#I need his opinion on some things #mainly the timeline of my graduation and thesis completion #and also if he’ll support my petition for deadline extensions and what to do if I fail my incompletes #fingers crossed because im irrationally scared he’s going to be mad/irritated/exasperated with me #I have to tell him yet again that my health is so bad I still can’t get any work done and meet my deadlines #and I have to ask if what I have left needs to be in person because I’m about to move across the country #because I need surgery and I currently cannot take care of myself #grrrrrr ya know #anyway wish me luck #grad adventures

Some time ago you posted one of your "academic spinster aunt" posts about grad school, which said that grad school shouldn't be unrelieved pain, and that if it's just painful and not also fun, there's an issue. (I paraphrase. This was several months back, and I'm having trouble finding the exact post.) Anyway, reading your post was a turning point for me; it was the last straw to push me from "maybe I'm just whiny and lazy and not smart enough for a graduate degree" to "no, I'm genuinely in a bad academic setting," and gave me the courage to change that. I transferred schools and now have an advisor who treats me like I matter and classmates who invite me to do stuff. It's great and I'm actually enjoying my field again. Thank you so much!

Oh, I'm so glad that you found the post helpful -- and of course still more glad that you have found a supportive and collegial academic home. Thanks for letting me know!

okay first of all Wild that ppl here know that I'm a grad student?? like okay yes I post about it sometimes but. ppl are paying attention?? who I'm assuming aren't my mutuals bc anon?? Wild

anyway! I haven't actually started my thesis yet, I've got about another semester before I get to it properly. I do have an idea on what I'm going to do it on... I think... maybe... At the very least I've gotten involved to a degree with an ongoing research project my advisor is part of, so I'll be able to either attach my research to that or possibly use some of the data they've already collected.

as for me... this semester my advisor convinced me to take a PhD level course that she's teaching (I'm a masters student) and that was A Mistake. like, it's been interesting and I've met some cool people and definitely learned some stuff but also A Mistake. the imposter syndrome continues to be intense, but I have it on good authority (my professor) that's just what academia is like, so. though she is also trying to convince all of us to have less imposter syndrome which. good luck. also there's only like, a month left in the semester so finals are looming and mostly I just want to curl up and hibernate until spring gets here. the end of October got really busy and I pushed through but now the burnout has set in bad.

I guess the takeaway is like... don't do grad school as an unmedicated neurodivergent. like you can, but also don't.
