Please don't say the word goblin or other creatures that are obsessed with money, they're antisemitic (i know u didn't know don't worry)
I’m not an expert on folklore or Judaica, but I am a Jew who has taken some classes in European folklore, so I have a couple thoughts on this. “Goblin” is a generic term to refer to a lot of different mythical creatures, some of them mischievous, some of them friendly, some of them evil. Some goblins do share traits with antisemitic stereotypes (lookin’ at you, JKR ... and also a lot of modern RPGs), and sometimes that is intentional antisemitism on the part of the people telling the stories.
But the term is still very, very broad, and there are so many different types of creatures that are called “goblins” that they can’t all be said to represent an antisemitic stereotype.
Shakespeare’s Puck is a hobgoblin, for example, and this was a book I read as a kid and enjoyed:
Tumblr media
I would agree that we shouldn’t call other human beings “goblins” (because at the very least it seems pretty rude, if not potentially antisemitic?) but calling my mom’s dog a goblin because she reminds me of a funny little creature doesn’t strike me as problematic. I could be wrong here, but as someone who has read a lot of folklore, the term “goblin” could apply to almost as diverse an array of different creatures as the term “dragon,” and I would rather focus on critiquing goblin characters that use antisemitic tropes than removing the word “goblin” from the lexicon.

also sorry but if you feel the need to qualify your statements of support for jews/callouts of antisemitism by virtue signaling your antizionism. you're not being as helpful as you think you are.

Alright, fine, you know what? I do want to make a post to remind everyone of the antisemitic origins of “Halloween” style witches, actually. Here are two wonderful sources for you all to read. There is discussion of antisemitism and death so be cautious, but I would encourage you to learn where antisemitic biases come from. Quite honestly, it’s exhausting to constantly have to fight people over this shit. Here. I am handing these resources to you. Take it and learn. Please. The Antisemitic History of Witches
Witch Perspectives: Burning down the Old Standards
More reading on antisemitism in relation to witchcraft and the occult that I think are important: Aleister Crowley’s Antisemitism and Bigotry (Fair warning, his comments are absolutely disgusting and incredibly racist and antisemitic. Proceed with caution).  Source 1 Source 2 Source 3
Appropriation Of Jewish Mysticism
Blood Libel (there is mass death described in this. be careful)
I may add to this later. Feel free to send asks with additional sources. GOYIM CAN REBLOG BUT DO NOT CLOWN ON MY POST.

In the spirit of that gatekeep gaslight girlboss post that keeps going around I wanna say something controversial: we need to gatekeep judaism on tumblr more.
Full stop. Im so tired of seeing goyim say things like "im in the middle of the conversion process so I experience antisemitism" but they haven't even spoken to a rabbi yet or read jewish lit that wasn't in a text post. Like there really are goyim on this site who believe reading and reblogging a few posts about jewish beliefs makes them part of the religion. I truly believe speaking with a rabbi is the bare minimum someone can do before being considered a convert and jewish.
I think people forget that judaism is, for the most part, a closed religion and that interacting exclusively with an online community is not the same as actually being in the irl community
I'm personally very weirded out by people who convert or plan to convert to judaism but only seem to do so to talk about it online. If you are not going to interact with the community outside of reblogging about anti semitism, pretty quotes, and aesthetic boards why are you planning on converting?
Having a judaism tag is Not a substitute for actually practicing judaism.
To those who haven't been able to interact with their community because of covid/ location or have taken actual steps of the conversion process: this is not about you. I love you.
To those considering converting: it is a serious issue to convert. Please approach it with respect. Please do so for the right reasons. When it comes to discussions and shared experiences about anti semitism please do not speak over those already speaking or derail those discussions to be about you.
To the person who said they wanna convert but still mainly worship pagan gods: 1. you are a clown. 2. your parents aren't committing an anti semitic hate crime by making you be a part of family Christmas celebrations.
Goyim can reblog but don't clown
Other jews you can obviously reblog and add commentary id love to hear all your opinions

i’m gonna be glib in this post for comedy’s sake but i’ve seen enough around tumblr and social media in general to think that this needs to be said, so i’m saying it: your character probably shouldn’t be ‘practicing’ kabbalah.
your character probably shouldn’t have anything to do with kabbalah. and this isn’t a matter of ‘just research it and be respectful, if you read enough and you’re mindful you’ll be good to go’ - because you can’t research it respectfully. judaism is a closed culture, and while i’m all for the push to write jewish characters, simply throwing kabbalah in tells me that more research needs to be done. because you, as the writer, should probably not be accessing the zohar or other writings, since these are meant to be read after decades of torah study for proper context. and i don’t wanna get into age limitations on access to religious texts on the wide open internet because that’s a conversation for the jewish community, but to be clear i don’t want anyone coming onto this post with ‘there have been young kabbalists!’ because yes but that’s not anyone’s business outside of young jews talking to their rabbis about their formal religious studies.
because kabbalah is religious. i haven’t read the texts because i’m not a middle aged torah scholar, but even a general understanding from living as a jewish person and having these conversations has taught me that kabbalah is a way of understanding g-d and performing mitzvot. it is not ‘witchcraft’, and if you want to classify it as ‘mysticism’, it’s absolutely not in any sort of h*rry p*tt*r sense of the word. if the people who actively study and practice it view it as ‘magic’, that’s their call to make. but kabbalah is not a book of jewish spells, and i’ve seen a lot of gentile witches appropriating it, believing it to be such, and that is flying awfully close to the blood libel sun. it reads to me as the 'positive’ and faux-supportive version of, ‘jews have secret ancient magic that they do in their basements,’ with the end goal being appropriation instead of extermination. and it’s hard to talk about this without speaking for all jews, in the way it’s hard to talk about anything jewish online without becoming a mouthpiece that erases a rainbow of jewish experiences, but for goyim at least maybe the Secret Ancient Jewish Magic angle is not a good one. and it may scare a lot of atheists or people who think ‘abrahamic’ ( help! ) monotheism is Icky but those texts are... to bring you closer to... g-d. to live in a more g-dly way. and the blurry line between secular and sacred judaism is, again, not a conversation that gentiles need to be taking part in.
but since i have yet to see a middle aged jewish rper writing a deeply religiously jewish character - aka someone who would want to seek out kabbalah beyond doing it for the Secular Online Witchcraft Aesthetic of it all, which is especially not a good look if you’re a non-jew writing a jewish person - and have definitely not seen someone writing an actively practicing jew over forty - the age you technically need to be to study kabbalah - there’s really no excuse for incorporating it at all.
tl;dr: kabbalah isn’t witchcraft, the culture is closed, you more likely than not cannot actively portray what kabbalah is without reading material you do not have the appropriate respectful context for, and if you are an older adult torah scholar in the tumblr rpc ( maybe there’s One out there ) then you probably already know that that’s not something you should be sharing online for aesthetic writey blog. if you’re jewish and wanna argue with me 1) argue with your rabbi first 😤 ( joke but i do dare you ) and 2) you can inbox / dm me bc i’m not having religious conversations in the open this is a and b jew talk and gentiles can c themselves out. you may reblog but please don’t clown.

please spare more jewish declan content pl eas e i am begging......
why thank you! what i have to say about declan is i think he’s jewish and i think i’ve thought that subliminally for a long time? as far as HC’s go this is one that’s like, HIGHLy personal in some of the practicalities of that with his family would mean so i won’t go there! but anyway goes without saying goyim don’t clown on the following. - OK to reblog tho! it’s just that if you give me any flack about him being cath0l1c in canon i will smite ye
- i think he’s somewhere along the lines of Conservative/Masorti.
- he spent a lot of time as a child learning Sean-nós style singing for competitions (i think that’s what the irish singing competitions were but who the fuck knows), and because that meant memorising long passages in Irish to be performed without musical accompaniement, it made learning Hebrew songs and melodies before he really understands Hebrew much, much easier. he’s also really, really good at leyning/cantillating torah.
- Declanisms, but. Yinglish.  I do think he says schlep a lot. nothing in canon can take this away. It’s his ideal verb for what he’s always doing.
- He runs a pretty sharply kosher kitchen. that was morningstar fake-on he was making the fry up for matthew with i saw it with my own eyes. I think he’s just a vegetarian to make things easier. But he DOEs check his phone a lot during shabbat to make sure nothing terrible and life altering has happened.
- can’t decide if he has about ten bubbies after him at the kiddush table telling him about their granddaughters or none at all.
- the master of firm post-shabbat service handshake
- ALSO the master of the Jewish FUnny Story.
- he went for the most normie blue and white tallit + matching kippah design and we all know it
- very concerned at times about Ayin Hara and lashon hara, except when he’s absolutely not. But very worried about those kinds of things when it comes to Matthew.
- Really loves the specific rituals of everyday life and the holidays and patterns of marking time over the longer reach of a year. Favorite of the major holidays is Pesach but he also really like Sukkot. He’s like oh i can do the whole night of torah study on one cup of coffee. maybe none at all, no problem, and sure enough he DOEs and everyone’s like ok, love that guy but WTF. he does need to down like half a bottle of his antacids to eat the cheesecake tho.
- Also still working in the long term on his issues and trusting others but secretly loves being on a whatsapp group for the minyan with other people who don’t necessarily have to know everything about him or be his family to appreciate his presence
- Meets with Ronan and Matthew to light the candle for Niall and Aurora’s yahtzeit, because he’s learning there are the things you do for the living rather than the dead. also navigating a healthier relationship with ronan when it comes to their father’s memory, and that his own rage and anger over is real and valid, and he does not have to have uncomplicated love for his mother and can be angry at her. but he can make her Special Sunday Pav recipe and have it be his now, because that’s about the best KFP desert ever made
anyway that’s what i have for now! apologies this was quite clouded with emotion and doesn’t feel quite declan-y enough for how i feel about this reading of this character BUT i’m sure there will be more later!
