Domestic AU! Domestic AU! Domestic AU!
I don’t really have anything intelligent to say right now but I just love it so much and I need more of soft!Jack raising these kids he loves more than life. Plus David coming in and just adopting them and being the steadying presence Jack never had is so so good.
Anyway you’re amazing and it’s amazing have a nice day.
Hi friend!! I’m having an amazing day, thank you! 💗
So here’s another domestic au idea I’ve been thinking about recently.
While he’s still in high school, Davey always swings by the elementary school so that he and Les can walk home together. But one day, in late fall of his freshman year, he goes to pick up Les and finds Tony and Charlie waiting with him. Jack and Davey are quickly becoming great friends, and Charlie and Les are thick as thieves (they’re in the same class) so at first Davey doesn’t realize anything’s wrong
“David!” Les chirps, waving wildly as he spots Davey approaching. “David, can Charlie and Tony come home with us? Their brother didn’t come pick ‘em up and they don’t want to get on the subway all alone.”
“What do you mean, Jack didn’t come pick them up?” David says, frowning. “And, hi Tony, hi Charlie.”
“Hi Davey!” Charlie says.
“We definitely could’ve gotten on the subway alone,” Tony announces, looking incredibly disgruntled for an eight year old. “But Les said he’d tell the monitor on us if we did.”
“Because you’re not supposed’ta get on the train alone!” Les insists. “My Mama says it’s dangerous.”
Tony rolls his eyes, crosses his arms over his chest, but doesn’t argue.
“Where’s Jack?” David asks again. “He was absent from school today—are you sure he’s coming? Maybe your parents are coming by after work instead?”
“We don’t got any parents,” Charlie informs him, childishly innocent, and David’s heart lurches in his chest. “We just got Mr. Snyder and I don’t think he even knows when we get outta school—“
“Jack picks us up,” Tony insists. “Jack always picks us up. But he was real sick this morning, so maybe he’s just late?”
“Jack’s sick?” David asks.
“Yeah,” Charlie says. “He was sneezin’ and coughin’ and shiverin’ all night, and he kept fallin’ asleep on the subway when he dropped us off.”
“Can’t they come home with us!” Les pleads. “I told the monitor that we were waiting on you, that you were gonna walk us home today.”
“Les,” David sighs. “You shouldn’t lie to your teachers.”
“But it’s not a lie if you actually walk us home!” Les says, all sad puppy eyes. “Please?”
So, Davey ends up walking Les back home first, then walking Tony and Charlie back to their apartment.
I really like the idea of Les getting excited and saying something like, ‘yeah, you can come over and we’ll watch spongebob, yadda yadda,’ and Davey tries to shut it down before Les can get too into it and says something like, ‘you’ve got guitar in 45 minutes and Papa will kill you if you skip, you don’t wanna get in trouble, right?’. Then Tony adds, in a very conversational voice, ‘yeah, Snyder gets real mad and says he’s gonna kill us when we don’t do what he wants, we don’t want you to get in trouble.’
And Davey’s like, excuse me? Because he was mostly exaggerating but Tony sounds weirdly calm and serious about this and it twinges some little instinct in the back of Davey’s mind that something’s off.
But the moment passes (for now)
So, Davey eventually gets Tony and Charlie back to their apartment. He’s been texting and trying to call Jack the whole time, because he doesn’t want Jack to turn up to the elementary school and finds his brothers missing. But when they arrive, the find Jack curled up on the living room sofa, smelling of Vick’s salve and shivering with fever, nose rubbed raw from blowing it. And Davey’s heart breaks, because it’s utterly evident that Jack is too sick to take care of himself and there’s clearly no one else around to do it.
So Davey takes it upon himself to do it himself.
He takes the boys with him for a trip to the corner store because he doesn’t want to leave them alone when Jack’s so incapacitated. They make a whole adventure of Taking Care of Jack: they pick out some good soup, crackers, cold medicine, tissues, cough drops, orange juice, and a bunch of other stuff. Tony and Charlie are Very Invested in this task, and Davey realizes that they’ve been very worried about Jack, even though they don’t seem to realize that’s what they’re feeling.
Jack wakes up as Davey’s heating up some soup on the stove top. He’s very confused to find Davey in his apartment, and when he realizes that he slept through picking Charlie and Tony up from school, he feels So Guilty. But Davey’s like, Jack, you look like hell, you don’t need to be getting up from the couch, let alone trying to traverse the subway and the streets in November.
“You don’t got to—“
“Jackie,” David says, exasperated. “It’s fine, just go sit back down before you fall down.”
“But—“ Jack says, weak and raspy.
“Sit. Down.”
I love the idea of Jack, who’s always been the caretaker, finally having someone show him that it’s okay to be taken care of. I also love the idea of Davey, Tony, and Charlie having a a really sweet bonding moment together.
I think this is where Tony and Charlie really start to see Davey as another Trusted Adult (not that Davey, at 15, is an adult in any sense of the word, but the boys are young so that’s how they think of it) and Jack starts to see Davey not just a school friend, but as someone who he can actually lean on and confide in outside of a school setting
Jack has Issues with letting people know anything about his home life, for obvious reasons. But Davey proves that he can be trusted not to judge.
But yeah! Hope that was interesting! I love the domestic au very much 😊

Whispers of love
Friday night you were sitting in your dorm with Zoey in the middle of your horror movie marathon. You were watching the tv through the small gaps between your fingers, as your hand presses against your face, shielding yourself from the scary parts.
“God why did I agree to a horror marathon?” you squirm in your seat as the killer in the movie is running in pursuit of one of the girls, knife in his hand.
“Because you love me” Zoey retorts, wide-eyed, her gaze never leaving the screen as her hands fishes in the popcorn bowl in front of her. Just as the killer approaches the girl in the movie as raises his knife, your phone suddenly rings, eliciting a series of screams from both you and Zoey.
“Girl! Put your phone on silent! I almost had a heart attack!” Zoey remarks, hand clutching at her chest.
“Sorry” you squeak as you reach out and see Ina’s name flash across the screen. “It’s Ina.”
You look dumbfounded at Zoey who reaches out for the remote to pause the movie as she turns back to you expectedly, “well? Answer it.”
You accept the call, putting it on speaker and gingerly answer the phone with a small hello. On the other side, it’s complete silence from Ina, the background chatter of wherever she is blaring through the phone’s speakers. A few seconds later, Ina replies, her voice low and words slightly slurring, “mmm, Bea is this you?”
“Uh yeah Ina, where are you it sounds loud.”
A few more seconds of silence from Ina passes until you hear rustling, you presume Ina’s trying to get her bearings, “I’m at a bar. The name and location of it is currently unknown to me,” her voice slightly falters but even as a drunk, the articulation of Ina’s words is still pretty formidable. “I went out drinking with an old friend, but it seems that she has found company in the man who sent her a drink and so I’m here drinking.”
Zoey snorts, “that sounds familiar,” you roll your eyes in retort and playfully nudge her.
“Do you have a way to get home Ina?”
“No! I’ve found some new friends and they’re celebrating so I’m celebrating with them” you hear very high pitched screeching in the background and you instinctively jerk your phone away from yourself, grimacing. You can’t help but laugh when Ina suddenly raises her voice, trying to match the level of the music as she belts out the lyrics, “Ina stay put I’m coming” you scream into the phone and you turn to Zoey your expression apologetic.
Before you can speak, Zoey interrupts, “go get your woman,” she laughs as you hug your best friend and make your way to your bedroom, quickly slipping into some jeans, phone to your ear as Ina is still on the line as you slip on your shoes and run into the night.
Zoey sits in the living room, her eyes fixed on the screen in front of her, she presses play, resuming the movie but when a sudden clang from outside startles her, she quickly pauses the movie and shoots straight to her room, “hell no. I’m not watching this on my own.”
You keep Ina talking the entire cab ride to the bar, as you finally manage to scrounge up a name and address after Ina hands over the phone to a random woman who gives you the information you need. When you enter the bar, you see a very happy Ina, encircled by a bunch of drunk women who are clearly in the middle of a bachelorette party, singing and attempting to dance but looking more like a bunch of fish out of water. Ina squeals and wraps her arms around you, squeezing you close, “Bea, have you met my new friends? Hey guys this is Bea!” she screams as she lets go of you to grab another shot from the table next to her. So much for her being able to keep her usual composure when drunk.
A few of the women cheer at the sound of Ina’s announcement. One of them abruptly grabs you by your hand tugging you close to her, “so you’re Bea.” You raise an inquisitive eyebrow and nod at the stranger as she leans in, her lips hovering over the shell of your ear, “Ina would not stop talking about you. She’s definitely a keeper.” You’re unable to suppress a smile as you glance over at Ina, who’s currently dancing rambunctiously to the music, “yeah she definitely is.” After a few moans and groans from the professor you finally manage to convince her to come home with you.
Ina wraps an arm around your shoulder, while you firmly grip her waist supporting her, as she stumbles her way out of the bar. You hail a cab and usher Ina inside, and after a series of low rumblings, she grumbles out her address and it dawns on you that it’s going to be your first time seeing Ina’s apartment.
When you reach Ina’s house, you climb out of the car and hold out a hand for Ina which she gladly accepts, her hand sliding into yours, emitting warmth all over your body. She fumbles with the keys in her hands, struggling to open the door, so you decide to take matters into your own hands and unlock the door yourself. As you enter Ina’s place, you carefully maneuver her to the couch, which she practically collapses on. Once Ina’s settled on the couch, your eyes immediately begin to drift around the room, it’s tinier than your dorm room but it’s humble and quintessentially Ina. There’s a bookshelf, smaller than the one Ina has in her office, but it’s filled with books ranging from anthropology to a whole bunch of sci-fi novels and other nerdy things that Ina is into. Plastered on her walls are framed photographs of her with her sister Lillian and niece Charlotte and you take a moment to appreciate the photos, your heart melting at the cuteness overload.
Ina begins grumbling, her hand clasping at her hand as she winces, you quickly move towards her, sitting at the edge of the sofa, “you should have some coffee, it will sober you up.” Ina gingerly nods and you move towards the kitchen and find a high tech coffee maker in the corner of the counter. You make a cup of coffee for Ina and a tea for yourself as you pass the cup to Ina who gazes at you, grateful.
She drinks her coffee in silence and your eyes once again drift over to the room, Ina notices you appraising her home, “So what do you think?” her voice low but more sober than before.
“Your home is beautiful Ina, you weren't kidding when you said Belvoire pays well.”
Ina chuckles before shaking her head slightly, “When I imagined introducing you to my home, I didn’t think I would be a drunken mess.”
“Yeah you’re an absolute trainwreck” you teasingly retort, Ina blushes furiously and hangs her head in embarrassment.
“I apologize Bea, I didn’t mean to disrupt your evening or anything by bailing me out,”
You look at the professor solemnly and place your hand on her thigh, “it’s fine Ina. I mean I’ve never seen you drunk before so it was freaking hilarious to watch. And you saved me, Zoey insisted on watching horror movies but I don’t think I’m gonna be able to sleep for a week after that.” Ina laughs, but groans slightly as she grips her head, “that hangover is not going to be pretty so I suggest you get some sleep.”
Ina winces and nods, “yes, I think that’s a good idea.” You move off your chair to help guide Ina to her bedroom but she moves her body, laying on the couch, sleep already infiltrating her senses. You find a blanket tucked under the coffee table and cover Ina with it, tucking her in.
You place a soft kiss on Ina’s forehead but before you pull away you hear Ina whisper, “ I love you” and you suddenly freeze. You cautiously look over at Ina who falls back into her slumber, most likely unaware of what she’s just said. You warily move over to the chair near the couch and settle in for the night.
The next morning Ina jerks awake, her sleep broken by sudden noises, shifting her head towards the kitchen to see you hovering over the stove making scrambled eggs.
“Hey,” Ina says, brows furrowed as she looks at you, a confused expression on her face.
“Ina, hey, I’m sorry did I wake you?” You look over at Ina who looks a little worse for wear, but she slowly shakes her head.
“No, it’s fine.”
She rubs her temples with her fingers and you point towards the coffee table, “I’ve left some aspirin and water for you.” Ina eagerly downs the medicine and downs the water, not stopping until the glass is completely empty. “I made breakfast” you stalk towards the living room, two hot plates in your hand as you set them down on the table, handing Ina a fork who hungrily chows down on the food.
“Not that I’m not happy to see you Bea, but what exactly happened last night?” worry etched all over her face as she nervously makes eye contact with you.
“You got a little drunk, made some new friends and I brought you home.”
Ina gulps uneasily, “so we didn’t?” she trails off.
You stare at Ina, dumbfounded until realisation dawns on you, “no Ina, oh my god. Nothing happened. I just brought you home” you respond reassuringly, Ina musters a small smile before resuming eating.
She suddenly breaks the silence, guilt flashing across her face, “not that I don’t want anything to happen between us Bea. I mean we’ve already established a relationship between us. I just mean, I-” Ina struggles to come up with the words and you can’t help but laugh.
“Relax Ina. I know what you meant.”
Ina visibly becomes flustered, as she sheepishly rubs her hand on her neck, “Since I was quite um intoxicated last night, did I say or do anything embarrassing last night?”
You raise an eyebrow at Ina, “where do I begin? You have great pipes by the way. I mean the way your voice screeches and cracks when trying to sing is beautiful.” Ina groans, face palming and you decide to tease her further, “also you’re a very friendly drunk. You made a lot of friends at the bar last night.” Ina groans even louder, shaking her head softly.
“Well thank you for taking me home Bea it is much appreciated. I didn’t even ask, what do you think of my home?”
You giggle, “technically you did ask me last night, but I guess I’ll say it again. It’s beautiful.” You stare at Ina as your mind flashes back to her saying “I love you” last night and your heart begins to dull and you wonder if she meant it or not.
Ina eyes you warily, “is everything alright Bea? Did something else happen last night?” You swallow uneasily but plaster a smile on your face, “not really. But one woman at the bar did mention you had a lot to say about me last night.” Ina stares at you, embarrassment taking over her features but she sighs blissfully before moving towards you and placing a sweet chaste kiss on your lips, “well I don’t blame myself for wanting to express my feelings about you to random strangers.” She laces her hand with yours, her slender fingers, fitting perfectly in your hand, her eyes full of affection.
You lean in and kiss her again, before breaking apart and leaning your forehead against hers, “she said you were a keeper.”
The smile on Ina’s face, beams even brighter, “well when you love someone, all you want to do is profess your love from the rooftops.” So Ina was aware of what she said last night. You feel your heart bursting as you whisper against her lips, “I love you too” You share a passionate kiss and spend the rest of the day with Ina as she shows you the rest of her apartment, starting with the bedroom.

Christmas Kiss | Shawn Mendes
Summary: You and Shawn have been friends since you were kids. You never meant to fall in love with him, his life and job now make a relationship hard. This Christmas you decide to tell him how you feel, there is only one problem, you’re sick with a cold and you don’t think you’ll get to see him. [fluff] [Christmas themed] [sick/cold] [non au] [friends to lovers]
Word Count: 2.6k
|Masterlist In Bio|
Being sick when Shawn comes home from tour for Christmas is not ideal. You felt the cold coming on two days before he was scheduled to land in Toronto. You had plans, big plans with Shawn. It's been ages since he's been able to hang out in person, and you finally have the courage to admit to him that you want to be more than friends. This week was supposed to be a huge life changing event, a Christmas to remember. You did everything you could to stop the onslaught of runny nose and puffy watery eyes; medicine, orange juice, supplements, but to no avail. You are undoubtedly, irrevocably, sick.
Monday morning you wake up to the doorbell for your apartment buzzing non stop. The world feels heavy. You sit up in slow motion it seems and there is nothing you can do but focus on breathing for a moment while you gain your bearings and listen to that awful tinny buzzing from someone wanting into your building. You crawl out of bed and drag yourself to the door, dragging your feet like they're in sticky mud.
"Hello?" You ask, finger on the call button for the front door. Your voice is completely wrecked, absolutely destroyed from coughing. "Hello? Anybody there?"
"It's Shawn."
"Shawn?" You glance at the clock over your couch a few feet away. It's just after nine. "What're you doing here?"
"I got you some stuff. Let me in, it's cold out here." He laughs and you press the door button to let him in.
Moments later he is pushing open the door to your apartment and carrying in bags of stuff. You wrap a blanket off the couch around your shoulders and watch as he unloads bag after bag onto your kitchen island.
"What's this?"
"Medicine, food, gifts." Shawn starts unpacking and setting aside Oreos and some ramen cups. "I stopped by the store for you on my way over with your Christmas gifts."
You shuffle forward and look at the bags. They're full of more groceries than you would usually buy in two weeks. How much does the guy think you eat? And what is with all the junk food? You tug the corner of a bag down and see a bottle of whiskey. "What's this?" You pull out a fifth of Canadian whiskey and give Shawn a look.
"That's for us." He puts away the Oreos and some mac and cheese into a cupboard. "Hot toddies are good for making you sweat out a cold."
"Uh huh. You said “us”? You're not staying."
"The hell I’m not."
"Shawn, you can't get sick. You're a rockstar, you have to sing. You...you have responsibilities."
"Yeah and right now," he pauses and hands you a box of tissues. "My responsibility is my best friend."
Best friend. That packs a punch you didn't expect. A haunting reminder of how he thinks of you, at least, how he presents that he thinks of you. It's hard and it's getting harder, that courage you built up the last few months is withering now like ice  in the hot sun. It's just turning to steam before your very eyes. Shit.
"What if you get sick?"
"So what? I've been sick before and I'll be sick again." Shawn wads up the last of the grocery bags and sets aside a bunch of wrapped boxes on the counter. "I've waited four months to be here and to see you. I'm not letting some stupid runny nose stop me."
"I'm not going to be any fun." You sniff, eyes watering heavily. "I'm just going to sleep and be miserable."
Shawn rolls his eyes. "I know you. You'll want to watch Lion King and drink peppermint tea until you're so tired you pass out. I'm prepared for that."
"Wow. Just read me like a book why don't you?"
He grins. "Go sit down. I'll make some tea and we'll talk and catch up."
"We talk everyday."
"But it's different when we're together."
"Yeah but..." You chew on your lip and he lays his hand on your shoulder. "Never mind. Thank you for coming over."
"You'd do the same for me." He cups your cheek and you turn your eyes up at him, sure that you must look terrible. "You're welcome."
His soft gaze breaks you. You step forward and wrap your arms around him, pressing your face to his chest. Your fingers curl tight into his shirt and he holds your head with both hands.
"I missed you," he says, fingers working into your hair and scratching at your scalp with his blunt fingertips. "Things aren't the same without you."
"I missed you too." You murmur, eyes closed and you can almost, just barely, smell his cologne. Maybe your one nostril is unblocked. Maybe...just maybe you just want to be immersed in that familiar scent so bad it's appearing in your mind.
_____________________
Shawn spends the rest of the day with you. He makes you tea and warm whiskey spiked drinks. You watch the Lion King, Mulan and Moana. Just after six the sun starts to slip behind the horizon, your living room becoming dark. Shawn's arm finds its way around your shoulders and he leans his head on your head. You want to tell him. You need to tell him how you feel.
"Tomorrow is Christmas."
You nod slightly. "Sure is."
"My parents are in Barbados." Shawn chuckles. "It was a gift for their anniversary, but the cruise got rescheduled. I was surprised when they said they'd be gone for Christmas. It's not like mom to miss it."
"Maybe they just really needed a vacation."
Shawn sits up and runs a hand over his unruly long hair. "Probably. I know mom's been having a hell of a time finding clients for work. And dad...dad is always working hard, a hundred and fifty percent everyday." He sighs. "I'm glad they taught me a good work ethic y'know, but I wish they'd take it easy. It's not like it was when Aaliyah and I were kids. They don't have to try so hard."
You lay your hand on Shawn's and he turns it over, threading his fingers between yours and rubbing absentmindedly with his thumb. "I suppose parents always want to provide for their kids, even if they are rockstars." You giggle and he gives you a look.
He hates when you call him rockstar. He says it feels like it cheapens things, makes you less than him. He doesn't want you to think of him as a rockstar but as your best friend.
"Are you parents flying in for the holiday?"
You shake your head. "No, they couldn't afford it this year."
"Why'd they move to Florida again?"
"Mom wanted to live on the beach." You roll your eyes and he squeezes your hand. "Dad also got a job down there with the construction company he works for."
"Ah. So, do you want to spend Christmas together?"
"I figured that was the plan." You look to the window where it's snowing heavily outside. "I didn't think you'd want to drive home across Toronto in this weather."
"I don't." Shawn pulls his hand away to brush his hair back with it while he reaches for his drink. "I don't mind taking the couch."
"You know what you need?" You say, getting up and going over to the kitchen. You grab a few hair ties out of the bowl that holds your keys. "These."
"Ponytails?"
"Yeah. Your hair is ridiculous and you keep pushing it out of your face every two minutes." You stand in front of him and he leans forward for you. Skillfully you gather up the top of his hair into two little pig tails on the top of his head. He looks outrageous and you can't help the ugly laugh that burbles out.
"I look stupid don't I?" Shawn asks, half laughing at your reaction. He stands and looks in the decorative mirror beside the TV. "Ohmygod. This is my new look." He turns to look at you where you've collapsed on the couch laughing and struggling to breath through your clogged nose. "Goodbye headbands, hello pigtails."
"Stop! Shawn I'm gonna die!"
"Nope. You did this." He poses, peace sign over his face while making duck lips. "High fashion baby."
You start coughing, laughter quickly succumbing to a wheezing fit and hacking. You down the rest of your tea, just warm from sitting on the table too long, and take a few deep breaths.
Shawn drops to his knees beside you, hand on your chest. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I made you laugh too hard, I'm so sorry. What can I do? How do I help?"
"I'm fine, I'm fine." You cough a few more times and grab Shawn's mug, downing his drink. "I just laughed too hard. It's alright. I'm okay, just a little tired now."
"Come on, let's settle back down on the couch." Shawn grabs your arms and sits you up right on the sofa. "I'll grab some extra blankets and we'll sleep out here."
"But-"
"No buts. I'll be right back."
You close your eyes and lean your head back on the cushions. You're dying. Sickness is wreaking havoc on your body. Shawn's wreaking havoc on your heart, and you're absolutely destroying your mental capacity with liquor and cough medicine. You can't wait. You have to tell Shawn. It's now or never. Balls to the wall. You just have to-
"Are you okay?" Shawn's voice breaks through your thoughts and you open your eyes. "You look a little out of it."
"I love you."
"I love you too?" He says sinking down on the couch and flopping the blankets he was carrying over your lap. "What's with the sudden affection?"
"No, I mean-" You hold your head as it throbs. Maybe whiskey and NyQuil don't mix. In fact, you know they don't. "I am in love with you."
"I know."
"W-what?"
Shawn brushes your hair back off your clammy face and looks at you with those soft hazel brown eyes you adore. "I've known for a long time.”
“I-I Wha-”
“It's okay, don’t panic. I'm in love with you too. I know I always said that when the time comes I'll know, and I can't pinpoint the moment it happened but one day I woke up and I realized my whole world is waiting for me in a tiny apartment in Toronto." He chuckles. "I've been working on a way to tell you, a way to make it work with my job. I haven't found that way yet, and I hoped you would wait for me, though I didn't expect that. So I never told you. I couldn't- I won't hurt someone like that, especially not you."
"I-I don't know what to say." You stare at him, unsure of your reality as your head swims. Is this real? Did you fall asleep? Are you in some kind of cold medicine induced mini coma? "I'm asleep aren’t I?"
"You're not." Shawn presses his hand to your forehead. "You've got a fever though."
"This isn't real. You're not even here. I'm going crazy." You slump over and Shawn covers you with blankets. "I'm just coping aren't I? Stressed myself out so far that I'm dreaming of telling you the truth."
"You're awfully self aware for a dream."
"That's just what dream Shawn would say."
He chuckles. "I'm getting you some Advil. Relax and I'll be right back with a very real glass of water and two very real pain relievers."
You close your eyes once more and quickly you begin to drift off to sleep. You vaguely remember Shawn sitting your head up to take the Advil and water. But after that everything is a blur of sleep and muddled nonsense dreams.
_____________________
Christmas morning you wake up on the couch. Your body is stiff, achy from sickness and the unsupportive couch cushions. Beside you is a glass of water and some cold medicine on the coffee table. There is a lump of blankets by the other end of the couch and you can see a mop of hair sticking out, two pigtails very visible.
Then reality hits you. If you're waking up now with Shawn asleep in your living room that means last night was very real. It means...you confessed your feelings and Shawn, well, he confessed them back. Excitement, hope and terror are quite a cocktail of emotions. They make your stomach lurch, your heart flutter and your hands shake. What happens now? Where do things go from here?
"Hey," Shawn's groans, peeking over his blankets at you. "How's the fever?"
"Good? I think? I just woke up."
"Mmm." He sits up and stretches. "It's Christmas."
"Yeah." You look over to the tree in the corner where there are boxes from your parents, your sister and Shawn all waiting to be unwrapped. "I can wait though."
"Why?"
"Because I don't want to be the only one to unwrap gifts."
Shawn laughs and grabs a few of the boxes from under the tree. "I brought my gifts too, the ones my parents and Aaliyah left for me at my apartment."
"Oh. I thought you brought all of those for me, I thought it was a lot but I didn't want to say anything."
"No." Shawn passes you a box with your name on it. "You definitely deserve this many, but I didn't go crazy."
"You've been crazy." You smile and he gives you a look that turns into a smirk. "Did...did you mean what you said last night?"
"Every word of it." Shawn sits across from you on the couch with his box in his lap. He picks at the paper a bit. "It's okay, like if you don't want to do anything right now. I know my life is insane and yours isn't anywhere near as hectic." He chews his lower lip. "I couldn't ever ask you to commit to my life and the distance and-"
"Shawn."
"Yes?"
"We'll figure it out."
His eyes light up and he stares at you, seemingly bewildered. "You want to try? You want to be in a relationship? With me? I-I'm- you're sure?"
"Shawn I haven't wanted anything more in the last year. We already make the distance work as friends. What's the difference in doing it as a couple?" You sniff and wipe your eyes that are watering from your clogged sinuses. "I think the distance has only made us stronger friends and-"
Shawn leans in to kiss you, hands on your legs and you stop him at the last second with your fingers against his lips. "Please?" he murmurs.
"You're so dumb."
"Because I'm going to kissing you and you're sick?"
"Yes."
He grins and grabs your face, pressing his forehead against yours. "I guess we'll just have to be the couple that shares everything."
"This is not what that means."
"I don't care." He tries to kiss you again and you groan, stopping him. "Shawn, you're gonna get sick."
"I don't care." Another attempted kiss. "I've waited a long time for this."
You cup his face and push him back a bit so he will stop trying to infect himself. “I have too but I'm not going to kiss you and get you sick. And when you've got this cold I will not kiss you then either."
"Yeah you will. Don't lie."
"I won't." You giggle and he pushes forward, leaning you back until you're laying against the arm of the couch with his body covering yours. "Is this for real?"
"Very real." He kisses your nose. "I don't want to wait." He kisses your head. "I've been alone for a long while this feels...it feels so right. Please let me kiss you."
"Alright." You close your eyes and he presses his lips to yours. It's soft, sweet and everything you ever imagined. "Happy?"
"Yes," he whispers, smiling against your lips. "Merry Christmas darling."
You giggle at the pet name. He knows it's one of your favourites. "Merry Christmas Shawn."

alright, i was on the fence about the oc weekend idea, but fuck it i have a bunch of shit made why not? block “oc weekend” tag if you don’t care cuz same
so have some cleo (and nia) headcanons to kick whatever the fuck this is gonna be off
super long cuz i have a serious problem
So her starting skills were bow, charisma, and wildlife, then woods lore, then blade, medicine, deception, brawling, seduction
She made some money hunting, which is where the bow and animal skills came from
With being an elf, her and Kade were orphaned together in a massacre and taken in by a local farmer
Absolutely got into so much trouble, usually Cleo getting a bad idea and dragging Kade along, but could always talk her way out of it, hence the charisma
MC canonically has relationship experience, right? I think she had a short term partner, maybe some flings with travelers or something, but never really got invested in relationships, just wasn’t her thing
Especially in RIverbend, where everyone knows everyone and it’s awkward if you break up
She’s pretty similar to canon MC, wild and goofy and somewhat reckless
But also really determined and caring and sweet when she needs to be
I adore her if you can’t tell
The first time she saw Nia, totally tongue-tied and a flustered mess, she’s smooth when it’s a joke but incapable of any coherent words when it turns real
She’s pretty awkward, definitely stiff at first, but slowly loosens up as she gets closer to Nia, letting her goofy side show
She for sure pines and gets made fun of for it by Kade, then Mal and Imtura every time she gets flustered
And Threep likes to rub it in too, occasionally threatening to say something unless he gets snacks he does the same to Nia askjksdf
I’m also in love with the idea of Mal and Imtura playing matchmaker and constantly trying to set them up in situations where they have to be close, and the two of them losing their minds when Cleo and Nia get stuck in that pit
The night at the cabin in the Deadwood was the first moment Cleo realised that there could be something real there, like it just never clicked until Nia was straight up telling her she liked her
From then on things definitely change, and Cleo starts being a lot softer, like at the masquerade and stuff
But the argument in the cabin always sticks out in her mind, she defended Nia’s right to spend her life as she chooses, but she doesn’t necessarily like it
She always tries to find work arounds for Nia using her light, like using her own before Nia can get the chance
She for sure nearly decked the High Priest, just for all his bullshit, and was very happy to get that tracking orb from him to make sure they would be safe she had some plans already
So I don’t accept MC being cool after Nia straight up gets yanked into the Shadow Realm, Cleo absolutely was about to jump in after her until Imtura grabbed her and jerked her back like “what the fuck are you doing”
Cleo was about to snap the entire time they were working their way through the Shadow Realm, definitely wrecked Vonstratz on Nia’s behalf
I also don’t accept the “single tear” line when MC fucking KILLS Nia, Cleo would be bawling her eyes out and refusing to let go of her when she dies
There not being an ily felt kinda weird to me, and cuz Cleo’s a sap, I feel like she’d either say it before stabbing Nia or during the diamond scene where they’re looking out at Whiterun
In the first instance, it’s more for her piece of mind, that Nia knows what her sacrifice means
When Nia comes back, Cleo whispers it a million times into her shoulder as she hugs her, until she sounds like a broken record
For the second one, it’d be a bit spur of the moment, she’d just be looking in Nia’s eyes as the words spill out, but she wouldn’t even care cuz it felt so right
And now I’m going to ignore book 2 and make up my own shit
So immediately after, Cleo and Kade go back to Riverbend to pack up their lives there, Kade in order to stay in Whiterun cuz King Arlan made him a librarian or something, idk but he’s in Whiterun at the royal library and archives
Cleo ends up running a few odd jobs out of Whiterun for a while, helping Mal out quite a bit as Nia ends up with a lot of responsibilities at the temple after the High Priest gets axed
Cleo ends up quite well known as a good adventurer/travel mate by the time Nia ends up quitting the temple
Before they leave on their first trip as just them, Cleo takes her up to that terrace overlooking Whiterun after taking her to the market
They stare out at the city for a while, until the sun’s setting along the horizon
Cleo pulls out a ring from her bag, fiddling with it as she shifts on her feet nervously. She’s wussed out like half a dozen times already, and this is her last chance to do it somewhere so special
Nia figures out something’s up and starts prodding to figure it out, poking her and stuff and laughing the whole time
Cleo’s kind of found out, and turns to her blushing the ring held between her thumbs and index fingers as she avoids eye contact, “So, um. You wanna get married?”
Not what Nia was expecting at all and she kind of just 👁👄👁 for a while, until Cleo starts trying to back out of it, thinking she fucked up
And then it’s Nia’s turn to stumble over her words something along the lines of, “No, wait! Okay, um, no, so - No, I don’t mean no, just - Yes! Of course!”
The ring’s super basic, like plain silver without even a gem
I feel like Cleo found it on a trip with Mal, and immediately thought of Nia and proposing and freaked herself out a bit, but that’s why she didn’t look for another cuz shes a sap
They travel around the realm a bit, stopping in Undermount so Cleo can look into House Nightbloom, and getting rides from Imtura when Mal gives them a tip on a relic or something
All the while Nia’s trying to spread the Light in small villages, using her magic for little things as Cleo works favours again
At some point they get a cottage a ways away from a village, I’d say not too far from the Deadwood and things slow down for the most part, only the occasional trip for the temple
It’s a really cute house, small and surrounded by flowers and huge trees, Cleo builds a swing on one
The others visit occasionally, Kade and Threep the most often, and I almost want to say they take in an orphan, but I can’t decide if Cleo would trust herself enough for that
Though I feel like Nia would love to have pets at the least cleo always compares threep to the cats to annoy him
Elves canonically have longer life spans than humans, and Nia’s is even shorter from using her Light, so I’m sure you can tell where I’m going with this
Nia passes in her sleep before anyone else in the gang and it really fucks up Cleo, like the way she wakes up to it and can’t even stop it
And the worst part is that she’s always hoping just a little bit in the back of her mind that it’s like the first time, and Nia’s just going to wake up or knock on the front door
The gang meet up all together for a funeral, and Cleo plants the flowers from the bouquet from the end of book diamond scene
She ditches the cottage cuz too much of it is Nia, and is just kind of aimless for a little bit, staying with Kade in Whiterun, but ultimately hates not having a purpose
She moves to the old elven cabin in the Deadwood cuz shes a sap cuz it’s one of her favourite places
She devotes herself to fixing it up and making it better, helping travelers through the Deadwood cuz I feel like Tyril would open Undermount up
Everyone’s stayed in relative contact and tend to invite Cleo on adventures if they don’t hear from her for a while, just to keep her from isolating herself in the woods
Mal works with the monarchy to make things better in the Nooks and Crannies while still thievin, and especially when he’s older settles down more
I feel like he lives pretty long, but ends up sick and passing away, second to go and he kinda laughs about it his mum was sick right? and he jokes about the irony to feel better?
I doubt Imtura really accepts being a princess, I think she keeps captaining and fights it as long as she can until she really doesn’t have a choice
But she’s not like her mum, actually leaving Flotilla and like working with the guard and stuff
I think she’s third, dying in battle like a badass and saving her crew. She’s honored by the clans, and the monarchy and even Undermount declares her a hero or something idk how it works there
I feel like Kade would keep to stories, but maybe spend a while just moving about the realm, stay in Undermount to explore it and stuff, builds up his name as a bard
He dies in his sleep too cuz he deserves it, he passes when he’s visiting Riverbend again, he’s buried there and like the whole village shows up
I feel like Tyril’s significantly older than everyone else, but being an elf hides it
He always gives Cleo tips on artifacts, or asks her to escort travelers through the Deadwood or around the realm if they’re important to keep her busy
He’s not the head of House Starfury, but he’s still pretty involved in elven politics, mainly focused on opening up Undermount, educating people on the elven empire and spreading the wealth and stuff
He’d go before Cleo, just running out of life force after all his magic
After Tyril passes, Cleo’s just done, he was the only thing giving her purpose, and she’s spent decades cleaning up the Deadwood as best she can
Threep’s joined her after Tyril’s funeral, staying with her for a few days and how following her out into the forest
She walks out to the clearing they saw the unicorn at and stops right on the edge, sitting down and setting up a purification ritual
She’s known how for years, she learned after Nia passed so she could spend some of her life completing one of her dreams like a sap
She clears out the darkness from a lot of the Deadwood to drain the last of her life force, stumbling over to a tree and sliding down to the ground, her back pressed against the bark
Threep flutters into her lap, her nails scratching behind his ears as he licks her chin comfortingly, a final goodbye
Her breathing starts heavy, growing slow as her chest feels far more hollow than it did a moment ago, and her eyelids slowly grow heavy
A breeze brushes her hair, stirring her awake. The lake’s shimmering before her, bright and magical as she stumbles to her feet, Threep gone from her lap
The Deadwood’s healed, more than she could possibly have managed on her own, and she has so much more energy now than when she fell asleep
She trips through the trees, running for what feels like hours until she’s back at the cabin, the stone bright against the trees as it sits, whole again after all her effort
She shoulders the front door open, freezing when she sees the fireplace, or rather, what’s before the fireplace
Nia’s there, her back to the flickering flames as she smiles, cheeks redder than the curls falling down her shoulders
And Cleo doesn’t stop running, tackling Nia into a hug and squeezing with all she is, tears dripping down her chin as she laughs, carefree and disbelieving and happy. So, so happy, for the first time since she last saw that smile

In this hell Daryl Dixon X Reader part 2/??
Hey guys! Part one received so much more feedback than I was expecting!! Thank you all so much!! :)
And a big thank you to @samnoel3 for giving me one of the ideas for this chapter! Hopefully you all enjoy this part!
Warnings- Blood tests, medical procedures, swearing?
Tumblr media
“(Y/n)... (Y/n), wake up.” I felt a hand on my shoulder, making me jump as I open my eyes. “It’s just me, calm down.” Daryl spoke next to me. Turning my head I look at him. “How long have I been asleep for?” “About 45 minutes.” “Damn, I didn’t mean to doze off, sorry.” He just shrugged in response. Returning my head to rest against the window, I watch the trees.
Greens, yellows and browns all slightly blurring together as we trail behind the others along the deserted road, with the occasional walker along the side, stumbling, looking for its next feast.
Turning back towards Daryl, I brung my legs up and rested my knees to my chest.
“Stop ya staring.” “I’m not-“ “Hey everyone, we’re almost there. We have about 10 minutes left on the road.” Rick spoke through the static of the radio.
A comfortable silence fills the truck. The only sound i can hear is the wind from outside of Daryl’s open window, his arm resting on its frame.
“What do you think we’re going to find?” “I don’t know.” “Maybe the CDC is fine, and the scientists are already working on a cure for whatever this is.” “Nah, Probably just a bunch of pricks in white coats.” “Let’s try to be positive about this. They could have food, water and shelter for us, even medicine.” “Don’t get ya hopes high.” I sighed, putting my hands over my face. “I know. It would be too good to be true.”
It didn’t take much longer for us to reach our destination. Everyone pulled up outside of a giant curved building. Getting out of our vehicles, surrounded by an urban battlefield. Dead soldiers were everywhere, some shot in the head, others were half-eaten corpses, the streets were littered by mass death.
Other bodies lined the steps to the CDC. They obviously went hand to hand with the countless walkers filling the street. A massacre on both sides.
I looked around, Carol was holding Sophia close, Lori next to Carl taking in the horrific sight. Jacqui stood, staring in shock, Dale shaking his head in disbelief. Glenn was looking at Rick and Shane, then he looks at T-dog as if to ask “what now?” Carl was watching his father who was taking everything in. I felt Daryl pull me slightly closer.
A gunshot rang out, making the group jump. I turned to the source, looking at Shane who had fired his gun at a walker. We all started to run to the entrance of the CDC as more walkers made their way toward us. Rick started to press buttons to the doors, but it's all dead. As a last resort, he pounds on the door. "There's nobody here." T-dog sighed. I took in the situation that we are now in, the doors are locked, no one is in there, it's going to be dark soon and were surrounded by the dead.
"You led us here! The hell were ya thinking?" Daryl yelled. "He made a call." Lori defended her husband. "He led us to a dead end." Carol said "What are we going to do now?" Dale asked "Dammit!" T-dog sighed. "We should have gone with Morales." Carol said in frustration. "Carol...." Lori sighed. "There is nothing here." Dale sighed. "You're done man, I ain't listening to you!" Daryl scoffed. Rick stood frozen. "Let's not start turning on each other." Shane tried. "This was a mistake." Jacqui stated. "Since that guy showed up it's been one mistake after another." Daryl snapped at Shane. Rick kept banging on the doors. "Man! There is nobody here!" T-dog yelled at rick. Everyone started yelling at Rick, trying to get him away from the doors. “Guys! This isn't going to work!" I yelled at them getting their attention. "We have to go someplace safe!" I said once they were all looking at me. "I agree." Carol said. We started to walk away.
"Did you see that? The camera moved!” Rick stated. He walked up to the camera and started to talk. "If you can hear me...please, help us. We have women and children, no food and no where to go, if you don't let us in, you're killing us... Please." Shane pulled rick back. "Maybe the cameras are still working, but everyone's dead." Shane said. "No, Shane, the cameras here only work if someone is controlling them. Dad taught me this when he took me to work with him before he died." I piped up, looking at the camera. "But they won't open up, it isn't any use." We gave up and started to leave.
As soon as we reached the stairs, we heard the doors open, as we turned around we were met with a bright light.
We all readied ourselves with a weapon, but walked in with caution. "Daryl, you cover the back." Shane ordered "Hello?" One of us called out. "Watch those doors, watch for walkers." Dale said. I smiled as the blast of the cool air conditioning hit me, breathing out a chuckle.
"Hello?" An unfamiliar voice broke out. I seen tense up and he raised his crossbow. Everyone looked toward where he was now pointing the crossbow, holding their guns up.
A man in his mid 40's entered, aiming a gun at us, He had short strawberry blonde hair and green eyes, he was sporting black pants and a grey tee.
"Anybody infected?" "One of our group was..he didn't make it." Rick replied. "Why are you here? What do you want?" The man asked "Well, I for one just want safety!" I shot now slightly exasperated. Lori chuckled. Rick glanced at me..
"A chance. We all want a chance." "Well that's asking an awful lot these days.." The man said "I know." Rick answered. There was a moment of silence, our group was watching him intensely, him watching back. "You all submit to a blood test, that's the price of admission " He told us. "We can do that." Rick said. I let out a shaky breath. "You got stuff to bring in, do it now. Once that door closes it stays closed." He told us sternly. Daryl, Glenn ,Rick and Shane ran outside and got some stuff. Once they returned the man pressed the button.
"Vi, seal the main entrance, kill the power up here." He ordered. The door had sealed up and the power went down. "Rick grimes" Rick had told him "Dr Edwin Jenner." He got us to follow him into an elevator, a huge one at that. "Do doctors always go around packing heat like that?" Daryl asked. "Well there were plenty left lying around, so I familiarised myself. Besides, you all look harmless enough." He said. "Except you. I'll have to keep my eye on you." He smiled at Carl, making him laugh slightly.
Once the elevator stopped, we walked out, into a white bricked hallway. "Are we underground?" Carol asked. "You claustrophobic?" "A little." She answered "Try not to think about it." It was silent for a few minutes until we reached a dark room. "Vi, bring up the lights in the big room." Jenner called out. The room was as he described... big. "Welcome to zone five." "Where is everybody? The other doctors? The staff?" Rick asked. "I'm it. it's just me here." "What about the person you were speaking with? Vi?" Lori asked "Vi, say hello to our guests, tell them.... Welcome" Jenner said looking at us all. "Hello, guests. Welcome." A female AI Boomed through the room. "I am all that's left." Jenner said sadly. We were all silent for a moment. "I'm sorry." He said. I stood forward. "Why are you sorry?” I asked. "I know that you guys were expecting more people, follow me." He replied stalking off. We all followed and entered the room he had led us to.
Everyone has had their blood taken, besides myself and Andrea. "Your up." Jenner said looking at me. I nodded and sat down. "I take it you don't like needles?" "They aren’t my favourite thing." I replied in a whisper. "Just close your eyes and relax." Jenner instructed I felt the sting for a short while and got up, moving to sit next to Lori.
"What's the point? If we were infected we'd all be running a fever." Andrea stated. "I've already broken every rule in the book letting you in here, let me just at least be thorough." He smiled. "All done." He stated. Andrea got up and almost fell. "Are you alright?" "She hasn't eaten in days.. None of us have." Jacqui answered Jenner. He smiled softly. "Come with me."
We did as instructed and we followed him to a room with a decently big wooden table in the middle surrounded by chairs. "All of you sit." We did as instructed and after about 10 minutes he served plates with cooked vegetables and small steaks. "Here you go." He said after serving all of us. "Thanks." I smiled. Him nodding in response. I sat in between Shane and Jenner. Daryl standing up with Glenn. I was laughing and smiling among everyone else, when Lori agreed to have some wine. "You know in Italy, children have a little bit of wine with dinner." Dale spoke pouring Lori a glass. "And France." He added "Yeah, well when Carl is in Italy or France he can have some then." She said glancing at me smiling then looking to her husband. "What's it gonna hurt? Come on. Come on." Rick laughed. Lori smiled slowly, lifting her hand off of Carl's glass, letting Dale pour some in. "There you are young lad." Dale smiled handing him his cup. We all looked towards Carl, watching as he took his first and only sip. "Eeew!" He exclaimed pushing the glass away. Making us all laugh. "That's my boy. That's my boy." Lori smiled patting his shoulder. "Good choice" I chuckled. "Yuck, that tastes nasty." He said shaking his head. "Stick to soda pop there, bud." Shane said. "Not you Glenn." Daryl spoke up. "What?" "You're drinking little man, I wanna see how red your face can get." Daryl laughed. Making Glenn look away laughing as we all joined in.
"Why aren't you having any?" Jenner whispered in my ear. "I've never been a big drinker." I smiled. "It's also not good for the baby." I whispered into his ear. He looked stunned for a second. "I wasn't sure." "I am." “I take it Daryl is the father?” "Yeah. He is.. I am lucky to have him." "No, He is lucky to have you." I looked at my plate, a small blush appearing. “I have some old medical equipment in storage, I can bring some out tomorrow if you would want me to. Give you a proper more thorough check up.” “That’s really nice, I don’t expect you to-“ “It’s no hassle.” I heard the tinker of a glass, we looked at rick. "It seems to me we haven't thanked our host properly." Rick announced. "He is more than just our host." T-dog spoke a bit tipsy. "Hear, hear!" Dale spoke. We all raised our glasses to Jenner. "Booyah!" Daryl said raising the bottle he adopted. Rick whispered a thank you. Jenner nodding in response. "Thank you Jenner. For letting us stay here, and for feeding us." I laughed. "It's no problem." He said sipping his wine.
"So when are you gonna tell us what the hell happened here doc?" Shane asked. "All the- All the other doctors figuring out what happened, where the hell are they?" Shane added. "We're celebrating Shane, we dont need to do this now." Rick spoke "Woah, hang on a second. That's why we're here, right?" Shane asked. "This was your move, supposed to find all the answers. Instead we found him." Shane scoffed. "We found one man. Why?" He asked again. The room went silent. "Jenner you don-" I tried "Well, when things got bad, a lot of people just.... Left. Went off to be with their families. And when things got worse, when the military cordon got overrun, the rest bolted." Jenner said. "Every last one?" Shane interrupted. "No, Many couldn't face walking out the door. They... Opted out. There was a rash of suicides. That was a bad time." Jenna finished "You didn't leave. Why?" Andrea asked. "I just kept working. Hoping... To do some good." "Way to kill a good mood Shane." I said venom in my words. "Dude, you are such a buzz-kill, man." Glenn stated. Everyone sat eating in silence. "Everyone, i'll show you to where you all can sleep." Jenner said standing up.
He led us to a hallway. "Most of the facility is powered down, including housing, so you'll have to make do here. The couches are comfortable, but there are cots in storage if you'd like them. And there's a rec room down the hall that you kids might enjoy. Just don't plug in the video games of anything that draws power. Same applies if you shower, go easy on the hot water." He finished walking away. Glenn looked over to T-dog. "Hot water?" Glenn asked smiling. "Well, that is what the man said." T-dog answered. "I found you a room." Jenner said  leading me into a room that had a futon folded out with blankets and pillows. "I hope you will be comfortable." "Jenner as long as I have pillows i'll be fine. And thank you." He nodded his head and walked away. I look over to see Daryl walk over. "What did he want?" He sniggered. "Nothing, he was being friendly, that's all." "A little too friendly." He mumbled. "What was that?" I asked. "I saw ya flirting at dinner." He snapped. I shook my head and scoffed. "You know what, think what you want to. I am having a shower." I said grabbing a towel and pushing past him.
I entered the bathroom and got into the shower. I felt the warm droplets of water run down my body. I closed my eyes and relaxed. After a minute my body tensed up as I felt someone put their arms around my waist from behind. "He was flirting with ya." "Daryl...” He went to say something but I butted in. "You know, you don't have to be jealous of Jenner, I'm having YOUR baby. Not his. I am YOURS. Not his." I said turning around and giving him a small peck. He kissed back. "Here, let me wash your back."  He said turning me around and putting soap on my back then rinsing it off. "I'll do yours." I did the same thing. We got out and dried ourselves getting dressed, then exiting the bathroom. “Goodnight everyone." I called out, getting a chorus of responses back. Daryl and I went to our room and shut the door. I laid back on the futon, watching curiously as Daryl locked the door. “What are you doing?” “Making sure we ain’t gonna get interrupted.” He stalked over. “Ohhh, and what is so important that needs no interruptions?” I played along as he sat down. “You know what.” He smirked as he crawled his way over to me.
I woke up the next morning, looking over at the clock on the wall reading 9:00 am, Daryl still sound asleep. I got up and changed into my jeans, pulling on a black singlet top. I quietly put my boots on making sure not to wake Daryl. I unlocked the door and walked out to where we had dinner last night, to see Lori, Carl, Rick, Glenn, Dale and Jacqui were seated. "Just in time to have some amazing powdered eggs, cooked by T-dog." Lori smiled. "Thanks." I said sitting down as he put some on a plate for me. I looked over to Glenn and saw him hanging over his plate, groaning in disgust. "Take it you won't drink again." I chuckled. "Shut up, you're lucky, you didn’t drink." Glenn looked up with a small smile. "I've never been a big drinker.”
"Hey." Shane said walking into the room. Everyone greeted Shane but me. I ate a little bit of food and got up and left before Shane could even talk to me. "Shane. I'll go." I heard Lori say standing up. I heard footsteps running toward me. "Come with me honey." Lori said guiding me to her room. She sat me on the lounge with her. "What was that about?" She asked. "Shane, his behaviour last night... He made Jenner talk about something that had obviously hurt him. Like cant he learn to not be so self centred?" "Honey, He is your brother, he was asking that stuff to protect you and to protect the group. But the way he said it and the way he made it come out was I’ll admit rude." I nodded my head. "How'd you sleep?" Lori asked me smirking. "Yeah, Fine. Why?" I looked at her face, she was trying to keep a straight face. "Oh god!, were we loud?" "No, I walked past and heard it. But I was the only one awake, I checked for you. Just be happy Shane didn't hear, otherwise the door would be broken." She chuckled. "Come on, let's go back, or the others will think something's up." I nodded and started to walk when I started to bolt for the bathroom. I ran in and hovered over the toilet, throwing up everything I've eaten in the past 24 hours. After a few minutes of torture, I got up, flushed the toilet, went to the basin and rinsed my mouth out, wiping my face. "Let me help you." I heard Lori say, helping me get up. I looked at Lori. "Thanks." She nodded.
We walked out slowly to the dining area. "Sit down." "You okay?” Everyone asked. “Im just Peachy." I smiled softly. "What's for breakfast?" Daryl asked walking out. "Have the rest of mine.” I said handing him my plate. "I can't eat it. T-dog it's not the eggs, thank you so much, but the baby just can't stand it." "It's all good." He smiled. I looked at Daryl to see him already half done with the plate. “Good Morning." Jenner said walking into the room grabbing coffee. "Hey doc." “Good morning." I smiled.
"Doc, I don't mean to slam you with questions first thing." Dale piped up "But you will anyway." "We didn't come here for the eggs." Andrea stated. "Guys. He just woke -" "It's alright. Come on." He said taking his coffee to go. We followed him to the big room 'zone five' as he called it. "Vi, give me a playback of TS19." "Playback of TS19" Vi responded.
The screen turned on, with an X-ray of a head on it. "Very few people got a chance to see this." It focused more on the brain. "Is that a brain?" Carl asked looking at Jenner. "An extraordinary one, Not that it matters in the end." Jenner replied. "Vi, take us in for EIV." "Enhanced internal view" Vi replied. The video moved so that the person was laying down, Then it went into the brain. "What are those lights?" Shane asked looking at the flashing lights moving from the brain stem. "It's a persons life, experiences, memories, it's everything. Somewhere in all that organic wiring, all those ripples of light, is you. The thing that makes you unique and human." Jenner explained. "You don't make sense ever?" Daryl asked. "Those are synapses, electric impulses in the brain that carry all the messages. They determine everything a person says, does or thinks from the moment of birth to the moment of death." Jenner explained more. "Death? That's what this is? A vigil?" Rick asked. "Yes, Or rather the, Playback of the vigil." Jenner replied. "This person died? Who?" Andrea asked. "Test subject 19. Someone who was bitten and infected, and volunteered to have us... Record the process… Vi, scan forward to the first event." "Scanning to first event." It took us back to  where the test subject was laying down, but the stem of the brain all black. "What is that?" Glenn asked. "It invades the brain like meningitis. The adrenal glands haemorrhage, the brain goes into shutdown, then the major organs, then death." The subject stopped moving and the whole brain was black. "Everything you ever were or ever will be… Gone." Andrea put her head down, I walked up to her and gave her a side hug. "Is that what happened to Jim?" Sophia asked. "Yes." Carol admitted. I lost tears as well as Andrea did, for all of the people we lost. "She lost somebody two days ago, her sister." Lori spoke up. Jenner walked over to us. "I lost somebody too. I know how devastating it is... Scan to the second event." "Scanning to second event." "Resurrection times vary wildly. We have reports of it happening in as little as three minutes. The longest we heard of was eight hours… In the case of this patient, it was two hours one minute and seven-seconds." We looked back to the screen. From the core of the brain little red flickers were spread out across the stems of the brain. "It restarts the brain?" Lori asked. "No, just the brain cell." Jenner responded. "Basically it gets them up and moving." Jenner finished. "But they're not alive." Rick said "You tell me." Jenner said. "It's nothing like before. Most of that brain is dark." Rick answered "Dark, lifeless, dead. The frontal lobes, the human part, that doesn't come back, the 'you' part. It's just a shell, driven by a lifeless instinct." Jenner finished. I looked back up at the screen to see something tear thought the subjects head. "God! What was that?" Carol asked. "He shot his patient in the head. Didn't you?" Andrea asked. "Vi, power down the main screen. And the work stations." Jenner ordered. "Powering down main screen and work stations." "You have no idea what it is, do you?" Andrea asked. "It could be microbial, viral, parasitic, fungal." Jenner stated. "Or the wrath of god." Jacqui said, tears brimming in her eyes. "There is that." Jenner agreed "Somebody must know something. Somebody somewhere" Andrea answered. "There are others right? Other facilities?" "There may be some... People like me." Jenner stated. "How can you not know?" Rick asked "Everything went down. Communications, directives, all of it, I've been in the dark for almost a month." Jenner said calmly. "So it's not just here? There's nothing left anywhere. Nothing, That is what you're really saying, right?" Andrea asked Jenner stayed silent. Andrea scoffed. "Jesus..." Jacqui sighed. "Man, I'm gonna get shit faced drunk again." Daryl sighed "Dr Jenner, I know taxing for you, and I hate to ask one more question, but... That clock. It's counting down, what happens at zero?" Dale asked. We all exchanged looks and then waited for his answer. "The... Basement generators, they run out of fuel." "And then?."Rick asked. Jenner wouldn't respond. "Vi, what happens when the power runs out?" Rick asked. "When power runs out, facility-wide decontamination will occur." We all exchanged looks. Glenn, rick, Shane and T-dog went to find fuel and to check it all out.
Jenner looked over at me, and motioned his head back to follow him. I grabbed Daryls arm and dragged him along. He led us to what looked like an office, with paper strewn across the desk. “What do ya want?” Daryl asked once we entered. “I’m bringing you guys both in for a more thorough check up on your Foetus.” Daryl raised his brow. “That means baby.” Jenner corrected. “I know what it means.” Daryl growled in response. Causing Jenner to raise both hands in Defense. “Daryl. Please.” I looked at him. “Fine.” He shook his head and pouted. Jenner opened the door to a conjoining room, dragging in a bulky monitor and ultrasound system. “It’s a bit old and outdated, but it will still get the job done.” He chuckled as he shut the door once again. “Just sit on the recliner, and recline back, lift your shirt and I bottom your jeans.” Jenner instructed, I sat in the recliner and did as instructed. “Hold on a second!” Daryl tried to cover me. “Daryl, calm down. I only need access to the abdomen. This is professional. I can not do this if you prevent me from doing so.” Jenner responded. Daryl only huffed in response. “I’m sure you know what comes next?” “The gel. I should brace myself? Probably will be cold.” He nodded. Gently he squirted the gel onto my abdomen, then rubbed the wand over it. On the screen we seen a grey area, with a little black area in the centre. “What’s that? Is that the baby?” Daryl asked. “That‘s the gestational sac, and that tiny little bean is the baby. It looks like you’re 5 weeks along, I’m no gynaecologist but that little flicker there is a heartbeat, it’s to early to hear it but you can see it.” I looked up to see Daryl staring at the screen. He was unreadable, as always, but looking at him in this moment, all I can feel is love and adoration. “Everything seems to be fine. And we’re done.” “Thank you so much for this. It means a lot.” “Your welcome.” He nodded, taking the monitor back. I wiped the gel off of my stomach, feeling happier than I probably should be considering what’s going on in the world. “It feels more real now.” I stared as I did my button back up and moved my shirt back down. “Yeah.” Daryl sighed. “I need to speak with the mother to be.” Jenner stated. “I’ll meet ya back at the room okay?” I asked Daryl, in response nodded and left.
“What’s happening Jenner?” “I spoke to your leader last night, Rick?” I nodded. “No matter how you die, you always come back as one of them.” “What?” “Everyone is infected... This pregnancy is dangerous. We can’t be sure that the baby is or isn’t infected.” “Jenner?” “It’s an air-borne virus. We can’t be sure that the infection hasn’t already or won’t infect the baby.” “Whatever it is that you’re insinuating, please-“ “What happens if it dies in your womb and it is infected? It could tear you apart from the inside. What if you die before it’s born? You’d kill it. I can help you get rid of it.” “Look I appreciate everything Jenner. But I’ve got to go.” I replied. “There’s no way that this ends good.” He called out as I left the room. I found an unused area. Sitting down I let out the breath I didn’t even know I was holding. I gave myself 15 minutes to calm down before meeting Daryl back in our room.
I laid on the bed reading a book, with Daryl sitting up drinking. The air conditioning stopped and the lights all turned off. "Daryl?" "Yeah." "What just happened?" I asked putting the book aside, getting up off the bed and going into the hall. I saw Jenner walk down towards my room. Everyone asking questions and following behind him. "What's going on? Why'd it turn off?" Daryl asked hanging out the door, bottle in his hand, Jenner stealing it from him. "Energy Is being prioritised" Jenner said. "Air isn't a priority? And light?" Dale asked. "It isn't up to me." Jenner started. "Zone five is shutting itself Down." Jenner continued. I looked into Daryl's eyes, I know he could see the worry my eyes held. "What the hell does that mean?" Daryl asked. Jenner ignored him. "Hey, man, I'm talking to you! What do you mean Shutting itself down? How can a building do anything?" Daryl asked "You'd be surprised." Jenner said. We looked over the railing.
"Rick!" Lori called. We all followed Jenner down the stairs to where rick and the others were. "Jenner! What is happening?" Rick asked. "The system is dropping down all non-essential uses of power. It is designed to keep the computers running to the last possible second. As soon as we approach the half hour mark, right on schedule." Jenner said. It was all silent then Jenner gave daryl back the bottle. "It was the French." Jenner randomly said. "What?" Andrea and I asked. "They were the last ones to hold out as far as I know. While our people were bolting up the doors and committing suicide in the halls, they stayed in the labs working until the very end, they thought they were close to a solution…” "What happened?" Asked Jacqui. "The same thing that is happening here. No power grid. Ran out of juice. The world runs on fossil fuel. I mean, how stupid is that?" "Let me tell you." Shane started getting aggravated. "To hell with it Shane, I don't even care! Lori get our things. Everybody, We're getting out of here now!" Rick ordered. An alarm started sounding. "30 minutes til decontamination." Vi said. "Doc, what's going on here dammit?" Shane asked "Everybody! Get your stuff! Let's go now!" Rick yelled "Let's go!" T-dog said. I was with Lori  and Carl when we ran to the exit when it slammed down, Carl pulling me back just as it started to. "Did he just lock us in? He just locked us in!" Glenn started to panic. "Carl!" "Mom!" "You son of a bitch!" Daryl yelled running at Jenner. "Shane! Shane!" Rick yelled. “No! Stop! Don't!" Shane yelled at Daryl. I started slowly walking over to where Jenner was, as I heard screaming and yelling. "Jenner, open that door now!" Rick demanded. "There's no point."  Jenner replied. "Everything topside is locked down, the emergency exits are sealed." "Well, open the damn things!" Dale yelled "That's not something I control. The computers do. I told you once that front door closed it wouldn't open again you heard me say that. It's better this way." Jenner stated. "What is? What happens in 28 minutes?" Rick asked. "What happens in 28 minutes?" He yelled loudly to Jenner "Do you know what this place is? We protected the public from very nasty stuff! Weaponised small pox! Ebola to wipe out half of the country! Stuff you don't want getting out! Ever!" Jenner finished screaming. "In the event of a catastrophic power failure and a terrorist attack. For example, HITs are deployed to prevent any organisms getting out." "HITs?" Rick asked. "Vi-" "It's High-impulse thermobaric Fuel-air explosives." I answered. Everyone looked at me. "It consists of a two stage aerosol ignition that produces a blast wave of significantly greater power and duration than any other known explosive except nuclear. The vacuum pressure ignites the oxygen between 5000 and 6000 degrees and is useful when the greatest loss of life and damage is desired." Vi finished. "It sets the air on fire. No pain, and end to sorrow. Grief, Regret, Everything." My head turned and I looked at Daryl. He threw the bottle at the door. "Open this damn door!" I looked to Jenner, then over to Lori who held Carl protectively in her arms, scared. My hands went to my stomach and rested there for a brief moment. I started to think.
I'll never get to see my baby, never get to hold it. Watch it grow up or anything. After everything he said to me, it’s all put in perspective. When he said he could help get rid of it this is what he meant?
I walked over to Jenner. "Jenner, please open the door. Do it for me! I want my baby to live. Sophia and Carl are too young to die!" He just ignored me. My hands collided with his chest, pushing him back, causing Shane to grab me and move me away. "Jenner don't ignore me! Test subject 19 was your wife!” I yelled from Shane’s arms. Causing everyone to shut up for a moment. “Now you're going to take away mothers as well as fathers! Daughters as well as sons! Sisters as well as brothers and wives as well as husbands! You're taking our choice away! Don't do this! It's not what you want! It's not what she would want!" I continued.
Shane gave me to dale, and he held onto me. He grabbed an axe as did, Daryl and started to hit the door. "You should have left it all alone, it would have been so much easier." Jenner said. "Easier for who?” "All of you, you know what's out there, a short brutal life, and an agonising death. Your sister, What was her name?" "Amy" "Amy, You know what this does, you've seen it. Is that really what you want for your wife and son?" Jenner asked Rick. "I don't want this!" Rick answered. "I can't make a dent." "Those doors were designed to withstand a rocket launcher." "Your head ain't!" Daryl stated going for him. I stood in front as the guys pushed him away. "Daryl!" "Daryl!" "Just back up!" "Daryl, he isn't worth it. " I told him. "You do want this…” Jenner said to rick. “You said you knew it was just a matter of time before everyone you loved was dead." He finished. "You really said that? After your big talk?" Shane asked. "I had to keep hope alive didn't i?" Rick answered. “There is no hope. There never was." "There's always hope, maybe not you but somebody, somewhere." "What part of everything's gone don't you understand?" Andrea asked. "Andrea…” "Listen to your friend she gets it. This is what takes us down. This is our extinction event." "Jenner! Listen to me! You don't have to do this." I said "This isn't right! You can't just keep us here!" Carol cried. "One tiny moment, a millisecond, no pain." "My daughter doesn't deserve to die like this!" "Wouldn't it be kinder? More compassionate to hold your loved ones and wait for the clock to run down?" I heard a gun click. My attention went to Shane, holding his rifle. "Shane no!" Rick pushed him away. "Out of my way Rick!" Shane yelled "Now you open that door or I'm gonna blow your head off! You hear me?" Shane yelled. "Brother, you do this, we'll never get out of here."Rick said "Shane! You listen to him!" Lori yelled. "If he dies, we all die!" Rick yelled as Shane screamed. Shane moved the gun and shot at the computers. "Shane!." Rick yelled. He wouldn't listen so Rick grabbed the gun and pinned him to the ground. "Are you done now? Are you done?" Rick asked. "Yeah, I guess we all are." Shane replied. It was silent for a few seconds
"I think you're lying..." Rick started. “What? " Jenner asked. "You're lying. About having no hope. If that were true you would have bolted with the rest taking the easy way out. You didn't. You chose the hard path. Why?" "It doesn't matter." "It does matter, it always matters. You stayed when the others ran. Why?" "Not because I wanted to. I made a promise." "Yeah, to your wife." "I'm surprised that (Y/n) guessed it. How'd you know?" "The way you looked at the footage. The ring on your finger and the picture in the office and in the room you gave Daryl and I. I'm not stupid, I connected the dots." I replied. "She begged me to keep going as long as I could, how could I say no? She was dying. It should have been me on that table. It wouldn't have mattered. She was a loss to the world. Hell, she ran this place, I just worked here. In our ripe old she was an Einstein, Me? I’m just Edwin Jenner. She could have done something about this, Not me." Jenner said “Your wife didn't have a choice. You do. That's... That's all that we want a choice, a chance." Rick said. "Let us keep trying as long as we can." Lori piped in Jenner looked at me. Then where my hands were gently against my abdomen. "Please Jenner." I said for everyone to hear. " I told you topside is locked down. I can't open those." Jenner said staring at us all. Happy tears started to form in my eyes. The door opened. And I walked to Jenner and kissed his cheek. "Thank you, goodbye." I turned and started to walk away. "You're one of the reasons I opened the door you know… You are exactly like my wife was." He smiled gently.
"Babe! Let's go!" Daryl yelled. I ran toward the exit and daryl grabbed my hand. "Come on! Move it! Move it!" Everyone yelled. Rick and Jenner talked for a minutes and them Rick ran toward us. "Come on! Four minutes left!" Glenn yelled. "Let's go Jacqui! " T-dog yelled "I'm staying! I'm staying sweetie." Jacqui said making T-dog to let go. "What? No!" I cried. "But that's insane!" T-dog said. "No! It's completely sane for the first time in a long time! I'm not ending up like Jim and Amy!" She cried. We all looked at her. "There's no time to argue, and no point. Not if you want to get out. Just get out. Get out!" She yelled. "Hey dog, come on, man. Come on! Let's go, come on!" Shane said grabbing him. "I'm staying too." I heard Andrea. "Andrea, no!" We looked at dale and he looked at us. "Just go! Go!" "Dale!" "Go!" He yelled again. "Come on!" Rick yelled as we all ran. We ran up the flights of stairs quick. "Get the doors open! Come on!" Shane yelled. "It doesn't work!" Glenn yelled. "Wait a minute! Try it!" T-dog said after pressing some buttons. "Daryl!" Shane yelled grabbing an axe and hitting the windows. Daryl next to him. "Stay close to us sweetie." Carol said to Sophia. "Dog forget it!" Shane yelled at t-dog T-dog screamed hitting the window with a chair. "Dog! Get down! Down!" Shane yelled at everyone pumping shots from the python at the window. "Jesus!" Shane exclaimed. "The glass won't break?" Sophia asked. "Rick I have something that might help!" Carol said going through her bag. "Carol, I don't think a nail file will do it." "Shane! Shut up!” I snapped "Look your first morning at camp, when I washed your uniform, I found this in your pocket." She said handing him a grenade. He took it. He pulled the pin and dropped it next to the window. "Oh sh..." Rick yelled running toward us. The grenade went off and  the window shattered.
We all ran out, the guys shooting the walkers that were stumbling towards us. We all made it to the vehicles, getting into them. I saw Andrea and dale duck behind a post. "Get down!" Daryl yelled. We both Ducked down in the truck, Daryl protecting my body with his. There was a shake, and I could hear the sound of glass breaking, I could feel the heat. “It’s clear.” Daryl sighed after slowly lifting himself off of my body. Looking up I see what was the CDC, up in flames, Andrea and dale got into the RV. Everyone in-front  started to drive once again. Daryl  followed carols Cherokee, Shane behind us.
Once we were on the road I felt Daryl's hand on my thigh. "What did that guy say to ya in there after he opened the door?" "All he said to me was I reminded him of his wife." Daryl scoffed, removing his hand. The rest of  the drive was quiet. The RV pulled over, at a station just out of town.
"Okay guys we need to ditch some vehicles and siphon gas out of the ones we're abandoning." Rick said. We all nodded and Daryl got Merle’s motorcycle off of the back of the truck, getting the fuel out of the truck that I have grown fond of. T-dog ditched his van, Shane left his jeep. “(Y/n), I don't think that the baby will like the motorcycle... So you're going in the RV with Dale, Glenn, Shane, T-dog and Andrea. Daryl you're covered. Carol, Lori and the kids with me in the Cherokee. Is there a Problem?" Rick asked. "Not at all.” I looked at Daryl, I walked over and kissed him. "Please, be safe." "You know I don't need to be." I rolled my eyes. "Daryl, you take the lead." I got into the RV and laid in one of the beds in the back, picking up the book from before and continued reading, Feeling the RV pull out and back onto the road. That’s when we left Atalanta... This time, for good. Series Masterlist Next Part

The Grave Robbing Thing
[cw for discussions of death, decomposition, gore, drugs, alcohol, and suicidal ideation]
Tumblr media
“So are we gonna talk about this?”
“About what?”
“You know, the whole grave robbing thing.”
“What about it?”
“Well it’s not exactly… ethical, is it.”
“When did you have time to study ethics? You’re like four months old. Dig faster. We only have so long before the groundskeeper wakes up.”
“I can't dig very fast with one arm.”
“It’s a real paradox isn’t it. Can’t dig with one arm, need to dig to get the arm. A real ouroboros. The snake eats its tail. The undead consuming the dead-dead.”
“Are you high?”
“Are you high?”
“Of course I am. My arm is rotting off.”
“It’s not rot. Rot is decay, caused by a foreign bacteria or fungi. As long as you keep your sutures clean and keep taking your medicine you shouldn’t have to worry about that for a good while. This is what we in the biz call the bloat stage, which starts when naturally occurring gut bacteria go from aerobic to anaerobic and... Okay well essentially, your body is eating itself. It’s a natural stage of decomposition for dead bodies.”
“But I’m alive.”
“In a philosophical sense, sure, but you’re made of dead tissue and by the looks of that limb I don’t think your bacteria knows the difference. For you the process is slowed but it’s not stopped. At least your head hasn’t shown any signs of deterioration so we can assume your brain is still very much in tact. If that changes, then, that’s a whole other story, but I guess we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it, hm? Actually that reminds me of another interesting paradox: the ship of Theseus. Ever heard of it?”
“No.”
“Okay so it’s like-”
“You know you could probably dig faster if you didn’t talk so much.”
“… Did I say something?”
“Never mind. Let’s just get this done.”
“You know nothing lasts forever.”
“Yeah.”
“This person, uh... shit, does that say ‘Jim’ or ‘Jon’? Jim. Jim Rothsfeld. He’d probably be honored to know his corpse was going to a good cause.”
“What makes it so good?”
“Are we really gonna do this, Lu? You want to turn around? Go home? I can amputate the arm but if you think I’ve got another substitute just lying around I regret to inform you you’re shit out of luck!”
“Don’t. Yell at me.”
“Okay. Okay.”
“Just, don’t yell at me.”
“… It is a good cause. Good because it’s necessary. And if Jim Rothsfeld couldn’t recognize that then maybe he doesn’t deserve the arm. Not like he’s using it now anyway. I can’t have you pussying out on me, Lu. Until I can figure something else out this is going to happen, and next time it might not be an arm, it might be your legs, or your lungs, or your heart. You were the one who wanted to talk about it, okay? You know me, I try not to get hung up on heavy stuff like that. I live in the moment.”
“Yeah, I know.”
“And for the record, if I ever- if it were me, I’d totally give you my arm.”
“You are high.”
“I’m not! I’m drunk!”
“You are?”
“I focus better when I’m drunk, and magic is tricky shit.”
“I don’t know if I like the idea of you doing surgery on me drunk.”
“I implore you to consider your fucking options. Besides I’ll be fine by the time we get back."
“God, you drove us here. Have you at least done something like this before?”
“Of course. Got my second doctorate in necromancy.”
“Really?”
“Ha. No. No, they don’t really go for that in most schools.”
“Yasmine, you’re a real piece of- oh shit.”
“Ooh did we hit coffin. Ah, feels like mahogany. Come on, help me with the lid. Don’t get shy now, you’re a big boy aren’t you?”
“I am big.”
“It looks like a perfect fit to me, Cinderella. Good and fresh too. You know, there’s a reason I wanted you along for this one.”
“I know. To dig.”
“Not just to dig, smartass. I just thought it’d be good for you to look at it. You need to get accustomed if we’re going to keep doing this.”
“Okay, well, I’m looking at it.”
“Get comfortable with it. Try- try talking to it.”
“You’re kidding me.”
“No, really, it’ll help. I used to talk to cadavers all the time when I was doing my first dissections. It makes the process easier. Go on, he's not going to hurt you.”
“… What do I say?”
“I don’t know, do what feels natural. Maybe thank him? For his ‘donation’, you know.”
“… Thank you, Mister Rothsfeld. I don’t think you can hear me but if you can, somehow, I hope you can understand. I hope… Yasmine I can’t do it.”
“Fuck off.”
“I’m serious, I don’t think it’s right. This is the Eternal Rest Cemetery. This was supposed to be his eternal rest.”
“He is resting! The sleep of the dead, so deep he can’t feel a thing. Look I’ll show you.”
“Don’t! Don’t… touch him. Just put him back. I don’t want to do this anymore.”
“Lu, look at me. Your body is dying. Piece by piece, cell by cell. Today it’s your arm, tomorrow-“
“Tomorrow my legs, my lungs, my heart, my brain, I know!”
“Do you wanna die! Answer me. Do. You want. To die. Or do you want to live.”
“I don’t know! I don’t think I even know what that means.”
“Okay. Fine. Then, think of it this way: do you want to watch the sunrise tomorrow?”
“I… yes?”
“Do you still want to sing at Georgie’s this Friday?”
“Of course I do.”
“And after that do you want to keep singing at Georgie’s? Do you want to go to farmer’s market and pet the jam lady’s dog again? Do you want to watch The Crow for the millionth time? Do you want to pick up pizza on the way home?”
“Yeah, I... yes. I do.”
“There you go. Your problem is, you think of life as this one big thing, and it’s not. It’s a bunch of itty-bitty things, little moments all sloppily patchworked together and, I’m gonna be honest, the final product is a fucking mess. Some moments are going to suck- like digging up bodies in the middle of the night, or waking up hungover the morning after- but if you want the good moments, those real good little moments, you have to be able to put up with it. You have to be willing to make sacrifices.”
“I kinda thought Jim was the one making sacrifices.”
“We all make sacrifices! Look, it’s not a perfect metaphor. You’re the writer, not me. Make a poem about it or something if it helps. For now, grab his legs."

HEAD SPACE
Take it or leave it
It's all up to you
Make it or break it
Like a living dead too
Little secrets, Little things
Lovers under the spot of the moon
Lovers under the rays of the sun
No other than me and you
You're the only pure in my pseudonym
You're my taste of wine
Nothing in you is wasted
And only to you I am out of defenses.
Only to you i can submit myself
Only to you my insecurity is concealed
I feel the comfort to ourselves
I am selfless and i surrender
So bright by your intellect
So genuine by yourself
So moved from being imperfect
So brave from embracing yourself
I got bunch of queries
Noone but you could answer
I got mind buggling mysteries
Noone but you can solve
Why begins and ends with why
How introduces and concludes with how
When anticipates and assumes with when
Who indentifies and confuses with who
Can we be together
My heart says yes
But my mind says no
Who to follow, who to listen
Can we last forever
My heart says stay
But my mind says go
Who to trust, who to believe
Can we love each other
My heart says follow your desire
But my mind says think righteously
Who to love, who to choose
Imagine me and you
In the verge of our emotion
There's noone but us
To depend on our motion
Tension is high
And so do I
My esteem becomes low
And may shape is below
You left me with this scar
It marked and was written in the star
Pain is hard to conceal
Butwhy am I looking for you, and still
Can't put into words just to show how I feel
Better say it loud but nobody hears
When you keep it to yourself they wanted to interfere
Don't cross the line, loosing control will never be
We know we're in good terms
That is something we can affirm
I hope God will leave some patterns
Thoughts are clear at our best, it shall be our turn
We could create our own fantasy
Happily are you and me
But villains are part of the story
And we have to wake up from reality
No matter what it takes,
I'll support you all the way,
You are the captain from sea or lake
Fly high, sail far, i will cheer every day
I'm gonna keep loving you
Without you I feel broke
Dark horses longing for me
Without you I feel doomed
Shadows of the past felt so grey
Laughters of the past felt so yellow
Sadness of the past felt so blue
Passion until today felt so red
I keep dreaming of you
Please undo all the loneliness
I keep thinking infinitely of you
Please gravitate me in you headspace
Figure me out and comprehend
I am craving all night to get apprehend
We're so inevitable yet with consequence
We're on the same side, but differ to assess
So damn obsess to be with you
But circumstances are not in our hands
We are raw, soon will grow
We are broad, our deepness will blow
If geniune, by then we'll realize
If toxicating, by then we'll escape
If suffocating, by then we'll fly
But why still stuck, cuz without you I'm paralized
You are to me my wonderwall
My medicine and my only cure
To my emptiness you're my overall
You give cover to my deepest hole
You're a poison runnin' thru my veins
A drug which could live me or die
I got the name you can refrain
But now it seems this name you can't regain
Let's sit all the time and communicate
This is the only tool and it's delicate
Lovers or friends as long as we can relate
I can be your anybody, I just don't need a duplicate
I'll do everything for you
Again and again just for you
Not gonna get tired nor give up
Whatever it takes i will stand up
I miss you, l'll be missin' you
All of your energy, and i really do
Don't push away, and i will crawl
You're my every breath and my inner soul
As long as your happy and smile
My heart will melt away
All the circumstances are worthwhile
Let's endure the moment and be gay
Fill me by a rose, flower of your mouth
Want nothing but to hear you out
Ignore all the roughs of their whereabouts
Loving in our ways is all we shout

The New Recruit
Part 11
The new recruit Masterlist
Taglist
Summary: The aftermath of you flat lining.
Word Count: 3180
Recap: The doctors stopped “she's gone”.
Steve rushed to your side “what are you doing? You can't stop!” he demanded.
“Sir, I'm gonna have to ask you to leave the room” one of the nurses said.
“revive her. Why are you stopping?” he asked the doctors.
“it's too late, Mr. Rogers” one of them informed him.
“it's not. I know it. Please! If you don't do it, I will and you know you can't stop me” it was a warning.
The doctor tried one more time, but the monitor screen still showed a flat line.
- - -
Steve held you hand and lowered his head, tears in his eyes. “Y/n I can't do this without you, Please! I- I need you. I, I lo-” before he could finish a couple of security guard came and dragged him out, he tried to resist but from the pain he was feeling, he wasn't strong enough. As soon as he let go of your hand and the guards let go of him at the door, a sound was heard. The sound of the monitor screen. Your heart was beating again. You've been gone for five minutes and now you're back.
Steve went down on his knees and looked up “Thank you”. It's funny how one moment can change everything. From tears of sorrow to tears of joy. From sadness, to happiness.
- - -
You have been in a coma from more than a week now. Some people didn't believe you'd ever wake up, but Steve was by your side every day. He believed that you could wake up any minute. The truth is, he blamed himself for what happened to you. After all, you almost died trying to save his life. He felt responsible for you, for the whole team. And losing you meant losing more than just a teammate.
You finally woke up and your vision was blurry, but you could see a figure nearby. You waited a few moments and concentrated until you could see clearly. It was Steve, he looked peaceful as he slept. You smiled at the sight of him.
“hey, you're awake” Tony said, standing in front of the door.
“how long have I been out?” you whispered not wanting to wake Steve up.
“ two weeks  give or take” he estimated.
“what? That long? It felt like a painful nap” you were surprised.
“you gave us a hell of a scare” he informed you.
Tumblr media
“sorry, wasn't my intention” you apologized.
“He felt guilty, the bullet was meant for him. He didn't leave your side, for one bit. We wanted to take turns, but he didn't want to rest until he made sure you were okay. I know you probably don't want him here, but take it easy on him. He cares about you” he added “I'll wake him up for you”.
“No. let him sleep. You said it yourself, he didn't rest. He probably needs it more than I do now. I'm not going anywhere”.
“alright, I have a meeting to attend to, but if you need anything shout, or tell Rogers, that's what he's here for” Tony left.
There was a book on the night stand next to you that Steve was probably reading. Since you weren't getting out of here any time soon, you started reading the book.
A few hours later, you were almost done and Steve has finally woken up.
“mornin' sunshine” you greeted with a teasing smile.
“Y/n? You're awake?”.
“No, you're just hallucinating” you joked.
He rubbed his eyes to see clearly “you're reading my book I see”.
“Oh that. Yeah, I had nothing else to do. He dies at the end and she returns to her husband” you spoiled.
“I haven't got to that part yet” he snatches the book from your hand.
“Me neither. I was almost there, but I watched the movie. It's with Leonardo DiCaprio if you even know who that is, it's great, you should watch it... if I could go back in time and live in another era, then I'd want to live in the roaring 20s, they were fun and people were happy and most importantly, they danced and sang the whole time” you expressed.
“That's not true. It's just what they show in movies. Life wasn't always that great. You love dancing?” he raised a brow.
“Yeeaah! I even took classes when I was younger... So, I heard you stayed here the whole time, huh?”.
“Stark told you?” he asked.
“yeah. You know it's alright, right?”.
“No, it's not. I couldn't leave you here alone, after what you did for me, after... what happened to you. Thank you Y/n”.
“Don't mention it”.
“I'm sorry for what happened. It should've been me” he apologized.
“Rogers, nothing happened. I'm fine, it's just a bullet wound” you reassured him.
“But it's not. You flat lined Y/n. Your heat stopped for five whole minutes. They tried resurrecting you, but it didn't work” he informed you.
“Then how am I here?”.
“I don't know. One moment I was sitting next to your lifeless body, the next moment I was dragged away to the door and suddenly you started breathing again” he explained.
“So I had a near death experience. That's cool” you tried to ease up the mood.
“It's not a joke Y/n. I thought I lost you” he admitted.
“right. Sorry!” you noticed how serious and worried he was.
Tumblr media
You removed the sheets off of your body and wanted to get up.
“Hey hey hey. What are you doing?” he quickly stood up from his chair.
“what does it look like? I've been comatose for almost two weeks. I need to get up. But just as you stood on your feet, you legs failed you and you were about to collapse. Luckily, Steve was already standing and caught you, as if he knew what was about to happen.
“Easy. I got you” he reassured you.
“what the hell happened to my legs? I can't feel anything” you were worried and your mind thought of worst case scenarios.
“I was getting to that part, but like always you can't wait. We didn't just lose you for five minutes. The bullet almost hit you spine and nerves. You won't be able to walk or feel your legs for a while, I'm sorry” he explained.
“so you're saying I'm stuck here for-, how many days?” you asked.
“we don't know yet. The doctors are doing the best they can. Stark made sure you got the best of care. It depends on how fast your body can heal” he added.
“Great!” you exclaimed.
“Also, they prescribed some medicine for you. For the pain, for the wound, the headaches and to help you walk again” he informed you.
“Is it necessary to take them?” you pouted.
“Yes,it is, unless you wanna stay here. Now, are we gonna do this like adults or are you gonna act like a child and make me force you?” he teased.
“alright, alright, chill. No need to get all controlling. So where are these pills?” you sat on the bed and wanted to move, even though you didn't know how to.
“Just relax, I'll get them for you” he brought you a glass of water and a bunch of pills and other medicines.
“some medicine? That's more like, they left nothing in the pharmacy” you exaggerated.
“Just take them, will you!” he demanded.
- - -
“you got a second?” Tony knocked on the door.
“it's not like I have things to do. Come on in” you invited.
“have you come to finally take me back?” you asked.
“unfortunately, that's not why we're here” Bruce declared.
Tumblr media
“then what's this about? If both of you are here together, then it's something serious” you guessed.
“it is. First of all, you're very lucky the bullet didn't hit your spine. One Millimeter and you would've been paralyzed” Tony informed you.
“we did some blood tests and tried to estimate your blood pressure when you used your powers. It's estimated 180/110 which would usually mean that you got-”
“hypertension. I'm a doctor Bruce, skip to the part where you tell me something I don't know” you reminded him.
“I was getting to that. When people get such high blood pressure at once, they usually have symptoms and it leads to many damages and problems. With you, it's like when you used your powers your blood pressure increased. I'm not an expert on powers like that, but I'd say a way to control your powers is by increasing your blood pressure. This is just a theory. We'll have to run more tests the next time you're able to use them” Bruce explained.
“I'll add something to your suit that will  allow us to see it” Tony added.
“We also found something else. But first I need you to answer my question, do you know how you activated your powers?” Bruce asked.
“No, I didn't even think it'll work” you told them.
“do you remember how you felt?” he questioned.
“not really, no”.
“I'm gonna need you to try harder. Tell me everything you remember about that day before the incident and the way you felt and why you did it”.
“uhm, okay. We were fighting some of the men, then we discovered that it was a trap and more men started to come. We were outnumbered and then I saw one of them about to shoot Rogers, so I tried to push him away and in doing so apparently my powers activated” you explained.
“why did you do it? And how did you feel the moment? Like what was the thing that told you have to jump in front of him?” Bruce was trying to get a specific answer out of you.
“I- uhm, I guess I wanted to protect him?” you weren't sure if that's the answer he was looking for.
“so you did that out of protection?” he wanted to make sure.
“yeah, I think. That's what I thought of. He was standing there and I had to save him. People need him more than the need me. He's a symbol of hope” you justified.
“See Stark, my theory's right”.
“what theory?” you asked.
“we- Banner had this theory, that your powers activated because you were trying to protect someone” Tony informed you.
Tumblr media
“so what you're saying is that I can actually use my powers if I wanted to protect someone” you were trying to get this straight.
“Basically, yeah. We looked at the data we have. Now we know that if your life was in danger, that your body can predict then your powers activate. We also know that when you're really angry that happens too and now I can say that when you're trying to protect someone it also works. What we've noticed is that your powers are strongest when you're trying to protect someone. It's dangerous when you're angry, because it's critical and uncontrollable. And when your body senses danger, it's just kind of reflexes. Your body does what is necessary to protect you and keep you from harms way. So it works as a defense. You have to be careful from now on and try to think about protecting people with less damaging, maybe you'll be able to control it” Bruce explained.
“Oh. I don't think it works like that. I already tried that long before told me, it doesn't work” you remembered when you tried to save your parents.
“That's the thing. What wasn't possible in the past, now is. Your body is constantly changing and your abilities are getting stronger  by the day. Not to worry you, but I'm not sure how much power you can take. I'm afraid it might just explode one day” Bruce warned.
“don't be such a pessimist” Tony ordered.
- - -
“good morning” Steve greeted.
“it was, until you woke me up” you whined.
“I cam to remind you to take your medicine” he handed you the pills and a glass of water.
“Jeez! You're not gonna go easy on me, are you?” you disliked that he never forgot to give you the medicine. You usually forgot to take them, but he was always there to remind you.
“so how was training? It's boring without me, isn't it?” you joked.
“I've never enjoyed it more” he teased.
Tumblr media
“how did it go with physiotherapy?” he asked.
“I was able to move a bit. I can stand now, but I have to put a lot of effort and energy on it. So that's a progress, I guess!” you stood up slowly.
“woah, woah, woah! What do you think you're doing?” he put his arm on yours, so you can lay your weight on him.
“what does it look like? I'm gonna take a shower” you informed him.
“Do you need any help?” he asked and there was awkward silence.
“with showering? No, thanks. I can do it myself” you commented.
“That's not what I meant... I could call Nat, if you want to” he elaborated.
“whatever Rogers. I prefer to go alone” he walked you to the bathroom's door.
“shout if you need anything. I'll be here”  he assured you.
You locked the door and were gonna take off your clothes. You started with your pants and it was easy to open the zipper, but you still didn't take it off, 'cause it needed you to move your body a bit, but you couldn't. After that, you tried to take off your shirt, but you felt a severe pain between your ribs and spine. You winced and yelped loudly.
“Y/n are you okay?” Steve knocked on the door.
“Yeah. I just felt something between my spine and ribs” you informed him.
“let me see, open the door” he demanded and you did, 'cause you wanted his help.
“what did you do?” he asked.
“I was trying to take off my shirt, but I can't. It hurts” you exclaimed.
“Here, let me help you” he offered and you accepted.
You put your hands up in the air, but not too high, 'cause even this hurt. He slowly raised your shirt until it completely out. You were standing in your bra and unzipped jeans. You didn't feel comfortable, but you needed to shower, now! He noticed the way you looked.
“relax. I'm not gonna look” he assured you and helped you get out of your pants. He then took off his shirt and damn, you couldn't take your eyes off of him. At least, now you were distracted from the pain.
He let the water run and made sure it was warm enough for you to get in. He put his hand out and you put your weight on him as he led you into the shower. He took the loofah and put some shower gel on it and started rubbing your body gently. You stood there and watched as he worked. He started by your shoulders and went down to your stomach and chest.  He then went on his knees and did your legs and you put your hands on his shoulders. You couldn't help but smile. Somehow the pain was gone or you were so distracted that you forgot about it. You liked this side of Steve, the caring, gentle side, when you're not arguing or on a mission.
“turn around” he ordered and you did. He was now centimeters away from you. You felt his chest touching your back slightly. Then, when he was done, he put shampoo on your hair and told you to close your eyes. You loved when someone played with your hair. He washed it out and you kept your eyes closed, enjoying the warm water and the head massage.
“and we're done” he got you a towel and got himself another. He wrapped it around you, and when you had something to cover you, you asked him to undo your bra. When he did, you remembered the time he did your corset and got goose bumps all over again.
When the both of you got out of the bathroom, Sam was standing in the room and was shocked at the view.
“You two- aren't-, are you?” he didn't wanna say it out loud.
“No, no, no. We're not. I just needed help showering and I was dressed, relax!” you informed him.
“I see” he smiled but was still suspicious.
Tumblr media
“did something come up?” Steve asked him.
“No. I just wanted to check on you” he told you.
“aw, that's sweet of you, but I'm fine. I should be able to get out by the end of the week” you added.
“that's good to hear. We missed you on missions” he admitted.
“I did miss you too and the missions. Can't wait to get back” you excitingly said.
“woah. Take it easy. Not so soon. Your body still needs time to heal. You won't be going on missions for the next few months” Steve told you, more like ordered you.
“what?! Hell no! I'm not staying in bed for a couple of months” you raised your voice.
“let's not argue about this now, please!” he begged, knowing that if you continued this would lead to the two of you fighting, like normal days . But he didn't want to exhaust you or get you angry.
“fine, but it's not over yet!”.
- - -
You were eating Pizza and watching Netflix in the evening, when Steve visited again. He came at least twice a day.
“evening y/n” he greeted.
“Rogers! I noticed you've been coming here a lot” you commented.
“someone has to make sure that you follow the doctor's instructions. Besides, I owe you” he told you.
“want a slice?” you offered.
“you shouldn't be eating that. You should eat healthy food to help you recover faster” he took the whole box.
“heeey! You know Pizza isn't gonna affect my wound right. It's safe to eat pizza, now give that back” you tried to take the box back, but he took it further away.
“Did you take your medication?” he asked.
“Oh, shit! No, I forgot, I’ll take it later” you weren't that interested in taking it.
“No take it now, it’s not a joke y/n. You out of all people should know that. You need it” he got worried and a bit mad at you, for not taking care of your health.
“Alright, alright, calm down. I’ll go get it” you were about to stand up.
“No, you stay her, I’ll get it” he went to get it and that was your plan. At least now you get one more slice.
“here you go, drink up. You need to stay hydrated. And I said no Pizza” he took the slice from your hand.
Tumblr media
“I feel like a sick child” you complained.
“Well you are kinda sick and you’re acting like a child, so...”.
You sulked and took the medicine.

Coping Mechanisms
I realized I’ve posted a lot of stories about abuse, but none of the things I’ve learned over my 40+ years to cope with or lessen the everyday pain one goes through. It’s so hard to struggle through each day all by yourself by sheer will - as it certainly feels like, somedays.
Tumblr media
You need to find some ways to deal with your pain! No matter how silly something may sound, if it works it’s not silly at all.
Obviously these won’t all work on everyone and some might irritate the heck out of you, because we’re all different. But if you put your own spin on them and think of what you enjoy to do, they could be helpful.
I’ll add to these if I remember more, since I’m in sort of a downward spiral (parents visiting soon) myself...
Onward, under the break...
Sleep when you need it
If you can, that is. I have too many issues to work and luckily we’ve managed so far with one income, although it sucks. This does mean that I can cater to my individual sleep schedule, however, and I use that to my advantage.
Don’t listen to neural typicals when they say “go to bed at the same time every night”. They’re normies! We’re not! Our bodies differ. You may actually benefit from doing as everyone will tell you, but a lot of us with mental differences benefit much greater from setting our own, very different (and rapid cycling) sleep cycles. I am currently sleeping from 6 am until 1 or 2 in the afternoon. I simply cannot sleep until then no matter what I do - and in a few weeks, I know this will change and I’ll be back to 10 pm or maybe 12. The difference is I get the sleep my body so desperately needs, and it helps greatly. I know not all of us can do this, but if you can - go for it. Try it out. You’d be amazed how good you feel after actually sleeping.
On the flip side, though:
Don’t oversleep
No, seriously. We all have the urge to “never get out of bed”, but you’re just gonna feel like crap and get a headache. Sometimes it’s cool to do this but, you know. Don’t abuse the treat.
Clean up (yourself & the home)!
Yeah. This is another one of those “you see it everywhere” tips, but that’s because it does work. Even if you can only manage to brush your teeth, change your undies, whatever, you’ll feel a bit better. Same goes for your house/apartment/room. Clean a tiny space if it’s all you can do - you’ll feel like you’ve got more breathing room.
Don’t EVER want to shower/bathe?
We’ve been there. It stinks, no pun intended. Personally, I had to think of a great way to encourage myself to get the heck out of bed and bathe - bath bombs.
And not just the regular kind! Glitter, rainbows, especially the ones with little toys inside, those are the best for days I don’t want to wake up and shower. You can even use them (as I just said) in the shower. They act like shower steamers and smell the rooms up nice, too.
Make a “Power Outfit”
It could be a comfy sweatshirt, or animal pajamas (kigurumi). Maybe it’s a really wacky pair of socks or a shirt that features your favorite TV star or character from a series. This could include accessories, like a fun hat, headband, furry tail, superhero cape - whatever will make you feel great. Don’t overthink it. It’s not “weird” to wear what makes you feel better, no matter what.
Hide/buy surprises for yourself!
Again, this is one I absolutely love to do. I scroll around through etsy and eBay a lot as another numbing yet engaging brain exercise, and I look for the cheapest “blind boxes” and/or “surprises”. Blind boxes are packages where you don’t know what’s inside until you open it, just like the name suggests. If this doesn’t bother you, it’s great for buying yourself a surprise. I use this as stocking stuffers for myself, too. Ha.
Of course this works for things like a book you want to read or a puzzle you’d like to do. Maybe even wrap it and leave it in the “gift pile”. Gift yourself when you need a pick me up!
Another of my favorite things are called “surprise balls”. They’re balls of crepe paper strips you unravel, and each layer has a surprise in it. You unroll the rainbow-colored strips, dropping toys, novelty items, etc, as you go. You can unroll one layer at a time or all of them! Find them at etsy, you can even get them customised.
Eat better. Exercise.
Trust me, I used to hate exercising (and when I say “hate”, I mean it). But it makes such a complete difference that I actually miss it when I skip on the weekends! Eating right (whatever is right for you, allergy-wise, dietary preferences, etc) also makes a huge difference. My mood lifted so high without the use of mind-altering drugs at all (societal approved medicine or otherwise).
Aromatherapy
I’ve seen so many people FREAK OUT about this.
Relax. It’s not meant as a “cure-all” no matter what the MLM pushers say, it simply helps a little. And for those of us with a lot of problems, “a little off the top” is really a big help. There are different types of scents for different mood enhancers, but my favorites (bubblegum, lemon, orange) are citrus based because that lifts depression. (Google this if you’re want - there have been tests done researching depression & aromatherapy).
Use wax melts, incense, whatever - and remember that candles can be bought on etsy & elsewhere that have surprises in them, too! You take out the charms and gems and such as the candle burns. Win-win for a little pick me up!
Rainbows
Yeah, I know. I have little crystal rainbow catchers in my windows so that my rooms fill with rainbows throughout the day. You’d be amazed at how many times a surprise rainbow from one of them lifted my heart and made me smile.
They’re not expensive, either. You can pop down to your local craft store and buy them in the beading section. Thread the bead with string or fishing line and hang it up on a suction cup or - really, wherever you can where light will catch!
Wait, did I mention craft stores..?
Arts & Crafts
I may be biased here, but there have been a lot of people that benefit from coloring books and crafts. They’re soothing, but be warned - they’re sometimes not good for mind-wanderers. If you’re “dump-trucking” bad thoughts, a mindless task will NOT be a good thing to do. I sometimes pair crafts and such with watching TV so that my mind and hands are busy at the same time.
Distractions!
Writing
*looks at self in reflection of monitor*
...yep.
This can help not only you, but others. It’s a relief to feel that you’re not alone, and when you come across something that helps you in a moment of need it’s awesome. It feels just as good to let it all out.
Write about your day, your past experiences, your hopes - anything. Heck, write fanfiction where the guys or gals or beings of your dreams help you get through things. Work it out. You don’t have to publish them. It will still feel good. And if you want to record your own in one area, or read specific fics, especially fanfics, I recommend the Archive (and not simply because I write there, ha)!
Television/Movies/Games
Same thing for movies, games & TV. They may distract you, but that means you may get the odd, sneaky thought that creeps in. We all hate those. Oh, and watch out for triggers! Good flipping butt, so many triggers!
There’s a site that helps for tons of triggers (including books, games, etc) called “Does the Dog Die”. I use it constantly when watching new programs or movies.
I personally do toon-fests where I watch so many cartoons, especially kiddie ones like “Molang” (so cute)! And I love using Minecraft for chilling out, game wise. Just, again... watch out for games. Man, they can be a pain sometimes if you’re getting frustrated. Stick with ones that you know are relaxing or you can play on “safe mode”. Don’t try to do a complicated campaign or grab that rare trophy/achievement when you’re stressed.
Music!
Yep. Music lifts spirits. And did you know if you search Google Play they’ve got free stuff? Like, a lot of it you might not want and there are a ton of religious readings, etc (if that’s your thing, then hooray)! But often I’ve found some really nice relaxing music with wave sounds, thunderstorms, etc. Of course you can buy albums too.
Voices
The same goes for voices. They can be very soothing and help you relax. There’s a whole bunch of Play apps where anime dudes and/or chicks talk you to sleep, or say comforting things. Well, technically, they’re real people speaking but there’s images of anime guys and gals. There are all types, so look around.
You could even ask your loved one to make a recording of them speaking to you or reading poetry, etc. It’s very helpful to hear a beloved voice - no matter who it is for you -- in times of need.
Cuddles
Pets, stuffed animals, blankets, fellow humans... hugs help sometimes. Sometimes you really don’t want to be touched, but that stuffed animal or pillow can give you just the right snuggle to lift your mood.
Free stuff!
Every once in awhile I use a throwaway email and go freebie hunting on the internet. A lot of places will give you stickers, samples, and all sorts of stuff for free. If you have a PO Box or don’t mind giving out your address, this works so well. Mail surprises are the awesomest.

Curtain Call- Part 1
requested by @maya-fey
pairing: winona/wigfrid
summary:
Winona has been surviving all by her lonesome, and seems to be doing just fine for herself. However, after crossing paths with old friends, she promises them her protection. When she decides to add herself to their party, she is soon informed that there is one member of their group that she has never met on any previous "wake-up". The newcomer is valiant, strong, and overwhelmingly pretty in a way that leaves Winona with a longing heart for the first time in over ten years.
However, that's not all. Winona knows without question that she recognizes Wigfrid from somewhere before all this. As the images grow clearer in her mind, it begs the question--could Winona be the key needed to unlock Wigfrid's memories and uncover why she was brought to the Constant in the first place?
With a bright lantern in one hand and Abigail holding the other, Wendy lead the way through the woods. Daybreak wouldn't be coming for another few hours, yet she had set out with Webber on a midnight misadventure. The latter, however, seemed to be in the middle of voicing some doubts about the excursion.
"Wendy, are you sure this is a good idea?" Webber whispered, their voice rising a bit with anxiousness. "What if the grown-ups find out we left camp without them? We're gonna get in trouble!"
Wendy shushed them, before continuing on into the gloom. "Keep your voice down, if you're so afraid of that. We're still rather close to camp. We have to-"
"But they're gonna wake up and see our empty beds!" Webber interjected. "Dr. Wickerbottom doesn't even sleep-she's probably going to walk over to our tent and see that it's empty and then she's never gonna trust us to go out on our own!"
"Don't be ridiculous. We'll surely back before anybody notices," she said, before turning her head to Webber for a quick moment. They were shaking like a leaf. "… Please don't tell me you're so scared that you were planning to run back and tell them about the flash."
Every hair of theirs was on end, sticking out and making them look like a spooked cat. "I-I-I won't do that. We're not tattletales!" Webber replied defensively, but their fearful shudders were telling a different story entirely. They couldn't stop staring at the darkest shadows of the thicket, silently wondering if there were thousands of horrible monsters inside there, only waiting to jump out and attack.
Wendy walked onwards, choosing to disregard their fright. "Webber, keep your wits about you. I need you to summon your bravery right now. This is to protect the adults, remember?" she said, before pausing to address Abigail. "Sister, may you keep him company?"
The translucent figure beside Wendy let go of her hand, stopping to walk (float?) beside Webber instead. While they still seemed reluctant to move forward, they gripped Abigail's hand tightly in his right claw, barely realizing that he had phased through it completely.
He looked up at her, smiling just a little. "Thank-you, Abby."
She replied with a hollow tittering that was almost like one of Wendy's rare laughs, and they could swear he saw her smiling back at them. Webber felt a bit of confidence rushing back; the spider, who was piping up in the rear of their mind, was warier about the spooky lantern-light than the darkness it was warding off.
Webber spoke up again. "The big flash… don't you think it just could have just been heat lightening or something like that? Dr. Wickerbottom once told me that it's a thing that happens in late spring and makes the sky flash at night, sometimes."
  "Heat lightning?" Wendy corrected.
  "Yes! That!"
"Not out of the question. But didn't it seem awfully close?"
"We d'know, maybe. It kind of made more of… more of a 'brbrbrbrbr' than a 'KA-BOOM', so it sounded kind of far-off even though it looked close-up. I remember that Grandpa has a tough time hearing really low or really high sounds, so maybe that's why only we heard it. This place is strange."
  "Yes. That it-"
Wendy was cut off by a loud rustling in the thicket ahead of them. She and Webber both flinched, but Wendy moved quickly to protect them. Drawing her spear, she immediately stepped in front of Webber. Abigail edged forward in tandem, on her guard to protect the both of them If need be.
"We can fight, too!" Webber hissed, their claws at the ready. If anything, they should have been in front!
Yet, just as the three were preparing for the worst possible outcome…
Somebody, rather than something, trudged out from the heavy underbrush. Her clothing was still covered in a mix of dirt, dust, and leaf litter. She was gripping a pickaxe firmly in both hands, looking as if she had been just as ready to brawl as the children. Upon seeing each other, they all dropped their weapons.
  "Miss Winona?"
  "Auntie-M-Miss Winona!"
"Kids!" she exclaimed, opening her arms. Both of the children immediately ran to her, all sharing in a hug that lasted for just a moment before Winona spoke again. "What are you three scamps doing here at this hour? Don't tell me that you're striking it out all by your lonesome..."
"Don't worry! All we did was sneak out after dark to see what that flash of light was!"
"Webber, I thought you were still afraid of getting into trouble."
"Yep, I was," Webber said, followed by a laugh. "But seeing Miss Winona out here makes me feel one hundred times better! I bet that Abby's glad, too!"
The children found themselves in another death-grip of a hug. "Don't you two ever go running off like that again. You're going to give me gray hair before we get off this island, I swear it," she began, but paused. "What was all that about a flash, now?"
"There was a light in the sky and what sounded like rolling thunder some distance from camp," said Wendy. "We took our little journey and found you. Honestly, I was expecting some terrible lightning beast…"
"But all we found was you!" added Webber.
"A light in the sky, eh?" Winona repeated, thinking on it. "Tell me, kiddo, about how long ago was that?"
"Thirty-two minutes… on the nose!" Webber said, before getting a pair of surprised stares from the other two. "We're both really good at keeping time! We didn't have a clock in the living room, and my father made me take these awful hour-long piano lessons, so I learned to count the minutes out! The spider is good at it, too!"
"Alrighty, then!" Winona said. Webber was always full of surprises. They were a good kid. "But that does mean I'm right- about thirty minutes ago is when I came back using that there touch stone!"
"There's a touch stone in the woods?" Webber asked. "Wendy! The grown-ups are going to be so happy! We've got assurance!"
"Insurance," Wendy corrected. "But how did you know this was here? Did you already pass through these woods some time ago?"
"Right," said Winona. "Just a few days ago I was out here chopping firewood! I'm surprised none of you folks heard me. I would have come back here and probably found you lot the old-fashioned way if it hadn't been for those ornery mutts outnumbering me twenty-to-one!"
"Oh, gosh! Auntie Winona, are you okay?"
"Not at the time," Winona said, pulling back her sleeve to reveal a slew of faint bite marks. "I'll spare you the child-unfriendly details, but it's safe to say I woke up here with what was probably a big flash to you kiddos. It's a relief to find you all-my rear end is safer too, with your company. Now, tell me-who all is back at camp?" she asked, before adding: "Let's start walking back, now."
Wendy took the lead, Webber and Winona following close.
"Dr. Wickerbottom," Wendy started to answer, followed by a chuckle from Winona.
"She's still kicking, huh? Glad to hear it!"
  "And Lady Wigfrid!" added Webber.
"Who, now?" asked Winona. "I think I've heard that name tossed around before, but I've never met her."
The children looked at each other for a moment, before looking back to Winona in slight surprise.
"You haven't?" they asked, almost exactly at the same time.
"Sure haven't." Winona said, but she barely finished the word as the kids began singing Wigfrid's praises.
"Oh, golly, she's so incredibly cool! You're both very cool in such different ways!"
"I do think you'd get along rather well. You both place emphasis on physical strength and are both very gifted at snuffing out the lives of other creatures, when necessary."
"Aw, Wendy… I'm, uh, going to choose to take that as a compliment, all right?"
  "It was meant as such…"
"Oh! Good!" Winona said, with a bit of relief. "In that case, I'm going to make sure to introduce myself to this Wigfrid character right away. The world could use more tough gals!"
-
The group returned to camp a bit before sunrise. Wickerbottom, oblivious to the whole ordeal, still appeared to be studying away in her lit tent, from the look of her silhouette. Wigfrid, on the other hand, they assumed was still asleep. Though the children wanted badly to stay awake and catch up with Winona's adventures, but they were refused. Winona walked them back to their tent, even going so far as to tuck them all in with another hug for the four or five more hours of sleep they could hope to accumulate.
Ever the workaholic, she had decided to stay up and survey the camp, serving as night watch in the meantime. After all, if anything else strange were to happen, she certainly did not want the children to be the ones investigating once again. So, she stoked the central bonfire and had herself a walk around the perimeter of camp, inside of the short palisades. The first order of business, as always, would be to check inventory. As she perused the contents of their chests, she was shocked to see how much they had stockpiled. The party had a ready supply of kindling stacked up beside the machines, and the chests themselves were full of various medicinal tinctures, warm clothing, an entire set of back-up tools, and a bunch of standard survival gear. Then, in the last chest, another detail caught her eye. Were those… spears? The five of them certainly looked a bit pointier than the usual flint-shard-on-a-stick fare, but the decals made them look… well, fake, if Winona was being honest with herself. They looked like stage props-convincing stage props, even, but certainly not like anything that one would find in the jury-rigged kits of these survivors. Each of them had little symbols carved into the hilt, but Winona had no idea what any of them meant. One looked like an arrow, another like the letter "Y" but with an extra line through its middle, and another looked like an oddly written lowercase "n". They were all carved with exact, straight strokes that looked just as surreally perfect as the rest of the weapon.
Curious, she lightly poked a spearhead with her index finger, and quickly drew it back. It wasn't just sharp, it could probably go through some sorry beast's chest and come out its back with the right force behind it! If this so-called "Wigfrid" was their maker, Winona reckoned that she would have to pick up a few tips and share them with the others in order to figure out a way to make better spears more quickly. Yet, the odd symbols puzzled her. Why bother incorporating all of this ritzy business into something you were just going to stab things with and probably break a few days later? To Winona, it was pointless-but probably just some artsy signature or good-luck charm. That aside, she decided to take one with her. In case anything decided to try and get the jump on her,
As for the rest of the camp, things appeared to be running smoothly under Wickerbottom's supervision. A variety of machines were quietly whirring away pleasantly, and Winona was always a fan of Wickerbottom's mechanical prowess. She worked slowly, to Winona's chagrin, but she could never disagree that the finished products had a tendency to run like magic-even and especially the ones that actually ran on magic itself. Winona was a bit lost when it came to those, and she tended to hand off anything involving the arcane to someone with a bit more knowledge in that field. Just thinking about spells, staves, gems, and the like made her head spin. The final oddity was the stock of food. It was excellent! A range of quite edible (and some less edible) steaks lined the icebox, and there were even more cuts of meat left to hang on a couple of drying racks beside it. Winona was left wondering where all of the veggies, were-she was hoping the children were getting a balanced diet. Even so, she was happy that this group had apparently had some successful hunts as of late. No one would be going hungry. After her little self-lead tour, she sat back on a pine stump near the tents with a slight but audible crack that was followed by a shock of pain. Had she really been straining herself that much? Not that it mattered, of course; Winona was determined to stay up and wait for dawn. What if some terrible monster snuck in and destroyed the entire camp? What if there was a storm brewing and she'd be the only one to taste it on the air? She'd stand guard, regardless!
She looked instinctively back to the children's tent every few moments, listening for a rustle or looking for a light flickering inside. She hoped that they were catching some z's in the small amount of time they had. She would be vigilant! She would be responsible! She would be there for everybody… or, would have been, had those not have been her final few thoughts before slumping over just a bit and falling fast asleep right on the stump. Considering the fact that she had stayed up for over 36 consecutive hours beforehand, it wouldn't have been surprising to anyone but her.
-
Winona was awoken with a start at the crack of dawn by a distant scream. Opening her eyes, she jolted up from the stump in a mix of heart-racing surprise at having fallen asleep in the first place and terror for the screamer. Sprinting to the front entry of camp in the faint morning light, spear clutched in both hands, she looked around frantically to identify where the scream had come from. It had been somewhere out towards the open meadow.
The scream came once again. On a closer listen, it sounded quite more like some sort of battle cry than a scream of terror. Confused, Winona squinted and stared off into the distance. There, just a speck of a figure in her sight, was a woman with red hair and a helmet. What in the world was she fighting?
From a small grove of trees emerged an enormous, growling wolf, its maw alone almost dwarfing her.
"Well, I'll be damned." Winona muttered under her breath, staring in awe for just a moment before running towards the woman. This tiny lady was going toe-to-toe with a Varg, and as Winona closed in, she could make out that she barely had a mark on her.
"Be still, föul spawn öf Fenrir!" cried the woman, brandishing her spear. "Shall yöu fashiön yöur demise swift, ör wröught with the möst baleful of agönies?"
The enormous creature snapped its slavering jaws, keeping its distance, and Winona was left in stunned silence at the outlandish newcomer. She was wearing what could only be described as a slightly blood-spattered costume of golden scale and a leather chest-piece, and her braided hair fell past her shoulders and blew in the morning wind. She was fierce. She was peculiar. What in blazes was that accent? Never mind that, she was maybe five-foot-short and exuded a presence worthy of a seven-foot giantess. She was gorgeous.
Wigfrid had apparently noticed Winona some time ago.
"Fellöw shield-maiden, I see yöu wield a weapön! Jöin me! The beast's strength has been whittled döwn, with but a sliver remaining!"
"S-sure thing." Winona answered, her face barely above a whisper as she took her spear and looked the gigantic Varg directly in its ugly eyes.
"I see yöur face glöws red with hatred för the Wölf! We will make gööd partners!"
  "… Yep. Sure does."
"Ön my cöunt, we attack!" Wigfrid said, stepping to the left. "Öne…"
Winona instinctively stepped to the right, matching up. They would attack from both sides, pinning the Varg and making for its quick undoing.
  "Twö…"
Winona was star-struck. How was this woman a real person? Why was she acting like a viking? How was she so fearless? How is she being so absolutely bizarre about this whole endeavor and coming out on top? And, for the love of everything good in the world, why was she making Winona's heart race faster than any monster ever could?
  "Three!"
Wigfrid zigged and Winona zagged, and while the Varg attempted to move out of the way and come for Winona with a terrible bite. Wigfrid jumped up. Twirling and throwing her spear, she managed to stab the beast right in the back of its head as it reared up. Just as soon as it had opened its maw wide, it fell to the ground with a mighty thump, its red tongue lolling out.
"Many thanks, my newly-förged friend!" Wigfrid said, seemingly incapable of a register other than loud and surprisingly melodic. She held out her hand for Winona. "Pardön the mess. I am slightly öff-kilter töday. I was öut all of the eve, tracking a beast tö keep me sustained, and I am left with this creature! I will eat its flesh, as all flesh is the fööd of warriörs, but I am ashamed tö admit that the flesh öf evil settles with me… less amicably."
"I… reckon you're Wigfrid. Is that right?"
"Sö yöu have heard my name and my explöits!"
"… In some ways, yep. My name's Winona. You're awfully, uh, good at fighting," said Winona, finally taking the handshake and firmly returning one that very well may have ripped a weaker person's arm out of its socket. "It's a pleasure to meet another woman with some real physical abilities around these parts. Shame we met in the middle of battle," she continued, while clearly thinking exactly the opposite of that. "Thanks for killing that thing. If it got to camp, our collective geese would've been cooked."
"The pleasure is all mine!" Wigfrid replied with an almost booming laugh. "You're an ödd öne, my scarved ally. Nöw, shall we skin it and return tö camp?"
"That's the plan, I guess." Winona said, while admonishing herself for not speaking with more reverence. This was a lady she was talking to! A lady of war! She was bizarre, warlike, bloodied, and had the strangest air of familiarity about her, but she was strong and beautiful, and Winona wanted nothing more than to talk to her for the next forever-and-a-half. For the first time in decades, Winona was love-struck. It wasn't an attitude becoming of her career-based mindset.
As they walked back to camp, Wigfrid began telling stories in that thick Scandinavian accent of hers. Winona, enamored, listened closely to every word while having the most neutral expression plastered on her face. Half of her brain was excited by the idea of having someone to fawn over after so many years, but on the other side, a thousand kinds of red flag were being raised. One thought overpowered them all, on both ends:
  Winona knew her from somewhere.
