This week is the final week of school for my Occupational Therapy program.
This has honestly been the biggest whirlwind adventure of my life. It blows my mind that I am almost done. I love the profession that I have chosen and would not trade it for the world.
I still have to take my boards, but who knows when that will be due to the COVID-19 pandemic. What I DO know is that I have worked very hard for the moment that I get to call myself an OTR/L and I will be very thankful when that happens.
I am so ready to start helping people, and to start the rest of my life.

Relations...
So, I am trying to figure out relationships in general, but it seems to get really complicated when adding grad school to the top of it.
I'm in the process of navigating feelings for someone in my day to day. But at the same time, I wonder, if not this person, then who? I am glued to the same other 21 people for the next two years of my life. And when I'm not at school, I am still doing school work at home. My opportunity to meet and mingle with other people has decreased. But my interest for a relationship, and my desire to connect romantically has become so important to me. How do I make time for this, when I feel like school is dominating my life?

Level 1 Fieldwork
I went on my first level 1 fieldwork this week, and it was absolutely amazing. Everything that we have gone over in class up to this point, I was able to see at my first placement.
My fieldwork is at a PACE center. It’s a special type of medical model that provides a program of all inclusive care for the elderly. It’s advertised as a one stop shop. If qualified, participants can take part in the day center program where they participate in daily occupation based activities, socialize with others, and receive health-based services. Some participants also have their homes assessed annual to ensure that the environment they are living in is safe, and beneficial for their highest level of functioning and independence. The center also provides basic care needs such as doctor’s appointments, and annual check-ups. The intent is truly beautiful, and I feel like I saw so much on my first day! I cannot wait to go back. I would love to see a set up like this based more in family practice or pediatrics.
Now time for an endless weekend of studying for a final, writing papers, and maintaining my reading schedule!
Til next time

A Space To Call Your Own
Graduate school is no joke. There is a lot more reading, writing, research, and in general a lot more content to grapple with. When I first got to school, I knew that in order to be successful, I had to find a space where I could get things done. Know what I mean? My new apartment is cute and cozy, and usually I try to study either in my living room or bedroom, but that can lead to distractions. And according to my “Human Capacities” professor, the bedroom is not for studying. It’s for sleep and sex, period. So where do I go from there?
The first week of class was all about settling down into a new place, new routine, and new occupations. But it was also really important that I find the perfect study spot. Thankfully, I had some friends who have been living in this area for a while, and they gave me a list of places to check out. The cute cafe pictured above was the first place on the list, but the moment I stepped foot onto its gravel path, I knew it was the place for me. The atmosphere was just right, there was the perfect amount of background noise, and a variety of options for seating inside and outside (perfect for changing weather conditions). In this little town that I currently reside in, there are lots of places like this, but when you know, you just know. I lugged my textbooks and notes to the little cafe one carefree Friday morning with a burdened mind. “Man I have so much work to do! Am I ever going to finish these tedious readings about the anatomy of the brain?” But the moment I took the first sip of my mocha latte and heard the playful conversations rummaging around me, I knew I had found my spot.
To be fair, I tried out the other places on my list, but my heart had already found a home. And now every weekend, I enthusiastically pack up my backpack and head to my favorite spot in town. I guess I said all that to say this, take the time to find your place. Studying doesn’t have to be a chore. Find an environment that makes you happy, one that helps you thrive, and then get to work!
