Based off this prompt by @MiaBrown:
"Chloé wakes up one morning and realizes she immediately needs to talk to the heroes of Paris. at least, that would be the decent thing to do, given there must be an akuma on the loose they are unaware of. she could even help them out with its powers, if she felt so inclined, as they obviously have something to do with brain-washing or psychological manipulation. after all, what other explanation could there be for the absurdly sudden and even more ridiculous feeling that she's in love with Luka Couffaine?"

Caline's Akuma Class
Chloé remembered everyone’s birthdays. Well, Chloé remembered everything about everyone.
She remembered what Rose wasn’t allowed to eat despite it only coming up once. She remembered all of Kim and Alix competitions. She remembered Sabrina’s mom’s death anniversary.
Chloé always remembered. And after a year she started to use that knowledge.
She would drag the whole class to Alix’s and Kim’s competitions. She would take it upon herself to find out what Rose could eat at different events. She would ensure there was somewhere that Juleka could go when she got overstimulated. She took on Sabrina’s responsibilities when it was her mom’s death anniversary so that Sabrina didn’t have to worry about school. She told off the press and Adrien’s fangirls when they tried to show Marinette or Nino’s face or made Adrien unccacomfortable with the comments on his body.
Chloé always knew what to do because she was always watching and listening.
“Mme. Bustier?” Chloé called from behind the closed classroom door as she knocked. Caline glanced at the clock. 6:30 am. Classes didn’t start for another hour and a half, classrooms wouldn’t open for another half an hour. Why is she here?
Caline got up and opened the door for Chloé. “Good morning Chloé. Is there something you need to talk to me about?”
“Yes.” She played with the ends of her hair. “No one is sleeping properly.”
Caline rose and eyebrow as she sat back down at her desk. “We have had a lot of night akumas recently.”
“They haven’t been sleeping before that. Juleka and Rose can’t sleep without eachother and even then they get up every hour checking on the other. Marinette has been calling us first thing in the morning for the past month and when she does it sounds like she’s been panicking for the whole night but was scared to wake us up. Kim, Nino and Adrien startle out of their sleep from nightmares. Alya is constantly checking the Ladyblog, worried that she didn’t put enough safety precautions on it. Sabrina doesn’t even try to sleep because of the nightmares and in turn Max stays up to ensure that she’s fine. Mylene and Ivan are always up to make tea and sing for anyone who needs it.”
Caline narrows her eyes on Chloé’s face. She looked normal when Caline wasn’t paying attention but Chloé’s eyes drooped as if she could fall asleep at any second. “Are the sleepovers more frequent now?” Chloé nodded slowly. “What do you want to do about the sleeping problem?”
“I don’t know. That’s why I came to you. I was hoping that you knew what to do.”
Caline frowned slightly. “I’ll think about it, okay?” Chloé nodded with a small smile. Something was still bothering her. “Have you been sleeping Chloé?”
Chloé’s eyes widened slightly, not noticeable but still there. “That doesn’t matter Mme. Bustier! I’m fine!”
She put down her pen and closed her eyes before opening them slowly. “Chloé.” Chloé stopped at her teacher’s tone. “Are you sleeping?”
Chloé hung her head. “No, Mme. Bustier.”
“Why?”
“Nightmares.” Caline tilted her head slightly in question. “Well, I haven’t had a nightmare yet. I have flashes of akuma attacks when I’m awake and I’ve been too scared to find out what I might see when I do fall asleep.”
Chloé remembered everything. Now Caline knows that it applies to akuma attacks too.
Caline smiled as she opened the door for Chloe and Alix. “You finally got her to come,” she said to Alix proudly. It had been two weeks since the nap room had opened. It was an unused room that Caline had asked be turned into a room with couches and rugs and mats and blankets and pillows for students who can’t sleep at home would be able to sleep. They also had hired people to help with the maintenance of the room and to be there to make things like tea so students wouldn’t have to worry about that. When the school asked for donations Chloé had gotten most of Paris’ upper class to donate.
But Chloé had never been in the room.
Alix grinned as she pulled her girlfriend along. “Yup!” Alix set on one of the couches before going for 2 cups of chamomile tea for both of them and settling on her girlfriend’s lap.
Chloé took one of the cups from her and pulled one of the blankets over them, getting comfortable. It didn’t take long for Alix to fall asleep, more than content under the fluff blanket, hugging her girlfriend. Chloé couldn’t fall asleep, her body tense and scared. Alix woke up and smiled sadly at her and buried her face in the crook of Chloé’s neck, whispering something to Chloé. A few minutes later, Chloé fell asleep to Alix’s mumbling. It wasn’t a deep sleep but it was progress.

Honestly, the fact that people to get so offended over the idea of Chloe and Lila being worse than Gabriel. Kind of makes me roll my eyes ar people screeching about the misogny of two teenage girls being called evil.
Both Chloe and Lila have both have been shown to knowingly willingly try to take advantage of the fact that Gabriel is an abuser to use for their benefits…
The reason I honestly agree with the assessment that they are both worse than Gabriel comes down to one simple thing. If you took away the miraculous from Gabriel, he probably wouldn’t have the guts to do literally any of the stuff that he does. All his confidence and all his power to do what he does come from the fact that he has that magical brooch.
Chloe and Lila have both been shown to not need a miraculous to want to do evil things to people. It is it so shocking to people the idea that teenage girls can be pretty awful coming from a girl who was frequently bullied by other teenage girls yeah teens can be awful to each other.
Portraying something in fiction doesn’t equate to condoning/normalizing behavior.
I adore this analysis of yours ^^ ! Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts :) Even if I'm a girl myself I was a little bothered that fans felt so ofended over the idea that Lila and Chloé could be worse than Gabriel. But for me it was kinda logic that they would be worse than him, because they are supposed to be the next Big baddies once Monarch is out of the picture. And Ladybug and Chat Noir became strong enough that the ml writters will have to put them against crazier villains in order to rise up the stakes
I had never thought of the kind of person Gabriel would be without the butterfly miraculous, but I think we had a glimpse of it in the episode Queen Wasp where he was ready to stop everything for Adrien's sake (and he even complimented Marinette, while in this season 5 she seems to be the second person he despises the most after Ladybug T_T). It is also the period when Gabriel had not yet developed the habit of controlling Adrien with his amok. Gabriel had not been totally corrupted by power yet in this episode, while for season 5 there is no doubt that he has descended into madness and took a liking to evil, but it was a slow descent into hell, he got worse every season, and his abusive, toxic and obsessive behavior also escalated.
Chloé and Lila on the other hand ... They're different. Of course there was a period when Chloé softened between season 2 and season 3, but the Derision episode will show us how bad she really was, and unfortunatelly became once again. This episode will also reveal how much Chloé has a very twisted and wicked view of how the world works.
And Lila is no better, if not worse. I still get goosebumps thinking back to this scene when she's cutting Marinette's face from a bunch of photos she took from a distance either by herself or by paying somoene to do it, declaring loud and clear "soon you'll have no one and nothing left Marinette". My only though after this scene was : PSYCHOPATH !
And I don't know if you've read the bible, but (SPOILER WARNING FOR THIS PARAGRAPH !) the fact that Lila can go as far as managing 3 false identities at the same time just to get attention and popularity is kinda messed up. Also her intelligence level must be as good as Felix's if she can pull something like that so easilly (also it probably helps her that most ml character are guillible dummies ^^')
And let's not forget that Chloé and Lila willingly got themselves akumatized at one point just because they were offended. They are willing to wreck havoc for the most pettiest reasons of all.
And also, while during season 5 Gabriel is mostly motivated by his madness and hunger for power and control, his original purpose was still intriguing and understandable, to bring a loved one back to life.
Lila and Chloé on the other hands, what do they want, what are their motivations ? Simple : destroying the life of another teenager girl who barely did anything to them. They are only motivated by petty jealousy and the desire to hurt.
Because yeah Chloé always enjoyed hurting Marinette more than anyone else even before she became jealous of her, and Lila seems to have developped an hate-obsession toward Marinette even more intense than the hate she feels for Ladybug, and for what ? Just because Marinette called Lila out for her lies twice or thrice and is currently Adrien's girlfriend ? The boy both Lila and Chloé covet llike he's a thing to possess ?
When there is no rationality behind someone's motives, only madness remains. And crazy antagonists who take pleasure in making others miserable can sometimes be even more terrifying than rich powerfull business man obsessed with power.
There's no denying anymore that both Lila and Chloé are not only bad persons, but also a little deranged in their head. So what happens when you give wicked teenagers more power than they already have ? They become worse, because if they can get away with hurting even more people because that's something they enjoy, what's really stopping them ?
What the fans seem to ignore is that even at 14 years old, people can be pretty messed up in real life. It's much rarer than adults doing evil around them that's for sure, but it happens. I even remember a real case where two young girls below 12 years old murdered a 2 years old kid and an old lady just "for fun". And there's many others example with boys, some can even start committing rape when they're just 14. So why is it that hard to beleive that 14 years old girls have the potential to be more evil than an adult man when they grow up ?
Also can we really talk about misoginy when the main hero character who must face those two crazy girls is also a girl herself ? And when said girl is the protagnoist while her boy partner is the deuteragonist ?
Miraculous Ladybug seems to focus much more on the performances of its female characters like Kagami, Alya, Alix and Zoé for example. And then the star characters of the New York and Shanghai specials were also female. The series has probably chosen two female characters as the future antagonists who will be "worse" than the previous one, because they are characters that we have known since season 1 as rivals of the heroine, and who also evolved alongside the season, but towards the path of evil. After all, when the good becomes better, the bad must become worse.
But I think the detail that might show that fans are wrong to howl mysoginia is that somehow, Gabriel is the one who gave Chloe and Lila opportunities to become even worse. His akumatizations and plans involving Chloe and Lila can be seen as a way of corrupting the two young girls, their viciousness is something Gabriel has always indirectly encouraged for his plans. So is it so surprising then that the student would manage to surpass the master ?
For those who have read the bible, I seem to remember that the synopsis of an episode mentioned Chloe and Lila as "the best minions and allies of Monarch" So if Chloé and Lila became worse than Gabriel, it's because Gabriel himself influenced them.

My ideas for if I were to rewrite Miraculous Ladybug
Chloé Bourgeois would get a proper redemption. -She would give up on trying to please her mother after Ladybug offers words of encouragement after Queen Wasp -She develops a positive relationship with her half-sister when Zoé moves to Paris.  Also, the characters actually react to the revelation that Audrey had an extramarital affair that produced a child close to Chloé in age.
Gabriel Agreste is more consistent with his standards and qualms.  While he is willing to take advantage of an emotionally-vulnerable Marinette to Akumatize her (as in Zombizou, Chameleon, and Ladybug), he would not go out of his way to ensure that she is broken in such a way, and he would use his powers to discretely protect her from Cash by Akumatizing him and leading him away from her.  Also, he would never, under any circumstances, Akumatize Adrien.
-Adrigaminette is endgame. There are plenty of shipping moments between the three of them. -Ladybug and Chat Noir reveal their identities to each other at the end of Season 3, and then they start dating, and they also both start dating Kagami as well. -For a bit into Season 4, Kagami is still out of the loop, which causes some tension. -The main plot of Glaciator 2 is moved up to Season 3, because that's one of my favorite episodes. There's also the bonus of including the scene of Hawk Moth aborting the release of his Akuma when he refuses to corrupt Adrien, so you know Chat Blanc and Ephemeral are never going to happen.
Since the incidents that incite the premise are off the table, Chat Blanc does not happen. It is referenced, however, as Adrien has a nightmare that is pretty close to what happened in the episode, minus the time travel rectification.
Season 3 would have a Sandboy redux episode/chapter, which shows new nightmares: Chat Noir's nightmare would manifest Chat Blanc (and at one point, Ladybug would have to fight him solo); Chloé's nightmare is her relapsing back into her old ways and becoming as bad as her mother, which would manifest in the form of Queen Wasp; Marinette's new nightmare would be Lila turning her friends against her (I guess it would be like a Salt fic).
Chloé does not become Miracle Queen. Hawk Moth tries to turn her to his side, but she pretends to accept his deal long enough to get the Bee Miraculous and then uses the trompo to fly off and flee so she can warn Ladybug (Hawk Moth is surprised and he's also holding the Miracle Box, so he can't simply stop her before she jumps off the roof). He switches to Plan B, which is Lila. -The episode largely plays out the same way, although Lila takes the Fox Miraculous as she becomes Miracle Queen. Her mind control drones still resemble bees, mostly, as Hawk Moth does not feel like changing the power set too much. Queen Bee joins the Battle of the Miraculous. The conflict basically ends the same way, but afterward Ladybug and Chat Noir discuss the new status quo and decide they need to trust each other more than ever, and they reveal their identities to one another.

@jauneilles: ❛ it’s nothing, i’m just tired. ❜ / for nathalie!
Tumblr media
Doubt briefly flickers across the otherwise stoic expression, but lasts only a moment. It wasn't her place to pry into the well fair of children outside of her charge, certainly not the Bourgeois child. And even more unusual, that she should even notice such a thing, the tiniest of changes in Chloe's otherwise steadfast outward appearance. Since when had she ever paid attention to such minor details?
"Of course," comes automatically, dismissing the notion that anything beyond that could possibly be effecting the young woman. "My apologies. Adrien should be ready for you up in his room. Just call if you two need anything."
That should have been the last of it, but Nathalie couldn't quite help but keep her eyes trained on Chloe on her way up the stairs. Had she finally been pushed to a breaking point?

“The Tuileries’ Garden, Wednesday at 3:00 pm” that was the place and the time, Adrien told you you were going to spend the afternoon at. All his classmates will be there, so it would be a good opportunity to meet everyone. You were told to bring something to eat or drink as you were all going to have a little snack there ( I don’t even know if we’re allowed to settle there to eat lmao ). You took a bag of marshmallows and another one of chips so that - she hoped - everyone could find something they would like.
Sitting in his car you were anxiously waiting to place a face on the names of the people he so often told you about. In the secrecy of the closed doors, his hand held yours, soothingly rubbing circles on the back of your hand. Meeting new people wasn't always easy but damn that was a whole class of 13 people.
“I’m sure they are all going to like you” he tried to reassure you.
“They are going to be quite a lot Adrien” you whispered back, holding his hand tighter.
“Just tell yourself it's back-to-school time” he joked, his humor shining through as he spoke to you, fully comfortable in your presence.
“I hate back-to-school” you whined.
“I know” he chuckled “But I also know you’ll do fine. Come on we’re almost there” he said his excitement breaking through.
You quickly smoothed your hair one last time and took a deep breath as you felt the car coming to a halt. Adrien let go of your hand to grab your shoulder and bring you closer to him, he placed a sweet kiss on your lips. He wanted to savor and bring a bit of your taste with him, knowing that once out the car you’d have to play it cool.
As you finally stepped out of the car, you decided to walk to the place you knew his friends were waiting for you both, keeping a friendly distance between you as you wandered through the gardens. You exchanged a few glances and it was clear in both your eyes that you wanted to hold hands and walk hip to hip, but you had to refrain. He whispered something to you and when you looked in the distance you saw a small gathering of people.
Some were already waving at you and another one, seemingly on rollerblades ( according to the pictures there is gravel on the ground so I don’t even think that she can do that but oh well ) who was zooming in your direction “Hey what’s up newbie ? Doin’ great ? I’m Alix by the way, nice to meet you” she said, extending her hand for you to shake.
As you did you gave her a smile and replying to her “Nice to meet you too, I’m Y/n” you were a lot less tense now, and you hoped everyone would be as nice as Alix seemed to be.
A short while later, you finally managed to reach the small table they had set for everyone to put their snacks on. You set your bags of marshmallow and chips and not even 10 seconds later the 10 people had gathered around you, eager to meet and talk to you. I mean, you were a potential new friend. Well there still were 2 people that seemed to care about something else, well rather someone else. One, you recognized easily to be Chloé Bourgeois, the mayor’s daughter and there other… erm- no she didn’t ring any bell.
From the corner of your eyes you could see Adrien who was smiling fondly at you, he was very happy and proud that you mingled that easily with his friends. You took a lollipop from a bowl which was set on the table and put it into your mouth, humming approvingly at the sugary taste of the fruity candy.
Adrien’s eyes were locked on your every move. Did you know that you were teasing him at this very moment ? That you were torturing him as you savored the candy ? He subconsciously made his way towards you - keeping his distance - making the blond girl from earlier whine and scream at the lack of attention she was left with, meanwhile the other one followed him closely. You looked at her for a brief moment trying to analyze her behavior. It wasn’t even easy to concentrate as she almost knocked herself on the table full of snacks. “Were those even made of leg material ?” you wondered, as you saw her stumbling and this time almost falling on your- erm on Adrien.
But then you saw it, that look in her eyes as she looked his way, the way they were seeming to beg him to look at her. You quickly looked her up and down just to make sure, then around, smirking to yourself when you noticed that Adrien was still deeply focused on you and your lollipop.
Suddenly another girl, you now knew was called Alya, came to rescue her friend from embarrassing herself further “Hey Marinette” ooh so that was her name “Did you have the time to introduce yourself to our new friend here” you smiled at her, Alya seemed so nice and normal compared to what her friend was displaying ( I’m not shaming any type behavior or personality there. I can be very weird myself lmao but gosh you can’t tell me Marinette is just plain weird most of the time when she is in civilian )
“Ah sorry ! I’m Marinette” she said seemingly genuine, her eyes betrayed her lack of interest in you though, as they flickered to the blond that had walked closer at your side.
“Hello” you answered politely not really knowing where to stand, this time you didn’t even bother to give your name. She tried to speak to you about various subjects, but the conversation remained awkward. It was evident that she wanted to ask something “Aaand since when do you know A-Adrien ?”
“Bingo” you thought, you saw it coming from miles away.
“I-I mean how are you related ? Like cousins ?” she asked “Well you don’t really look alike” she rambled more to herself “Maybe you are in the same fencing club ?” she tried again.
But you only shook your head “Fincing is his thing” you said “And thank gosh not a relative” you thought - either you wouldn’t be able to do all this with him - “I’m just a friend” you stated, trying to seem convincing as you did you best to prevent a smirk from displaying onto your lips.
Chloé who was never far away chipped in “And how come I never heard of you before. Adrichou is my best friend I would have known it if you were this important” she said as she flipped her hair back ( And yes in French she calls him so I don’t know how she does in English )
Before you could even answer something Adrien spoke up “You would have known about her if you were such a good friend Chloé” his tone wasn’t mean or anything but it was enough to send Chloé grumbling somewhere else. It was a very strange scene to attend for anyone who had known Adrien before, because he never seemed to do this for anyone before. He would always let her talk. Maybe he didn’t see nor hear anything when she did, but this time it was different. It was about you. And when it’s about you he always does.
The blue ? black ? haired girl squinted her eyes at you as if trying to read through you, fortunately her friend pulled her back “I think I’m getting a little hungry there hehe. We’re just going to see what is on the table and we’ll be back soon” she smiled nervously as she dragged her friend away.
And that’s how you partially found yourself alone with him again, staring into each other’s eyes “Just friends ?” he murmured, questioningly. As his words hit your eardrums you couldn't help but be thrown back in time, not even a week ago but this very morning.
His voice accompanied your thoughts as he added “I don’t think your friends know the way you taste” bringing a rush of heat to your face. Gosh how much teasing he could be when he wanted to push your buttons.
“Do they not ?” you teased back, knowing exactly what you were doing. As your mind quickly fills with moments, pictures, sounds of him. You two had quite the steamy “friendship” you thought as you recalled how this very morning he had taken you from behind under his shower, your chest pressed against the tiled walls, the warm water raining on you as he railed you cunt. His teeth sinking in the flesh of your shoulder as he held you close. A good thing that the shower was in his room because everyone could have heard the slapping noises if it wasn’t.
While you were lost in your day dreaming he extended his hand and gently took your lollipop from your mouth, before swiftly showing it in his. You knew he knew what you were thinking about, his green pupils were blown as he stared at you like some wild animal. You knew how he could get when he really needed it. Perfection didn’t exist even for him, doing it in a bed ? hell no ! I’d say at least 45 % of the time you jump his bones you’re not in a bed. And that’s the beauty of it because without this, never you would have got fucked on his piano like this, nor against the windows in his room - of course there is not overlooked around - just the contrast of his body heat and the coldness of the glass was enough to get you dripping wet.
After taking a good taste of it he pushed the candy back in your mouth “No they don’t. I’m the only lucky one who gets to have you Purrincess” he smiled mischievously at you.
“You’re the one who is going to purr tonight” you smirked.
“You’re coming back with me ?” he asked excitedly, as he initially thought you were going back to your place after the little outing.
“Mmhh” you nodded at him as you savored his taste on the almost finished lollipop “I’m going to get more candies” you said taking a step aside, you knew that getting away from him during this moment was like torture for him “You finished my lollipop”
“Don’t worry you’ll get plenty to suck on later” he couldn't help himself from saying, hopefully no one heard, even the two girls from earlier.
“Looking forward to it” you smirked “Don’t get too hard thinking about it though” you said as you eyes traveled to his slightly stirring length. He blushed furiously as he turned around taking a few deep breaths “This isn’t funny” he squeaked “You know I can’t control how it reacts”
“Yeah they all say that” you laughed.
“I’m going to get back so hard at you” he breathed out, still trying to calm down.
You wanted to tease him a bit more but you heard someone call your name “Y/n do you wanna try to play some guitar with us ?”
During the whole end of the afternoon Adrien’s hungry eyes ( one look at you and I can’t disguise - I love you Seb ) were solely locked on you, to the great displeasure of Chloé and Marinette. You knew that tonight neither of you was going to get some sleep, but what you didn’t know is that he just had a very good idea popping into his mind. He was going to finger you until you’re quivering on the backseat of the car on the way back. Then he is going to use your mouth the way it should be instead of teasing him all afternoon, you’re going to keep him wet and warm as he plays piano or watches the tv. You should have known better than to play cat and mouse.

"Oh no Chloé doesn't consider Sabrina her best friend anymore" did she ever? I feel bad for people who think that THIS is what friendship looks like, Sabrina was always bellow her, her servant, they were never equals in the first place. That's abuse not friendship.

Presenting Miraculous Ladybug: Fontaine Edition
ft. Lyney x reader
— A collaboration between @1eaf-me-alone (writing the reader’s POV) and @perpetualcynicism (writing Lyney’s POV). —
Tumblr media
Starring: The Heroes
Lyney as Adrien Agreste/ Chat Noir
A student at the Fontaine Academy of Arts studying magic tricks. He is charming, clever, and perhaps a touch too manipulative for his own good.
When the Court of Fontaine is in danger, however, he dons a mask and goes by the name of ‘Chat Noir’, working alongside his partner Ladybug to protect the city.
Reader as Marinette Du-Pain Cheng/ Ladybug
A student at the Fontaine Academy of Arts studying prop design. They take their studies seriously, have little energy for distractions, and crack smiles rarely.
When the Court of Fontaine is in danger, they don their own mask and become the hero known as ‘Ladybug’, working alongside their partner Chat Noir to protect the city.
Charlotte as Alya Césaire
A student at the Fontaine Academy of Arts studying photography, as well as an aspiring reporter for the Steambird Newspaper. A close friend of the Reader, her disposition is outgoing, kind, and energetic.
She writes articles to kick off on an early start to her career; the most famous of which, called ‘Chats on the Steambug’, records the deeds of the two heroes Ladybug and Chat Noir and speculates as to their identities.
Lynette as Nino Lahiffe (of sorts)
A student at the Fontaine Academy of Arts studying magic tricks alongside her twin brother, Lyney. She is both her brother’s best friend and closest confidant. She speaks rarely and keeps to herself, preferring to assist from the shadows rather than take the spotlight.
Furina as Chloé Bourgeois
A student at the Fontaine Academy of Arts studying drama. Her love for gossip and tendency to hold herself above others puts her at odds with the Reader, whose dislike for gossip and frivolity is taken by Furina as a personal offence.
Neuvillette as Master Fu
A judge at the Court of Fontaine hiding a secret in his own right. Serious and impartial, he has connections all over the city, and is the mind behind the heroes. When a dangerous atmosphere begins to spread over Fontaine, he is the first to act and rally help from those he deems worthy of holding a miraculous to keep the city safe.
Tumblr media
Starring: The Villains
Arlecchino as Gabriel Agreste/ Hawkmoth
Lyney and Lynette’s adoptive mother, and a successful theatre director. She runs a large orphanage—the House of the Hearth—though her relationship with her foster children is strained at best.
By night she is the villain Crimson Moth, whose goal is to resurrect her close friend, Signora, through capturing the Ladybug and Cat Noir miraculouses.
La Signora as Emily Agreste
The deceased close friend of Arlecchino who aided her in looking after the House of the Hearth. Following her passing, Arlecchino has begun trying to bring her back to life.

No Miraculous, no classmates AU where Adrien in his 20s has been dating Chloé for 3 years. He's got no support network, no real friends, and he has nothing, really, to look forward to. Just another 60 years of Chloé and living a life that someone else chose for him. He can see himself turning into André Bourgeois and doesn't see any way out of it.
Then he starts speaking to one of the newer designers who's kind of cute and she honestly makes him almost feel good about himself to the point where she's the only thing that actually makes him want to get out of bed, but he can't go there because he and Chloé are engaged until Marinette finally asks him why, exactly, he chose to marry her, why is he living a life for someone else, and suddenly he finds he's quit his job, publicly dumped his fiancée, and started spending all his time at Marinette's parents' bakery
And he's finally something he never thought he would get to be--happy.

There was no Chloé Bourgeois  Redemption Arc
It’s time to for me to write about the so-called “Redemption Arc“ for Chloé Bourgeois, of Miraculous Ladybug infamy. Many people claim that such a thing existed. These people are wrong. While Miraculous Ladybug may provide the illusion of such an arc, that’s all it is - an illusion. And like all illusions, it falls apart once you touch it.
There’s also some questionable takes in regards to exactly how responsible Marinette is meant to be for Chloé’s “redemption”, which need to be tackled since they help feed into the illusion. And also because I find them deeply offensive. To me, personally.
A neccesary preface here is that I’m not saying Chloé is incapable of redemption. What I am saying, however, is that during seasons two and three of Miraculous Ladybug, the redemption arc people claim existed clearly did not.
Redemption 101
In the most basic sense, a redemption arc is a type of character arc where a bad character decides to stop being bad and start being good. Along the way, it’s generally accepted that they need to atone for their bad actions, and perhaps do something to reverse the damage such actions have caused. A critical component required for this to work is that the character both understands that their actions are harmful, and so decides to act in a better way.
Probably the most famous redemption arc in western animation is Zuko’s, from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Zuko begins the show as an antagonist, directly attempting to capture Aang, the Avatar and Last Airbender. Doing so will allow the Fire Nation to win the war, and also complete their genocide of the Air Nomad people. However, Zuko realises that supporting the Fire Nation’s bid for world domination is harmful to others, and himself. By the end of the series, he has rejected the worldview of his father, grandfather and great grandfather, and indeed helps Aang defeat the Firelord. Along the way, Zuko find a way to help not just Aang, but also Katara and Sokka, who are also victims of Fire Nation Imperialism. Zuko earns redemption not through the decision to be good, but by performing good, and in many cases, reparative actions.
Honestly, from this basic definition, I think it’s pretty obvious that Chloé hadn’t even started the first step of a redemption arc by the time she betrays Ladybug in Miracle Queen. She never accepts her actions are wrong, makes no attempt to change them without an ulterior motive, and generally continues to do bad things for bad reasons. But in spite of this, the claims of this mythical redemption arc don’t just exist, they are considered generally accepted. Why? It’s complicated, yet simple.
Chloé Who?
On a basic level, Chloé Bourgeois is fairly generic character - the “mean girl“ school bully, who torments the protagonist, Marinette Dupain-Cheng. In keeping with Miraculous’ superhero genre, Chloé admires Ladybug, Marinette’s superhero alter-ego. How ironic! Generally, Chloé acts as a minor, civilian-level antagonist to Marinette, who gets in the way, while being clearly much less of a deal than Hawk Moth. However, due to the mechanics of akumatization, Chloé’s actions often spiral into larger, supervillain-shaped consequences. Because while she may fit into the bully archetype, there is one thing that makes her somewhat atypical: a reach that extends far beyond the school setting.
André Bourgeois is his daughter’s primary enabler. As a rich person and Mayor of Paris, he has a significant amount of influence. Influence he makes freely available to Chloé for basically any purpose. No grudge is too petty, no problem too small when it comes to indulging her whims, and no bridge is too big burn. Nobody who theoretically has the authority to say no to Chloé actually can, because her father is implicitly approving her every action. It’s hardly a shock that Chloé is consistently terrible when she faces no consequences for her actions.
But there’s one last piece in the Chloé puzzle - Audrey Bourgeois. Chloé really wants her mother’s approval, but her mother lives in another country. Audrey is also a terrible person, a character who is literally defined by her vileness. She has Chloé’s attitude, and André’s level of influence, and like her daughter, immediately throws a tantrum when she can’t get her way. The attention Audrey gives towards her daughters is primarily negative, and that’s when she actually pays attention to them. Thus, Audrey provides Chloé with a Tragic Backstory, and some much needed Sympathy Points. This, of course, forms the foundation of the Redemption Illusion.
The thing about Chloé’s relationship (or lack thereof) with her mother is while it explains her behavior, it doesn’t excuse it. The harm she inflicts is no less because of it, and many of her actions cannot be ignored due to it. I think there’s a pretty obviously piece of bad logic here. Many characters who undergo redemption arcs are often sympathetic villains. Chloé is a sympathetic villain. But that doesn’t mean that Despair Bear, the episode that introduces this sympathetic side is the start of, nor the foundation of a redemption arc. If anything, Despair Bear shows the primary reason why Chloé isn’t on the path to redemption - her attempts to be “nice“ are motivated entirely to maintain her friendship with Adrien, and once she has what she wants, she immediately reverts to her normal behaviour. This theme of apparently good acts being done for selfish reasons will be repeated later.
Marinette: Victim, Not Victimizer
An important part of the Redemption Illusion is how it ultimately revolves around not just Chloé, but Marinette. Chloé is nothing but negative towards Marinette, but at the same time admires Ladybug... who is Marinette. This isn’t Alya style “wow look how cool and heroic she is“ style admiration, however. No, Chloé, in a sense, wants to be Ladybug. First by pretending to be her, and later via the Bee Miraculous, which would seem to put her on the same level as Ladybug. But since Ladybug is Marinette, this can only lead to conflict.
While Chloé has perpetrated many on-screen acts that are selfish, obnoxious and downright cruel, something that manages to slip under the radar is her pre-Origins treatment of Marinette. Sabine’s comment about how long Marinette and Chloé have been in the same class indicates that the latter has been bullying the former for at least three years. This has evidently damaged Marinette’s self-confidence, since even after being Ladybug in part one of Origins, she still thinks she can’t do it, and tries to give it up. She also doesn’t dispute Alya’s rather hasty assessment of Chloé as evil, and immediately assumes that Adrian is a bad person because he’s friends with Chloé.
Marinette’s relationship with Chloé is already poisoned at the start of the show. And it’s entirely Chloé’s fault. She didn’t have to bully Marinette. Being cruel to Marinette wouldn’t earn Chloé her mother’s approval. All it achieves is making Chloé feel better, by making Marinette suffer. Three years of bullying isn’t something you can ignore. It’s not something Marinette can simply “get over”, even as Ladybug. She probably hates Chloé, and every drop of enmity is earned. But how can I know this all from the limited picture painted by Origins, and the glimpses into Marinette’s pre-Ladybug life? I don’t. This isn’t something I needed to find from the text or subtext of the show. So then, how do I know?
I know because I lived it. When I was Marinette’s age, I was bullied. A lot. It hurt. But what people don’t want to acknowledge is that being a victim of bullying doesn’t just make you sad. It’s deeper than that. It made me angry. At the perpetrators, and the staff who let it happen, no matter how many times it was brought to their attention. It’s took me years to realise just how much it affected me, how my aggressive behaviour in certain online spaces might be connected to it. In Marinette, I see a part of myself. So when I see people claim that Marinette is somehow to blame for Chloé’s actions, that “Marinette should have given Chloé a chance“, it makes me a little angry. If someone told me I should be responsible for making my bullies better people, I’d tell them to fuck off.
Attempting to shift the responsibility for repairing Chloé’s bad behaviour on to Marinette is simply victim blaming with extra steps. Yes, Marinette is Ladybug, hero of Paris. But Marinette is also Marinette, a long-term victim of Chloé, and someone who Chloé continues to try to abuse, even if the efficacy is no longer there. It’s also not really fair to Chloé, either, when you think about it. Marinette is positioned to think the worst of Chloé, meaning she’s likely to see any regression on Chloé’s part as proof that the whole endevour is pointless. For Chloé to escape her toxic behaviour, she needs help from someone she hasn’t caused significant damage to.
And as with the rest of the Redemption Illusion, you have to ignore a lot of the text to make the idea that Marinette is somehow to blame seem reasonable. Marinette shows more compassion to Chloé than Chloé does to anyone in her entirety. It simply doesn’t help, because Chloé doesn’t want Ladybug to be nice to her, she wants Ladybug to accept her as an equal. And when that isn’t given, Chloé isn’t above trying to take it, with disasterous results.
Bad Bee-haviour
A key point in Zuko’s redemption arc is when he joins Team Avatar. This is when he truly abandons the ideals of Fire Nation Imperialism, and chooses to work directly against them. It’s not the end, but a midpoint. And it’s not a reward - it’s a duty, a commitment to help Aang defeat Ozai. I think it’s worth noting that Zuko actually gets weaker due to this, as he can no longer draw on his negative emotions to firebend. Only by helping Aang discover the pre-imperialism version of Firebending does he regain the ability himself. Rejecting the negative brings Zuko so far, but to be complete he must embrace a positive alternative.
Chloé’s transformation into Queen Bee is her anti-Zuko moment. She doesn’t work to attain it - the Bee Miraculous is literally dropped into her path. It gives her power, yes, which she immediately abuses. Queen Bee doesn’t exist to do good, like the other four heroes at the time. No, Queen Bee exists to exalt Chloé. Becoming a hero doesn’t move her to toward redemption. If anything, it moves her away from it.
It all comes back to Chloé’s first act as Queen Bee. In an attempt to prove that she’s “exceptional“, she transforms and tries to find a problem to solve. But when she can’t find one, she chooses to create one. By paralysing a train conductor, which ends up creating a problem she can’t solve. If it weren’t for Ladybug and Chat Noir’s timely intervention, a lot of people would have been injured, or even killed. All because Chloé wanted to seem like a “hero”. It’s an act so callous that it should have marked the end of her career as Queen Bee. It’s instant, irrevocable proof that she can’t be trusted with a Miraculous, because she nearly murdered a bunch of people with it.
But even if you ignore the train incident, being Queen Bee clearly doesn’t make Chloé better. In both Stormy Weather 2 and Miracular, her cruelty is what triggers an akumatization. In Animaestro, she forms a truce with Marinette entirely for the purpose of harassing Kagami. These are not the actions of someone trying to be a better person. Indeed, they look very much like the actions of a person who doesn’t think they need to change, and is thus continuing as usual.
Yet in spite of the lack of actual progress, Queen Bee is perhaps the keystone of the Redemption Illusion. She wants to be a hero. So it is assumed that if she wants to be a hero, she must be good. I suppose this line of argument sounds convincing, if you only consider it on the surface level. The problem is that it falls apart when you actually examine Chloé’s actual behaviour after becoming Queen Bee. Which is mostly the same as her behaviour before, except sometimes she tries leveraging being Queen Bee for status or bullying. This is because her motivation for being a hero isn’t heroic - it’s selfish.
Malicious Queen
Of course, the Redemption Illusion eventually collided with reality in the form of Miracle Queen. When Hawk Moth offers her the Bee Miraculous, Chloé doesn’t hesitate to take it, and is then willingly akumatized. While I do think this could have had a little more setup, it’s an action that’s entirely in-character for Chloé. She’s selfish, she’s cruel, and she’s unwilling to change. But Ladybug couldn’t be bullied or blackmailed via Chloé’s normal methods. So when Hawk Moth offers her a way around Ladybug’s No, of course she takes it. She accepts akumatization because she believes that the best way to prove her superiority to Ladybug is by harming her. The same way she harmed many other characters up to this point. (Including Marinette, who is Ladybug.)
Some people attempt, in the usual poor manner, to deflect Chloé’s responsibility for her actions onto Ladybug. Gotta keep that victim blame train going, I guess. The logic is that because Ladybug chose Kagami to help fight Heart Hunter for selfish reasons, Chloé is magically absolved of her guilt. I can’t disagree that picking Kagami in order to break up her date with Adrien was a bad thing, but in the grand scheme of things, it’s not that bad. The fact of the matter is that Ladybug probably wasn’t going to bring back Queen Bee, no matter the situation. It’s not her job to make Chloé a better person, and it’s not her responsibility to stop Chloé from making bad decisions.
Marinette made a dodgy decision because of a teenage crush and suffered massively disproportionate consequences. Chloé decided to help a terrorist because she felt entitled to the Bee Miraculous, and could still go back to her incredibly privileged life afterwards. It’s Marinette who had to live with the consequences of both their actions, becoming Guardian far earlier than she should have. A consequence that only occured because Chloé decided to help Hawk Moth. Once again, Marinette is not the problem; Chloé is the problem.
Ultimately, Miracle Queen is entirely in-character for Chloé, because Chloé has never been a good person. The Redemption Illusion persists, however, because people seem to have blended her few sympathetic traits with her occational (and temporary) good actions to create a version of Chloé who doesn’t exist within the show. Along with one last act, that really isn’t as heroic as it might seem on the surface.
The One Where She Isn’t Akumatized
In Miracular, Hawk Moth tries to akumatize Chloé and fails. Up to that point, akumatization had been presented as 100% effective, with no attempts to resist being successful. This is occationally used to suggest that Chloé is becoming good, which ignores basically all information the show provides about akumatization.
Throughout Miraculous Ladybug, succumbing to akumatization is never considered to be an immoral act. Indeed, the reasons for akumatization vary, from completely unjustified selfish reasons, to justified selfish reasons and more community-minded reasons. But no matter what a victim’s starting intentions are, Hawk Moth twists them around until he can make them into a supervillain. People are even akumatized over stuff like “kids don’t respect panthers“ and “ice cream was wrong“, which aren’t really things you can appy a moral judgement to.
Since being akumatized is not a moral failure, it follows that resisting is not a moral success. While breaking the akumatization is impressive, with very few people achieving it, that doesn’t mean Chloé gets merit points for it. Indeed, Chloé resists akumatization on the basis that she believes she can still be Queen Bee. She rejects Hawk Moth’s offer not because it’s the right thing to do, but because she thinks she doesn’t need it. Which is why once it becomes clear that Ladybug won’t be giving her the Bee Miraculous, she willing accepts akumatization.
But the real killer problem is that Sabrina is able to be akumatized into Miracular because of Chloé’s actions. When Lila’s fake Ladybug dance fails, Chloé takes it out on Sabrina, in a way that’s just, look, here’s the exact quote:
PLAY? With you!? Who are YOU anyway? You don't have any powers! You're a nobody! I'm a superheroine, okay? I'm Queen Bee! You and I have NOTHING in common! Go away!
That’s a horrible thing to say to someone, especially a friend! She explicitly ties Sabrina’s worth (or lack thereof) to having powers. And the real kicker? This is the last thing she does before the failed akumatization. Out of context, Chloé resisting akumatization might seem heroic. With this context? It’s anything but.
The Overdue Conclusion
Ultimately, a Redemption Arc is a narrative process for developing a character. It’s a trope, a storytelling pattern. The key element of such an arc is change. A static character cannot undergo a redemption arc (or indeed any arc), because the arc is the process of transformation, of becoming a better person. Not just on the surface, but in a fundamental way. A post redemption character is, in some ways, a different person to who they were before.
During seasons two and three of Miraculous Ladybug, Chloé does not change in such a way. She’s just as cruel and spiteful after becoming Queen Bee as she is before. She does bad things for bad reasons. Her motivation for being Queen Bee is entirely selfish. Indeed, while there is some feeling of a divide between Marinette and Ladybug, Queen Bee is simply Chloé with superpowers. And while she may be a victim of abuse from Audrey, that doesn’t mean she is excused from abusing others herself.
Chloé’s tragic flaw is her desire to be exceptional, in a way that places her above other people. This is why she fails to change. In the narrative of Miraculous Ladybug, the exceptional that matters is to be exceptionally kind, exceptionally couragous, exceptionally selfless. Character traits which Chloé displays sparingly and insufficently, because she believes she is above them. But without humility, there can be no change. Without change, there can no redemption. And while others might provide a catalyst for such a change, ultimately it must come from within.
The concluding point is that I still don’t think there was a Chloé Bourgeois Redemption Arc, but I can sort of see how you’d fall into thinking one existed. But when you actually examine the character’s behaviour, the illusion quickly crumbles. At this point, the whole thing has clearly taken on a life of its own beyond the source material, and is perhaps unstoppable. Will my long, somewhat rambly Tumblr post make much of a difference? Perhaps not.
But there are harmful ideas attached to it. As long as people try to make Marinette responsible for Chloé’s actions, it adds, however slightly, to the notion that the abused are responsible for the actions of their abusers. In many respects, I don’t care that strongly about these particular fictional characters. Yet other people do, and in doing so I see how they distort the role of victim and victimizer, and I care about that. I understand that it’s not a big serious issue, but it matters to me. So I’ll say my piece, and move on to other thoughts.
