So you just got diagnosed with inflammatory arthritis....
A guide to coping with inflammatory arthritis written by someone who has been living with it for years
1. Warmth helps with pain and stiffness
Take a hot bath or shower
Use a rice bag to heat your most stiff and painful joints - How to make a warm rice bag (no sew) How to make a warm rice bag (sew) Adorable heated stuffed animals
Heating pads can also be good for heating specific joints (I don't like either of the ones I've had so I'm not dropping a recommendation)
2. Compression helps with stiffness
Compression gloves work really well in particular - Really cool compression gloves
Compression for other joints works well too
3. NSAIDs help reduce inflammation in your joints
Topical diclofenac is my personal favorite, it works wonders
Meloxicam is only available by prescription but has fewer negative side effects than over the counter NSAIDs do
Ibuprofen and Aleve/Naproxen are both OTC NSAIDs
Here's a full list of NSAIDs
4. Steroids reduce inflammation but are usually only used for flares. If OTC remedies are not working for your arthritis it may be worth asking about steroids to manage flares
5. Use adaptive devices
Note that I haven't tried all of these!
In the kitchen - Jar opener, pull tab opener, arthritis friendly silverware, ergonomic knife, another ergonomic knife
In the bathroom - My favorite shower chair, long handle bath sponge, shower grab bar
Dressing - Many button and zipper aids, magnetic jewelry clasps, sock aid
Standing assists - Bed rail, couch stand assist, cane with stand assist
Office - Pencil grips, book stand, vertical mouse
Other - Arthritis friendly gardening tools, so many grips adapters and holders
.... and many many more
6. Use mobility aids - I'd strongly recommend talking to a doctor before deciding to use mobility aids. mobility aids cause damage to your body so it's important to weigh the pros and cons of using them. Anyways my personal recommendations:
Canes - NOVA T cane, Carex ergonomic offset cane
Crutches - Millennial In-Motion Forearm crutches
Other people with inflammatory arthritis are welcome to add on!

we can't find specific enough instructions on how to use a cane
some sources say to hold it in the hand opposite of the foot that hurts
other ones say to hold in in the hand on the side that hurts
and we can't match up our arm movement with our leg in a way that takes the pressure off
i feel like we're not in enough pain for a wheelchair and it would make our life 10000000000% more difficult which is Not what we need rn

< content warning > food, dieting, strict diet
went to the doctor yesterday to follow up for bloodwork result, again my uric acid level is high AND there’s inflammation marked by elevated HS-CRP (high sensitive c-reactive protein) level
so my doctor agreed it is highly likely gout, since by genetic predisposition, my dad has one. She suggested that I go for strict low purine diet first and to drink a lot of water to flush out the uric acid.
please please please send me some suggestions to make eating fun (and less intimidating, since I struggle with eating anyways)

I learnt about gout yesterday in the context of obesity and a high fructose diet.
Fructose doesn't have its own metabolic pathway and must be modified to fit the glycolytic pathway.
The first step of fructose metabolism is, like glucose, a phosphorylation step to keep it inside the cell. Unlike glucose, phosphorylated by glucokinase, fructose is phosphorylated by fructokinase and uses 1 molecule of ATP as the phosphate donor. ATP is converted from ADP to AMP, from AMP to IMP, and from IMP to uric acid, the precursor of uric acid crystals causing gout.
This is the first time I've had confirmation of my gnome/imp binary: that everything in the world can be categorised as either gnomic or impish. And gout is certainly impish.

There are more than 100 types of arthritis, affecting people of all ages, races, and genders.
While many different types of arthritis exist, these five forms seem to be the most prevalent: Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Lupus and Gout.
Personally, I have them all. 💙🥄

Many historical rulers suffered from chronic gout, likely caused by their rich diets. Anyone can get cranky with a chronic illness, but the impact can be far greater when you’re in charge of an army!

Not the way I would phrased it, but besides that, the paper is good.

hey does anyone know wtf you're supposed to do if the foods you're not supposed to eat conflict with each other
for gout you're not supposed to eat red meat, seafood, high purine vegetables, sugar
for gastroparesis you have to limit fiber such as raw fruits and vegetables, whole grain bread/pasta, meat with fat
but also you're a carnivorous nonhuman headmate and gag on a lot of vegetables if they aren't hidden in something
and low energy because of fibromyalgia so you can't cook anything complicated most days
am i just supposed to eat nothing but baked chicken nuggets and soggy microwave vegetables all the time

it never sits well with me how most local private practitioners market their service with “you’re in your 20s and already have arthritis / gout?”
thanks for informing me to avoid your clinic
