town in the desert while chasing after a man who stole one of her horses. The story is related to weird western (mostly its horror and fantasy elements and no sci-fi stuff) and mystery genres and also mythology related things.

Boy Who Chased a Dragon - Another outline story outside the universe of The Legends of No-man's Land. The story takes place on an island of eternal summer and flower bloom, where mythical creatures live peacefully. One day, Dado* loses his pet dragon, a creature his sister gave him for his 8th birthday, in a harsh storm. Now, he sets out for a long journey to retrieve his best friend from the claws of the cruel Ember King.

*because this is still in a process of an outline/1st draft, I'm still not sure about the name, it's only a working name for the protagonist
