Lipstick Stains

Billy Hargrove x Harrington FemReader

Summary: There has been some new gossip floating through Hawkins High. The gossip being that Billy has a lipstick stain that just so happens to match a certain girl's iconic shade.

You were a Harrington. You had a certain standing that you had to keep cause of the expectations of your parents. One of those expectations were not making out with Billy Hargrove in his car in the back of the school parking lot during lunch. But your parents were never home so you didn't really give a damn.

"Billy we have to go back into the school at some point." You said releasing your lips from his. As you tried to pull back he pulled you in for another quick kiss.

"Oh come on, we don't have to." He smirked to you.

"Listen Mr. Bad Boy, I know you don't like school but I have a test." You said to him. He gave you a small pout at your response to which you just laughed at him. "You also messed up my lipstick." You said as you flipped the visor down to use the mirror to reapply your dark red lipstick.

"That's not the only thing I can mess up." He joked. You just gave him the look, he knew the look. It didn't need a name.

"Well Hargrove I have to get going." You brought yourself close to kiss his neck then up to the apple of his freckled cheeks. You collected you things to go back into the school before the bell. Before you shut the door you look back at Billy to see the two kiss marks that you left on him. You just smiled at him.

"Love ya, see you later." You said then shut the door to go to the school.

Billy continued with his day like usual. Thinking that nothing would go out of the ordinary. He knew he was hot shit so people were staring at him as perusal but he didn't know what they were staring at. In each class he had stares his way, to which he had to tell some off for looking too long.

"Nice job man." Tommy Hagan laughed as he patted his back. Billy was just confused about what he was talking about but he continued as nothing was wrong. The bell rang through the halls to signal that the school day was over. Billy made his way to the doors top the parking lot to leave when he saw a certain Steve Harrington staring him down from his locker.

"You got a problem Harrington?" He asked.

"Yeah, not with you though." Steve replied slamming his locker shut to go find a certain sister of his. Billy didn't know that, he was just confused and thought nothing of it. He finally was able to make it to his Camaro to wait for Max. Students around him were still looking at him. Some girls looking in distaste, not at him but at the kiss marks on his cheeks. Some guys were just laugh in congrats to him. Billy just wanted to get the hell out and get Max home so he can go see his girlfriend. Billy looked over to see a certain red head making her way over to his car.

"Get in shit-bird, I got places to be." He said as he got in the drivers seat while Max got in the passenger seat. She just stared at him, more than she would usually. Which is not at all. Billy glanced at her a few times.

"What?" He asked annoyed with her staring.

"What's on your face?" She asked. Billy was confused until he thought back to lunch. He grabbed his sun visor to look himself in the mirror to see the two kiss marks on him. Just as he thought, one on his cheek and the other on his neck. He just laughed what he was looking at.

"Well that explains a Lot." He sighed starting his car to drive away.

Later that day Billy was able to make it to the Harrington house hold. Instead of parking down the street, he parked in the driveway. Instead of climbing through the window of his girlfriends bedroom, he simply knocked the front door of her house. Which, unfortunately, the other Harrington answered. He and Steve just stared at one another for a moment.

"Hargrove."

"Harrington."

"What are you doing here?"

"I think you know why exactly I'm here, or you don't."

"I do know why you're here." Steve stated sternly.

"Then tell me, why am I here?" Billy gabbed at him with a smirk playing on his face.

"Can you guys stop having a dick measuring contest for once." Your voice was heard in a very much over it tone. "Get out of here Steve."

"But-" You stopped him from continuing.

"Eh, I don't wanna hear any more then I already have. You're being a Buttface." You sassed at him. "Now I would like to talk to my boyfriend."

Steve just rolled his eyes and sighed. Walking away from his enemy and his sister in the same door way. You turn your head back to Billy with a grin on your face.

"So what are you doing here, handsome."

"Well, I am here to see my girlfriend that I have to have a small chat about." His voice going a slight octave lower. Something that you loved.

"And what do you have to chat about?" You stilled teased at him.

"Well I made out with this gorgeous woman at lunch, and after I thought my day would go by like usual. But I had people staring at me all day. I didn't know why until I looked into the mirror to find that the exact pretty girl I was kissing left some marks on me." He explained to you. "Now I am at said pretty girls house to get a reason why she did that."

"Well I think she just wanted to have a bit of fun with you, if you ask me."

"Well as much as I love that, I think I would love to have some fun with her right now."

"Well you'er gonna have to wait on that, handsome." You said." Big Bro ain't to happy with me, I've been getting an ear full for the past hour."

"I can wait." He reassured. "I will always wait for you, gorgeous." You just smiled at him and dragged him into your house.

"Is he staying long?" Steve's distant voice was heard.

"Shut up Steve." You yelled out to him. "Like I said, ear full all day."

You and Billy just laughed at the situation. But at least you both can enjoy each others company in the end.

They passed! At first I thought this was the worst timing to bring up Uraraka's crush, but it was actually the best time. I don't know if Aoyama is smarter than I realized, or if it is coincidental that his gossip girl tendencies paid off for them.

Out of context, this screenshot is absurd af. 'mELtINg tHe pRiNcIpAL bAd, hAhA.' You know, deep down, they would not be that sad if the principal had a melt-death, lol. Just look at those cheeky little smiles.

What kind of Rocket Raccoon backstory? Who was experimenting on him and why? Why would someone want to make a hyper intelligent little bear? What if he is secretly a villain? Maybe letting Mina melt him isn't a bad idea after all. My head is spinning.

What are these nutso background facts about the UA staff? He hosts a radio show from 1AM-5AM - WHEN DOES HE SLEEP? Is his high-energy pure caffeine? Aizawa should be bringing Mic a matching sleeping bag to work everyday.

Not to mention the little trivia that he made everyone's ears bleed the second he was born. Honestly, iconic of him.

If someone told me I had to communicate with bugs, I would cut them out of my life forever. Koda's meltdown is so justified.

And the cutest moment of the episode award goes to -

I wonder what Koda and his family's character design is based on? It is very unique.

He speaks! Jirou really carried this exam and used both of their quirks in such a smart way. I love these kinds of episodes where I get to see the side-characters shine.

she grew up watching horror movies, supernatural, stranger things and all the things that scared you. she loved black. her whole house was black. the first time you slept in her bedroom you thought demons were watching you from how black and dark the room was. she loved rock and metal and knew nothing about pop music.

you, on the other hand, grew up watching gilmore girls and gossip girl. elle woods and regina george were your icons. you wanted to be sharpay evans and have all of her clothes. you grew up listening to britney spears and christina aguilera and you knew nothing about rock. legally blonde was your favorite movie and you made rhea watch it with you so many times she lost count. you loved pink, it was your favorite color. your clothes were pink. your phone was pink. your apartment was pink. your sofa was pink. your bed was pink. even your car was pink. your whole life was pink.

rhea almost had a heart attack the first time she stepped into your apartment or the first time she saw your car. too much pink and she wasn’t used to it, the same thing that you weren’t used to so much black.

but somehow you managed to get together and you were inseparable.

you were so impatient to see the new barbie movie but all of your friends were on vacation with their relatives so the only person available to come with you was rhea, but you knew she wouldn’t say yes. she hated barbies, she always did.

but nothing stopped you from asking her when you saw her getting home with some groceries. you were at her place in your perfect matching pink outfit when you saw her walking into the living room.

“hi baby” she greeted you, kissing your lips.

“hi” you smiled “how was your day?” you asked.

“good, how about you” she sat down on the couch next to you.

“it was good…” now or never “rhea, are you free tonight?”

“yes, do you have any plans? she smirked.

oh you had plans, just different from what she thought.

“can you come with me to see barbie?” you asked in your soft voice.

“absolutely no”

“rhea please…” you begged her.

“no”

“rhea…”

“no, i’m not seeing barbie” she said sternly.

“please? please please please” you kept saying. you really wanted to see the movie but going alone at the cinema was one of your biggest fear so you wanted her to come with you.

“no, i’m not coming”

“just for tonight…” you whispered.

you knew she didn’t like barbies but you never thought she would react like this. it was for a few hours and a movie definitely wouldn’t kill her.

“no y/n…i’m not seeing that stupid movie” she said and that was the last straw. you couldn’t believe she called barbie stupid.

“okay fine i’m going alone…” you said, standing up not even watching her and getting your things ready to leave.

she waited a few minutes thinking you were joking but when she heard the tingling of your car keys in your hands she knew you were dead serious. she rushed to the front door to stop you.

“hold on hold on…you’re not really going alone, are you?” she asked you.

“well my friends aren’t in town and my girlfriend’s acting like a movie could kill her so i have no other options…”

“let me put on my shoes…” she said giving up. she hated barbies but she hated seeing you sad and she hated more knowing that she caused you to be sad.

“for real?”

“yes, for real…” she said “but i’m not wearing any matching pink outfit okay?”

“okay!” you almost crushed her between your arms.

once you arrived at the cinema, rhea’s heart missed a few beats as she saw the majority of the people dressing in pink or in barbie’s outfits. she felt like an outsider and you couldn’t help the laugh leaving your mouth.

once inside you couldn’t contain your happiness seeing everyone wearing pink and for the first time in your life you felt accepted and not judged.

nothing to say, the movie was a masterpiece. you cried, laughed, danced and cried again. it was the perfect movie for barbie and you saw rhea tearing up a little towards the end but you pretended you didn’t see it because rhea would find a way to make you forget about it.

but in the end you saw her happy and she saw how happy and joyful you were after seeing the movie and even if she hated pink she knew she could make an exception for you and you only.

Eddie hadn't meant to work so late. Really, he hadn't. But the holidays were always brutal, the fourth coming up, and every car in the world needed their tires rotated and oil changed before traveling. Which wouldn't be so bad, if the heat wasn't so brutal.

Eddie was tired, beyond exhausted. He longed for a hot shower to wash the grime of the dirt off, a beer maybe even sneak a blunt out in the shed, and his bed. His bed with you in it. He'd worried when he told you he'd be working late, that you'd be upset, that you'd cancel or huff at him angrily.

Instead, there you were. In your sweat pants, hair pulled back in one of those funny headbands Brielle was always wearing. Brielle beside you in a similar state, eyes glued to the TV.

"Oh my God, Brandi is insane." You gawked at one of the screaming figures on TV.

"Right? She's fucking unhinged, but you know what? Kinda iconic of her." Brielle shrugged, swirling the polish around the small bottle.

You snorted, shaking your head, eyes rolling before cutting back over to Eddie, his frozen, looming figure in the doorway. "Hey, Ed," You smirked, a bright teal face mask covering your skin. Brielle had a matching one, muttering her own greeting towards him.

"Hi girls," Eddie watched carefully, approaching the two of you with all the caution you would a wild animal.

"How was work?" You hummed, eyes still glued to the TV.

"Long." Eddie sighed, leaning over to press a kiss to the top of Brielle's head, another to yours.

"I'm sorry." You grimaced lightly in sympathy. "Brielle and I ordered pizza if you want any. There's some on the counter. I can heat it up for you."

Eddie smiled lightly, squeezing your shoulder lovingly. "Thank you, bunny, but I'm just gonna go take a shower real quick." He was mesmerized, eyes darting back from you to Brielle like he might be dreaming.

"Ok," You nodded, squeezing his hand sweetly. "Just let me know if you want me to heat it up."

"I will." Eddie nodded. He started towards the hall, pausing at the door frame. "Are you two sure you're ok?"

Brielle looked at him like he'd grown three heads, an annoyed snarl that she could have only inherited from Gina. "What?" She asked, brow raising.

"We're fine." You nodded gently. "Just watching the Real Housewives."

Eddie scoffed playfully, rolling his eyes at the two of you. "Oh, well, don't let me keep you." He grinned.

Padding down the hallway, Eddie could hear your muffled voices, excited and cordial for once, not biting or defensive. Brielle's giggles mixing with your own, the sound of the TV washing out the rest of their chatter. Eddie smiled to himself, twisting the shower knob on with a satisfied smirk. Suddenly, he felt better, a little more relaxed and content now that his two favorite girls were finally starting to get along.

WIP Wednesday 5.3.23

Happy Hump Day, tumblrs! I feel as if I have been MIA for a hot minute, but as usual it’s life getting in the way. I’m adulting for a lot of folks in my life right now, which doesn’t leave much time for Robin and what she wants to do. Toss in a job search, a carpal tunnel flare-up, and a car accident (no injuries, cosmetic damage which requires more time (it gonna take effort and rental car set-up to  make my baby pretty again) and a deductible), and … yeah.

However, I am working as best I can on getting stories out of my head and onto the screen; not a lot of snippets but plenty of synopses below the cut if anyone is interested.

Gossip Girls (inspired by CFCW’s #YouGoGirl event): No way will I finish this story by May 4 (Star Wars Day, yay!), hence the “inspired by”.

Queen Riley of Cordonia is having a much-needed, long-awaited brunch with her girls Annabelle Parsons and Yu the Chinese Waitress. There’ll be virgin mimosas, reminiscing on how their friendships began, decent food, a Riam Riley-style breakdown of the Princes’ true parentage, and Riley the Single Mother dealing with three boys who have no idea of public decorum. TCW’s Princess Marguerite may or may not make an appearance.

Fingers: For #WorldWhiskeyDay, this is a compilation of PB characters with a common denominator using liquor to soothe hurts, douse anger, and celebrate milestones.

MAMA Special Stage

Many carats and monbebes are well aware of the friendship between the two groups. One commendable moment was their iconic MAMA special stage.

Yeona had always been timid, si while at rehearsal she had a bit of trouble getting around with the other group. Luckily for her, Monsta X were more than willing to approach her.

"It's hot isn't it?" The younger female heard Hyungwon speak up from behind her. They just finished a take of their performance and now they were given some time to rest before they can start rehearsals again. Yeona turned her head to come face to face with the Monsta X member and nodded her head.

Just then Hyungwon gave out his mini fan to the the girl. Yeona looked at it for a moment, confused. "You can take it" He offers. The seventeen dancer shook her head and gracefully denied his offer, feeling shy that he had to give out that was his.

"Oh no. It's fine, really" She said with a small smile while waving her hands to say no. However, Hyungwon didn't take no for an answer and grabed her hand so he could place the mini fan on her hand. "It's okay, I can share with the other members". As soon as he dropped the item on her hand, he made her fingers grasp it better, and walked with a smile.

Sharing the same dressing room

Not a lot of fans know this but Seventeen and Monsta X used to share dressing rooms when they were rookies (Seungkwan and Chan actually shared this on a live ><)

For a lot of moments, Yeona started to become closer with the other group through this experience. In many cases, she would be sitting on a couch having a casual conversation with I.M. or she would be joking around with Jooheon while they wait to be called for pre-recording.

Sometimes when Yeona would be sitting in front of the mirror while getting touched up, Wonho would sometimes stand behind her making faces in front of the mirror to distract her.

Monbebes and Carats couldn't help but notice when Yeona and Kihyun sitting back and whispering to one another while their members play around. It was as if the two were gossiping about someone by the way they reacted to each other's stories.

It was also funny to see Yeona take videos of Shownu when he was running around in a circle (iykyk) because she couldn't help but think it was hilarious and cute at the same time.

BEING FEATURED ON EX-GIRL

Last 2016, Yeona was given the chance to feature in one of monsta x’s b-side tracks named Ex-Girl. 

This marked as one of her first solo projects outside of Seventeen, and with other artists. People couldn’t help but praise her for her sweet voice and stated that the song matched her really well.

Monsta X even mentioned her during one of their interviews stating that they were really grateful that Yeona accepted the offer to sing alongside them and even talked about how fun it was to work with her. 

“I remember when we first called her to ask her if she wanted to feature in one of our songs and the first thing she told us was ‘If you’re kidding right now, I’ll never talk to you again’. We really didn’t make a wrong choice when we invited her.” - Wonho

Likewise, Yeona also stated that Monsta X had greatly helped her during recording and cheered her on.

“Hyungwon oppa and Minhyuk oppa were were there when I was recording my part of the song. Before I went inside I told them that I was a bit nervous because it was the first song I’ll be recording outside of Seventeen but they really reassured me a lot that I’ll do great and made sure to give me enough encouragement when I was inside the recording booth.”

CALLING EACH OTHER ON VLIVES

Another fan favorite moment was when Jooheon called Yeona while she was doing her birthday live.

In the middle of talking to the fans, Yeona was surprised to suddenly hear her phone ring only to find out it was Jooheon from Monsta X. The girl picked up the call with a smile, "Oppa! Hello!" She greeted happily.

"CHOI YEONA!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!" The older member shouted. The phone wasn't on loud speaker but the viewers could partially hear him due to his shouting. "Thank you!" Yeona shouted back to match his energy. "I'm actually on vlive right now"

"Oh really?"

"Can I put you on speaker?" The girl asked politely. When she got an approval, she turned on speaker mode and asked Jooheon to introduce himself.

"Hi everyone it's Monsta X's Joohoney. Please greet Yeona a happy happy birthday!"

A few seconds later, a muffled voice was heard from the background, then she heard a voice of another member. "Yeona! Happy Birthday!" Changkyun echoed in the background.

Imagine Timo and Emma dressing up as chuck and Blair for Halloween and what the devils Halloween party is like

I smooth down the baby blue fabric of my dress, smiling at how well it replicates Blair’s actually dress in Gossip Girl. Timo is in the bedroom, tying his light pink tuxedo shoes to match his fully white tux.

“Ah you look so good!” I squeal at him. I bite my lip, taking in his whole ensemble. Timo knows nothing about this show. He just knows I picked the ideas, ordered clothes, and told him to put it on. 

“I’m Chuck Bass.” He tries with a cocked eyebrow. I clap excitedly.

“Yes!!” I bounce forward, wrapping him into a hug. 

“I watched a few YouTube videos while I was in the cold tub this morning.”

“Oh my god, you love me.”

“Obsessively.” He murmurs against my mouth. He sucks in a breath as we kiss deeper, then pulls away when Lio whines from the bed. “Did they have one of these?” He asks, pulling Lio into his arms.

“Babe, I just fed him, be careful.” 

“It’s fine.”

“Eventually.”

“Hmm?”

“Eventually they have a kid.” 

“I guess we skipped a lot in between.”

“No, we just made up our own plan.” 

Lio’s nanny comes five minutes later and we are off to the party hosted at the Haula’s. The party is in full swing when we arrive. Nico and Lexi are there dressed as Mario and Princess Peach. 

“Blair and Chuck!” Lexi shouts immediately.

“Yes!” I put my hands in the air, rushing to hug her. “Oh my god I was so nervous no one would get it.”

“It's such an iconic scene though.” She chuckles, handing me a High Noon. “Are you drinking tonight?” 

“Yeah I already fed my baby and pumped.” I rock my hips excitedly. “God, what the hell. Wrap it up or things will be spooky beyond tonight.”  I motion to Nico and Lexi. They both chuckle.

“I offered.” Timo insists, wrapping a hand around my hips after a sip of his beer. “She wanted-“

“Do not say another word.” Nico holds his hand up with a grimace. “Love Lio more than anything, but I do not need to hear about his conception again.” Timo and I both laugh.

(tennis players often come from wealth, much like f1 drivers — they can also be sponsored, sometimes by their country, but usually only if & while they're successful!!)

if you do well, you start to win, maybe you make money, more likely you're breaking even for a while (or even still losing). if you do REALLY well, then you're looking at more prize money and maybe sponsors, so then you can start making some real money out of this. but yeah it's CRAaaaaaazy how much money tennis players pay to play tennis lol!! it is 10000% a problem for getting underprivileged kids into tennis, there's a reason tennis is so white!

Serena is known for doing tiktoks showing her outfits and she introduces Blair to tiktok and forces her to do challenges where they change outfits and ppl have to guess which style is who, that's how Serena introduces her bestie actually and her followers start shipping them.

Serena is a party girl, it girl influencer but her sunny personality makes her very likeable online and so she has a big following. She wears an outfit that B personalized for her once and everyone goes crazy for Bs designs so they start making content w Bs clothes.

Blair and Serena together are the moment, whether they are on a tiktok or walking to school together or at an event people are there for them bc their styles are so iconic and together they match in the best ways. They both basically look like rich monster high dolls. They get vogue to do a note on them and so on.

Sexuallity and gender:

B for Bi, Blair is bi, she is so certain about it since she kissed Serena when they were tweens bc Blair wanted to practice kissing but she was scared to tell Serena because for Blair feelings are very important and she didn't wanna ruin her friendship w S. (She totally posted a lot of situationships memes and blogged about it as a coping mechanism later).

Serena is pan at first but after dating a lot of guys and not falling really in love with any of them she realizes she's a lesbian cause being w Blair fills her with a much stronger kind of love that surpassed all of the others and suddenly her lack of romantic interest and why she can't commit in relationships makes total sense for her and everyone.

Blair is trans, she knew it since she was very young so she had an early transition. Her parents supported her a lot, Her mom being a designer and her dad being gay, they knew all about it. Serena ofc was w her for all of it and was the first to know. When they were little they liked to play dress up w their moms designer clothes and thats how everyone found out.

Serena goes by she/they pronouns, and there's a point in her life where she just doesn't give a fuck about gender or pronouns cause she's very free about it like why do we have to have gender... can't we all just be people? She's very that mentality.

Drugs, addictions and mental health:

Blair vapes and smokes weed, she started smoking with Nate and they just hang out to smoke and talk about feelings, at first Blair had a crush on nate cause he was so charming and they dated but... well you all know what happened. After that they were distant but grew together again as besties.

Blair had an ed and she had an ed twt, Serena made her delete it when she caught her crying with it open. After that she went to a clinic like in canon.

Serena struggles with an addiction with alcohol, she started to drink to cope with stuff, but then she abused it and got to a very bad place and after intervention from her friends she got sober but struggles w it sometimes, she relays on Blair for support.

(Tw noncon) Serena tried coke with Georgina but left it after Blair found out and got really upset about it. Blair got into a fight w georgina about this and the other noncon stuff she did to Serena in canon. Georgina gets cancelled.

Serena and Nate both have adhd and struggle together in class and then in life. Blair, Chuck and Dan helped them study.

Relationships (Everyone):

Like I hinted, Serena and Blair eventually get together. They are the main focus of the story, not in a romantic way but in a soul mates, best friends who love eachother kind of way, the romance ends up being all the things they do for eachother, the risks taking and the heartbreaks and finally the realization. Blair loves reading romance novels and wishes she were in one but little does she knows... until she realizes and starts to obsess with Serena as her prince charming.

Blair has a thing for Jenny at one point but then she sees Serena is dating Georgina and totally goes insane with jealousy and the need to get them apart. Jenny notices a fixation with Serena on Blairs side and gets emo and dark about it, teaming up with Georgina to get Blair and Serena apart. This doesn't work and Jenny realizes too late that she fucked up but at the end of it the only thing that was right was her intuition that there was something going on with S and B that was more than friendship. Jenny gets very heartbroken. She had pictured a life alongside Blair as very famous fashion designers, she hates Serena for taking that away from her.

Serena tries dating Dan and Nate. First Nate and she friend zones him, then Dan and they both realize they are gay together and become besties. Dan goes to Serena with relationship problems. Serena goes to Dan with Blair problems.

Nate, Chuck and Dan are together... Chuck and Nate were besties as kids but Chuck is basically Max from the new gg and started to have a lot of relationships while Nate is more of the romantic type. He falls for Serena first but in doing so he meets Dan and totally falls harder and fast for him. When they start dating Chuck notices and gets jealous, like someone touched his property. Chuck shares this with Blair and Blair just tells him to get over it and since he's the great Chuck Bass, he shouldn't have a problem with getting Nate back. Chuck tries this but Dan doesn't let him, they start an enemies to lovers arc fighting for Nate and then falling for each other. Is so much drama w them.

Georgina is obsessed with Serena in a toxic way, she can't stand Serena's love for Blair being stronger than Serenas love for Georgina so she does pretty nasty stuff to get Serena away from Blair, this ends up blowing up in her face and getting them closer than ever.

Chuck is also trans, his dad was not cool about it and he had a harder time transitioning but he did it anyways. Hes also bi like Blair. Him and Blair are the t4t it couple. They try dating like Serena and Dan but end up as besties who scheme together for Nate and Serenas (and then Dans) love. Nate is pansexual and Dan is gay. Nate uses he/they pronouns and feels about gender very much like Serena. Dan is the only one who is cis.

brief comment i wanted to make, but this was the year i finally took control of my mental health and went to go see someone about it so congratulations to me for finally breaking down the wall of "im fine" and allowing myself to admit that i could use some help. that aside, lets get into it! beware, possible spoilers

MOVIES

1. Nope (dir. Jordan Peele) - this movie surprised me so much and reflects a LOT of my views on performative/spectacle-like behavior in front of the Camera and the effects things like hollywood or social media could potentially have on people...not going to get into that but i just liked the movie alot okay

2. X (dir. Ti West) - love me some camp. love mia goth. i also really liked Pearl and cannot WAIT for MaXXXine, i am so ready

3. Cruel Intentions (dir. Roger Kumble) - i dont think 2022 was the first year i watched Cruel Intentions but everytime i watch it, it feels like something brand new...i am so compelled to read the book that its based on like seriously

4. Turning Red (dir. Domee Shi) - this is the only Disney movie that exists to me...the mother-daughter relationship portrayed here is just so personal

5. Kiki’s Delivery Service (dir. Hayao Miyazaki) - yeah im extremely late to watching this lol. i watched literally every other ghibli film growing up but somehow, in some way, skipped over Kiki. so i watched it over the summer as an adult and needless to say...yeah i missed out as a kid asjashd

6. American Psycho (dir. Mary Harron) - this is the funniest film ive seen this whole year. im not even kidding

TV SHOWS

1. Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul - never thought id enjoy a show about a middle-aged white male turning to meth production to make ends meet and becoming the most annoying character ever created, but here we are. loved it, and literally EVERYONE around walt deserved so much better (jesse, gus, johnny/saul, mike, skylar, marie, hank)

2. Ranma 1/2 - ive taken a break from watching new anime this year and started diving into older ones. i love ranma simply bc its a bit ahead of its time and is just so easy to digest. just a fun little show!!! a great way to take my mind off of shit

3. The Sandman - just found out recently that this was a DC comic so congrats to DC for successfully infiltrating my anti-superhero visual barrier LOL. anyways i am in dire NEED of the next season

4. You - PENN BADGLEY. thats all im going to say. im a huge fan of Gossip Girl (2007) and as soon as i saw him playing the lead character i RAN to watch the first season when it dropped. was not disappointed

5. The Witcher - ive never played the game lol but the show is so good...im not a fan of GoT (and therefore will never watch HotD) so this show p much fills the dark fantasy void for me

6. Bridgerton - im so glad i got over my weird distaste and finally gave this show a try...i see the hype, i see it!! and the show itself is so beautiful to look at, despite being historically innacurate or whatever

7. Gossip Girl (2007) - ive watched and rewatched this show a grand total of maybe like....20 times in my life total. rewatched it again this year. all six seasons. it never gets old despite being the most ridiculous insipid shit ever. im also currently watching the new version, and while i love the cast and maybe the soundtrack, it doesnt match up to the campy and fun vibe that the first one had. it takes itself way too seriously and the plot is almost nonexistent lol

but anyway, lets move on to music!! im skipping over books bc i have currently finished NONE from the book haul i had back in october.

yeah i like gossip girl! i was at the height of that when i was 13 but its a nostalgic show for me. its not a show that i think too much abt ig. mostly i just quote it all the time w my sister. i have a gossip girl character as my icon now bc i like having matching icons w my sister! we like to switch through fictional friendships/sibling dynamics. 

i also LOVE the office and also all sitcoms of that nature (i love parks and rec, superstore, new girl, etc. i love funny shows that focus on sentimental relationships that end up making me ugly cry. i think the office might be my fav but tbh i thought that abt superstore AND new girl before so idk if i even have a fav).

spy x family is a new anime im into these days! its found family and very cute!

and show w big eyes... im not sure which one u mean hhh. i like a lot of anime, my favs being ga (ofc), jibaku shounen hanako-kun, and fruits basket. im also really into the webtoon hooky, which is abt witches.

anyway mikan time:

ONE OF MY FAV CHARACTERS OF ALL TIME. i talk abt natsume all the time so it might feel like hes my all time fav, but he and mikan actually share that place in my heart. 

yes similarly i also felt she was annoying when i first watched the anime (i was twelve when i first got into it). at such a young age i had a tendency to get irritated with the female mcs in media (internalized misogyny, etc) and mikan was 1. loud 2. bold 3. stupid, which are naturally unforgivable traits for a character to have (sarcasm). when i rewatched/reread at 14 i realized that i was looking at her all wrong. around the time i started observing the ga tumblr fandom around age 15 (i only recently started being active in the ga fandom bc i was too nervous before), there was a pervasive idea that mikan was a mary sue.

UGH so let me go off real quick. i will talk way more abt mikan in my next nm essay, but ill summarize some of my ideas briefly for this. mikan’s arc is all about feeling useful, having agency, and how best to help others. she is maybe one of the few characters who undergoes OVERWHELMINGLY negative character development. i dont mean she was flanderized or ruined, i mean that this little girl started developing the idea that she should smile all the time and hide all her negative feelings in order to make OTHERS feel better. this is not good! but its treated like its good, like thats the best choice she can make (this is the actual reason that i only ship her romantically w natsume actually, but ill go into that in my essay). it can be fun for a character to devolve, to make the wrong choice, but this change wasnt treated that way.

another issue is i genuinely HATE mikan having the stealing alice. she should never have had the stealing alice. do i realize thats more than half the manga im talking about? YES. it completely upended her character arc. her nullification alice was so understated! she felt like it was useless and was SO insecure about it. then all of a sudden she has the stealing alice, which can be dangerous, but definitely cannot be called “useless” and her story about uselessness/having a “boring” alice just. falls short. yukas story w the stealing alice was so meaningful and impactful on its own. mikan ALMOST being the next yuka couldve been compelling if it didnt ruin the set-up that the entire first half of the manga was focusing on. 

anyway mikan is NOT a mary sue for the above reasons. she is not effortlessly perfect. many people in the manga call her plain. she can be really stupid. she doesnt always save the day. in fact, other people often have to save her, making her feel useless (which is why she shouldve saved natsume. they were each other’s key to resolving arcs and yet. and YET.) she can be loud, brash, bold, and often says the wrong things. she has a really apparent character arc and calling her a mary sue ignores all that. ppl who think mikan is a mary sue are my worst enemy and i will fist fight them.

now ill talk a little about mikan in fanfics bc i think its worth mentioning, especially since i filled out that square abt her being done dirty. like i said, mikan is stupid. im not insulting her. some people are stupid. shes not good at academics. shes a lot more sporty than she is brainy. she rushes to conclusions and doesnt always think things through. shes not really a rational person all the time. fanfics often treat this stupidity as a negative trait to be fixed. maybe shes stupid when shes little but she’ll be a genius when she gets older! look how smart she is now! instead of just letting her be dumb. she has other traits, like deep empathy, athleticism, passion, optimism, that are often sacrificed in fanfic in order to make room for her made up intelligence. 

mikan in fanfic (especially if shes supposed to be older) is often painted as more subdued than her loud manga counterpart, more often cynical, introverted, skeptical, etc., and ALWAYS pretty even if SHE doesnt see it (despite being described often as plain in the manga). i have some theories about this. 

1: western fans are more comfortable making mikan like a western mc than one more typical of anime. if u think abt what a typical western female lead looks like, she’s usually less feminine, “not like other girls,” a smart bookworm who is cynical and rational. this is familiar so i think a lot of western fanfic writers end up leaning mikan this way even at the cost of making her unrecognizable. so mikan being stupid and loud and optimistic are all traits to be fixed, bc theyre not as familiar in a lead role. 

2. fans want to have a mature mikan, and they think theres no way she can keep her childish traits, like stupidity, boldness, impulsiveness, and idealism, and NOT be a child. i find that ridiculous. why cant mikan be a giddy, happy, upbeat adult? why does she have to lose all the traits that make her mikan in order to demonstrate maturity? 

3. i might be off base with all of these, but this one... i feel the most strongly about. mikan is the main character. in a lot of stories, the reader is invited to relate to the main character, to project onto her. often, the main character is vague or universal BC imagining her as you is the whole point. fanfic (especially the older fanfic) turns mikan into that easily recognizable and relatable mc we can insert ourselves into. 

anyway i have a lot more thoughts on mikan, way more than i could ever say in one post (which is why im doing an essay series) but these are some basic thoughts i have. im sorry its so long.
