So I feel like talking about point of light again because why not its my job

So Im going to actually truthfully talk about what I loved liked and hated.... because yeah there's a part at the end that has me a bit... frustrated to say the least..

Im going to talk under a keep reading to avoid spoiling to those (few) of you who care.

The Ugly

So first off why why why would they throw him on a shield world to be by himself again?? Umm hello? 100,000 years alone on a ring was real great for Spark's mental health... why would they do this to him again? Oh right the librarian...he's got to follow whatever bullshit she puts him though..

I knew something was up the entire book, I thought they were going to kill him in some way... but this is almost as bad?

Why would they separate him from his found family? Its too soon he needs more adventures with them.

I think its funny that his excuse is "oh I don't want to watch you all die" 1. they aren't dying anytime soon and 2. Isn't worse to not spend as much time with your friends since you know they will eventually die??

HE DIDN'T GET TO SAY GOODBYE TO THE KIDS OR HIS KID (LITTLE BIT) OR RAM

I need more Little Bit and Spark time. Watching him take care of a babey ai like that... just ughh.. so cute...

Dont get me wrong.....the Chakas-appears-and-smirks-at-Rion part legit had me start crying. It completely disarmed me... But still him being alone again has me worried.

The Bad

And that brings me to my next point.... was hoping to see him on infinite but I doubt we will of hes on Bastion... I get that nobody really follows his story and halo 4 had a bunch of people mad about books relevance to the game but IDGAF stop listening to the illiterate gamers

(Im still hoping he will be in terminals as Spark and Chakas... I know this is very unlikely but Id literally cry if this happened)

Also the way librarian did a geas to Rion to talk to her about precursors... that was weirdly presented. Id be mad at her if I was Rion.

The Good

Ive talked about all the good before in multiple posts but Im just going to go through whatever comes to mind

This book goes so well if you have forerunner trilogy fresh in your mind. Its mindblowing seeing them connect everything

Bringing back the precursors yes...

Him going back to installation 07 was horrible great. That was very traumatizing to have him relive his death again... thats just...idk why I put this under good but (also him using water metaphor to deal with trauma is amazing 💕)

Spark "as was before" spot or whatever the heck he called it where he pretended to be Chakas in Africa looking at like a grass strand.... its so adorable way of him keeping in touch where who he was/is

Spark and Little Bit... so precious. Spark taking care of Little Bit was amazing 💕

Spark and Rion's bromance (or whatever the equivalent word to doing really close stuff without it being romantic) they really supported each other through tough times and grew very close!!

Spark doing that thing where he goes from calm blue to red attack mode... in my head I can just picture it and its great (please terminals in infinite)

Veridity... she better be in Infinite.

Theres definitely more but nobody is really going to read this so might as well stop lol

Im forever going to be as salty as the gods piss about that ending but the good outweighs the bad.

9/10 is a fair rating for the book lol and those -1 happened right at the ending....Renegades gets the full 11/10

2021 Favorite Books Part I

Hey All!

It's the end of the year so, I'm going to talk about my book stuff I've one this year

12 Favorites of the year(That I read in 2021!)*Not in any particular order*

1.The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer

I loved this book a lot. It felt like a really cool scifi thriller. It had me guessing.

2. Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

I just finished this so I might change my mind as 2022 goes off, but thats okay! There was such a strong Found Family aspect and all the characters dynamics were wonderful!

3. Unravel the Dusk by Elizabeth Lim

God, I love Lim's storytelling. It's beautiful and this was a great end to her duology. This book felt a lot different than the first book, but it worked well in this case. The atmosphere needed to be different and it felt great with the story! I wasn't even mad at one of my hated tropes near the end.

4.The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson

I really loved WOA, way more than the other two which is weird b/c a lot of folks ive seen say this is the worst and suffers middle book syndrome. The politics of the world is explained and after finishing HOA a lot of things make sense. Sanderson is a master of tieing things together in the end. I loved Mistborn, i'm just sorry it took me so much convincing to start it.

5. The Burning God by R.F. Kuang

I love Kuang's storytelling and all of the books in this trilogy for different reasons. But the descent of Rin's sanity and her brutality in this book is insane. She is a character that has made so many stupid mistakes and it doesn't even make me mad, because Rin has done this constantly, and constantly it is her downfall. I loved all these characters and the show of what colonialism is doing. This work is amazingly dark and That is one reason why I'm hesitant to recommend it to others, but I really love it.

6. The First Sister by Linden A. Lewis

I loved this SFF book so much. It had a lot of great queer representation and I loved the characters and the end reveal! Linden's writing was so beautiful as well!! It was so fantastic! I liked this because I've been super hesitant to go into the Sci-fi genre, and reading this made me think I'm missing out on some great things.

7. The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas

I know this book is talked about a lot, but the time I read this I was reading it while working at Brooklyn Center, MN and a day or so ago daunte wright got shot by an officer. Police Brutality is always a hot topic and Thomas saves no one with this book. She's realistic. The characters felt incredibly real and I was sobbing at multiple parts. I read this in one day and I think it's an important book. It's relevant. Thomas's writing is done well and really shows people's lives.

8. This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone

God, this novella was so interesting. I loved seeing the two different perspectives from these two aliens. This was short and sweet, but it told it's story and moved on. I also had a hard time telling the two authors apart. Which i loved this collab.

9. The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

God, this is a honker. Did it take me forever? Yes. Did I love it though? Yes. I do think it should have been split up in more than one novel? Yup. The characters are so indepth and we see a lot of their world lore. That's some good shit.

10. Our Dreams At Dusk by Yuhki Kamitani

Technically this manga is 4 volumes, but I'm gonna combine it into one. There really isn't any plot. There's a lot of queer rep and a lot of character study. These characters arn't perfect, but they are kids. It such a good story.

i got fIesh eater bc i wanted to see what travis’s writing is really like and read his story about gay furries with daddy issues. and i just finished it this evening while i had some downtime........ so here are my Thoughts.

(minor spoilers for fIesh eater under cut)

alright ill start w the stuff i liked. the plot was pretty interesting, like i definitely felt a pull to keep reading and i wanted to know what was gonna happen next? i mean i tend to get like that with most books so who knows. and his worldbuilding was interesting, if... heavyhanded, but its clear he has it all thought out in his head. ill probably read the other books in this trilogy when they come out, i think its a neat universe

the characters were. likable? if plain... not 2d, just not wildly exciting. their personalities feel described to the reader much more than theyre actually demonstrated in speech or action. his dialogue is kind of up and down, like its very stilted in some places and i figured it was just bc this is a fantasy book, but then its really modern and slangy immediately afterwards so i was left feeling kinda “???”. if it were like, some characters were stilted in speech and others werent, that would be one thing, but the main characters voice especially bounces around too much for me. i did like him, even if he felt maybe a little self-insert-y...? something ive been told travis has done with protags in his other novels, so who knows.

and what i really didnt like....... his prose!!!!! oh my god it was so. it was just not very good!! it wasnt strong or compelling, nor was it pretty. it was super utilitarian at best, clunky at worst, and there were some lines i read and just went “yeesh, really?” i think if he had an editor or god even a BETA READER to be like “um, this line sucks” it would have been drastically improved. sorry travis!!!! but your prose isnt good and if i opened a fic by you on ao3 i would hit the back button before i even got into it. like i respect that you can write this many words but your actual wordsmithing does not compel me.......

now...... the romance!!!!!!!!! the main character (a fox named coaI) enters a budding romance with a woodpecker named iIio. and honestly? its cute! is it particularly romantic? no, its sort of clumsy and robotic like the rest of his prose. but its sweet! i like that he wrote a fumbling gay romance and clearly put a lot of care into it. it doesnt really strike an emotional chord, because again its pretty robotic in the tone of the rest of the novel, but i liked it and i thought it was sweet. like they hold hands a lot and kiss by rubbing cheeks bc one of them is a bird and doesnt have lips which is cute. it was very natural in-universe and there was no fantasy homophobia or anything which i appreciated. also travis said this in his authors note and i thought it was cute.

so all in all, it was an enjoyable read, but it had some pretty glaring heavyhandedness in prose and worldbuilding. i wish he would do more showing, less telling, especially when it comes to how characters are feeling. also the dialogue needs workshopping in a lot of places. to judge him on ~the podcasts own rating scale~, id say its a 3/5, but i like travis so im gonna give him a 3.5/5 stars :-) and if i ever submit fanfic to him and he says one single thing about my writing abilities ill light him up on twitter<3 mwah

a run-down of / my thoughts on the novel ‘trade secrets’

so! i’ve recently finished this beautifully written novel by @bettsican, and am anxiously anticipating for the second book in the trilogy! (seriously, give it a read. it’s a great lgbtq+ thriller and mystery story, i promise you’ll love it!! you can find trade secrets in many places, including amazon, where it’s only $6)

as i was reading it, i noted down all the thoughts i had. it was fun, interesting, and kept me on the edge of my seat!

oh, and spoiler warning, of course.

Chapter One

okay. this is interesting. why are they in paris? or rather, why are they NOT in paris?

Final Thoughts

okay so this book was SO good, and so well written. like damn

aside from that horrible ending how could you do this to me

i’m joking, it was an incredible and emotional ending, i loved it and hated it at the same time

it very rarely felt static, and especially in the first half, there was a good mix of action and backstory/description. it was never boring

the story is just,,, so unique. i seriously haven’t read anything like it, EVER

the world-building?? Is?? so vast?? and insane??

the increasing tension and speed as the story progressed is perfect, i felt my heart beating faster the more i read

anyway that’s all from me

this book was amazing i cannot wait for the next

As a response to Gay Taleses failure to name any inspirational female writers, we asked our readers to explain why and how these authors changed their lives

It is hard to believe that this piece is still necessary. We long for the day when we dont have to single out authors or anyone of any walk of life, for that matter for their gender, but here we are again. Last weekend, author and New Journalism father Gay Talese was asked to name women writers who had inspired him at a Boston University event, to which he answered: None. He reportedly went on to say that educated women dont want to hang out with anti-social people, according to what journalist Amy Littlefield, who was in the audience, told the Washington Post.

Undoubtedly, the hashtag #womengaytaleseshouldread started bubbling on Twitter, and plenty of suggestions were made here is a tiny selection from authors:

I hope no one expected Talese, who doesn’t wear jeans, to think well of women. IDGAF about his opinions.

We have celebrated female authors on the Books site before, but we contacted some of our readers and asked them to tell us which female writers shaped their lives. Here are 10 of the most mentioned authors, in no particular order, and what our readers had to say about them:

1. Doris Lessing (1919 – 2013)

In my twenties, I was a foreigner in London. Reading Lessings subtly brilliant short story Out of the Fountain, I had that Keatsian feeling of a new world coming into view. As I read my way into the books of this fellow exile, her range and depth emerged from psychological portraits in granular detail, to vast explorations of cataclysm and survival. Class, sex, old age, childhood, the inner workings of politics, the wilder shores of the psyche she embraced complexity and got under the skin of the human condition with piercing acuity. This was writing from the frontiers of experience and utterly mind-stretching.

The two landmarks, for me, are Shikasta, her monumental portrait of humanity, and The Four-Gated City (part of the Children of Violence series), Lessings visionary mapping of London and the no-mans-land between psychosis and sanity this book opened doors for me. Her understanding of resilience and transformation in the midst of upheaval is profound. In our obfuscating times, we continue to need that eye. barbkay.

Start with: The Golden Notebook Hailed as one of the key texts of the womens movement of the 1960s, this study of a divorced single mothers search for personal and political identity remains a defiant, ambitious tour de force, wrote Robert McCrum.

When we asked readers for their favourite books by women, many replied with anything and everything written by Toni Morrison. Here are but a few.

Toni Morrisons Beloved is the best book I have ever read. A horror story in every sense. I re-read it as soon as I had finished it. Chilling, difficult, painful, but absolutely brilliant. afiercebadrabbit

The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy is my favourite book of all time, and I also adore Elif Shafak, whose fiction and essays as well as her talks are outstandingly fresh and insightful. Start with: Beloved If Beloved represents the terrible pain and suffering of a people whose very mother-love is warped by torture into murder, she is no thin allegory or shrill tract. This is a huge, generous, humane and gripping novel, wrote A S Byatt

3. Ursula K Le Guin (born 1929)

The Earthsea trilogy is absolutely magnificent: poetry, wisdom, sadness, satisfaction, fantasy, realism. Far better dragons than Tolkiens or George RR Martins, far better written the whole shebang, except for humour. But then, Tolstoy didnt go in for jokes much either. She taught me that there is nothing wrong with life or with death: the one is to be delighted in, the other accepted Daniel Mccormick in Coatbridge, Scotland

The Earthsea books by Ursula K Le Guin, which as an adult I find have greater moral depth than Tolkien and are better written and more focused than George RR Martins. QuesoManchego

4. Virginia Woolf (1882-1941)

I would like to put in a word for Virginia Woolf, and especially for the under-appreciated Orlando, where the long-lived protagonist starts out as a young nobleman before becoming a wife and mother. The book runs from Elizabethan England to 1928 and says a lot about the position of women while being both clever and funny. Perhaps Woolf is a bit too literary for some tastes, but Mrs Dalloway, To the Lighthouse , The Waves and A Room of Ones Own must surely speak to many. I think (hope) she will come to be recognised as one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. JackSchofield

To The Lighthouse, it had a huge impact on me when I first read it. It really made me consider and reconsider how I think and find direction. I loved Lily Briscoe and that devastatingly matter-of-fact middle chapter/section that splits the novel. There are so many books by women that I love, but TTL is my favourite. daveportivo

5. Clarice Lispector (1920 – 1977)

If a writer such as Clarice Lispector is to be considered significant from a feminist point of view, then it would probably be due to the absence of anything in her work or life which could be said to resemble the stereotype of the Lady Novelist. As well as living like a sort of secular hermit, her writing is elusive and mystical, being much less concerned with plot and character than with abstract ideas, such as The Apple in the Darks consideration of the nature of artistic creation or Agua Vivas obsessive focus on trying to isolate single moments in time. Although she could write movingly about womens experiences (especially in The Hour of the Star), her almost stubborn unworldliness otherwise gives the lie to the awful old clich that women are somehow deficient in considering the abstract, and shows that women are as unrestricted in subject matter as men. She really is one of the oddest and most individual writers Ive read.Jacob Howarth in Oxford

I heard of her just a month ago, from a Korean American friend. All I can say about her at this stage is that she knows me better than I do. I am reading The Complete Stories published 2015, which is full of lovely and shocking surprises. I finish one of her stories with a huge grin that lasts all day, another story may leave me arguing with myself … each one is having an profound impact on me.

She inspires me more than any other author in this second half of my life. Her uniquely fluid style reveals a mind so perspicacious, so permissively poetic and utterly radical. As a feisty feminist, I find peace in Lispectors reveries; she defies convention at every level by writing from deep within her psyche, embracing human flaws and foibles as perfectly natural. Her trademark self-acceptance is so refreshingly robust that I have found myself at times interrupting my reading with whoops of awe and admiration for her freedom of thought and spirit. Mars Drum

6. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (born 1977)

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichies Americanah has moved me like no other in recent memory. I would describe it as transformational because it provided an insight into the reality of what it means to be a young, ambitious, highly intelligent, sometimes single black woman in contemporary America. Its an honest book about race, identity and the constant longing and nostalgia one feels for this metaphorical place called home. I was also moved by the story because it touchingly describes the loving relationship between the two central characters, showcasing that neither space nor time can erase love.

We usually go back to the same desires and preferences we had as 15-year-olds, and Americanah captures this sentiment. Moreover, it is a transformational book because it portrays Nigeria as a place that is mythical, marvellous, chaotic and slightly dangerous, yet also wildly fascinating, with a magnetic power to attract its brightest emigrs back to its shores. Reading this has made me realise that some of the most powerful narratives in contemporary fiction have been written by young, highly educated female African writers, who are tired of the old clichs frequently bandied around about Africa. Ngozi Adichie is a new, powerful and incredibly talented voice; her novel Americanah is the expression of a different African tale, of a continent and its people that have many more magnetic stories to tell, as well as critiques to raise about the so-called enlightened West. beograd

7. Margaret Atwood (born 1939)

The Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwood. She predicted all that is happening today in that book. shofmann

Everything about it is scarily easy to imagine. Her descriptions of how women began to be punished for abortions reminds me of legislation happening right now in the USA, for example. getebi

8. Zadie Smith (born 1975)

On Beauty by Zadie Smith is absolutely brilliant. Smith is often categorized first by race and gender and thus is never considered the peer of other modern literary fiction writers like Franzen and Rushdie, but she easily beats them at their own style. emason1121

Windows on the Will: Smiths essay about watching the new Charlie Kaufman film Anomalisa, and Arthur Schopenhauer, was recently published on the New York Review of Books. I went to see Anomalisa, largely because of how interesting Smith made it seem, shared MildGloster.

9. Elena Ferrante (born 1943)

Of the many beautifully wrought themes explored in Elena Ferrantes masterful Neapolitan series, one that especially speaks to me, as a woman, is the question of what it means to attain presence versus what it means to disappear. Lila and Len, the central characters, each struggles to not disappear, despite the forces of class, history, and violence conspiring against them as women. Each tries to avoid what Lila loathingly describes as the problem of dissolving margins, when the outlines of people and things suddenly dissolved, disappeared. Reading Ferrante has led me to wonder: How many times have I, as a woman, faced being erased in relationships, in career, in the larger social order? 10. Angela Carter (1940 – 1992)

When I was at university I saw someone give a paper on Angela Carters dystopian masterpiece The Passion of New Eve. It was probably another year or so before I got my hands on a copy but I was not disappointed.

The premise alone a man captured by radical feminists and surgically transformed into a woman so that he may bear the messiah was enough to pique my interest, but it was Carters hallucinatory prose and rich symbolism that made this novel unforgettable. elbartonfink

Start with: Nights at the Circus the story of winged circus performer Sophie Fevverss travels through 19th-century Europe, that was named the best-ever winner of Britains oldest literary prize, the James Tait Black award.
