I've been noticing some classic Aussie sounds being released lately. By classic I mean that rocking sound that Eddy Current Suppression Ring perfected in the early 2000s.

Split System (Melbourne, Australia) is the vehicle for Aaron Mawson's (Stiff Richards) music. The Bandcamp page mentions the "riffage" of both the aforementioned ECSR and The Saints.

This is being released by a holy alliance of Goner Records (US), Drunken Sailor (UK) and Legless (Australia).

152: Quintron // Too Thirsty 4 Love

Too Thirsty 4 Love Quintron 2008, Goner (Bandcamp)

For the uninitiated, Quintron is a New Orleans-bred musician who uses a Frankensteined organ/synthesizer of his own invention to make the dance music equivalent of those scrap metal sculptures that spring up in the yards of local eccentrics. Too Thirsty 4 Love, his first LP for garage rock label Goner Records, marries vintage organ sounds and punky grime to late ‘90s electronica beats (think Booker T. Jones playing Vengaboys, but recorded like the Stooges). Quintron’s whole shtick is very silly, very campy (particularly when you factor in the involvement of his wife Miss Pussycat, an unskilled but enthusiastic co-lead singer who doubles as a go-go dancer and puppeteer in the duo’s legendary live shows), but everything he does he does till every last body in the room has a sweat on. You could lump this in with the comedy rock of an act like Electric Six, but to my ears at least, the rough textures and genuine freakiness of Quintron’s music make it cooler by far. He's of that Weirdo Internationale that secretly keeps the world going. (Appropos of not quite nothing, but any Torontonians reading who like this very particular type of wholesome lunatic married couple vibe should scope out Hot Breath Karaoke and everything under Mike Gabel and Jennifer Earle's general aegis.)

Anyway, Quintron's great. Bonus points for writing the most terrifying sentence in any language (“The Boss Wants to Party With You”).

"There Is No Light" is perhaps the last sign of life left in this ecosystem, and one Ibex Clone manifest into being through their own will of cosmic post-punk. "I kept waiting for some vision / To wash over my eyes / Indistinct and getting vaguer / Mind aneasthetized," guitarist and vocalist George Williford hails into a decaying light as bassist Alec McIntyre and drummer Meredith Lones push demise further out through a sheer refusal to let go in breathing in and out of the lungs of their instruments.

I learned about 1-800-MIKEY from Goner Records. They received another shipment of "Plushy" from Under The Gun Records (East Los Angeles, California).

Turns out 1-800-MIKEY is Michael Barker (Sydney, Australia) who must have some ties to local punks - non other than Tee Vee Repairman played drums on a few tracks. Fellow member of Gee Tee, Kel Mason, plays drums on the other tracks.

This is punk in the vein of Jay Reatard and Nobunny. It's no wonder that Goner Records carries this release.

Erste Theke Trontraeger (ETT) is handling the European release.

171: John Wesley Coleman // Bad Lady Goes to Jail

Bad Lady Goes to Jail John Wesley Coleman 2010, Goner (Bandcamp)

Rough (emphasis on rough) and ready (more like just rolled out of bed) garage rock in the venerable Goner Records style (think Oblivians, Reatards, King Khan), John Wesley Coleman put out seven LPs between 2009 and 2012, of which Bad Lady Goes to Jail is without doubt the one I have. (Recycling my own joke from 165 reviews back…) I like it! Coleman has the kind of sound all the hard-touring, heart and soul rock bands were going for when I was at my show-going peak in the early ‘10s (Ottawa also had a bumper crop of local acts in this mode), so Bad Lady’s not a tough sell. It’s the sort of album with three songs with babe/baby in the title, and also a song called “Oh, Basketball” that’s about what it says it is (and oddly sounds like someone half-learned a riff from R.E.M.’s Chronic Town). I don’t know any of Coleman’s other work, but this is an easy-drinking summer album to put on while sitting on your porch if you’re trying to manifest a kickball league to join.
