There's this one thing that confused the hell out of me in Prisoner of Azkaban.
So in the third book, Harry talked Remus and Sirius out of killing Peter. Later he expresses regret about letting him go and Dumbledore just pats him on the head and goes "don't worry you did the right thing, now Peter is indebted to you and that kind of debt is a very powerful magic" or something like that. I might be mistaken. Been almost a whole decade since I read the books but I remember the gist of it.
Except... we never see that """magic""" in action. Peter kidnaps him literally next year and clearly has no issue using him to resurrect Voldemort. Then he spends the rest of the books not lifting a single finger to help Harry and co.
Oh waaaait. He tried to strangle Harry and had to be reminded that he'd spared him for him to only hesitate. Then the hand Voldemort gave him proceeded to turn on him and strangle him to death. Lol nvm my mistake. :P
Like... that's it?? That was the result of the powerful wizard debt magic?
Dumbledore spews so much bs throughout the series. I have no idea why I ever liked him.
Well, the thing is, this is a bit of a departure from the blog as it's not really about JKR and why she does the things she does, or any author for that matter, it's about ignoring them and trying to make sense of the world without them (which means taking everything we see about things like wizard debt magic into account and deciding what it is)
But I suppose we can take a little break.
If anon's referring to the time I said it was my favorite, anon will remember I didn't say it didn't have problems. I was picking against the others.
And yes.
That was it.
I think JKR was trying to have a "It's a pity Bilbo didn't kill Golllum" moment (not that she ever blatantly rips off Lord of the Rings, god forbid, no, she's never done that) where Harry is reminded that saving a life is a good thing and perhaps in time we will all have our purpose/redemption.
It's just she kind of forgot about it until the last moment where Peter momentarily chooses not to save his own skin and dies immediately in a hilariously horrible way.
And then brings up wizarding debt so that Severus has one to James, who died/Severus didn't beg to save him, and uh... I guess means he owes Harry somehow?
But yes, that's wizard debt, that's it.

Considering that I also like / sympathize with Michael Myers, Anakin Skywalker, and Golllum, no, I am not bummed at all.
What I am sorry about is that I can't call him Saint Judas.
The tragedy of a well-meaning disciple becoming someone who would betray his teacher, as well as the choice to develop a character for a show, is mentioned in the clip below. But even if indeed he joined the fellowship fully intending to turn his Rabbi over to His opponents, if indeed he was Laughing Menacingly to himself for like three years until Holy Thursday, well, I think his journey wouldn't have been any less tragic.
Here was a person, full of flaws, making a bad decision, and in need of being set aright. And he willfully chose to set himself against the very Man whose mission is to save him.
There seems little doubt that he despaired of forgiveness. I am no theologian, and I won't go against the teachings of the Church. Yet that same Church has taught nothing definitive about his soul, and abundantly about hope. Perhaps he didn't entirely despair; perhaps his mind had collapsed after what he'd done. Perhaps, in his very last moments, he sought mercy. And no one is more eager to grant him that mercy than the Friend whom he betrayed.

Debates in Tolkien fandom are wild. In other fandom you reference the books to fight the movie fans and say "well, the books said... so you're wrong, your father is wrong, your whole family is wrong."
BUT
In Tolkien fandom you can't say "well, the books said...." Because the books say Fëanor offed his own son and the books also say Fëanor didn't off his own son, depending upon which book you're referring to.
Everyone is wrong and everyone is right.
We have Schrodinger's DEBATES.

The Hobbit, An illustrated edition (1977)
Bilbo meets Gollum.
While I think Andy Serkis did an absolutely excellent job playing Gollum, the best portrayal of Gollum (in my opinion) goes to Brother Theodore, who voiced Gollum in this cartoon version of the Hobbit.  He is the standard by which all other Gollums should be judged.
Brother Theodore also had an interesting life (apparently his family was a well-to-do jewish family in Germany and his father ran a magazine printing press or something like that, but was forced to sell it to the Nazis for next to nothing. His family immigrated to the U.S. and had to start all over).
This Golllum scene in the cartoon version is probably my favorite scene. The pacing and the mood are superb.  Thank you to Arthur Rankin and Jules Bass for the excellent directing/production and thank you to Brother Theodore for the excellent performance.
