Onboard the Human/K'laxi starbase, Integration of the two sapient species is more commingled than at other starbases. Partly out of necessity due to the smaller size of the starbase - which was originally constructed by the K'laxi - and partly out of a genuine desire to learn to know their newest neighbors. Humans and K'laxi eat, work, play and relax together.

Mark is out for a jog along the outer arms of the starbase when he sees his friend Gimeli. He waves and while she waves back, her body language is expressing confusion. Mark slows down, and breathing heavily, jogs up to Gimeli.

"Hey Gimeli! What's up?"

"Hi Mark...nothing is up, particularly. I was just curious about what you were doing. This is the third time I saw you run by."

"Oh, I'm just going for a run. I get tired of running on the treadmills in the gym, and Gene's gym is running at 4 gees today." Mark grinned sheepishly. "That's too high, even for me."

"So, you're not running to or from anywhere?" Gimeli turns her head slightly, curious.

"Nah, just running to run. If I don't do it, I get out of shape and then I can't run so well. Doesn't take hardly any time at all before I can't run as well as I can when I keep up training."

"Wait. You have to keep moving, or else your fitness level goes down?"

"Yeah. Happens to everyone. If you don't to the exercises you can't improve!"

"That...doesn't happen to us." Gimeli says carefully. "The level of effort we can expend running, or climbing, or jumping or carrying things doesn't really change once we mature."

"No way, really?" Mark says, interested. "Yeah, if we go to the gym and lift progressively heavier things, or run progressively longer distances, we get better at it."

"So you become stronger, the more you use the muscles?"

"That's right!" Mark takes out his phone "See, look? I've been tracking my progress. Back when I got here, I could only run 2 kilometers, and then I'd be winded and need to stop. Now, 10 kilometers is a nice run, and if I push myself, I can do twice that.

"That's amazing. So you're stronger now than when you first got here?"

"Yeah, I'd say so. I think I also look better and I know I feel better. For most humans moving and exercising makes us feel good."

"If you're stronger now than before then..." Gimeli gets up out of her chair "prove it. Pick me up!"

"What?"

"You heard me." She says, her ear twitching "Pick me up."

"Uh, okay" Mark says, blushing slightly.

He puts his arms under her arms and lifts her up. It's not the heaviest thing he's lifted, but she weighs more than he expects. Out of pride though, he tries to hide how hard he's working.

"Wheee" Gimeli says, laughing "You did it! I didn't think you actually could! Okay then human!" She gestures ahead dramatically "That way! We're off to dinner, my treat! Yah!"

Laughing, Mark carries her in the indicated direction, excited at the evening ahead and secretly hoping she picks a restaurant that's not too far.

YES OKAY I was thinking about this a couple of different ways. jounouchi trying to get even would be up there. you screw him over? okay, but not his baby sister. he was in jail and couldn’t do anything for her! if everybody thinks he already committed murder, what’s another despicable crime? on the other hand, this is kaiba, so his second response could be “are you any good at playing a children’s card game”.

jounouchi begrudgingly taking a kaiba corps job because he really thought he could start over when he got out of jail. and kaiba watches how a guy who missed out on 15 years in the outside struggles to keep up with the tech and culture. he lost such a huge portion of his youth, so jounouchi struggles to connect with “normal” people. kaiba was never normal, so there’s a bond that develops against their wills.

Kaiba already thinks himself as being supremely generous to offer Jou a job. Jou has a criminal record here. By all criteria, he should be disqualified from working at KC ever.

Oooo I love the idea of them bonding over their outsider status. Jou is never going to be accepted in many parts of polite society because of his criminal past, and Kaiba just can't function outside of his particular narrow niche. Neither of them can blend in with the crowd even if they try. They stick out like sore thumbs. In some ways, it's an escalation of the dynamic we see for them in many fanworks, where Jou's not afraid or deferential to Kaiba and Kaiba doesn't pity Jou as someone more "normal" might, and they don't really have to mask around each other and get to know each other on a surprisingly meaningfully personal level.

On a sweeter level, I also really dig the possibility of Kaiba teaching Jou technology. He recognizes that Jou completely missing the ascent of smartphones and VR/AR tech is not Jou's fault. He's more patient with helping Jou get up to speed than you might guess from his usual demeanor. And now Kaiba has to deal with getting texts from Jou entirely in emojis that he must decipher like it's hieroglyphics and maybe then he rejects it a little.

Reading through the first volume, and it's wild how Yude with time actually got the swole level Suguru always imagined himself to be in the first chapters, within this new run.

I'm not the biggest fan of every character in the new run basically all having the same body type in some shots. But I'm immensely happy for Suguru finally getting that level of big the man dreamed he could do.

Think it, believe it, do it... And so he did!! Hoorah!!
