Speculative Design: A tool to address women’s safety in the public environment.

Third Year Final Project.

My project explores the relationship between the public environment and women’s safety, focusing largely on gender-based public sexual harassment. I developed a process of engagement to produce wild, speculative outputs that allow for different types of discussions. My hope is that these discussions will bring about ideas and alterations to the current social environment that would ultimately create a safer public environment for women. From carrying out this process, I have designed a range of outputs that span different forms to spark conversations, and each output resembles a different concern raised by separate women. My hope is that by addressing the issue from a range of different angles, this project will encourage conversations that can influence policy change, employment laws, architectural developments and all other areas where the issue of women’s safety permeates our society.

I wanted to share my upcoming MA short narrative fiction film inspired by true events, "ITISAL". This film attempts to raise awareness of the tragic event that took place on August 4th 2020 in Beirut. ITISAL is based on a very personal story told through the perspective of a family living outside of Lebanon.

The fact is, I am not a good photographer. 😹 Nothing is ever in focus, I cut off people's feet, and no matter how many classes I have taken in my life, it is just not a tool that comes second nature to me. But I can still have fun with it… so sometimes I try. #blurryphotosforever

In the late 90s, living in London, I wrote to Alison Shaw of the band Cranes to ask if I could take her photo. She called me on the phone! She said yes. (Remember that saying, “You don’t ask - you don’t get”...) We used the photography studio at Goldsmiths College. I had no idea what I was doing, as is evident from the results. I projected my other photos onto her. She was amazing, and very patient, and very kind. We hung out socially a few times after that. She even came to my graduation art show at the college in 1999. 🖤 After I left London we kept in touch a little via letters and maybe a couple emails, but eventually lost touch.

A Cranes fan contacted me and asked if they could use one of the photos for a gig flyer in Portsmouth, which I didn’t actually get to go to, but I still have the flyers. Anyway - here are a few of the photos from our shoot, and there may be more - as usual I am totally disorganized and nothing is kept together.

BTW.. Who is Mike Waller? 

Mike has been a designer and teacher for 25 years, designing objects, services, exhibitions, products and new technologies, like the Internet of Things (IoT).

Mike is very interested in helping organisations use design to build capability in both industry and society. With the team in the Pi Studio he has worked with governments on supporting start-ups, and community psychologists on amplifying innovations in communities from the street level to larger scales using design.

The studio has run live research projects for Goldsmiths staff and students with the BBC, LG Electronics, Microsoft Research, Kodak, BT Labs and others. (https://www.gold.ac.uk/pi-studio/)

Best scenario happened to me and here I am, beginning my new blog to share the next year of my life with the world because it’ll sure be an exciting one! Sooo I got accepted in two different schools and I’ve decided to take both offers and have two graduations at the end of next year! Isn’t that mad???

I’ll be a student at the Goldsmiths University of London doing the MA Musical Theatre Production course while training part-time at the American Musical Theatre Academy (AMTA) for becoming a Musical Theatre performer! Who would have told me that in a year I’d be qualified to be both on stage and behind the scenes!

After Robin DiAngelo's talk last night at Goldsmiths University. You'll have to forgive me going on about this, but I haven't seen my pal for nearly 20 years and to reunite amidst, and share some time on, her 'White Fragility' book tour, (a New York Times bestseller), is simply awesome. Robin sat and signed books, which sold out. We caught the beautiful full moon on route to catch a cab back to Charing Cross, where we had a delightful cocktail and supper at All Bar One before calling it a night. Four years. Two qualifications. 10,114 words. Finally done! 😱 . I cannot express the emotions I feel for the dissertation I have handed in today. Since the argument I had at the beginning of my second year of college, this topic has been extremely close to my heart! To have it finally come to a close in a piece of work I am so immensely proud of is enough to reduce me to tears - though that may be the lack of sleep!
