Suburban music videos: What's the deal?

Some of you may know that a couple of days ago I started a playlist of music videos from the 1990s and 2000s which all seem to be featured in or prominently feature American suburban areas. I forget what the actual post was that pointed this out, but I think I kind of had that idea before I saw it.

One of the first music videos I thought of was 'Rockin' the Suburbs' by Ben Folds from 2001, because not only does it explicitly mention a suburb, but the video is done in such a way that I think it was meant to poke fun at the angry white boy music that plagued the late 90's (Limp Bizkit, Korn, etc).

The other video I thought of was 'Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)' by the Offspring from 1998. Like RTS, it's meant to poke fun at middle-class white dudes who think they're hot shit because they listen to rap, when in reality they come off as cheesy wannabes. So it would make sense for the MV to have that setting.

The main trope these MVs have in common is that they both have the "haha 90s ironic edge" on them. Like it's very obvious that the songs are about how tough some dudes think they are, when really they live in a relatively safe and secure area. "Black Hole Sun" by Soundgarden did something similar in 1994, but I think that it has a completely different vibe to the others. More surrealism, less irony.

But I think the true golden era of the "suburban neighbourhood music video" was during the early to mid-2000's. With a rise in pop-punk and emo, comes a rise in angsty teens going "blehh!!! screw this place!!!! screw the establishment!!!!!! its not a phase mom!!!!!!", which then resulted in music videos featuring an environment they were probably most familiar with (and probably stuck in).

Here's '1985' by Bowling for Soup, released in 2004. The colour palette for this video is a lot more muted, which is (I find) a common link between most MVs in the 00's. Which gives a more "this is the way things actually are" vibe, compared to the much brighter palettes of the 90s.

'The Anthem' by Good Charlotte (2003) is quite possibly the most early-00's MV ever, and I consider it to be the definitive suburban neighbourhood music video. The song is about "not living the way you're meant to live" according to Joel Madden, and the video reflects that sentiment! Just a bunch of punk and emo kids going out and causing a ruckus, having a gay ol' time.

It also has this weird blue/greenish filter on it, which is very indicative of its period. That's a whole other story.

The suburban neighbourhood continued to thrive in music videos throughout the 00's, mainly in pop-punk and emo. I believe this was an attempt to target its demographic; adolescents aged 14-19 who had yet to find their place in the world. Some notable MVs include 'You're Going Down' by Sick Puppies (2009), 'Only One' by Yellowcard (2003), and 'Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground' by the White Stripes (2002).

(side-note: michel gondry, director of the white stripes vid, never misses when it comes to his music videos. this is one of my favourite music videos ever, but it definitely isn't one of my favourite suburban music videos ever.)

SNMVs began to go out of style around the early 2010s, presumably along with pop punk and emo. The closest to it would be 'I Sold My Bed, But Not My Stereo' by Capital Cities, which came out in 2014. It's very much of a more nostalgic style compared to the others, but it's most likely one of the last of the SNMVs.

So: Does this specific sub-genre of MV mean anything?

I think individually the videos definitely represent and reflect certain zeitgeists of their eras, but the SNMV is very much rooted in adolescent angst. That feeling that while you are living comfortably, there's definitely something more. Boredom is present in every teenager, and these videos are like a fantasy for them: getting to live out your days without responsibility with your friends, but are suppressed of having any fun because of the 'system' at large.

It was an interesting read and everything you said made a lot of sense!

I feel really disappointed with the direction jungkook's taking tbh. His album and solo projects were the ones I was looking forward to the most since the second bts announced their hiatus and the fact that they were all going to release solo projects.

But now it's less than a month before his album debut and I'm hardly looking forward to it at all, because none of it seems to be the kind of music I could vibe with (even though his solo songs under the bts label were my favourites lol. I recognise that's a me problem but it does feel like outside of twitter a lot of people feel this way, more so than with the other members' solo works).

That might change once we receive the name of the tracks and the features and stuff, but we'll see.

Also, I think releasing 3D was honestly a bad idea because of the timing. Seven was (and is still) doing REALLY well. Super catchy, most people loved it, and it WAS new and unexpected. but the focus shifted a bit to 3D, except not everyone focused on the main version, and you can tell it's not gonna be as big of a hit.

You also mentioned on another post how the concept photos for golden appear to be very similar to seven and 3D and I can't agree more.

When you do the same thing more than once in a short period of time in a row, the hype becomes a little less because the surprise/anticipation factor is less, y'know?

Idk, I'm aware Jungkook was chilling and enjoying his break (and good for him) but that did mean he got less time to release a lot of content, so the whole idea of trying to release 2 big singles and then an album in 5 months doesn't seem like a good idea.

and then released his album 5 months later with a slightly different vibe. Because now by the time 3D will become more accepted and more known by the general public, his album will release and the focus will be on the title track.

The timing and really everything surrounding 3D was bad all round (except for the alternate version and the performance for that because I agree it was 100 times much better)

No, you aren't being too negative! If you are, I am too, and you're being more positive than me! The timing with 3D did suck. If you just think of it as a "gift" for the fans who were waiting for more music, then it didn't suck. From a business perspective, it wasn't the best move. The main issue was really the feature imo (though 3D's sound was never going to make a splash). Had 3D been announced as a solo, there would've been some of that shock/surprise factor and a lot more anticipation since we're all waiting for a real solo release. That would've been something to look forward to and to generate hype. A better MV would've helped too. At least 3D is kinda helping Seven in the charts...? It's gone number 1 on Spotify Global twice ever since 3D came out haha.

I'm really hoping that the album will surprise me! Tbh, boring concept photos are a BTS thing. It probably doesn't just happen to them, but I think Dynamite and Butter were the last eras to have exciting promo pics that had everyone talking about them. The concept/promo pics for Proof, for example, were super boring imo. I didn't even care for Jimin's Face promo pics and I remember a lot of people liking them. I don't think Big Hit is the best when it comes to that.

vidéo therapy is also one of my fave b-sides (I loved it as soon as I heard that instrumental in the opening I was like "oh yeah she's a fave")! as for lyrics I really love the moonshot lyrics - especially that if you wanna change be not afraid part, it's so uplifting, it feels almost like a rallying chant -, seunghyub rap in video therapy, i also love how the opening line of like a flower sound (i like the general theme of that song but I specifically like how that line sounds in korean lol) also on a more fun side, the main line of I like you, "I'm doomed! also random question that I just thought of but when a new album comes out do you like listening to teasers and highlights previews or do you wait until the day? do you read the lyrics (and the translation) as soon as they're out? do you watch the mv before listening to the album or the other way around? it can be different for different artists but I tend to go : no listening teasers + mv first then album at once when I'm at home (+ sometimes lyrics/translation of my fave songs after a few days - there are a lot songs that I've not yet checked the translation of, I'm going with pure vibes)

haha yes, i do like a lot of bands and groups - but i only closely follow/buy merch and albums for a handful of them (being a multi-stan is a bit heavy on the wallet 🥲). i noticed that i do tend to gravitate more towards bands tho! that's probably because i listened to a lot of pop-rock bands/songs growing up.

n.flying recently became one of my fave bands, but my other fave ones are onewe, lucy, and hoppipolla 🥰 and my top fave groups are seventeen, golden child, and verivery!

Punk for the values, emo for the mid-00s music, goth for the aesthetic (attraction). My personal style is unfortunately none of these. I’m very soft femme or sports gay. I’ve moved away from nerd girl chic thank god.

grand theft autumn/where is your boy: which was the first fall out boy song you heard and liked?

It’s either Dance Dance or Thnks fr th Mmrs way back when IOH first came out and FOB was a band my sister liked instead of anyone I listened to on my own. I know those were the only two songs I had on itunes before I got obsessed. My Songs was also getting a ton of radio play my senior year of high school that I liked but didn’t link that to the band. I think the first “Yes!” song when I was getting obsessed with them on my own was Phoenix. I’m still a lot obsessed with Phoenix.

It really depends on what my mood is. I’m rarely ever just angry. If I’m angry and want to stew, usually I’m Not Okay (I Promise) is the right mood. If I’m angry and sad I’ve got a handful of playlists that help me deal with it. Most of the time I just put shuffle on and hit skip until the vibes are right.

It depends on the mood I’m in tbh. Also what does this mean by upbeat? Some of their most emotional songs have the fastest tempos. The only ones I can think of that are emotional and slow are What A Catch Donnie and The Kids Aren’t Alright. The band is very good at being loud while hurting. So I guess upbeat.

I was absolutely the only girl in the group of nerds. God five years ago I was going into my senior year of college. I’d probably tell her that she has time to figure it all out. There is no way to make the one right decision that will make everything perfect from now until eternity and she shouldn’t try but for G-d’s sake do something nothing is not an acceptable choice. SPANISH 2000S MUSICAL SCENE

Okay, not to be a boomer, but I really think the 2000s were the golden age of modern Spanish music, and I wanted to make a post where I could show y'all some of the groups and hits from that era! Pereza was THE rock group in the 2000s, they were like the personification of being cool. I like to compare them to The Killers, because their songs are catchy as hell and still played on the radio. They dissolved in 2012 and both of the members started solo careers and are still mildly successful, they've each released absolute bops. Todo (Everything) is one of their most sexual songs, as you could imagine from the MV, and also one of their most popular ones - not the most well-known one tho. If you've followed me for a while you know how much I love this group, it was everything and I believe it's the best Spanish group ever, like full stop. They have dozens of hits everyone knows (LODVG musical when????) like this one, and yeah, they're the best. Also, they're still going strong which is great! Rosas (Roses) talks about heartache and remembrance - a common theme in their songs, and it's a very dear and beloved song by many, it's also used in memes as a substitute of the "all around me are familiar faces" song lol

EL CANTO DEL LOCO

El Canto del Loco my beloved <3 Fun fact, they were my first favourite band ever. Anyways, they embodied the barrio culture and style, and were one of the few groups closer to rock music, which granted them a lot of fans; I like to think of them as like the Spanish Green Day. Their songs were amazing, fast paced, and what we would call canalla (punk?), they were the best. Anyways, they separated in 2010, although there's a rumour of a reunion this year 👀. Insoportable (Unbearable) is one of their many iconic songs, and it's about a toxic relationship.

Amaral gave us EVERYTHING and we disrespected them in return! Like I feel we don't talk about them enough with all the bops they gave us that are songs everyone knows and loves and goes crazy when they sound. Anyways, they are still going on and I love that for them. This song, El universo sobre mí (The universe upon me) is probably its more well-known song, and it talks about not fitting in, struggling with it, the apathy that stems from it, etc. I love that a song with such important and deep-cutting lyrics as this one was like on top of the top 40 list and still receives massive radio-play nowadays.

MELENDI

Oh, Melendi. Okay, I'll start with this; Melendi is still a very popular mainstream singer nowadays, although his style and music has changed A LOT. A lot of people prefer this first stage, where he had lots of bops. The thing is, this Melendi was a known drug addict, abused drugs and even had weed in his logo ffs. Some people even say he shouldn't have stopped doing drugs because he makes worse music now, which is just horrible, and like, not true? I agree that his current music is... not the best, but he seems happy, and songs like Barbie de Extrarradio, Lágrimas Desordenadas, Tu Jardín Con Enanitos, etc are still fucking bops. Anyways, in this first era he sung rumba, a subgenre of flamenco very popular during the 2000s. Un Violinista En Tu Tejado (A Fiddler On Your Roof) is one of his most well-known songs from this time, and it talks about a toxic relationship.

PIGNOISE

Pignoise were the closest thing we got to anglo punk / pop punk and I'm so grateful for them, their songs were angsty and fast and everything honestly. They are still active, and Estoy Enfermo (I'm Sick) is probably one of their most well-known songs, it's your standard angsty song, and as you can see, it features Melendi!

DESPISTAOS

Despistaos was another rock-ish group, and they released some amazing songs like this one. They are associated to THE teen show in the 2000s, Física o Química, as they did the opening song (with the same name as the show) and I'm pretty sure this song, Cada dos minutos (Every two minutes) also featured there. This specific song is about heartache and missing someone, pretty standard stuff lol. Also, the group is still active so yay!

DAVID BISBAL

If you follow me you'll most certainly have heard of OT (Operación Triunfo), a Spanish song contest (a mix between The Voice and Big Brother more or less). Well, the first edition of OT took place in 2001, and David Bisbal was one of the contestants, ending up as the runner up and becoming an icon for the years to come. He has so many bops its unreal, and given his... as you can see, intense personality, he's become kind of a meme in recent years. Idk I love him he's the best. Also, he's had a stellar career, he's collabed with at least Rihanna and Miley Cyrus, has 3 Latin Grammys, and is still going strong. This song, Esclavo De Sus Besos (Slave Of Her Kisses) is your standard heartache song.

EL SUEÑO DE MORFEO

With El Sueño de Morfeo we complete the golden trio of women-fronted bands in the 2000s along with La Oreja de Van Gogh and Amaral. They made a bunch of bops that mixed pop with traditional folk Asturian music, and even went on to compete in Eurovision! They broke up in 2013 tho :( Anyways, Esta Soy Yo (This Is Me) is, like the name suggests, a presentation song about someone, with its flaws and all.

I HAD TO END THIS WITH THEM. If I had to resume the 2000s in a band / artist, it would be them. Estopa was the 2000s. They make Catalan rumba music, and everyone loves them. Seriously, I don't think there's a single Spaniard who despises them, we'd all die for them. And I personally love how down-to-earth they are, they are probably millionaires at this point and they still dress the same, live in their hometown, and are genuinely nice people. They were on a hiatus until a couple of years ago and their quality hasn't suffered a bit, it's amazing. Anyways, Partiendo La Pana (literally translates to "cutting the corduroy", it's a Spanish expression, it could translate to Being Cool or something like that) tells a Western-like event that happened in a bar on their hometown.

I find my own responses to Harry's music really interesting, probably more so than with any other artist. I usually come to an artist through their music, so it's the song itself that draws me in, whereas with Harry, particularly now, I'm drawn to him first. I love the lyrics and MV for As It Was, but I am not that hooked on the sound, although that may change over time. For HS1, there are songs I still skip, and it took me a while to get into Fine Line (the album). I remember when Golden was released, my first thought was 'how can this possibly be a single?', but now it's one of my favourite tracks. I'd maybe listened to TPWK a handful of times and then became obsessed with it after the MV came out and if someone played Cherry for me, I think I'd struggle to recognise it. Funnily enough, Fine Line (the song) just didn't resonate with me at all until I heard it live, and now I'd say it's in my top 3 Harry songs. I don't have a question here, but I was just thinking about how my connection to his songs (lyrics, visuals, music - both recorded and live), and to him as an artist, have changed over time. I find it interesting that I engage with him and his music on so many different levels and I really like it.

I don't think it's just you - I think there's a lot of evidence that people are drawn to Harry first and his music follows. It's certainly the wisdom in pop music discussion circles. It's expressed in different ways Jon Caramanica's 'liking Harry Styles music is a symptom of liking Harry Styles music', or the different ways people say that Harry's self expression is more interesting than his music. If you read the recent (five star) Guardian Review the paragraphs discussing his style come before any mention of the music.

While obviously some of this is meant as a diss (although not all) I don't think it has to be understood that way. The fact that Harry and his team (particularly Harry L obviously) are incredibly good at what they do. The fact that the images he puts forward are so compelling does not lessen the quality of the music.

If I was going to explain it - I'd say people find him compelling so they give the music more chances - like you did hear. One of the things about music is that the way we relate to it is really complicated and often the more often we hear a song the more likely we are to connect. I really like that you put this forward as engaging with him and his music on lots of levels and I agree.

10. LALALILALA - APRIL

It's just such a good song! It's so catchy and full and has such a fun vibe. The bells and twinkles mixed with the harsher mid range gives it a unique sound and then the vocal line is so pretty it stands out even amongst the loud production. A fun little bop!

9. ON - BTS

Nothing for me has passed DNA for bangtan titles until maybe this. It's epic it's incredible. It has such a huge message that travels into the sound itself. We always love a good marching band but they made it sound inherently bangtan and that's just pretty cool

8. Turn Back Time - WayV

It just slaps y'all. It takes some of the elements that WayV have established in their sound from the orchestral + atmospheric sound to the harsh rock and blends them so well and follows Moonwalk without slacking at all. It's just epic! WayV are incredible

7. Criminal - Taemin

Lee Taemin at it again. I adore this song so much, it's so sleek and subtly powerful as only Taemin can do so well. The way it's so calm throughout until it hits that last chorus and we get his belt that adds so much to it. And it's even more incredible when he performs it live. Taemin God.

6. Break all the Rules - CRAVITY

Debut of the year! I love it so much. I'm not one to immediately get into rookie groups unless their debut is amazing and this is a heck of a debut seeing as it's on my list! The sound and production is very starship and Monsta x but it has this youthfulness in it and it's and modal bends and harmonies make it cheeky and interesting. And that DANCE BREAK oml

5. HOME;RUN - SEVENTEEN

Big band jazz ... as only Seventeen can do. It's so good it's so fun you just wanna dance to it. My favourite music video of the year!! And I think my favourite choreo too- I'm a sucker for theatre jazz. A bop and it shows off seventeens unique colour and sound so well!

4. ONE (Lucid Dream) - Golden Child

Okay everything about this song is great but JOOCHAN PRECHORUS. Sungyoon too but I'm biased<3 the production on this song is absolutely incredible and then they just strip everything for the prechorus and it's just beautiful vocals ahh. Stunning

3. LA DI DA - EVERGLOW

The 80s !! Probably my favourite 80s influenced song in this newtro wave it just slaps so hard. And then the synth instrumental kicks in for the break !! And the rising melody in that chorus is so good and it's so catchy and you're trying to reach those notes after just one listen. Just a bop!

2. Blue Hour - TXT

The feel-good-ness just radiates from this song in every way. The genre, the choreo, the styling, the bright melody lines. Just happiness in one little song !!

1. Back Door - Stray Kids

I really just think it's the height of what Stray Kids have become. It's filled with confidence, interesting mixes of sound, and just this whole giant feel to it. The swing feel throughout the whole song just makes it feel so big and theatric and epic. And that's enhanced in the big production mv and most notably the choreo because theres !! So many theatre and jazz steps in it it makes my theatre nerd self so happy.

Bulgaria brings a mentally reassuring anthem to Rotterdam 2021

I’ve said so that VICTORIA herself sort of agreed to have done “Tears Getting Sober” if she was allowed to, but for one I have to thank that EBU said that the artists can’t have their 2020 songs back? You’ll see why when I get to the review after two boring paragraphs of text with technical info, for the country that is Bulgaria!

ARTIST & ENTRY INFO

Victoria Georgieva (or VICTORIA, but I can’t be arsed to continuously capitalize her name so I’ll just say Victoria from now on) was born a singer, for she started to sing at the age 11, went to a specific school of angel voices (no really that’s what it was called), and tried to go to the X Factor while a liiiiiittle too young until realizing that she needed to wait for a few years, and wait a few years she did, and went on to the X Factor again.

She didn’t win, but she still got to sign a contract and sing some stuff in Bulgarian before she decided to rebrand, started singing in English, and completely decided that ballads is her style. She cannot really do upbeat most of the time. So you can’t really have a bop from her in the future. (Well except that there’s a couple of songs in her discography that I personally classify as “bops” but they’re more like... idek sad bops?? but they can be danced to, but I get her, she doesn’t do anything that’s more loud and upbeat and clubby and summery kind of - in short, nothing you can go “YAAASSSS QUEEEEEN” over to.)

The entry she ended up singing, “Growing Up Is Getting Old”, is what I can describe to be about overcoming the emotional twists and turns inside of you as you grow older, because as it turns out, it ain’t what you thought it would be - but if you push just a little further, you realize that if you’re growing up, maybe the life isn’t so bad, afterall - you are able to get up. Somehow. It was written as part of Boris-Milanov-led songwriting camp held during summer, and a lot of people seemed to be a part of it because multiple different folk have songwriting credits on the potential Bulgarian entries this year.

REVIEW

Let’s get this out of the way immediately. I prefer “Growing Up Is Getting Old” to “Tears Getting Sober”. The former sounds a lot less irritatingly underwhelming and a lot more positively overwhelming you with warm emotions and sunglow. “Tears Getting Sober” was a song I could never really connect with - maaaaybe the last chorus is much better on there, but it doesn’t do much for me either, I guess.

Their 2021 forray however is a much different kind of thing - once again, going for lyrical non-cliches, Victoria tells a tale about her inner turmoils and continuing in life, in a way that’s personal to her and also kind of relatable to all of us. We all have these moments of fear and anxiety and nervous systems aching. If only there was someone who’d tell us that we’re worth saving... thanks a lot Victoria, you’re the MVP. Filling in the void that Netherlands from last year had brought us but not anymore - another personal song about getting old and having those kind of feelings inside - and doing a great job at taking the baton in the right way (even with featuring the word “grow” in both of the titles, neat coincidence).

Not only the lyrics feel like a hug, the song just emulates ray of sunshine and golden glitter coming down from the sky, Molly Sanden style. The violins in the G major key playing so precisely, building up momentum throughout the entire song, slowly but surely - starting with the ticking clock in the first verse that may have subtle violin in there; and the first chorus is just so simple piano, and then the second chorus has a tinge of electronic something, and the last chorus goes full in with the backing vocals boosting the song, after Victoria performs the quite magnificent bridge... now I don’t have synesthesia but I associate music keys with colors, and to me G major would always come across as something yellow or orange - “Growing Up Is Getting Old” is a perfect example of why’s that for me. And obviously, Victoria’s love for harmony-humming (even if there’s just one instance of it after she sings “star crossed soul”) complements the song to a T.

And it turned out to be a much better choice than last year’s. Maybe finally a female ballad I am getting behind.

Now I wanna know why the bookies don’t appreciate THIS entry as much as last year?

Granted, now it’s 2021 and the environment is so much different, and the songs have changed, and the dynamics have changed, and now there’s suddenly more competition at stake. And for Bulgaria it fares quite much more underwhelmingly - well, at this moment they’re like 6th, which isn’t bad, but there’s a lack of sung praises coming its way, not quite a feat that “Tears Getting Sober” actually achieved, being the bookies fave right before the cancellation of last year. In general the year has been pretty dry for the previous winner picks like Iceland, Lithuania and this, but I can’t say that the previous winner bets from 2020 are all that dead either? Though I gotta say that Bulgaria wasn’t gonna win 2020 anyway, so it’s a lose-lose in this case.

Also I just can’t at that music video being a little dramatic at the beginning, with the cancellation of Eurovision being presented as if it were a worldwide disaster during which we all shall lock ourselves into bunkers and wait until the better days, eventhough the panini is not war and war supplies kit is not just enough to survive it. But it seems like that the world is quite literally falling apart, as evidenced by Victoria going through all kinds of pathways away from her living room, meeting a  (presumably) mini version of her somewhere in between, and literally surrounded by the shaking environment by the last moments of the song

before we realize it was just reality recursing from the TV’s point of view that Victoria was watching all along, and then she leaves the living room again, but in her world, everything is normal and she could just go wherever she wants by car. Even I can’t come up with a storyline ending that’s somewhat intertwined and all plot-twisty and more confusing than that. But props to her team I guess

Approval factor: Let’s say I somewhat approve this message. Follow-up factor: For the sake of argument let me just say that Bulgaria is moving on a great path, eventhough the former entry leaves me cold, at least the current entry keeps me warm at all times, like a cup of cocoa and a good blanket. Please Bulgaria, never run out of sponsors. Qualification factor: I’ve seen one or two people throw around the “surprise NQ��� tag for this song and I don’t get why??? There’s no way that the tense atmosphere of semifinal 2 would sure-fire-ly kill Bulgaria, even if they have a lot less chances to win this year than they had the last one. There can be some shock NQs indeed though, and if there are, I am paging... uhhhhh Finland? Idk why but you might see what I mean if I ever get around to reviewing “Dark Side”. Bulgaria? Never. It may not win the semi but it will cradle around the top 7 somehow.

INTERNAL NF CORNER

That’s right, Bulgaria managed to do both.

At the time when one other of Bulgaria’s songs got released, within the *Special* Eurovision September 1st-onwards range, people naturally succumbed to their primal instinct of asking whether that’s her Eurovision song... only for Vic to probably announce this early on that no, it’s just *one* of potential ESC entries she’s harbouring. And the remaining potential ones were all on her debut EP. Who actually got a more well-orchestrated schedule for everyone to follow, and yet, people were much more keen to cling on the first EP song out of the gate, “Imaginary Friend”. Now I get that the fans of that song were super upset at the revelation that IF is not going, but it is a technically strong song for the sake of being a technically strong song, and I don’t want to think that Victoria is only forced to choose the songs that can win for her, so she’s such a sweetheart for gravitating towards a song she could dearly care about. So props to her team saving the initial winner for last to be revealed, lol.

Though wasn’t her personal favourite a Billie-Eilish-lite-upbeat-kinda-track Phantom Pain?

Look, I know that favouring the only non-ballad in the whole lineup (well “Ugly Cry” is also not quite a ballad but its beat is kinda so-so, so I tend to ignore it) is kinda sus, also, y’all are sick to death to Billie Eilish comparisons, but I do believe that Billie would never be able to do an “Imaginary Friend” while Victoria could do a “Lovely”. This makes me remember the cover art of Billie’s debut album where she sits on her bed, dressed in white, and so is Victoria on this very MV, with strange shit going on behind her in the mirror. To the mirror, her reflection acts creepy, back again.

The other 2 I don’t feel like caring about enough, sure they got their cred, sure there’s one entry properly crediting Milanov (who seems to not have an actual entry this year that’s purely attributed to *him*, as opposed to 3 last year, 2 of which were performed by acts that returned this year????), sure there’s the funny thing about having a funeral song where out of this and Finland only Austria managed to send a quote unquote “funeral” song, but I think the funeral song would’ve sounded better if the pre-section of it on the “Phantom Pain” video was THE “funeral” song itself, and not whatever was that other funeral song.

In between there was a public sort of survey where people could submit feedback and positive words to Vic’s choices to help her decide - I didn’t get to vote but I feel fine with the winner eitherway, and that counts for something! And the end result was revealed at the very end of Victoria’s very own rooftop concert.

The colors on the circle thingy of this, they were meant to symbolize all Bulgarian entries up to Victoria’s 2nd one, in pictograms that kind of reminded me of Coldplay attributing every song on ‘Mylo Xyloto’ its own little symbol.

The concert was not only full of music and also adverts for the inaugural sponsor iCard (that also included some element of foreshadow in between the suspense, you’ll see why), but also the Bulgarian folk talking before each song, saying all the positive nice words they can for Vic; that she’s talented, and that they were so excited that Bulgaria was doing well in the odds last year prior to cancellation, bla bla bla... also some people were proud of voting for Bulgaria outside Bulgaia, and they made puns about the forthcoming songs on the concert that they were introducing, and so on, and there was also someone called Dara, whom I really want to be sent by Bulgaria one day to show off that they’re not afraid of doing trashy-esque bops that don’t necessarily win

Also they reminded me that Lucy from No Angels (aka the sole reason Bulgaria 12′d Germany in 2008) still exists.

There was also an intermission where Eurovision 2021 acts could say all the nice words to Victoria on their own part. And several artists chose to... how shall I put it... use up their several seconds rather interestingly. Like how The Roop would say something real quick only to delve into more of their usual “let’s dance, let’s discoteque! *hand scissors* ;P” self-promo, and Senhit carelessly being allowed to say whatever she wants in Italian without subtitles <3 Sorry sis, they’re only given to people from another white-green-red flag-color country.

About the iCard foreshadow... so there’s their advert about Victoria waiting in the line to get something in the Soft Vocals Store, and people ahead of her giving her money the standard oldfashioned way, and the old lady at the counter is... slow, to say the least. After a good amount of time spent waffling around, Victoria finally pulls out the iCard application and pays for the imaginary items she wants, then narrates some stuff about said application, and a Eurovision entry of hers plays when the old lady is at home, spending time in front of TV enjoying the music. Before the concert, the song that played was “Tears Getting Sober”. The advert played once more before Victoria’s big entry decision and entry MV reveal, and in place of the 2020 entry, “Growing Up Is Getting Old” was the one that sounded out loud... Now you may think that there were attempts at some sort of spoilage here, but after that ad before the concert EP NF result, there was this other advert starring Victoria that played “Imaginary Friend” at the end, a last-ditch effort to trick viewers into going “see? just because that ad played the chosen song doesn’t mean it’s the chosen song!! this song could as well be a chosen song as well!!” yeah no shut up GUIGO IS the chosen song kthxbyebye.

Having said all that praise, I actually have “Growing Up Is Getting Old” fairly low on my ranking. It’s just because the year is so damn good and I have a lot more songs to care about more than this, but I appreciate the gesture that this singer is sending very much. Good luck on your road to conquer Europe, Victory-ia, I’m sure you get the best of the experience and all, because you would deserve it.

. who was your fist bias? Baekhyun. I remember i first found Nini the prettiest in Kokobop, but everything stick to the Byun. I got into Exo by this meme pic of Baekhyun. I remember thinking “my god, who is that idiot i need to know him better, he kinda cute too”

. who is your bias now? Baekhyun. It wont change a bit, i love him still the same, maybe even more. Because i feel like i know him more deeply. 

. what was the first mv you watched by them? Kokobop. Funny thing that my sis was playing this and Monster on one of our holidays and we didnt get into kpop more. 

. what’s your favourite mv? I really love Kokobop, they all look there so so good. Its so colorfull, something different. But i am so into their dark concepts, this sexy dark vibe like Monster, Lotto, Obsession. I was so happy when i was able to finally be with Exo and see this kind of concept myself with Obsession. I thought “here you go girl, your own Monster”. ALSO omg Coming Over is so underrated??? I love them there, i like music, everything. 

. if you could listen to one of their songs for the rest of your life, which would it be? I cant choose one. Its not a thing.. I love them, i love their voices, all the styles they can show. I love ballads when i need peace, i love crazy funky ones, when i need to be hyped, when i want to laugh. When i want to admire them but laugh abt old exo, i love almost every song they made. I can only say.. my one and only was always “Shes dreaming”, lets say. This one. It makes me calm and hugged by them all. 

. who would you want to see them collab with? I really admire Bts too and i think many of their voices could fit into Exo. I feel like Yeol would be perfect with Yoongi? For example. They fit in some places. But honestly, whatever they do (exo) its always golden so, maybe not some eastern very famous but not a good person one.. I dont want them to feel small when theyre already bigger artists and more talented ones than 3/4 globaly popular people.... I said what i said. 

. what (mv) concept do you want to see them do? Yeahhh i want dark too. I like them dark. Honestly i dont have smth in mind. OH NO I KNOW the vibe Yixing giving us right now! Traditional asian music video. Its so amazing, i love that concept. Yixing did the god works in his last album, the music is perfect. 

. have you ever had a dream with any of the members in it? YESSSSS, i had a lot. Mostly i have some 18+ going on.. (with Byun or Chanyeol) but i remember one when i spent whole day with Sehun, it was the best. Friends forever xD

. if you could spend the day with one member, who would it be and what would you do? With Baby Baek. I would love to just chill with him in his place, play games, eat yummy food, i could cook him some, laugh together and then watch him sleep on the couch, id cover him with blanket and brush his hair  :c

. which member do you think you would get on with best? I... dont know. Im similar to Baek sometimes so maybe id be annoying for them. (but they would love me duhh) Maybe Sehun? He doesnt care that much, i like his casual vibe. Maybe? I feel like me with Baek would be love/hate for sure haha.

I dont argue for a long time, its more like all flames and fireworks for a very quick minute. But id be scared honeslty. He can be scary, he is totally not cute baby boy some people could thing.
