#gosick new continent
Hello everyone!
My name is Krys and I’m an amateur translator. I’m a huge fan of Gosick, and when I decided to learn Japanese by translating, Gosick New Continent was the first project that popped into my head. I love Victorique and Kujo, so knowing how their story continues after the war has been on my mind for quite awhile. I finally managed to get my hands on a copy of Gosick Red, the first book in the sequel series, and figured I wasn’t the only one interested in more of our Charming Monster and the little rabbit who was her heart.
What you can expect from this blog: I’ll be posting the translation by chapter (or parts of chapter depending), though I’m still working out the details of how that will look. I’ll also post updates on how the translating is progressing (since this is my first time translating something like this, I can’t promise it will go quickly).
As of now, the prologue is about a third of the way done and I’m hoping to have it finished and available by 9/6/2020.
If you have any questions, or even just want to message me to discuss Gosick, my inbox is open and available!

Interesting Character Study with an Unusual Backdrop
If you have been following this blog for a while, you will probably know that I like anime that is unusual and interesting. Gosick is an anime that is both of these. It’s a romance anime which goes into quite a lot of detail about both the main characters (their personality, their history etc). However it has the backdrop of a murder mystery.
Gosick opens in a boarding school in the fictional country of Sauville in 1920s Europe, with the Japanese exchange student Kujo as he begins his classes. As Kujo is from Japan, and has black hair, in contrast to everyone else in the school, who appears to be fair-haired, he is given the name of The Black Reaper by his classmates. His namesake is a fictional figure from Sauville folklore, who is representative of bad things to come. Being seen as a bad omen by his classmates, Kujo often spends his free time out of class, wandering around the school grounds. On one of these wanderings he goes into the school library, where he finds a short, blonde haired girl called Victorique (pronounced Victorika), who is immersed in a book on the top floor. Kujo discovers that even though Victorique is also a student in the school, she dislikes attending classes and prefers to spend her time in the library, reading books and occasionally assisting her step-brother, who is a detective in the nearby town, with cases he can’t solve. Kujo tags along with Victorique and helps her solve various mysteries, while at the same time gradually learning more and more about her.
There are not many characters in Gosick and so the anime spends a lot of time developing the ones that are there. I really like the way it does this by using symbolism, for example, the house on the school grounds which Victorique lives in is situated behind a large maze, which people have to find their way through in order to reach the front door. This shows that Victorique is closed off emotionally and doesn’t like people to see her true self. She is like the house in the middle of the maze. people have to spend a lot of time figuring her out before they eventually find her true personality. I like this about anime. the fact that not everything is just told to you via dialogue, but some things you have to notice.
In the title of this post, I mention that Gosick has an unusual backdrop. This is for two main reasons. The first is that the anime is set in Europe. Most anime tends to be set either in Japan or in a fictional world like in the far future, on a different planet, or not even on a planet at all. There is the odd anime which is set in the midst of major cultural movements in other continents such as the gang wars in New York City, or gangsters in Central and South America. Very few anime are set in Europe and even fewer are set in the 1920s.
The second reason this anime has an unusual backdrop is because the story is set against a series of murder mysteries. This is a bit odd for any romance story. However I think this works because the murder mysteries themselves do not detract your focus from the main emphasis of the story, which is the romance between Victorique and Kujo. They are actually fairy simple and so you are able to focus on the romance element of the anime.
I would recommend Gosick. I think it is a really interesting anime. it goes into quite a lot of details about both the main characters and I like the way in which it does this, by not just telling you everything through dialogue, but also by using other methods such as symbolism. I also like the backdrop that is used as I dont think this particular setting is used a lot in anime, although I wouldn't recommend too close attention to the murder mysteries as they are not the best.

Gosick Red: Prologue
Prologue
Night
The man had a long dream. A space filled with darkness. It’s a dream of a pitch-dark basement. It was exactly as he remembered it in the past. Back in an exotic forest. A town where residents were evacuated and forgotten by the war. An old mountain outside the town. A man walks down the dark stairs to the basement with a candle in his hand… A foot wearing black military shoes steps on a cracked stone step… Pichon, Pichon… The sound of groundwater exuding is echoing. After climbing the stairs, the man unlocks and opens the heavy iron door.
The ancient darkness fell away as he opened the door. As soon as he walked on the water with uncertain footsteps, his screams echoed through the room as if it was a child’s nightmare. Boys and girls cry. The man shakes his shoulders and begins to laugh. He slowly illuminates the area with candles. A steel iron torture device is hung on the exposed stone wall. The floor is littered with dirty jugs and plates. In the corner of the room… Terrified children, Oriental boys and girls, upon opening their eyes and seeing the man, gave up.
The man exhales satisfactorily. Which toys to play with tonight?
He raises a low laugh. Then the children start crying quietly. The faces are lightly soiled and the bodies are thin. There are also children with missing limbs. However, no adult bothers to worry about the lost children. It’s because everyone is busy with the war. They are abandoned and forgotten beings.
“Kukukuku! Hahahahaha!”
The man screamed and laughed, and the children’s screams rose like a symphony. The man swings his body like he’s dancing to a phantom song, illuminating the children’s faces one after another with the flame of the candle.
“Screaming or asking for help is useless. What can you do?” He ridicules them and looks at one girl, pulling her arm violently. Her arms were incredibly thin, scratched, and bony all over.
His laughter increases.
And then… From the ceiling or beyond the wall, or no, from outside this dream… From a distance, someone’s voice echoed. It was a low voice that creaked like an old woman. However the sound is also strangely young.
“In that case, there is no choice but to help each other. I’m trying to work with others to escape the warring countries created by stupid adults. And… Some of us will one day reach a new land and take root. That is the hope in despair. It will be difficult. But surely we can do it!”
“Who is that?”
The man used a candle light to inspect the area. But, in the basement there is no one but the poor children. He illuminates each person’s face.
“Who is talking?”
He was trembling with anger as he looked at one person, then another person… Then he found a particularly thin figure who was crouching in the corner and began to illuminate it. Then the little girl looked up at the man with a scathing look. Unlike the Oriental children… Emerald green eyes and silver hair! Rosy cheeks! She’s so beautiful, and at the same time she feels like a demon, like it’s a forbidden beauty… there shouldn’t be children like her!
The man slowly backs away.  “Who is that…? You’ve come into my dream to say such boring things…” he moaned. Then he grabbed a giant horse whip down from the wall and tried to swing it down to the girl’s face. “Who are you?”
And then…
There was a loud noise and a dark liquid flows from the door of the basement. There’s a bright light… a sea of blood is rushing in. The man tries to escape in a hurry, but he is suddenly swallowed by blood. He desperately sucks in a breath and looks around for help. However, before the man knew what was happening, the children and girl with mysterious green eyes… had disappeared. Only the man, alone, keeps spinning in the middle of the blood whirlpool forever. He was swallowed by blood while writhing. First his chin, his lips, his nose, his open eyes, and so on. Finally his head… it disappears at the bottom of the bright sea.
From such a dream… The man gradually awakens. While screaming, he clenched the edge of his pillow and tried to shake off the nightmare…
The man muttered and opened his eyes...
