I don’t know if I ever told this story on here but apparently when my mom was back in college one of her final exams was scheduled for the evening of the mash finale and a bunch of students complained and threw a fit until finally the professor was like “show of hands: how many of you are planning on skipping my exam to go watch mash?” And like a good 80% raised their hands and the prof was like “…and what if that meant you failed the entire course?” And apparently only a few students put their hands down so the guy had to reschedule the exam. Moral of the story: there’s power in numbers and also mash was and forever will be more important than statistical analysis

Today marks the 41st anniversary of “Goodbye, Farewell and Amen” airing on CBS. The record breaking finale closed out the eleven year run of M*A*S*H and brought an end to the Korean War. The final scene of the series with “Goodbye” written out in rocks, a message from B.J. to Hawkeye, with the broken down 4077th in the background has become an iconic image.

([BJ] stands in the doorway for a moment, reluctant to leave.)
HAWKEYE: Go. What are you waiting for?
BJ: I don’t know. I just thought there might be something we wanted to say to each other before I left.
BJ: (saying good-bye without saying it)
BJ: (remembering) I better leave a note for Hawkeye.
BJ: Will you talk to Hawkeye for me? I tried to write him a note, but there was too much to say.
HAWKEYE: Where’s BJ?
POTTER: (gently) You just missed him.
HAWKEYE: There’s nothing here I’m gonna miss. (They look at each other for a moment.) Except you.
HAWKEYE: What would you do if I was dying? Would you hold me and let me die in your arms, or would you just let me lay there and bleed?
HAWKEYE: (pointedly) Good-bye.
BJ: (won’t say it) See you later.
BJ: (in high spirits from a little wine) I was all set to go back to Mill Valley to Peg and Erin and all that. But (…) I met this cookie in an airport bar who begged me to run off with her, and I figured, what the hell? You only live once, you know. (BJ is convulsed with laughter and collapses against Hawkeye helplessly.)
HAWKEYE: (after a beat, not knowing how to say good-bye) So…
BJ: (not wanting to say good-bye) Come on, I’ll give you a ride up there.
HAWKEYE: I want you to know how much you’ve meant to me. I’ll never be able to shake you.
HAWKEYE: I’ll miss you.
BJ: I’ll miss you a lot. I can’t imagine what this place would have been like if I hadn’t found you here.

this letter from a fan, one of several selected by Arlene and Alan Alda for inclusion in "The Last Days of MASH" perfectly conveys the significance of the final scenes of GFA, why they are so narratively satisfying and why it's worth saying "goodbye" at all
