Maybe the world could be ours
“Oh, thanks. If I’m being honest, I’m more worried about what Kunikida-san is going to think of me. After all, he’s my direct… superior, I guess? Now.” They doubt not clicking fully would result in getting fired, but still Sigma couldn’t help feeling a bit nervous about it. Until Nikolai burst into laughter. “You’re kidding, right? He’s gonna love you, trust me.” The conviction he said it with may not be the magical remedy against Sigma’s nervousness, but damn if it didn’t help.

Hallucinatory 1967 Soviet horror film,(first Soviet-era horror film to be officially released in the USSR) VIY, directed by Konstantine Yershov and George Kropachyov.
Based on the classic novella by Nikolai Gogol – and previously adapted by Mario Bava as BLACK SUNDAY – the first horror film ever produced in the Soviet Union remains “genuinely frightening” (1001 Films You Must See Before You Die), “a visual grab bag of terror” (FilmInquiry.com) and “one of the best horror films of all time.” (IndieWire): In 19th century Russia, a seminary student is forced to spend three nights with the corpse of a beautiful young witch. But when she rises from the dead to seduce him, it will summon a nightmare of fear, desire and the ultimate demonic mayhem. Bursting with startling imagery and stunning practical effects by directors Konstantin Yershov and Georgi Kropachyov, this “overlooked classic” (Paste Magazine) has influenced generations of directors for more than half a century and is still unlike any horror movie you’ve ever seen.

what i love about Fyolai is how "insane clown tries to kill his only friend that he's in love with" sounds like the plot of some A24 indie slasher horror film about fear of love and what it means to be free that ends with them killing each other as ~~symbolism~~ but because Fyodor is also a weirdo it just turns into BSD

Sigma and nikolai sketches + hcs below ♡
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Be warned most of these are about their appearances and why they look how they do. Bc yeah
Sigma
I tried to make lines much lighter and less defined with this sketch, because in my opinion sigma doesn't really present himself with much of a definition. He's very unsure of where he fits in the world
I know we like to define him with his ordinary man line, but for me that was just as circumstances were for him.
The times he's called himself an "ordinary man" were times he was surrounded by ability users (with more attention-attracting abilities) and so called geniuses, meaning that in a normal setting sigma would absolutely stand out. So, his defining himself as ordinary is not really concrete and leaves us and him unsure of who he really is, or was
Last to add onto that point, I tried to sort of make his eyes a bit darker. Sigma clearly knows what he wants, and I wasn't sure how to portray this but I settled on his eyes. He may not completely understand himself himself he sees his goal which I think really drives most of his actions as a character
One thing that I think is very overlooked is that sigma spent most of his time in the desert. He likely didn't have much food (isn't one of his character dislikes being hungry? I think so). I decided to give him slightly sunken cheeks, though I don't think they'd sink to the point where people noticed I do think he'd have a slightly more defined face shape because of this
I think his hair is very neat and flat. Considering how much time he spent I'm the desert I don't think sigma would mind his hair quality all that much, but he'd definitely be happier keeping it well-taken care of
Nikolai
I tried to make Nikolai more youthful-looking. When I first started the sketch he looked like a baby lol
I do think he has a slight baby face. His face would be a bit rounded and I think he'd have a bit of a wider nose.
However I also don't think he'd be cute, he'd be a little unsettling. If I were to meet him I'd be a little bit uncomfortable and I tried to portray that through his expression
I'm not an animator but if I was I'd assign nikolai a sort of spontaneous, jerking movement pattern. I think he moves a lot, and i think he moves in very erratic ways.
I don't think nikolai is actually sane
I tried to define his lines a bit more because I think nikolai is very confident. While I don't think he's really got it all figured out I think he deserves a very assured line style and movement pattern.

headcanon; nikolai's favorite movie is the nightmare before christmas. knows the songs, sits and watches it multiple times, and if you need him for something? it better be pretty important, 'cause he doesn't like to be pulled away from the screen!!
probably an oogie boogie defender tbh

Fear Before The Fall: Horror Films in the Late Soviet Union by Alexander Herbert - Book Review
I am of that age (Generation X aka The Haunted Generation) whereby a significant part of my childhood was enveloped in the Cold War fears of an impending nuclear apocalypse. A terror adequately catered for by the less than a handful of terrestrial channels emitting their cathode rays into British living rooms. Dystopian dramas such as Threads, When the Wind Blows, the eventual broadcast of the…

Cosplay the Classics: Barbara Steele as Asa/Katia Vajda in Black Sunday (1960)
Tumblr media
Sometimes October flies by and you’re left with very little time to put together an appropriately ghoulish look for the big night: Halloween! But, with a little construction paper, colored pencils, safety pins, and a black sheet… you too can closet cosplay Barbara Steele in her dual role of Asa and Katia Vajda in the Italian horror classic Black Sunday / La maschera del demonio (1960).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I personally adore this movie, and its source material, so hopefully, when I have some more time to spare, I’d love to give it a full write up. Maybe a Gogol on film series???
Anyways, Happy Halloween!
