Tyger Tyger, burning bright, In the forests of the night; What immortal hand or eye, Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
In what distant deeps or skies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Burnt the fire of thine eyes? On what wings dare he aspire?
Tumblr media
What the hand, dare seize the fire?
Tumblr media
And what shoulder, & what art, Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat, What dread hand? & what dread feet?
Tumblr media
What the hammer? what the chain, In what furnace was thy brain? What the anvil? what dread grasp, Dare its deadly terrors clasp!

When the stars threw down their spears And water'd heaven with their tears: Did he smile his work to see? Did he who made the Lamb make thee?

Tyger Tyger burning bright, In the forests of the night: What immortal hand or eye, Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

Godzilla: Singular Point impressions
Beware! The spoilers in this post are coming from the future~!!
So today was the premier date of the last episode of Godzilla: Singular point. Since there's a lot more content between 13 episodes compared to a movie or two, I'm probably going to need another rewatch to fully decide on my feelings. Luckily, we only need another week before it's added to netflix. Anyways, here's my pros and cons.
Pros:
~This anime loves the Godzilla series. It's just peppered with references to the franchise, and in some surprising ways. Not to mention the ending theme, which is a love letter to everyone who's ever cared about a Godzilla film past it's monster characters.
~The original characters in this series are great. There's a decently diverse cast of characters, which is fairly unique for an anime like this. Their designs are immediately readable and convey a lot of emotion, which is more than I can say for certain other Godzilla anime.
~Overall, the animation is great. I understand the need to split animation between Bones and Orange, but overall the kaiju/mecha CG still blends well with the traditional animation. The anime itself is colorful, and the action scenes have a real weight to them, especially when Jet Jaguar swings the Anguirus Spear around
~I love the new Jet Jaguar. The combination of industrial machinery and Pero 2 as an AI pilot add a great wrinkle to the character's legacy.
Cons:
~Unfortunately I don't want to be that person who complains about Godzilla screen-time but I really think that Godzilla was not well implemented into the story. It's interesting that SP Goji has a similar evolution to Shin Godzilla, but each stage changes so quickly from episode to episode that it doesn't matter to the plot, other than "Godzilla is coming, you better watch out!!"
~While I like the kaiju in this series, I feel like they draw too close to "Realistic" megafauna, compared to the mythical larger-than-life kaiju I generally associate with the Godzilla series. Kaiju like Anguirus and Kumonga have interesting abilities but are largely cut down unceremoniously, they feel like they're there to pad out action scenes before the finale. I would like have liked more time spent with Anguirus, a seemingly docile kaiju who has the most interesting powers but it largely disposed of without a second thought.
~I love sci-fi technobabble but there is a lot of it in Singular Point, and I don't know if it's for the better. There's a lot of hints as to what's happening through them, but I don't think they're thorough enough to really understand the time-travel theoretical physics stuff they're depicting
~The stinger: While I'm so excited for a potential sequel series, I have the feeling that a lot of important plot points were saved for whatever comes next from Singular Point. Hopefully now that the world and the various kaiju are established, the next series can transition smoothly into a more traditional Godzilla story.
Overall I'm tough on this anime because I really like it. Singular Point is not perfect, but I think it's a great entry into the Godzilla Reiwa canon, and hopefully gives us a good idea of where the franchise goes from here. Solid 7.5-8/10.

Godzilla SP Anguirus being the best boi.
I love how this series has a habit of giving a comical edge to the action sequences without breaking the tension, it gives off a very classic Showa/Heisei feel.

Spoilers for Godzilla Singular Point
The science in this show is (already notoriously) difficult to wrap your head around, but I think Jet Jaguar PP's existence is a time loop/bootstrap paradox. The original Jet Jaguar got the upgrades and Orthogonal Diagonalizer codes from the song and then PP transmitted the song back in time to ensure its own existence.
Now I wish I could figure out where the monsters came from. Are they from the future, or an alternate universe, or do they spontaneously appear when there's enough Archetypes in an area? Were the Godzilla bones in Misakioku's basement the same individual as the one that attacked Tokyo or another of the same species?
How is Ashihara still alive?

Do you think Monarch & the rest of the Titans would intervene if the events of Singular Point happened Post-Abraxas?
Imagine a little brawl between that Godzilla & his MV counterpart....though to be fair-the latter would EASILY beat his imitator to the ground because he doesn't have that much melee feats beyond his (spoilers) fight with Jet Jaguar in Episode 13.
There is also the question of how Monarch would research the 'Red Mist' that is seemingly bringing much smaller versions of the titans to life....And that not even going to the hints that a (spoilers) 3rd MG is being built behind closed doors and possibly going to be used as an Anti-Kaiju weapon...
On the lighter side-if SP Goji is friendly, I can see him & Shin quickly becoming friends on the basis that they needed to go through multiple forms to reach their current ones;with SP's being much more violent as he needed to eat a Manda in order to evolve in his next form. As for the others, how would they think of the Singular Point kaiju?
Monster business is Monarch business, so I imagine they would. Obviously the Red Mist thing is a cause for concern, as are rumors of yet another Mechagodzilla under construction after the last two weren't enough (at least Kiryu!Dagon turned out to be a cool guy).
Although, Monster X hearing about how SP Goji has killed and eaten SP Manda specimens goes full Mama/Uncle Bear and gets super protective of their Manda(zawa). So SP Goji coming to visit Shin always gets initially greeted by a very small, very angry, very spiky kaiju just silently glaring at him with Murder in their eyes and intimidation display making them look like a red Tesla coil.
SP Goji: Hi, Shin's uncle-mom.
Monster X: IF YOU SO MUCH AS LOOK AT MY BABY I WILL EAT YOUR EYES.
SP Goji: ...Shin, I'm starting to think your mom has issues.
(As for the others, Mandazawa looks at SP Manda and goes "SNEK! BIG SNEK!"; Rodan looks at the juvenile SP Rodan and his inner hen activates; everyone looks at SP Jet Jaguar and has a good laugh because matter what he looks like, Jet Jaguar has a way of making one feel better; MV Goji gets misty-eyed seeing SP Anguirus because... he really, really misses his old friend.)

Seen some people are getting angry and I don’t quite agree
The reason the kaiju are getting weird new powers compared to older monster is part of the writers wanting to analyze genre assumptions
We talk all the time how kaiju would need exotic materials and substances to  exist and do what they do, and this time its a plot point. There’s a company trying to create the very types of materials that allow these kaiju to channel energy, seem to violate the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics and even manage to walk and fly without collapsing , and I’m excited to see where it goes
And since the writer is a huge math and science nerd it seem he’s asking “ok, what other implications would this fictional material have/what else could be done.”

Ok so there’s some spoilers here for Godzilla: Singular Point, just be aware of that.
I think there’s an interesting connection between Godzilla Ultima and Alduin from the Elder Scrolls where they’re both indicators of the end times. For SP it’s the catastrophe involving ultima and Alduin swallows the world. Alduin is continually banished further into the future so he doesn’t swallow the world right away. Similarly, Ultima is defeated by Jet Jaguar PP but the story is that he will return again to bring about the catastrophe. I thought that was a pretty interesting parallel between these. I like the new kind of Godzilla that Toho is exploring where he is just able to continually return, with this and Shin Godzilla so I’m excited to see where Singular Point goes from here.
