Returning the favor (my Writeblr is gottaenjoythelittlethingzz) and since I’m newly into the horror genre this year, I wanted to ask: what’s the inspiration for your invented name for your fictional monster/creature and does your fantasy WIP have other invented or non-traditional names of places/characters/events even that you enjoyed coming up with?

my inspiration for the name of my monster, the aytagor, came from some help on a discord server. someone from ukraine pointed out that in russian, "rogatya" is close to the word for "antlered." the beast has big massive antlers, and the alternate reality is completely backwards, so i made the word for the beast backwards too.

i believe the only other thing i've named non-traditionally is also the name of the only near-human they meet when they wind up in their alternate reality, and she is called "ayifos" which is backwards for "sofiya", a very common name in eastern europe. so that was my process!

STS: How do your characters say or express the sentiment, “I love you”? How about, “I hate you”? Not just to their partners/enemies, but in everyday situations or to strangers or in passing. (~ gottaenjoythelittlethingzz)

Lorelai sorta hates everyone. She snaps angrily at friendly strangers, ignores a ships crew, and threatens anyone who gets on her nerves or in her way with her magical ornate dagger. Or might just randomly hit you with some magic for a minor offence.

But if she loves you? Ironically, if she really cares about you, she’ll argue with you. She’ll argue with you about your safety, or conflicting values, or differing strongly held opinions. In these cases she just wants to help, or keep you safe, or just wants what she thinks is best for you. But, she is full of anger. So. Yeah.

Miles says I love you by doing everything he can to help. But hate? Then he does everything he can to stop you, because if Miles mr-selfless Carter hates you, you have done or are doing something terribly, terribly wrong to someone else.

Adrian doesn’t react to hate directly. At least not anymore. He’s not a huge fan of personal conflict. It went in the worst direction once, so now he restrains himself. He shows he loves people by spending quality time with them.

Morgan takes care of people she loves, and helps them out. “I care about you” is akin to “I love you”. If she hates someone, she is passive aggressive or cuts you out of her life entirely.

Returning the favor for OC Pride Fact Swap: Schuyler (bi, poly) grew up with a lot of rambunctious brothers. And she adopted a lot of their mannerisms. I’ve always known that she A) spits and B) whistles (loudly and in tune, as her father did). But I just learned today that she also uses her shirt as a towel (not caring about “exposing” her chest/bra in front of people) just as the boys do. It’s just a natural motion for her. Ughhhh I’m having a hard time with POVs :( I love me some 3rd person POV. One of my stories is in 1st Person POV and it’s gotten difficult. Would it be terrible if I switched POVs? Part of me also sees this as an opportunity to practice it and get better. But I don’t like it...heeeeelp!

Third person is certainly the easiest to write in, I believe across the board. Depending on how long your project is would writing the first draft in first person and the rest in third be an option?

Choosing a POV just like choosing a tense to write in drastically influences the type of story you are trying to tell. My main suggestion is you as the author need to decide which POV will make the most sense for the story and have the most impact on your readers.

After a quick survey on a writing Discord, it seems as though people have read creative and published works alike that change in between POVs once or multiple times. If you wished to go with this strategy, I would recommend only switching when changing chapters/large sections. Do not try to change mid scene of change multiple times in a single chapter. 

While using multiple POVs would certainly add depth to your piece and allow you to get the thoughts and motivations from multiple characters, it still important that the transition between POVs is clean and easy to follow. Make the readers think, but do not require a map for those who try to read your work. I’d actually encourage you to attempt writing in multiple POV in a single story because that would really challenge you. But it is entirely up to you how much you want to challenge yourself and how many different things you want to have experience with writing.

I absolutely understand your dilemma. I shelved a WIP shortly after joining the Writeblr community that was set in first person POV. I, too, wanted to stretch my writing muscles and try something new as I had only ever previously written in third. The first two chapters are some of my best writing to date. But the further I got into the story and the more characters I added the more I wished I was writing in third until I hit a roadblock and eventually stopped. Now the WIP you see me working on is written in present time third person POV and it’s a lot more in my comfort zone. I’m more willing and eager to work on it then the one I’ve shelved.

After hearing that others had indeed read stories that change between multiple POVs I think (should I ever return to that WIP) that I’ll keep the first two chapters as is and then switch into third for the remainder of the story. But, again, it is a decision left solely up to each individual writer. Whatever you do I hope it all works out and you are able to continue with your project because I know you were excited to start it and I would hate for you to feel discouraged in anyway. 

Remember. You’ve only just started. It’s merely the first draft or attempt at stepping into this world. Don’t give up on it before it has time to grow and mature.

“Don’t be worried about me.” A sigh, and then Erin finally tapped Zan’s hand to make him let go. He did so slowly, his fingers trailing down her sleeve reluctantly.

Zan retreated across the room, hesitating before returning to his room. “I will be, anyway,” he said, almost light enough to sound teasing, but the darkness of his eyes was shrouded in calculated concern. When Erin said nothing in response, he nodded with an annoyed grimace and turned the corner.

Erin stared at her empty cup for too many minutes. It was easy to be soft around Zan. Too easy.

“You can cry.” R’s voice sounded strange, like there was something preventing the words from coming out right.

Mark couldn’t know because he couldn’t see. “Crying hurts,” he managed to say in between halting breaths. “I don’t want to hurt.”

“None of us do, buddy.” R’s voice was soft now. Soft and sweet? Like when he talked to Cal. Or Nyks.

“Is his fever really bad? I’ve never seen him so, well, open before.” That was Cal’s voice, from higher up.

Mark didn’t like how worried it sounded. “I’m just tired,” he said.

“Why don’t you sleep some more? Or do you want to try and eat something? We’ve got soup that’ll help you heal up.” That was R, right? It was a little too deep to be Cal.

Why was R being so gentle? Mark didn’t understand. Didn’t they hate each other? No, wait. They were sort of neutral acquaintances now. Mark forgot when that happened.

“Why does he look scared?”

“When was the last time we had a civil conversation, just the two of us? Of course he’d be scared of me. Didn’t you see him flinch when I was trying to feel his temperature? Gods, this is so messed up. I messed him up. It’s no wonder he hates me. I messed up so bad.”

Mark was exhausted but he was hardwired to hear brokenness in people and R - indomitable, incorrigible, R - sounded so broken. He didn’t know what to say but he couldn’t bear to hear anymore.

“I don’t hate you.” Mark surprised himself, because until that point he hadn’t known how he felt about R, but looking at the wilting boy in front of him, Mark was sure of that one thing. “I don’t hate you.”
