Yunmeng Shuangjie shadowbox!! It may be Sad Times for Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng, but they look so pretty when they’re dressed in beautiful patterns and thinking angsty thoughts. :D
I really enjoyed making the shuangjie last year, so for this year’s holiday sale I knew I had to make them again! I paid extra attention to the lighting and layering, and I’m really happy with how they all come together to look like the (craft pearl!) core is faintly glowing.
This artwork will be available in my upcoming holiday sale, lovelies!

In a previous post of mine, I talked about Jiang Cheng's insecurity surrounding the Golden Core and how that anxiety is built around the fact that there are no more miracles for him. And I wanted to talk about miracles in the MDZS universe and also why I adore the way Wei Wuxian is written as a protagonist.
Jiang Cheng receiving a new Golden Core in place of his melted one is held up as a miracle in the narrative, until the truth behind it is eventually revealed. And we very easily buy into this miracle, because... well, Wei Wuxian is the Protagonist, isn't he? He is an orphan son of the disciple of the only named immortal in the entire novel universe and surely that plays a role! A protagonist has an inheritance, a prophecy, a special weapon - something that inherently gives them an edge, something to pull out of their arsenal when all seems lost.
So when Wei Wuxian solves the issue of Jiang Cheng's lost Golden Core by calling on a promised gift from his mother's immortal master, it does not seem far fetched or even too unbelievable. But the very act of it, is framed as a miracle by the writing style - the anonymity, Jiang Cheng taking Wei Wuxian's name and essentially his birthright, the secrecy and mysteriousness that surrounds the entire scene. Just look at this line from the novel,
BaoShan SanRen, a legendary celestial who had lived for hundreds of years, a secluded master who was said to be able to revive the dead, give flesh to bones!
So, we are led to believe that this is the purpose of Wei Wuxian's birth identity - the connection to the mysterious immortal we never meet. The Protagonist's past comes into the play and saves the day - or so we are led to believe.
The second reason why the miracle does not come across as unbelievable, is due to the Yi City arc, wherein we meet two characters who had a pretty similar encounter as Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng. We know - even before we know about Lotus Pier's fall and Jiang Cheng losing his Core - of how Xiao Xingchen begged his master for a miracle, to return Song Zichen his eyes.
However, while the narrative is building for us the belief that Jiang Cheng getting a new Core is not impossible, Yi City also simultaneously shows us that even miracles from immortals come at a price. Xiao Xingchen does not get Song Zichen a new pair of eyes - he essentially offers his own. So even then, we know that miracles are not that easy of a fix as we think them to be.
Nevertheless, the miracle that Wei Wuxian calls upon is essentially pushed to the back of our minds as the plot unravels - and right up to the Second Siege, we don't pay it much mind. But then, the Core Reveal happens, and everything comes crashing.
The core of the miracles in MDZS universe, is that miracles don't exist and fix things for us - the only thing we can do, is create those miracles for ourselves. The Protagonist with the mysterious bloodline is an irrelevant trope to define Wei Wuxian, because it does not lend anything to him - he has no miracles in his arsenal, only his own wit and mind. And that is what he does. He creates the miracle for Jiang Cheng, and that miracle comes at a tremendous price.
But it is also at the very soul of who Wei Wuxian is as a character and a person - he is defined by his brilliance and his refusal to let tragedy frame the way he lives his life. He does not have miracles waiting for him to call upon - but he damn well will create them.
This trope about the miracle also ties into his invention of the ghost path. It's not this special, secret knowledge passed down by a powerful predecessor ( in novel canon that is ) - it is a path he creates in a pure bid to survive the unsurvivable. He is in a place that should have meant both painful death and no peace for his soul, even if he had the advantage of a golden core - and he takes what he is handed, and creates a new path of cultivation.
Wei Wuxian as a protagonist is characterized by how active he is in his choices and decisions - he is not someone who just was 'special' because of bloodline or prophecy. He earns every bit of his power, and he exemplifies the kind of protagonist who chooses his destiny and is never handed anything on a platter - in fact, his social status in the MDZS universe dictates that he will forever be 'son of a servant' as far as they are concerned. However, this lack of privileges and miracles does not bother Wei Wuxian, nor does it deter him - He is still the Master of the Six Arts. He is still one of the most powerful cultivators of his generation. He is a genius who invented his own path of cultivation. His theories changed how night hunting worked. His inventions were prized and enviously sought. And every bit of that is a result of the hard work and dedication he put into himself - not a miracle.

The botched manhua ending failing to reveal Jiang Cheng's own sacrifice has got me thinking about the antis overused argument for "sticking to the canon."
They are all for using the canon argument when it best suits them. I didn't see any wangxian fans critcise the manhua for failing to include an integral part of the novel.
Jiang Cheng's sacrifice was just as important as Wei Wuxian's as each were the catalyst that led up to the events in the novel. And both illustrate each of the character's personalities, true nature and ultimately the love they held for one another.
Excluding Jiang Cheng's sacrifice is a deviation from the canon. If you're going to argue canon for every argument, you better apply that logic to every character and every scenenario. Because the silence from the wangxian fans regarding this cock up is truly deafening.
Note: This is not an attack on all wangxian fans. I understand not all are belligerent JC antis and I've met some lovely people from that side of the fandom too. I'm just critical of the hypocritical wangxian fans who attack JC fans for "straying from the canon" whilst endorsing adaptations that have strayed from the canon..

"And the most important thing..." Wei Wuxian added. "... If you're asked for your identity, you must say you are the son of Cangse-sanren. You must never reveal your true identity!"
Interesting that Wei Wuxian adds this to the list of requirements to get Jiang Cheng's golden core returned. There's no reason for it—all it does is add some mysticism to the process.
But it does mean that Jiang Cheng is impersonating Wei Wuxian—taking his place. On some level it implies that he's taking something from Wei Wuxian.
And I find that absolutely fascinating. What's going on in your head, Wei Wuxian? Was some part of you yearning to say "I am giving up who I am for you"? Did it feel poetic?

MDZS Wangxian - Golden core reveal
Stories #2
↑Description:
In which the YiLing Patriarch dies to protect his family... and reincarnates into that same family years later
↑Description:
No one has tried to understand his cultivation. Everyone believes he needs Chenqing to defend himself. No one would ever think his cultivation would protect him, without his command.
But it would, and when someone steals his first kiss, Wei Wuxian can feel it, gathering to protect him... and then doesn't.
There are only three people his cultivation would never harm. There is only one person that is not a sibling to his heart.
There is no one else but one person that his heart has longed for, and maybe in another life he might not have realized who kissed him, but Wei Wuxian does, and this changes everything.
Because no one else but Lan Wangji has felt how it truly feels, Wei Wuxian's cultivation.
↑Description:
The destruction of the Stygian Tiger Amulet not only killed Wei Wuxian, but shattered his spiritual cognition, scattering his memories far and wide. Now resurrected in the body of Mo Xuanyu, Wei Wuxian undertakes not only the mysterious case of the resentful severed arm, but also a journey to regain the memories he’s lost. Fortunately, both Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng had a head start, encountering some of his memories by chance and hunting down others. That insight into “the mind of Wei Wuxian” takes all of them on the same, and yet profoundly different journey to redeem Wei WuXian’s character and reveal Jin Guangyao’s machinations.
↑Description:
Unwilling to leave any possible advantage on the table, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji dual cultivate before fighting the Xuanwu of Slaughter, accidentally creating something in the process.
Beset by violence, misfortune, and tragedy in the months that follow, Wei Wuxian quietly bears the consequences.
↑Description:
Jin Zixun poisoned that wine he gave to the twin Jades. Or planned to. He was /planning/ to have a little fun with them and make them appear a little drunk by the poison to draw on their golden cores. What he did not know is that Wei Wuxian would step in and -because he has no core- just collapse immediately in the middle of the banquet.
↑Description:
in the midst of the Sunshot campaign, Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangi and Jiang Wanyin find themselves in a classroom full of teenage cultivators. Wei Wuxian decides to make a change.

Series
↑Description:
It isn't until Nie Mingjue wakes up in the Burial Mounds after a night-hunt gone awry, that he realizes just how wrong the Cultivation World is about the Yiling Patriarch, Wei Wuxian.
There is no "Ghost Army," just biding their time until the right moment to strike. Just a group of Wen Remnants trying to survive on land that was never suited for life. There is no "Demon of the Burial Mounds," just Wei Wuxian, trying his best to keep his new family alive while nearly starving himself in the process.
Nie Mingjue thought he knew everything. Merely days ago he thought that sieging the Burial Mounds was the safest option if given a reason to do so. But meeting the Wen Remnants, and A-Yuan who affectionately calls him "Green-gege!" he realizes something vital.
He was wrong, and he better do something to fix it before it's too late.
↑Description:
Lan Wangji was dreaming. He had to be; although, his heart had never beat so fast in a dream before. Wei Wuxian was here. Wei Wuxian was here, standing in Cloud Recesses.
Hey, what was going on in Lan Wangji's head during Righteous at a Cost?
↑Description:
In which a side effect of losing your core is not having the same drink tolerance, and Wei Wuxian starts revealing things like the sad teen he is

Many medics were among the cultivators who came. They grabbed a few people and felt for their pauses. The people asked, “How is it? How is it? Is the disappearance of our spiritual powers temporary or permanent?!” The question immediately attracted the attention of many people. They didn’t have the spare time to take precautions against Wei WuXian any longer. After all, if their spiritual powers had disappeared forever, eternally, they’d be more-or-less useless. That’d definitely be a more agonizing end than dying here. The medics had a short discussion before they spoke, “Everyone, your golden cores are unharmed. There’s no need to worry! It should be temporary.” Hearing that it was temporary, Jiang Cheng finally let out a secret sigh of relief.
You know, I always found this scene during the (failed)second siege very interesting. For one, it is further establishing the importance the cultivators put upon their Golden Cores before the inevitable and dramatic core reveal - the narrative makes clear how huge a sacrifice Wei Wuxian made in the Golden Core transfer.
For another, it shows how much anxiety Jiang Cheng has, with regard to losing his Golden Core. And isn't that telling? For one, he knows precisely well how losing his Golden Core feels. For another, he also knows, perfectly and precisely well, that there will be no more miracles for him in that regard.
Because he knows that he took Wei Wuxian's identity to get a second chance from an immortal - knows that Wei Wuxian had pulled off the impossible to get him his Core back. And he also knows that the miracle was a one time thing.
And the person who made the impossible possible for him, is precisely the man he led a siege against and pushed to his death.
I just think its very telling of Jiang Cheng to be worried about losing his spiritual powers a second time, because he knows damn well that there will be no Wei Wuxian to create a miracle this time.
