I think that if I were required to spend the rest of my life on a desert island, and to listen to or play the music of any one composer during all that time, that composer would almost certainly be Bach.

Happy (almost) feast day of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the most remarkably unremarkable saint!

JOKE-OGRAPHY:
Also known as St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, she's another young female saint, but unlike some of the others I've done cartoons about, she didn't torture herself, fast herself to death, or get murdered for her beliefs. Apparently, Thérèse led a very normal life, though she died young of tuberculosis. She was an emotional little girl who was eventually inspired to join a convent, and while she was much younger than was normally allowed, her persistence got her accepted. Her dedication to showing love in the smallest details of everyday life has led some to say that she, more than many lofty theologians, rediscovered the Gospel, and in the simplest way.
For my birthday today I got this amazing book and cd collection from the 1981 recording sessions of Gould’s Goldbergs. It’s incredibly beautiful and full of insights to how the sessions went. They’ve pulled out quotes from the sessions to feature in these big full page photos. I love how self-deprecating he could be!
Gould's Jewelfront female by Michael W Potter
Via Flickr:
There are many elaborate names for hummingbird species, but Gould’s Jewelfront is one of the most intriguing. (The species is also known as Gould’s Brilliant, which is equally fascinating.) Jewelfront aptly describes the small but colourful forecrown (often more prominent on males), while Gould’s refers to famous English ornithologist John Gould (1804-1881), who wrote the first scientific account of the species. The female in this image (with a buff rather than dark chin as on males) was seen at a private sanctuary on the lower part of the renowned Manu Road in Peru.
JOKE-OGRAPHY:
In this Bible story, Jesus decides to stay at the house of the tax-collector, Zacchaeus, who has repented of his greedy ways. Some onlookers wonder why someone as holy as Jesus would stay at a sinner's house. In this cartoon, Jesus says that, if He couldn't stay with sinners, He'd have to live with His mom forever (because Catholics believe that Mary was sinless). He says this as if it would be a bad thing, so when He catches sight of His holy mother eavesdropping from behind a nearby house, He quickly amends His statement so He doesn't hurt her feelings.
AUTHOR'S NOTE:
This is yet ANOTHER Tomics Resurrection, where an old comic that has long suffered the cruelties of time is sent to the pasture to be... taken care of... while a new comic takes its place! Here's the old version for comparison:
100 years ago... LtCmdr Rupert Gould best selling book
100 years ago, Royal Navy LtCmdr Rupert Gould (1890-1948) published his famous book " The Marine Chronometer " (preface December 1922 - 1923) but we didn't have to wait a century for a worthy reprint as in 2013 the ACC Antique Collectors' Club brought out their 365 pages version... and again in 2016. A truly amazing book with extra chapter full of great color photographs as both reprints almost sold out immediately.
October 5th, 2023 will be the 75th anniversary of the passing of LtCmdr Rupert Gould, a Royal Navy officer who safed, cleaned and repaired John Harrison's Marine clocks, naming H1 to H5.
