Red Hood Characterization
This is really long so I'm putting a cut here, I've been thinking about Jason Todd's character motivations and the question of whether or not his actions are based in a Moral Code (I don't think so, not to say he's without any morality) and I talk about that in more depth here.
I saw someone say on here that Titans: Beast World: Gotham City was some of the best Jason Todd internal writing they'd seen in a while, and I've been a Red Hood fan for 8 years or so now? pretty much since I read comics for the first time, so I went and checked out and I thought it was good! The way the person I saw talking about it as if it was rare and unusual made me wonder though, because as well-written as it was, there wasn't really anything in it that went against the way I conceptualize Jason?
This kinda plays into a larger question I've been thinking about for a while with Jason though, which is that, do people think that the killing is part of a fundamental worldview that motivates him a la batman, and that worldview is the reason he does the things he does?? Because 8 years ago i was a middle schooler engaging with fiction on the level that a middle schooler does, so I simply did not put much thought into it beyond "poor guy :(" but ever since I actually started trying to understand consistent characterization, I don't really see Jason as someone who's motivated by a moral code in his actions the way batman or superman is!
tbh my personal read is that he's a very socially-motivated guy, his actions from resurrection to his Joker-Batman ultimatum in utrh always seemed to me like every choice made leading up to his identity reveal was either a. to give him the leverage and skill necessary to pull off his identity reveal successfully, or b. to twist the knife that little bit more when he does let Bruce find out who he is. Like iirc there's a Judd Winick tweet like "yeah tldr he chose Red Hood as his identity because it's the lowest blow he could think of." And I think that's awesome, I think character motivations rooted so deeply in character's relationships and emotions are really fun to read! I also think it's where the stagnation/flatness of his character comes from in certain comics, because if his main motivation is one event in one relationship that passes, and he is not particularly attached to anything in his life or the world by the time that comes to pass, it's a little harder to come up with a direction to go with the character after that, because there isn't much of a direction that aligns with something the character would reasonably want? But I do think solving this by saying "all of the morally-off emotionally driven cruelty he did on his way to spite Batman was actually reflective of his own version of Batman's stance that's exactly the same except he thinks it's GOOD to kill people" isn't ideal. To be fully honest, it seems to me like he never particularly cared one way or the other about killing people to "clean Gotham of crime," he just did everything he could to get the power necessary to pull off his personal plans, and took out any particularly heinous people he encountered along the way (like in Lost Days.) Not to say I think the fact he killed people keeps him up at night anymore than everything else in his life events, I just never really thought he was out there wholeheartedly kneecapping some dude selling weed or random guy robbing a tv store for justice.
Looping wayyy back to my question, Is this (^) contradictory to the way he's written/the overall average perception of the character? Because like I enjoyed his writing in Beast World i have zero issue with anything there, I just didn't believe it would be a hot take, like yeah, that is Jason. It's been a while since I've read utrh and lost days, but I don't think my takeaway directly contradicts either of those too bad iirc. Idk all this to say I think Jason killing and being alright with killing is an obvious and objective fact, but i guess i've always seen it as more of a practical tactic than a moral belief, and I think taking the actions made during the lowest points of a character's life where he is obsessively focused on this ONEEEE thing and trying to apply it as a Motivating Stance to everything he's done after that, doesn't really follow logically for me.

You guys ever think about how Bruce feels when one of the batlings call him Dad? Or refer to him as their dad? Or how he feels when he steps into a fatherly role for a bat?
I mean yeah its mostly done in public, Dick has always called Bruce Dad or refer to him as his father since he was old enough to go to galas. And yeah at first the word felt like nails scraping down a chalk board because Bruce isn't worth being a dad, not in his head at least. He was still in his twenties, and Dick already had a dad. One who loved him. But he tolerates the word anyway, because its just to keep up appearing right?
Nowadays, having repaired their severed relationship, Bruce wants to hear the word. He misses it but he doesn't dare ask. But when he reveals that he officially adopted Dick and he hugs him and says "I love you Dad." Bruce can't help but cry, sob quietly as he clutches his son in his arms. "I don't want to replace your father." He says, begging his voice to not waver, it doesn't listen. "You're not," Dick responds, "You're just standing on the same level as him. My dads and my mom. My parents."
When Barbara becomes Batgirl Bruce is terrified. He knows the kind of sick freaks out there, who ogle her in her Batgirl suit. It makes his blood boil the way any father's would. Except he isn't her father. She has Jim for that. And even if she's dating Dick, Bruce can't seem to figure out why he's treating her like this, why he's keeping her patrol limited, why he's texting Commissioner Gordon in panic whenever she's late. Jim laughs and says its like they're co parents and something in Bruce's heart jabs.
When she's paralyzed by the Joker Bruce isn't sure what to do. He pays her medical bills and has a back and forth with Jim, "Its my fault he found out she was Batgirl!", "He didn't, he did it because she's a Gordon! It's my fault!". Bruce crues over her in the comatose state, apologizing over and over, its his fault, his minds been made up. When she becomes Oracle there's nothing he wouldn't do to accommodate her. Barbara may not legally be his daughter, but she kind of it his first daughter.
When Jason comes around and starts calling Bruce dad at galas, he's more comfortable around the word. He can be a dad to Jason, Jason didn't get to have a good dad but Bruce bought a parenting book (What to Expect when Moving from Raising One Kid to Two) and he's handling it. But then he dies and Bruce is met with the guilt of knowing that he failed his son. Because even though Dick was his ward and first born, Jason was the first one he was okay with referring to as a son.
And then he came back and Bruce is no longer dad. He's B or Old Man. Its better than "the asshole who let me die" so he'll take what he can get. Except once at a gala Jason has a bit of a Freudian slip and refers to Bruce as his dad and he leaves the room to burst into tears. Jason doesn't hate him and while he's grateful part of his mind knows he should. He deserves to be hated, Jason is just too much of a good person to do it. But it doesn't matter, Jason's still his son and his heart still stutters whenever he's reminded of that. Jason is his son, his boy.
When he meets Tim, Bruce is scared all over again. He doesn't want to be Tim's dad. Tim already has a dad—and in Bruce's self loathing mind, a neglectful father is still better than whatever impersonation of a dad he could be. But Tim is stubborn, he latches on and somewhere along the lines after his emancipation, Bruce realizes that he's Tim's dad. And he wants to be Tim's dad. And he won't fail Tim the way he did Dick or Jason, he made too many mistakes with them.
Tim sometimes feels out of place. Bruce doesn't know why, he belongs into their family (cult as Jason says affectionately) and Bruce will always remind him of that. Tim is his son and Bruce will never get over that, he gets to see this boy grow up to be great. And maybe when Tim's sleep deprived he calls Bruce dad, but thats between him, Tim and the tear stained pillow on Bruce's bed.
And then there's Steph. Stephanie Brown forced her way into the Batfamily by dating Tim and even after they broke up, she's not leaving. And Bruce doesn't want her to. She's made it clear she doesn't want to be a Wayne officially, she's fine just being Steph. Except, Bruce kind of thinks Steph is like his daughter too. She's not just some random girl he finds overly bubbly, her bubbliness reminds him if Dick, her street smarts remind him of Jason. But despite that Steph is so unique. And even if she has a dad, Bruce can't help it. He personally decorated a room at the manor for her, had it painted purple and everything. Steph might not be a Wayne by name, but she is in everything else. And Bruce is kind of okay with that.
And then there's the two kids who refer to him as their dad all the time.
Cassandra Cain becomes Cassandra Wayne and she never looks back. She rarely speaks, she's content with sign language and you best believe the rest of the family learns it to communicate with her comfortably. But something in Bruce's heart flutters when she refers to him as Dad. When she signs about one of her dance recitals, Don't forget dad! Or when she's bragging and boasting at a gala about him, My dad's not like that! He's really nice!
And then there's Damian. He couldn't run away from being his father if he wanted to. Which he doesn't. Damian called him Father, rather stiffly for the first two years together. But then one day he's talking to Jon and Bruce isn't trying to eavesdrop but he's not perfect do he does and he hears Damian refer to him as Baba and he almost trips over his own feet. Damian, ever the observer, notices him immediately and then he's suddenly calling him Baba more often, Baba I'm going to walk Titus or Baba, Grayson is trying to hug me again. Doesn't matter the context, hearing Damian utter the endearment makes his heart melt every damn time.
But when Duke rolls around, heartbroken and unfairly orphaned, Bruce is terrified all over again. He's not ready to force Duke into accepting him as a father, Duke has a dad. Bruce doesn't want to replace him. But Duke, much like Tim, latches on. He needs a father. He needs one to guide him, to help him forge his own path. And Bruce can't help himself. He's a father. He's Dukes father.
Bruce being a dad but hating himself for it while loving his kids but hating that he's forced to be their dad because the world was cruel to them.

I Thought Of You
Jason Todd X Reader
Warnings:suggestive content, explicit language, whump, past child neglect and drug overdose mentioning
Words:1478
Tyler panicked as he calls his Dad's girlfriend after his Dad loses conscious....
Tyler's hands shake as he unlocked his dad's phone. He began to stutter as he went to his recent calls. Inside his recent phone calls was Alfred from 3 days ago and Y/N today. He quickly called her thinking of her first.
-"hey-- Tyler is that you baby?.." he couldn't calm down "shh shh shh it's OK deep breaths baby" she cooed Tyler listened to her taking deep breaths "good job buddy. Now tell me what's wrong? Are you ok? Where's Jason?"
"it's-it's Jay he fell on the floor and he won't get up and I don't think he can hear me" the young child cried.
Y/N's heart falls as she rushes to get her keys
"ok baby don't panic, don't worry. I'm coming right now. Did he hit his head on anything? A hard object of any kind?" she asked "what happened during patrol?"
"no he just fell onto the floor. We were on patrol and he breathed in fear toxin but he had the antidote! I'm really really scared Y/N"
She, stayed on the phone with Tyler while driving to their house. She parks in their driveway. She quickly cuts the engine.
"ok Tyler I'm here I'm coming inside right now it's gonna be OK" she softly said hearing him crying
"o-ok"
She, hangs up slamming her car door shut, running into the house. With much haist Y/N came inside and shuts the door behind her. She sees Jason laying on the living room floor. He was barely coherent only able to try desperately to keep himself from passing out. Tyler was sitting on the floor beside his dad. Y/N runs to him and moved to her knees. She leans to his nose hearing a shallow breath, and then to his chest.
"his breathing is small but he's OK.. Let's put him onto the couch"
Y/N moved her arms through around his chest lifting Jason onto the couch. Jason sits on the couch as he began shivering from the intense heat. Somehow he knew he was OK. Tyler stood close by trying to keep his tears back.
Y/N leaned close to Jason feeling his forehead that feels as if he has a fever. She rubs his burning forehead.
He began blinking his vision blurred. He had his eyes half open to only barely see her deeply worried face.
"... Y/N?..." he slurred
"shh I'm here. You're safe honey just try to relax, ok? I'm right here Jason" she ensures
Hearing her voice, he knew for sure he was safe. That his little boy is safe. That she is safe.
Y/N took off his jacket following by his shirt. Tyler helped her by taking his shoes and socks off. She then undid his belt.
"can you try to stand with me" she gently said
Jason gave her sloppy nod. She helped him stand onto his feet. He gently applied his weight on her so he wouldn't fall. She pushed his jeans down to his ankles. She holds onto him while Jason's legs shake slightly stepping out of his jeans and was now only wearing his boxers. Y/N motions him to lay on the couch.
She inspected Jason in great detail.. She still sees no injuries which meant it was the fear toxin and not a wound.
"Tyler can you run and get me the medical bag from his room?"
"on it!" Tyler promised running to get the bag
Tyler returned with the bag. She opens it finding the thermometer, she places it in his mouth. She ran her knuckles through his hair. The thermometer began beeping. She takes it from his mouth.
"102. 5" she sighed.
"that's bad..." Tyler said shakily
She touches his am sweetly "oh don't worry baby he'll be OK"
"I'm glad you're here" he said as his eyes were starting to swell
She kissed Tyler's head knowing exactly what was going through the poor child's mind. Jason had told how his mother had overdosed a week before he adopted him.
As Jason slept Tyler left to get another blanket for his Dad... She uses her spy-contacts to tell Batman that the fear toxin had been modified to have a stronger effect and to cause fevers. He then thanked her for the information and asked how his son was.
As she responded to Bruce. Jason softly groaned mumbling a barely audible words as they slurred. She leans close to him kissing his cheek.
"I'm right here" she reminds him fearing his was having a nightmare
He didn't listen as kept trying to say what his heart was screaming to say.. She listened carefully to him. She nearly gasps hearing what he said. He leans into her touch basking in her presence he never wants to stray away from.
"ma... Ary.. Me.. Y/N" he slurred.
Y/N gasps her eyes start to shake. She scolds herself for externally freaking out. They had discussed marriage.. But she didn't expect him to say anything now.. He probably is emotional from the intense fever. Jason may not even remember this..
"I.." she didn't mind saying yes twice or even more times "yes I will marry you"
She kissed him and is then nearly tackled from Tyler. The red-headed boy began to cry. She then to lost control as she hugged him. She holds Jason's hand. Tyler's embrace gave her all the reassurance she needed. Soon thereafter Jason in a slurred speech told Tyler to get the ring..
Hours later. Tyler and Y/N began making soup for Jason for when he gets hungry. They had just finished baking cookies and we're enjoying it so much they decided to keep at it.
Jason gently stirs in his sleep he blinks several times. He feels the weighted blanket on him and the cool rag on his forehead. His body feels weak as he turns his head, his headache became worse.
He blinks again to see Y/N's phone on his coffee table. Then he began to allow panic to settle into his heart. Where were they?
"Y/N!! Tyler!!" Jason quickly moves his covers wincing from the sharp pain to his head from the horrible migraine.
He quickly moved to his feet but as he stands his knees try to buckle beneath him. He heavily breathed trying to keep from falling just as she came running to him. She rushed to Jason to keep him from falling.
"what are you doing Babe?!"
She then understand the answer of her question seeing the panic in his wavered breath. He let out a helpless cry shedding a tear. He began to stutter as he feels her arms finally wrap around his neck.
Jason heavily breathed in and out of his mouth. He hugged her tightly unable to calm down through his breath. He buried his heart wrenching face within the crook of her neck. She gently guided him back to couch sitting him down. Jason clings to her waist as he began to cry.
"shh we're here. Tyler's ok, I'm ok, you're OK" she whispered
She holds his fearful face in her hands. He holds her wrist his face clenched tightly. She kissed him wiping his tears away. Just then a smaller pair of feet come into the room.
"daddy" Tyler cautiously said
"son" Jason gasped with a wavered breath.
Tyler approaches him touching his face. Jason's heart couldn't bear the thought of never seeing his little boy. Never seeing his love.. His heart made his arms weaken more as they try to hold onto his son. Tyler hugged Jason, sweetly rubbing his Dad's back. Jason moved his arm to move Y/N into their embrace.
Jason then truly realized.. It was just a nightmare.
As Jason started to feel his body calm down and his migraine feel less intense. The two sit beside him. They're ok, he remind himself. He saw the light hit the diamond on her finger.
".. Is that... Did I" Jason was in shock yet again.
"You *ahem* did" she nervously answered
"you said yes! You said yes!!" he hugs her, laying his head on her chest "oh shit Y/N I wanted to be perfect to what you deserved. I'm so happy you said yes.."
"oh oh I made cookies and soup with Y/N's help of course I'll go get it" Tyler grinned running off
"ok buddy" Jason chuckled. He softly laughs seeing his clothes on the floor "did we uh"
"no we did not pervert" she laughs kissing his head
"well at least I'll remember when we do" he sits up and pulls her into his lap "I owe you big time then, huh? I get a damn fever and propose to you. I had a whole weekend planned for you"
"I'm happy where ever I am with you and our little boy" she smiled to him
