What is normal? There’s nothing normal about Gorillaz, and that’s what makes us real. Life with the boys has been chaotic, but out of chaos comes art. And really dirty carpets. But I’ve weathered the storm. I started out as the baby of the band, and now I play the role of big sister, counselor, nurse, and occasionally probation officer.
Being a pop star is cool sometimes, but not other times, like when people take photos of you going to the toilet. So I’d say, “Don’t get into it for fame; do it ’cos you enjoy it.” My favourite job was running the dodgems at Eastbourne funfair. I’d go back in a second, but Murdoc threatened to take me down, Gladiator-style, if I ever left Gorillaz. He has a whip and a trident, and a leather loincloth, so I know he’s serious.
