There’s an expression you’ve heard uttered around town, something about curiosity and how it relates to the lifespan of cats. Your family was always fond of idioms and figures of speech. Perhaps if you paid them any mind, you wouldn’t have found yourself in this mess.
It didn’t seem like a bad idea at the time—but in your defence, don’t all bad ideas seem like good ones at first? You’ve heard the rumours of strange creatures made of steel wandering in the woods near your hometown. You didn’t find any such creatures, but you did find a building embedded into the side of a mountain.
Inquisitiveness killed the kitten or something like that.
You can be stupid sometimes—you could acknowledge that fact gracefully. Maybe if you had any self-preservation, you wouldn’t have wandered this far. But it’s too late—you’re in too deep, both metaphorically and literally. You can’t find your way back now. All you can do is press forward.
You keep walking, dazed and entranced, until you come to a new room. Can you even call it a room? It’s more like an enormous steel box with barely anything inside it. There aren’t even any doors—just wide openings that stretch upwards for hundreds of feet. You spend what must be ten minutes staring at the ceiling that towers far, far above your head. Somebody could fit an entire building in this place. Are there whole buildings in here? What else would such a large facility be housing?
Booming footsteps. Someone is coming. Someone big.
Panic overtakes your limbs. You have to run. Suddenly fuelled by adrenaline, you bolt out of sight, positioning yourself behind a corner. You mutter under your breath, hyperventilating as the giant lumbers across the strange, metallic room. It strides horrifyingly close to your hiding spot, stopping just before the corner you’ve tucked yourself into. This is it, you decide as you bury your face in your hands. This is the day you’re going to die.
Someone—the giant, who else?—speaks with a silver tongue. “Oh?” they ask coyly, tone dripping with sarcasm. “What’s this?"
You only whimper in reply. You can’t see the giant moving, but you can feel his presence; you can sense him leaning closer and closer. His face must be mere feet away at this point.
The giant hums to himself. “So shy... but I suppose that’s to be expected. You are in a rather precarious situation, aren’t you?” Metal scrapes on metal, and the floor creaks beneath the giant’s weight. “What’s a human to do, I wonder? Run? Scream? Fight like a cornered turborat? How well would that work out for you?”
You’re frozen in place. The giant sighs deeply, annoyed with the one-sided conversation, then falls abruptly silent.
Minutes tick by. You hesitate to open your eyes, terrified of what might be awaiting you when you do. There’s not a sound to be heard. No footsteps, no voices, and no breathing. Did the giant leave?
You’ve had enough. The silence is deafening. You peer between your fingers, slowly and carefully, until you meet the piercing gaze of flickering red eyes.
“I thought you might have malfunctioned. Good to see you’re still operational.” The metallic giant, his face encompassing your entire field of vision, graces you with a smirk. You open your mouth to speak, or maybe to scream, but you only manage a choked syllable of horror when his long, snakelike fingers extend towards you. You jerk to the side to begin the process of running away, but two fingertips suddenly snag the back of your clothes. You’re now flying through the air, dangling by the collar of an old sweater.
The eyes are much closer now. Bright red irises within focus and unfocus, like a camera lens, and the minuscule pupils are black as pitch. “A human, I presume.” His voice is low and gravelly, with a robotic tinge. “No other creature would be stupid enough to waltz into my base with no weaponry.”
“I—I…” The words die on your tongue. You can’t speak. You can’t move. You can’t even tear your eyes away from the giant’s inquisitive gaze. You are suspended what must be a hundred feet in the air, directly beneath a face of metal and malice. What will become of you now?
He stares at you, silent and contemplative, until he finally speaks again. “Yes, Soundwave, it’s me. Please inform the patrol units of their incompetence… It seems an insect found its way into my office.”
