Corundum - Mineral of natural alumina (al2o3) composition
Corundum is a kind of mineral composed of natural alumina (Al2O3). Its hardness is remarkable, and valuable gem is formed in its more refined varieties. The specimen was sent from India to England in the 18th century and described by Mr. Hon in 1798. C. C. Greville was named after corundum - which he thought was the local name of the stone (Hindi, kurund; Tamil, kulundan; Sanskrit, kuruvinda, "Ruby").anionic polyacrylamide
Beautiful and transparent varieties include Ruby and sapphire, while impure grains and lumps are called emery. The term corundum is usually limited to the rest of the species, namely crystalline and crystalline varieties, which are not transparent and bright enough for ornamental purposes and are called "imperfect corundum" by older mineralogists. This variety is named by J. black and is named adamantine in order of hardness, but now the name is usually limited to brown corundum, especially for pearly luster on the base surface.
After diamond, corundum is the most difficult mineral known. Its hardness is usually 9, but there are subtle differences between different gems. Sapphire is harder than ruby, ruby is harder than ordinary corundum. Colors vary widely, and although chromium is a possible reagent in some cases, iron may be the cause of many hues. Transparent varieties are often referred to as "Oriental" stones. Corundum is mainly used in watches and bearings in electrical equipment.
Colored corundum for gemstones is mainly from Ceylon, Myanmar, Siam and Montana. Rough corundum can be found in many places and is usually of higher commercial value as an abrasive compared with the less pure emery. However, coarse corundum is usually partially hydrated or otherwise altered, resulting in a decrease in hardness.
In India, local singles use corundum sticks and rubber powder, which are made of powdered minerals bonded with shellac, in the Salem region of Madras, Mysore and Rava. In the United States, especially in North Carolina and Georgia, there are abundant corundum deposits, which are associated with peridotites and often in contact with gneisses. The mineral is widely processed, such as Mount gonyu in Macon County, North Carolina. In 1871, many ruby, sapphire and corundum pebbles were found nearby.
Corundum also occurs in many parts of Montana, where crystals are usually of gem quality. They are mainly found in the form of loose crystals in gravels, but also in natural rocks such as andesite and lamprophyre. In Canada, corundum also occurs in igneous rocks related to Laurentian gneiss, nepheline syenite. In 1896, the geological survey discovered important deposits in Hastings County, Ontario. Now corundum works in and around Renfro county. New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria are other sources of corundum. It is also found in the ural and irman mountains, in the Alps (in dolomites), in basalts of the Rhine River. In fact, corundum from subordinate rocks seems to be widely distributed, even in the United Kingdom. isle.polyacrylamide powder for sale
