phil has decided they canonically shop at hot topic (that's where he bought the slime armour) (it's because of the family goth/emo aesthetic) and they have to drag tallulah in kicking and screaming but then she eventually finds something she likes

I don’t really like calamity Xie Lian trope, because it defeats the whole point of Xie Lian’s character.
There’s a thing about villains - almost all of them have the same flawed logic, which BWX is trying to push onto Xie Lian
The world (aka certain people and certain unfortunate circumstances) was unfairly cruel to them
And it made them… become a part of the world’s unfair cruelty.
It makes them ruin lives of innocent people despite the fact that they should know better than others how it feels to be in their place.
And Xie Lian almost falls for that logic, but then he DOESN’T.
And that THE WHOLE POINT of him as a character
If you think the world is unjust, why won’t you make it better? If people were cruel to you, it doesn’t mean that there are no good people??
And what’s especially great about Xie Lian, is that he was brought back not by a “kind” person, but by a man who was actually very, very rude to him
But then, despite his rudeness, despite his cruel words came back and helped him
Because his rudeness wasn’t intentionally hurtful, it was a thoughtless outrage over an inconvenience
Because… yeah, people are like that
We are like that
Imperfect
We get angry, we get petty, we are defensive, we are selfish
But we are never black and white.
A person can be cruel on one side, but kind on the other. It’s just the matter of perspective and reasons
And there are not just two sides
There are millions. People are extremely complicated. But also really simple, not thought-through.
And Xie Lian sees that. He sees through people’s outer cruelty.
He managed to see through the cruelty of the worst person, who ruined his entire life, and saw someone whose life was ruined before. Someone he almost became.
And that’s the key
Understanding
Because don’t we all have excuses for what we do? Why would you think your excuses are better than others’?
Hate just breeds more hate.
So why won’t we all see ourselves in each other
And probably that would make the world a better place.
