Tell us your theory on why he says that PLEASE. I don’t think it’s true they have to fix things 😭
Tumblr media
So, this post points out a huge flaw in Wei Wuxian's response and its discrepancy to what we know of their relationship in canon. The Golden Core transfer is one of MANY things they need to discuss to get past their estranged, brittle, slightly obsessive relationship.
When we take a close look at why Jiang Cheng is so angry and so hurt here, it's not just about his family or any debt Wei Wuxian might have had to his parents. Ultimately, it's about Wei Wuxian's promise to remain by Jiang Cheng's side. He lost his parents and their entire sect, then he lost his own core trying to protect Wei Wuxian (who doesn't know!) then his "martial brother/brother/best friend/whatever" not only goes missing for three months but returns with new powers and new issues he won't share with anyone. Not even Yanli.
Jiang Cheng wanted to protect Wei Wuxian but was unable to due to larger political circumstances and the fact that he didn't know about the transfer. He didn't know why Wei Wuxian was using demonic cultivation! He warns Wei Wuxian again and again that there are larger risks of his cultivation, and he turned out to be right. Trouble found Wei Wuxian even when he ran off and hid peacefully! And he never knew why.
To Jiang Cheng, Wei Wuxian asking to leave the sect -- regardless of whether or not it was to protect them from further scrutiny by the other sects -- is him asking to leave Jiang Cheng's side. To break their promise without any explanation. He already lost so much and all he can see here is losing another person he loves.
I want to drive that point in, really.
Any insecurity Jiang Cheng feels over Wei Wuxian's capabilities is often outweighed by his sense of responsibility towards rebuilding his sect and attempting to protect what remains of the family he had before the attack on Lotus Pier.
He didn't want to tell Wei Wuxian about why he lost his golden core for the same exact reason that Wei Wuxian kept the surgery a secret. They didn't want to hurt each other with the knowledge of such a great sacrifice. A sacrifice no one would have ever asked of either of them, no matter what was "owed." The Transfer was experimental and pretty much something no cultivator would even attempt. That's what made this choice so risky and so hard to account for.
Neither had any real way to weight the risks and consequences of this situation, and by never talking about it even during a tearful argument, we got canon events. (I've seen people talk about how Wei Wuxian's circumstances meant he had very little else to choose but survival, but this is true for Jiang Cheng too.)
And really. They both tried so hard to survive. And yet, when faced with terrible choices, they chose to protect each other. Putting their cultivation on the line to save each other's lives is not something anyone would normally do. Duty could have been a factor, but in my opinion, it wouldn't have taken Wei Wuxian that far. It wasn't even a factor in Jiang Cheng's.
And I think this is why people feel so put off by Wei Wuxian claiming it was done out of duty to the Yunmeng Jiang family. But it doesn't start with him. Their entire confrontation starts out with Jiang Cheng questioning what the sect meant to Wei Wuxian, if everything they gave him (everything they were to him) was worth nothing. This is almost entirely a projection of what Jiang Cheng asks when he cries. What he really feels is hidden in questions about martial duty.
"Why did you not tell me?"
For all his words, it was less about their sect and so much more about Jiang Cheng feeling like he was worth nothing to Wei Wuxian.
We know this. But Wei Wuxian doesn't.
I didn't notice it immediately, but Wei Wuxian's whole thing is deflection. It's about telling small truths and laughing things off or forcing himself to forget entirely. By the end of their confrontation, he does it again by asking Jiang Cheng to let it stay in the past, now that it's out there, but this does nothing to reduce the tension. It just deflects it again.
I think Wei Wuxian's response to Jiang Cheng's questions was to focus on what he thought was most important. Duty, debt to the Yunmeng Jiang. It was a deflection from what was really wrong. He didn't want to address his own complicated feeling, much less try to untangle whether Jiang Cheng hates him or loves him, so he doesn't.
Whatever broke between them wasn't about duty of any kind. It was about sacrifice, and the pain of carrying its burden alone. It was about loving someone enough to do something so drastic and never being able to say it.
Jiang Cheng hearing that the transfer was out of duty hurts him deeply, because he doesn't know that Wei Wuxian loves him. But Wei Wuxian doesn't know that's what Jiang Cheng is looking for. He hears the first part of their confrontation and responds to that.
Not, "Why did you never tell me?" But 'Did the Yunmeng Jiang mean nothing to you?'
Those are two different questions.
Wei Wuxian is trying to tell Jiang Cheng that it did mean something. That Lotus Pier's destruction, the Jiang parents and Yanli's deaths mattered to him. He's trying to release Jiang Cheng's burden without realizing that, by saying it had nothing to do with him, he's saying that Jiang Cheng didn't matter enough.
This is not how Wei Wuxian feels, we know this. But, again, Jiang Cheng doesn't.
They're talking right past each other, and because of all their other issues, they not only don't realize it, but might never be able to truly address it. They're so used to keeping their feelings hidden from each other that they can't even see how much they, as individuals, matter to each other.
TL;DR.
Both of them love each other and couldn't say it because of their complicated. Well, everything. Instead, their misconceptions cause them both to focus on the wrong things at the wrong time. By asking about what the Yunmeng Jiang meant to Wei Wuxian, it hides what Jiang Cheng really wants to know: if it was done out of love and protectiveness as his sacrifice had been. By focusing on this deflection, Wei Wuxian hides his own feelings by placing duty to the Jiang sect in highest importance. He gives the answer that he thinks Jiang Cheng wants to hear.
So, no, I don't think Wei Wuxian wasn't telling the truth (or at least not the full truth) either.
In the end, this is not what either of them actually wanted from the confrontation and does very little to address their actual emotional issues. All it really does is open the door for something to change in the future.

The real reason we don't get to see Wei Wuxian find out about Jiang Cheng’s sacrifice is because it would literally make him implode. It was all his fault! He couldn't look after his brother and sister, which was the whole point! He was loved just as much as he loved them, and it was more important than repaying a life debt!! He made Jiang Cheng's sacrifice pointless with his own because Wei Wuxian apparently mattered more than his life!! How dare Jiang Cheng decide he matters more than his own life!! So many of the assumptions he makes about himself and those he loves, and all the decisions he's made based on these assumptions, utterly shattered. We saw Jiang Cheng’s meltdown at the golden core reveal but Wei Wuxian's would be a 1000 times worse, character development takes a setback that would need a whole other fifty episodes to recover from.

everyone is like: if wei wuxian told everyone he gave his core to Jiang Cheng, all of this wouldn't have happened!
me: if he told jiang cheng, it would be WORSE.
consider these points:
Jiang Cheng was a newly appointed sect leader, hell-bent on revenge, finally surpassing others. He would emotionally break if he finds out it's all because of Wei Wuxian's core. He wouldn't want to lose it; but Wei Wuxian holding that over his head will make it terrible for him; rage, tantrums; in that war-time would have literally robbed him of his senses.
This is a war. If some people find out Wei Wuxian doesn't have a core, what's stopping the enemy from finding out? Even so, there would be people who wish to kill the ever-powerful son of a servant. The hundreds-hole curse could only succeed because Jin Zixun had low cultivation. Think of how many enemies (Wens, and the others) Wei Wuxian had. They don't dare curse him because 1) they believe he has superior cultivation and 2) if he comes for revenge with his stygian tiger seal and chenqing, it simply wouldn't be worth it. So, high risk and low reward. but in actuality, if someone did curse him, without a core to cleanse him, it would be fatal!
As the "son of a servant" and "wielder of immense power," his place in the cultivation world was already unstable. If they find out he doesn't even have a core, he cannot stay in the cultivation world! If he leaves, then there's no protection guaranteed for him from those who wish to claim his power anyway!
Literally, the only ones who would genuinely care would be Lan Wangji and Jiang Yanli. And what could they do? Lan Xichen would be sympathetic, but when has sympathy saved lives when there's no follow-up action? Nie Mingjue would commend his sacrifice, but will he save the Wens? Nope. Nobody would magically go like, "oh, let us help wei wuxian who doesn't have a core tragically."
Among the general public, would anyone look at it as anything other than a grand sacrifice for his superior? "Wei Wuxian is really loyal," and when he saves the Wens, it would go down the path of, "Can't believe he betrayed the Jiang Clan."
The only one who wished to know the why's and the how's and the reasoning behind it all was Lan Wangji. Lan Wangji, who would try his utter best; but Wei Wuxian himself was so powerful. Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan were powerful. Wen Qing and Wen Ning were also powerful. All the righteous people had tragic ends - if Lan Wangji was allowed to know, he would push harder at Wei Ying. But will Wei Ying accept it? Will he feel a certain disregard of respect? A lack of trust from Lan Wangji because they dont have the fundamentals down?How can it magically make things alright, when their issues go deeper than Wei Wuxian being on an "unorthodox path"? So, who's to say, even if Lan Wangji realized it all, somehow forced himself into Wei Wuxian's space when Wei Wuxian did not want it with some OOC syndrome, but even then what can he do? In the end, rather than just one, both would die. The odds are bad when it's 1 vs 3000, but is it much better if it's 2 vs 3000?
Wei Wuxian's arrogance protected the secret that would've signed him out of the war, out of the cultivation world. The fear people had for him protected him. Even after his death, they only noticed the annihilation of minor clans because "oh no yllz is here to take revenge!" If he acted weak and approachable and sad, just how few would hold true empathy compared to all the many that would see an opportunity to strike? Whoever wields power, speaks out, and is from an unproveleged background yet sitting among the gentry is already an outcast.
The only way he wouldn't have died were if he were someone who bowed to servitude, if he kept quiet, if he counted his losses and gains like Jin Guangyao. Will this harm me? Yes. So I cannot do it.
That's not Wei Wuxian.
"Let gains and losses remain uncommented upon." If the whole world wishes to kill innocents to satiate their own hatred then the whole world is wrong, and he won't stand up for it - whether or not, he has a romantic relationship with Lan Wangji early, or if he's actual siblings with the Jiangs (like actually adopted.)
Whether he wields a sword or his flute or nothing at all; whether he's loved or hated, he is bound to be resented by those who are hypocrites. The loss of his golden core won't shake them with empathy, but mockery not just towards him, but towards Jiang Wanyin as well.
"Congratulations, Jiang Cheng, for killing the man who killed your entire family (false, but you know) and was unrighteous!"
"But isn't the Jiang Clan only alive because of Wei Wuxian's core?"
"Jiang Wanyin is such a loser; he took his servant's core."
That would be a fucking literal nightmare. That is why, Wei Wuxian doesn't say a word or whine or cry. He probably thought he could wait until Jiang clan is in a better spot and tell only Jiang Cheng, but by then, he'd already been caught up in the Wen's situation.

E, Series, WIP, 184k, Wangxian
Summary: A night-hunt goes wrong, and Wei Wuxian is scapegoated for the death of the Jiang Sect Leader and the destroyed core of the Jiang Sect Heir. As punishment, his core is taken and given to Jiang Cheng, and he is stripped of his cultivation credentials and expelled from the sect. What everyone forgot was that Wei Wuxian was wearing the standard issue body camera that each cultivator wore on training missions and high-risk night-hunts. Struggling to make ends meet, Wei Wuxian finds his way to Caiyi Town with the doctor who performed the surgery, a partial core still secretly in place. His application to work at Cloud Recesses is summarily rejected by the hard-edged Second Jade of Lan after an unfortunate initial encounter. But things change when someone hacks into the Jiang systems and releases the footage of what happened. Kay's comments: The series is still a WIP, but the main story is complete! I am so weak for Kizu's modern AUs with cultivation, they are great. Especially the world building and how the cultivation society might function in a modern AU shines in this story. Definitely not a story for fans of the Jiang family, but a story for everyone who wants to see some retribution for the things Wei Wuxian went through. Here, Jiang Fengmian dies during a night-hunt accident where Jiang Cheng's golden core gets destroyed and Madam Yu makes Wei Wuxian give his golden core to him, unfortunately for her, his body-cam is still filming everything. Wei Wuxian finds himself taken in by Wen Qing and her family and we get the sweetest found family and Dadxian vibes here and then meets Lan Wangji as well, who's highly judgemental at first but soon finds himself drawn to Wei Wuxian as well. This story really got it all, the drama, the horny, the softness, the restitution & humor. Excerpt: Still Wei Wuxian forced himself to at least try one last time. “You could also interview me. Have me talk to your best talisman experts,” Wei Wuxian said, forcing himself to keep the desperation out of his voice. “Interviews are scheduled based on receipt of proper credentials and references.” “I don’t have any, at least not right now. But that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t be a great teacher.” “No references, no interview.” “Come on. Look, ask me anything about talismans. You’re an experienced cultivator, right? So you must know enough to at least interview me to see if I know what I’m talking about.” “Simply ‘knowing about something’ is not sufficient. Our lecturers are renown cultivators, and masters in their fields. No references, no interview.” Wei Wuxian felt frustration well up in him, especially at the reminder that Lan Wangji didn’t see him as a cultivator. No one would, in his current condition. Why would they? He didn’t have a functional core, which was the main scale against which all cultivation efforts were measured. He thought he had done a good job of not getting his hopes up about the teaching position, but the suffocating feeling constricting his chest was calling him out for being a liar. He should have known better. Why did he never learn? Some people had luck on their said, but Wei Wuxian had never been one of them. “Right. Of course. Because it would be impossible for someone who wasn’t born to the fucking clan nobility to ever actually be good at something, and the cost of taking the mastery test makes sure that other people can’t do it!” Lan Wangji’s lips parted slightly, like he might say something, but his expression was as opaque and emotionless as before. Wei Wuxian didn’t need to sit around and listen to him defend the clan system. “Good to know that the Lan are just the same as all the other sects,” Wei Wuxian continued, his lips twisting into a sarcastic smile. “Thanks for making that clear.”
pov alternating, modern setting, modern with magic, yu ziyuan being an asshole, dysfunctional jiang family, jiang family bashing, canon divergence, golden core reveal, burial mounds ensemble as family, golden core transfer, golden core transfer fix-it, top lan wangji/bottom wei wuxian, dual cultivation, strangers to lovers, misunderstandings, meet ugly, families of choice, hurt/comfort, emotional hurt/comfort

Something that I like about the golden core reveal, and like how MXTX handle, is that it is not WWX who talk about it. And I like LWJ's reaction too, he's not looking for consolation, at least not on WWX. Many times, when faced with a traumatic event, the person is forced to relive it to tell it, to be "honest" and this is re-victimize that person, the spaces for those who have suffered trauma to talk about it must be respected and not being forced to talk about it. I'm not really sure how feel with WN talk about it in rage, but WWX was not angry so, he has the last word.
Many fics force WWX to reveal the golden core, my view on this is quite contrary to JC stans. I think JC wanted a core, he got it through a favor from WWX's mother, what bothers him later is that it is WWX's core (and I do not deny the trauma associated with torture, because Wen Chao whipped him and WZ melted his golden core).
On the other hand, for WWX, regardless it is voluntary, the surgery is a trauma, emotional and physical. 2 days and one night, conscious while his golden core was ripped out, he willingly exposed himself to something torturous (The trauma for Wen Qing doing that operation too, Wen Ning probably holding and watching WWX suffer).
And then he was thrown into the burial mounds, really? I think it is cruel to force him to talk about it, even more so when he does not recognize his suffering.
As a survivor, I understand the desire to deny what happened, not accept that something happened or deny that it hurts, because the moment you accept that pain it becomes real, there are processes and forcing someone without preparation to talk about it is cruel.
On the other hand, I really appreciate LWJ's reaction when he found out, because although he is upset and it is obvious, if we see someone we love suffer it hurts us. But seeking refuge in someone who is suffering is not right, we can turn to someone else with our pain, or wait until that person is stable enough and grieve together. If someone tells you their pain, we cannot ask that same person to comfort us, it does not mean keeping that pain, but looking for the right moment and support to deal with it.

In a previous post of mine, I talked about Jiang Cheng's insecurity surrounding the Golden Core and how that anxiety is built around the fact that there are no more miracles for him. And I wanted to talk about miracles in the MDZS universe and also why I adore the way Wei Wuxian is written as a protagonist.
Jiang Cheng receiving a new Golden Core in place of his melted one is held up as a miracle in the narrative, until the truth behind it is eventually revealed. And we very easily buy into this miracle, because... well, Wei Wuxian is the Protagonist, isn't he? He is an orphan son of the disciple of the only named immortal in the entire novel universe and surely that plays a role! A protagonist has an inheritance, a prophecy, a special weapon - something that inherently gives them an edge, something to pull out of their arsenal when all seems lost.
So when Wei Wuxian solves the issue of Jiang Cheng's lost Golden Core by calling on a promised gift from his mother's immortal master, it does not seem far fetched or even too unbelievable. But the very act of it, is framed as a miracle by the writing style - the anonymity, Jiang Cheng taking Wei Wuxian's name and essentially his birthright, the secrecy and mysteriousness that surrounds the entire scene. Just look at this line from the novel,
BaoShan SanRen, a legendary celestial who had lived for hundreds of years, a secluded master who was said to be able to revive the dead, give flesh to bones!
So, we are led to believe that this is the purpose of Wei Wuxian's birth identity - the connection to the mysterious immortal we never meet. The Protagonist's past comes into the play and saves the day - or so we are led to believe.
The second reason why the miracle does not come across as unbelievable, is due to the Yi City arc, wherein we meet two characters who had a pretty similar encounter as Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng. We know - even before we know about Lotus Pier's fall and Jiang Cheng losing his Core - of how Xiao Xingchen begged his master for a miracle, to return Song Zichen his eyes.
However, while the narrative is building for us the belief that Jiang Cheng getting a new Core is not impossible, Yi City also simultaneously shows us that even miracles from immortals come at a price. Xiao Xingchen does not get Song Zichen a new pair of eyes - he essentially offers his own. So even then, we know that miracles are not that easy of a fix as we think them to be.
Nevertheless, the miracle that Wei Wuxian calls upon is essentially pushed to the back of our minds as the plot unravels - and right up to the Second Siege, we don't pay it much mind. But then, the Core Reveal happens, and everything comes crashing.
The core of the miracles in MDZS universe, is that miracles don't exist and fix things for us - the only thing we can do, is create those miracles for ourselves. The Protagonist with the mysterious bloodline is an irrelevant trope to define Wei Wuxian, because it does not lend anything to him - he has no miracles in his arsenal, only his own wit and mind. And that is what he does. He creates the miracle for Jiang Cheng, and that miracle comes at a tremendous price.
But it is also at the very soul of who Wei Wuxian is as a character and a person - he is defined by his brilliance and his refusal to let tragedy frame the way he lives his life. He does not have miracles waiting for him to call upon - but he damn well will create them.
This trope about the miracle also ties into his invention of the ghost path. It's not this special, secret knowledge passed down by a powerful predecessor ( in novel canon that is ) - it is a path he creates in a pure bid to survive the unsurvivable. He is in a place that should have meant both painful death and no peace for his soul, even if he had the advantage of a golden core - and he takes what he is handed, and creates a new path of cultivation.
Wei Wuxian as a protagonist is characterized by how active he is in his choices and decisions - he is not someone who just was 'special' because of bloodline or prophecy. He earns every bit of his power, and he exemplifies the kind of protagonist who chooses his destiny and is never handed anything on a platter - in fact, his social status in the MDZS universe dictates that he will forever be 'son of a servant' as far as they are concerned. However, this lack of privileges and miracles does not bother Wei Wuxian, nor does it deter him - He is still the Master of the Six Arts. He is still one of the most powerful cultivators of his generation. He is a genius who invented his own path of cultivation. His theories changed how night hunting worked. His inventions were prized and enviously sought. And every bit of that is a result of the hard work and dedication he put into himself - not a miracle.

A different golden core scenario…
I happened to read 2 different fics in which Wei Wuxian is cursed with having to tell the truth and of course, in the more gut-wrenching one, the truth that has to come out is the reason for his poor health/performance (the other deals with his love for Lan Wangji, as you might expect). During the recriminations of the Big Reveal, when per canon Jiang Cheng does not Take It Very Well, Jiang Yanli (pre-marriage, alt-she lives?) in anguish says that she would have done the same if she had known this was an option, given the chance.
This got me thinking; what would be the outcome if she had been the one to offer her core because A) she’s his older sister, B) while she’s not a strong cultivator she has a core and she is a Jiang, so it should be a Jiang core in him as he takes charge of the sect, C) she’s going to get married so who cares if she’s ‘mediocre’?
No question that, given the option, she would make that choice in a heartbeat. And, as the older sister she could talk Wei Wuxian out of him doing it. But, the real question for me is: how would her core perform in Jiang Cheng? What if he’s got a low-grade core (Wow, thank you, Baoshan Sanren, for your hard work [insert sarcastic tone]) and never really excels and is bitter that he’s not able to come close to Wei Wuxian’s performance? Or, does he somehow make it perform at a higher level, but he’s still the same sour grape as before? Let’s even consider core rejection for laughs.
And for bonus points, what if that 50% success rate did not work in her favor and she doesn’t make it through the surgery? And it’s Jiang Cheng who ‘caused’ her death? What then at the reveal? Yes, insanity in his future I’m thinking, regardless of the pro/con of the new core outcomes.
Anyone want to take this premise and run with it, be my guest!

I don't really like fics, where the revelation of wwx not having a golden core when he created demonic cultivation fixes everything. Like, it doesn't really matter? I belive he would have created it anyway, when wc pushed him into bm.
And i don't like fics, where sunshot c. wins the war without wwx cultivation either. It's called grand master of demonic cultivation for a reason, right?
When i am on the subject, anyone have a rec on good long Fic?

LWJ: didn't you have a golden core?
WWX: ah, haha, I don't know what you're talking about
LWJ: you did, it was spinning like anything. what happened to it?
WWX: I...<tiny voice>gave it away
LWJ: You GAVE it AWAY?

Heart of hearts
by apathyinreverie (@apathyinreverie)
M, WIP, Series, 23k, Wangxian
Summary: It won't be until several days later that Wangji will know to be grateful for Jiang Wanyin’s insistence to split up in their search. (Or, JC and LWJ spend those months searching separately and LWJ ends up finding Wei Ying a little earlier. Wei Ying who doesn’t remember anything beyond his own name. So, LWJ takes his chance and takes Wei Ying home. To Gusu.) Kay's comments: AO3 user apathyinreverie has done it again and left me absolutely devaststed. When I originally bookmarked this, it wasn't a series yet and more of a WIP (?) but now, a second work has been posted and it's probably going to be finished soon. I love this start to a canon divergence, where Lan Wangji is the one who finds Wei Wuxian after his time in the Burial Mounds, without Jiang Cheng being there and with Wei Wuxian suffering from memory loss. As devastating as it is, Lan Wangji gets to see the full extent of the hurt Wei Wuxian suffered in the Burial Mounds and also gets to be beside him before he managed to build his walls up again. Really loved this, so heart-breaking, so soft. Excerpt: Wei Ying. Wei Ying is here. Alive. Wei Ying who looks terrified of him. Wei Ying who drips resentment as though oversaturated. Wei Ying who looks barely present but still, somehow, desperately unbroken. “Wei Ying,” Wangji breathes, aching at the terror swimming in his zhiji’s eyes. There is the slightest falter in Wei Ying’s posture at the sound of his name, a sudden uncertainty in his eyes, dragging to focus quickly on Wangji’s hand that had so briefly lingered against his shoulder, as though uncertain whether what he felt might have been real. “Wei Ying,” Wangji repeats, desperate and joyous and devastated at the state he is in. He watches Wei Ying’s grip on the blackened flute loosening, the dark swirls of energy around his feet calming slightly. There is silence, a careful sort of quiet as neither of them speaks. “You know me?” Wei Ying finally asks, voice roughened in a way that speaks of no words spoken for months and entire weeks spent screaming at the same time, a helpless uncertainty vibrating within. There is no recognition in Wei Ying’s eyes. As though Wangji were a stranger. “You’re real?” he adds carefully, softly, breaking Wangji’s heart further.
pov lan wangji, canon divergence, not cultivation world friendly, memory loss, amnesia, hurt wei wuxian, possessive lan wangji, protective lan wangji, domestic lan wangji/wei wuxian, caring lan wangji, caring, bathing/washing, golden core reveal, golden core transfer fix-it, wei wuxian goes to gusu, sunshot campaign, wei wuxian's three months in the burial mounds, hurt/comfort, wei wuxian has ptsd

He's not as bad as he seemed to be - Chapter 5 - here we go
Jiang Cheng left the conference hall at a brisk pace, nodding courteously to several sect leaders who seemed to want to gain his attention, but didn’t stop to speak with any of them. He was much too agitated, still disbelieving what he just did. He might have either doomed the Jiang sect or saved it. Opposing Jin Guangshan in such a public setting is never a safe move, especially with possible marriage alliance brewing slowly between a-jie and the Peacock. They started corresponding lately through Madam Jin, but he was suspecting Jin Zixuan was finally opening his eyes to how wonderful and precious his sister really is.
He decided that blowing off some steam at the training grounds would be a good idea. He had to get rid of the pent-up energy. Jiang Cheng hated those conferences with a passion. He was one for action not sitting down and politicking. Give him a good night hunt, disciple training, even solo training for that matter would be much more preferable to this drag.
I wonder where Wei Wuxian disappeared to , thought Jiang Cheng, heading towards old Lan training grounds. Knowing him, he’s probably keeping to the little used routes to avoid the judging eyes of the crowd. With my luck he’ll be somewhere around the training grounds, wreaking havoc and disturbing Lan juniors. Or maybe not.
Training grounds were at the edge of the settlement, far away enough that any training session including clashing swords wouldn’t disturb the serenity of the place and give the residents relative peace. Last time Jaing Cheng was there, he was still a student at Cloud Recesses. Although a quick tour of the completed and still ongoing renovations he was provided after his arrival confirmed their placement in the same spot, he didn’t really pay attention to the state of them.
Taking a longer, more twisted route to find his wayward brother, Jiang Cheng found himself at the back of the healing pavilion. Suddenly, an ominous feeling descended upon him, goose bumps rising on his arms and the nape of his neck. He heard the voices coming from one of the windows. People were clearly arguing, if you can call it an argument, considering he was currently at the Cloud Recesses. What caught his attention though was that one of the voices belonged to Wei Wuxian.
What did he get himself into now , Jiang Cheng thought resigned. Deciding to find out what was going on before he storms in, he sneaked closer to the window, taking a peek of who exactly was in the room. He nearly sold himself out, his eyes close to falling out of his sockets seeing Lan Qiren, Lan Xichen and a Lan healer standing on one side of the bed occupied by faint-looking Wei Wuxian, whose hand was held by none other than the Second Jade, Lan Wangji.
Lan Qiren looked tired and resigned, the healer stood firm with slightly offended spark in his eyes, however, it was the look on Lan Xichen’s face that was the most disturbing. Pale and disbelieving, looking almost in shock, shaking his head slightly and clearly controlling his breathing as if trying not to lose his composure, the Lan Sect Leader was listening to the healer’s explanation.
Then Jiang Cheng started to pay attention to what was said...
“...have developed my techniques for years, Sect Leader, and perfected them when you were still a child. There is no possibility of a mistake. He really went through several phases of starvation and low nutrition during his life, multiple broken bones and whippings, and considering the damage from the fall into the Burial Mounds it is a miracle he is still alive. And I am certain, his core was not melted, but surgically removed.”
~~~
Wei Wuxian was resting in bed after drinking an awful concoction aimed to decrease his dizziness and invigorate him, when Lan Qiren returned with his older nephew. Lan Xichen looked mildly surprised seeing him in Lan healing pavilion.
“Young master Wei, is everything alright?”
“Sect leader Lan,” he nodded his head, “forgive me for not greeting you properly. I would gladly bow, but I was forbidden from moving off of the bed,” he said, looking accusatorily at Lan Zhan and the Lan head healer.
“Wei Ying needs rest,” said Lan Zhan.
“Wangji is right, young master Wei needs all the rest he can get,” confirmed Lan Liangchen, looking at his sect leader.
“It is fine, young master Wei. If my head healer says you are in no condition to stand on ceremony, I will not hold it against you,” Lan Xichen looked back to his shufu and Lan daifu. “What happened?”
“It is of utmost importance, Xichen, that whatever you hear in this room will not get out of it,” Lan Qiren warned his nephew. After getting an agreeing nod, he continued, “young master Wei bumped into me this afternoon, and since there was something I wanted to talk to him about, I have invited him to my office.”
“More like demanded to follow you, xiansheng,” retorted Wei Wuxian with a sneer.
“’Do not disrespect the elder’, ’Sneering for no reason is prohibited’.”
“I am not one of your sect’s disciples xiansheng”
“Yet, like I told you earlier, I was your teacher once, therefore I am forever your teacher. Now stay quiet and let me explain the situation without unnecessary interruptions,” said Lan Qiren to Wei Wuxian, then, turning to Lan Xichen, he continued. “Like I mentioned, I invited young master Wei to my office to confront him about his unorthodox cultivation. I am aware you were not informed about certain things during the war, Xichen, and I had no opportunity to share some of the information not related to the clan and sect matters, as those were irrelevant at the time to the restoration efforts of Cloud Recesses. Now, however, there is no way of explaining the situation without passing my knowledge to you.
“During the first months of the Sunshot Campaign, shortly after Wei Wuxian joined the efforts, I was informed by one of my associates that Wen Chao and his retainers had thrown someone into the Burial Mounds. Unfortunately, I managed to associate this person with Wei Wuxian months after, when news of his new cultivation style and continuous refusals to carry his sword got to Cloud Recesses. Since Wen Zhuliu was Wen Chao’s bodyguard at the time, I assumed that his core has been lost to the Core Melting Hand. To my surprise, when I checked Wei Wuxian’s meridians...”
“By force,” interrupted Wei Wuxian. Judging by Lan Xichen’s face, he could not decide whether to be horrified by the tale or amused by the bickering.
“’Do not interrupt.’ I already apologised, now let me finish. When I checked Wei Wuxian’s meridians, they were whole, but there was no golden core in his lower dentian.”
If he could pull it off, Lan Xichen’s eyebrows would travel straight to his hairline, they were so high in astonishment and disbelieve.
“How is it possible? I have checked the meridians of many of Wen Zhuliu’s victims and every time the meridians were damaged beyond repair,” said the First Jade, getting paler by the minute.
“There is a surgery, a very old one, allowing the transfer of a golden core from the donor to the recipient,” explained Lan Liangchen. “There are only few copies of it left, as it was used for nefarious purposes one too many times. Most of the copies were destroyed, however, one of them is in the Forbidden Section of our library.”
“There’s Forbidden Section?” asked Wei Wuxian, trying to distract them from the topic of his golden core, and partially out of curiosity.
“Yes. Will take Wei Ying when he feels better,” said Lan Zhan.
“Wangji, not now,” scolded Lan Qiren
“Yes, shufu.”
“Are you certain Lan daifu? There must be another explanation.”
“I am certain, Xichen. I have run a full diagnostic on him. The state of his body is truly atrocious, considering he was raised in one of the major sects. Malnutrition since he was about 5 till 9 th year of life, multiple broken and/or bruised bones, whip scars, low nutrition periods... I am full of wonder that he even survived. Then the Burial Mounds; his body was in pure agony, there are still bones and organs that have not finished healing and are clearly thwarted from doing so by the amount of resentful energy stored in his meridians. I would dare to assume it was keeping him alive at one point and he never thought of actually cleansing himself of it to finish healing.”
“I couldn’t,” said Wei Wuxian rebelliously. “How else would I be able to protect Yunmeng Jiang? We lost everything in the Wen attack, only handful of us left. Jiang Cheng was only 17 when he lost his parents and became sect leader; and recruiting during Sunshot only gave us so much. He had to rebuild the sect and Lotus Pier basically from scratch, with only war spoils to finance everything. He was excluded from the sworn brotherhood, left only at the mercy of Jin Guangshan, constantly resisting his nagging about shijie’s marriage to his peacock of a son. I had to have a way to protect the sect...” his speech was interrupted by a sudden coughing fit.
Lan Zhan reacted quickly, helping him sit up, calm down and drink some water. He looked at his fellow Lans with reproach.
Oh Lan Zhan, guarding me even from uncharitable thoughts.
“Thank you, Lan Zhan,” he said out loud, lying back down.
The remaining Lan trio was speechless for a minute. Lan Qiren looked mildly disturbed; Lan head healer was deep in thought, while Lan Xichen was fighting an internal war.
Hearing the truth for once hurts, doesn’t it? thought Wei Wuxian. Keeping his brother out of a major sect alliance was a thorn in his side for a long time. He was blaming himself for it. Because why would anyone want an alliance with a sect having a demonic cultivator in their midst, even if said demonic cultivator helped win the war.
“It was never my intension to keep Jiang Wanyin out of the alliance,” said Lan Xichen in a daze. “I only wanted Nie Mingjue and Meng Yao to stop fighting and start trusting each other again.”
“It is not important now, Xichen, we can get back to this issue at a later time. Let us focus on the matter at hand,” Lan Qiren interjected. “As I was saying, Wei Wuxian’s golden core was not melted, which means it had to be surgically removed. Lan Liangchen could think of only one other surgeon capable of performing this surgery.”
“That is why you asked for Wen Qing and her branch,” Lan Xichen realised, eyes wide open in understanding. His face was pale, breath clearly controlled as if not to lose himself in today’s revelations. He started shaking his head slightly as if to clear his thoughts. Sect leader Lan looked back to the head healer.
“Lan daifu, are you certain there was no mistake in your diagnosis? Are you sure your techniques gave you accurate reading?”
I really wouldn’t question a head healer if I were you, thought Wei Wuxian, seeing the offended spark that flashed in Lan Liangchen’s eyes. He tried it once with Jiang head healer before the fall of Lotus Pier. He will never forget being paralysed from his neck down for the whole of the treatment after one of Madam Yu’s punishments, and then some until he was begging Jiang daifu for forgiveness. He has goose bumps to this day just remembering it.
“I am more than certain. I have developed my techniques for years, Sect Leader, and perfected them when you were still a child. There is no possibility of a mistake. He really went through several phases of starvation and low nutrition during his life, multiple broken bones and whippings, and considering the damage from the fall into the Burial Mounds it is a miracle he is still alive. And I am certain, his core was not melted, but surgically removed.”
“So, we need to bring Wen Qing to the Cloud Recesses to find out what kind of experiments were young master Wei put through?”
“I said already, I was not experimented on. Why are you not listening?”
“Will you tell us then why Wen Qing performed the surgery?”
Loud bang of the door sliding unexpectedly open was the only thing alerting the occupants of the room of the newcomer.
“Tell me, Wei Wuxian, what exactly happed your golden core?!”
“Shit.”
Wen Qing as ghost general.
It's alright, even my heart fluttered but imagine how different the plot would get, ohhh and golden core reveal scene, and how she'll be able to save more lives with her medicine and knowledge (because she'll live, kinda ), how it'll politically make it difficult for people to fear and hate the ghost general who treats people as well, the possibilities are endless.
Maybe they'll get a grip to shut up Jin clan because their sect leader is dying of illness (shush) and they need their help because she's best in her job (even if her corpse fingers are stiff to perform surgery, her knowledge is priceless), and the hundred hole curse thing as well, like she successfully performed a one of it's first and only golden core transfer surgery with her own knowledge alone in unsuitable environment, she's a mad woman. Damn.
All this would be difficult to attempt in canon because her life would very much be in mortal danger but as a ghost general, she can easily hand ass back roasted. Her knowledge and strength in exchange of her life (she burns to death, maybe the Jin clan were fearful of Wei Ying finding her corpse and turning her into a fierce corpse as well and how bad it would get for them because they acknowledge her talent and fierce personality)
Wen Ning would be eternal cinnamon roll who'll get to have memories with A-Yuan and maybe life would be a bit kinder to him with feared ghost general also well known doctor as old sis and the most powerful yilling patriarch keeping him safe from war, ofc few things can't be avoided but the possibilities.
