photopea gif tutorial!
i recently started learning the craft of gifmaking with the free software photopea. when i first started, i had to piece together several different tutorials as well as extrapolate from some photoshop tutorials because-- no one uses photopea.
but they should! it's free! it can run in your browser! it can do most everything photoshop can do and you don't have to deal with adobe or torrenting. so i'm making a tutorial of my photopea gifmaking process because that's what i needed a couple months ago, and i hope it can be of use to some others. let's go!
1: PREPARING
source the scene you want to gif. it's best to download your video when you can, but screen recording can work in a pinch. this is the video downloader software i use.
once the source video is downloaded, i like to pick out the specific moments i'm going to gif and save them as their own files-- this makes future steps easier. an individual gif shouldn't be more than 4ish seconds, so limit your selections to about that. name your files in a way that makes sense to you:
Tumblr media
2: CONVERTING TO .JPG
i like to convert my video clips to .jpg format. it is possible to load video clips directly into photopea, but unless it is a very short <30fps clip, it is likely to freeze or crash in my experience. i use this website as it downloads a higher framerate (~25fps) than others i've used.
Tumblr media
convert your video files and download the .zip folder containing your frames. make sure to unzip them and name them something helpful if you need to.
3: OPENING YOUR FRAMES IN PHOTOPEA
photopea looks like this when you open it:
Tumblr media
select "open from computer" and select only the first frame of your first gif:
Tumblr media
your environment should look like this (ignore the other projects i have open, you should just have 0001.psd or similar):
Tumblr media
go to file> open and place, and select ALL of the rest of the frames from your first clip:
Tumblr media
they'll load in one by one, and your environment should look like this:
Tumblr media
notice how all the frames have a little square in the corner? that means they are smart objects, and we need them to not be for our purposes. select all of your frames, right click, and choose rasterize:
Tumblr media
in order to make the series of jpgs move as a gif upon download, select all of your frames and go to layer> animation> make frames:
Tumblr media
all your layer names should now start with _a_. you can really do this at any point in the process so it's not a big deal if you forget at the beginning.
finally, you want to limit the frames in individual gifs to around 50 or less. if you find you have more, delete some frames off of the beginning or end by right clicking and selecting delete.
4: CROPPING AND RESIZING
select the crop tool on the left hand panel:
Tumblr media
at the top bar, select fixed size:
Tumblr media
gifs on tumblr are limited to 540px wide for single column gifs, 268px for two columns, and 178px for three columns. the height is up to you; i like to use 350px height with the 540px width.
enter your values into the W and H fields and do not press enter yet. drag the cropped area to where you want it to be-- try to line up the top and bottom edges so as not to lose too much of your image. once you're satisfied with the selection, press enter. your gif is now cropped and resized to tumblr standards.
5: SHARPENING
(if you are working with low-qual video, check out this tutorial by @hellboys before sharpening. basically filter> filter gallery > grain, select soft and play with the settings. then proceed!)
still making sure all of your layers are selected, navigate to filter> sharpen > smart sharpen:
Tumblr media
you should see this dialog box:
Tumblr media
these are the settings i like to use, but you can play around to see what you like. here's the before and after of my sharpening settings:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the difference will be more noticeable once we complete the next step-- brightening and coloring.
6: BRIGHTENING & COLORING
navigate to layer > new adjustment layer:
Tumblr media
at any time, you can edit your adjustment layers by clicking this button in the right hand panel:
Tumblr media
for each edit you make to your gif, you will add a new adjustment layer. always make sure they're at the top of your layer stack. i like to start with adjusting the brightness and exposure, which are both pretty straightforward.
additionally ,you can select a curves adjustment layer, choose the RGB channel, and drag the curve just slightly upwards to further brighten your gif, like so:
Tumblr media
here's a before and after:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now for coloring-- i mostly use the saturation/vibrance, curves, color balance, and selective color adjustment layers. just play around with all of these until you find a style you like. i like my gifs to look really bright and colorful, so i push the saturation and try to draw out warmer tones in the color balance:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7: CAPTIONS
the font i like to use for captions is arial bold italic. you can download it (or any font of your choosing) from pretty much any free font website. if you choose to download a font not in photopea, go to file> open and select your font; it will now show up in the list of fonts.
navigate to the text button in the left hand panel:
Tumblr media
and type in the captions for your gif. i make the font size 20 for 540px gifs.
next, while only your text layer is selected, navigate to layer> layer style > blending options:
Tumblr media
click on drop shadow, and play around with the settings until you get something you like. here's mine:
Tumblr media
next, click on stroke and do the same thing:
Tumblr media
when you're done, make sure your text is your top-most layer.
8: EXPORTING
you're done! head to file> export as> GIF. you'll be prompted with a dialog that looks like this, with your gif playing (you can also do these steps without saving if you want a preview of your gif during editing):
Tumblr media
the only thing you should need to adjust is speed. this is the main difference between photopea and photoshop. the only way to specifically adjust the delay in photopea is to manually enter "_05" (or whatever amount of delay) at the end of every layer name. if you're like me you'll agree that is simply too much and settle for the speed slider.
i don't really know what logic governs the speed slider. it doesn't seem to be consistent across gifs, so play with it until it looks right. i've had it on 200% lately which seems insane but looks visually normal.
once the speed is adjusted, hit save and you're done! here's a final before and after of all the work:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
BONUS: SAVING .PSD PRESETS
did you think manually creating and editing all those adjustment layers was a lot of work? here's how to streamline it for next time.
at the very bottom of your screen, below your layers, select the icon that looks like a folder (third from the right).
it will create another layer called folder 1. drag your adjustment layers into this folder, making sure they stay in the same order. your layers should look like this when you're done:
Tumblr media
ONLY ONCE YOU HAVE SAVED YOUR GIF, delete all other layers that are not in the folder. then select file> save as PSD. save it somewhere convenient.
next time you're making gifs, after you've cropped and sharpened your frames, select file > open and choose your .psd file. it will open as another project. select the layer that says folder 1, and drag it to whatever project you're working on at the top bar. voila! your adjustment layers are applied to your new gif!
i still like to play with the settings, as coloring and brightness needs will differ from gif to gif.
thanks for reading! here's the gifset i made while making this tutorial :-)

hi alie, please could you tell me how you made the lens flare and film grain effect on your recent rwrb fonts gifset? it looks so beautiful! i'm working on my very first gifset with blending and overlays and things, and i'd like to try my hand at learning some more new stuff 💛
hiiii! thank you!! <3
i've found these overlays on youtube over the years, i don't remember exactly which videos they were, but if you look up "film strip overlay", "kodak overlay", "film grain overlay", etc for the film one, you should find something that you like. same goes for the light streak one: if you search for something like "light streak overlay", you'll get a bunch of nice one. then i download them via a website (i often use y2mate) and make a gif with screencaps from the dowloaded video(s) like i would any other gif.
once you have your overlay(s) ready to go as a smart object, duplicate it onto your gif, on top of everything (or under the typography layers), but definitely on top of coloring and blending, etc. put the overlay layer in a group, and if you have more than one overlay, put each overlay in its own group.
if the overlay is mostly black with some white specs/other colors, set that group's blending mode to screen (or lighten if it looks better). this will make everything that is black in the overlay transparent. and if the overlay is mostly white with some black, you can use the multiply (or darken) blending mode (it will make everything that is white transparent).
the reason why i prefer putting the overlay in a group and change the group's blending mode, instead of the overlay itself, is because it's easier to change its color that way if you wish. to change its color, i use a gradient map layer. the colors should be black to whatever color you want, and this layer should go into the overlay group, and n top of the overlay layer.
for my gifs in this rwrb set, there was also actually an animated grainy overlay below these two overlays. i've uploaded it here as a psd if you want, since it's pretty light. i put that layer in its own group and changed the blending mode to hard light and the opacity to 10%. i only used a gradient map to change the color on the color steak one to make it more of a pastel orange color, the two other overlays are as is without any color correcting layers.
Tumblr media
i hope that was clear enough :)

hello everyone (੭*ˊᵕˋ)੭* ̀ˋ i’m back with another coloring tutorial to share some tips on how i personally color mangas! you can check out my first tutorial here where i go over the basics of coloring. in here i’ll go a little more in depth about shading and lighting, and the areas that i like to focus!
so without further ado here we go !! ♡
before we start
all of my colorings are done in photoshop
i have a psd that i personally made for my colorings, so the tutorial will already have the psd on top. i personally like to color with a psd on and then make adjustments as i go along.
these are tips on how i personally like to color. the process is different for everyone, so take it with a grain of salt ^^
#1 - Base Colors
self explanatory, just fill in the base color of your character
Tumblr media
ooo la la
#2 - Tips for Shading
my shading is broken up into two major parts
1. soft shading
2. hard shading
Soft shading
i like to do soft shading whenever i want my coloring to look slightly more realistic and for the base color to look less flat. other times i skip it altogether if i’m coloring something cute or chibi-like. If you’re like me who has difficulty sometimes imagining where the shadows/light should be, i highly suggest looking at references to get a general idea! here is just one example.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
❗reminder that each step requires new layers! color everything on different layers so you can make changes in the future if you need to!! ❗
Hard shading
next, I like to add hard shadows to my colorings for more details. these are the shadows where i don’t blend into the skin. the areas where i almost always focus are
Under the hair
Neck
Ears
Under the eyebrows
but again, the hard shadows can also heavily depend on the angle that the character is in. like always, if you struggle with that, references will be your best friend!! i’ll show you a reference that i used for this coloring! :)
Tumblr media
Tip: set your shading layer to multiply and then adjust the opacity to your liking. mine is set to 80% here
#3 - Tips for Blush
not everyone includes blushes in their colorings, but i personally like to add it because i feel like it adds a lot of life to the characters (and i find it cute 🥰)
Tumblr media
#4 - Lighting/Color Details
another tip to make your coloring stand out is to add lighting! this is one of my favorite process as i really enjoy experimenting with different colors and seeing which one works best. you can use as much layers as you want until you get a result that you’re satisfied with.
Tumblr media
here is my result after i add more colors to the shadows and Aki’s face. i also colored in the eyes and added some pale colors to his lips because i know aki uses his chapstick 👑💅💁‍♀️
Tumblr media
#5 - Brightening the Line Art
right now, the lines that we have are black, but i would prefer to brighten it up a little more. here, i will set a new layer above my manga cap, and choose a red or orange shade to add some colors to it
Tumblr media
if you want a more vibrant effect, use a more vibrant version of those colors, or vice versa. you can also adjust the colors using your selective coloring tool
Tumblr media
#6 - Finishing Touches
now that i’m nearing the finished product, i will begin to add some final details to it. are there areas that should be brighter or colors that should be less saturated? are there any areas where i should add highlights to? here is where i fix minor things until i’m satisfied with the outcome. i will also adjust my psd as well if i need to!
Tumblr media
and finally, here is my result! :)

hey! i love the way you express ypur art! i’ve been so out of touch w drawing lately (been a decade tbh) and have not tried going digital. any tips for beginners?
hey there!
this got a little long, so i'll put my words under the cut. also, please take my advice with a grain of salt, as i myself am still grappling with digital art after a lifetime of traditional mediums:
in terms of being out of touch with drawing, there's unfortunately only one solution, which is just to struggle and practice. it's up to you if you want to immediately start practicing digitally (this will help familiarize yourself with digital art also) or traditionally. basic rendering, confident lines, color theory etc can be learned through a digital medium as well as a traditional one. that said, you can still ease yourself into familiar territory traditionally and then move on if that makes you more comfortable.
find inspiration for yourself, either from life or from other artists. it's alright to be a little listless and "unoriginal" in the beginning, it's sorta like learning a language and only knowing copy-paste pleasantries before you can be a fluent conversationalist.
in terms of tackling digital painting:
the main thing, i'd say, is not to be intimidated by any skill-based problems (which is a tough request i'm aware). digital art is really cool because it's accessible and it often makes the difficulties of traditional art much easier to deal with, and mistakes are not permanent. you can start a new canvas and erase strokes completely, save files and your whole process through a .psd — if anything, digital art is only intimidating because of how limitless it is. the program will seem unfamiliar at first but slowly you'll be completely fluent.
at the end of the day, digital art is just another medium. just like how it takes time to adjust and adapt to new traditional mediums, the same goes for digital. your skill and artistic voice is expressed through that medium, and finding your voice + how you wish to express it is a process that takes time. have fun, don't get too frustrated, set realistic standards for yourself!
please do keep me updated, and best of luck <3 thank you for sending in an ask, and i hope i managed to help somewhat.

follow up to this post; these tutorials are intended to help those who buy/use my psds , so that they may end up with the best possible results, as i'm no expert in editing by all means — and in saying so , like to make sure what i do put out will be fairly easy/convenient to use ( with as minimal adjustments as possible ! ) in this tutorial , i'll be showing you how i personally use minor adjustments to balance out shadows/blacks and fix ' deep fry ' coloring.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED: photopea and your desired your base image(in this example, i will be using a screencap from the series riverdale). [ screencap credit here. ] DISCLAIMER: not all lighting/images are the same, nor are psd colorings. you may need to use more or less of these adjustments with specific images/lighting. this is just a general idea, you will have to explore as you see fit. it's all going to depend on your personal taste !
by the end of this tutorial, your results should go from something like this...
Tumblr media
to this! much less of an eyesore.
Tumblr media
starting with example one(middle image/psd applied) / i'm going to apply a clipping mask(this way if you make any mistakes, it won't effect your base image and you can easily delete the error). / in the second example, i've made a video to show you how balancing adjustments out may look in real time. beginning with example one:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
once you've applied your psd of choice, go to layer tab > new adjustment layer > hue/saturation. (the three yellow highlighted tabs)
Tumblr media
this should instigate a pop up(circled in red) and add a layer above the image layer you're working with(it will say Hue/Saturation 1)
Tumblr media
now, you're going to right click the Hue/Saturation tab, and you should be greeted with a dropdown option; click the 'clipping mask' option.
Tumblr media
now the hue/saturation layer should be a clipping mask, and should look like the image below; the arrow indicates that it will work for the layer below the newly added adjustment. now, we can move on to the actual adjustments that will be applied within that clipping mask.
Tumblr media
as previously mentioned, we want to focus on the base image colors(before the psd was applied); with that being said, the colors we want to balance out are magentas/blue/red, that it will match the cyan color. you can now go to the dropdown where it says 'range'(highlighted in yellow). i'm going to adjust magenta first, since its the primary color of this lighting.
Tumblr media
and now, you may adjust the hue, saturation and lightness toggles as you see fit or until you feel like it matches, or is just generally less of an eyesore. in this case i did magenta > hue(-49); after that, i moved onto red > (hue-130) > (saturation7) > (lightness26) [ ... ] see how only adjusting the magenta left in the red highlight until we chose to edit it out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
our end result for example one. now onto the example two video.
this next example(psd applied) will be a little different but ultimately the same method. instead of hue/saturation, im going to layer tab > new adjustment layer > selective color, that i may focus on shadows/blacks as well, since the psd made them a bit lighter than i'd prefer. (note: this also comes in handy if you have grain applied to an image and feel it makes it to light!)
using these two methods are my primary saving grace for inconsistent lighting, fried images or oversaturation. i hope you find this useful!

what sharpening setting do you use? your gjfs are soo beautiful
— hey! thank you <3 i've tried to include a range of different sharpening settings for different videos (although there isn't a massive difference) and i've also linked some actions below :D
Tumblr media
i use this one above for just about every video that i can apply it to (but most noticeably i use this sharpening on television shows and films and other 4k videos!) i actually got this sharpening from @kamalaskhans and you can find her post here 💙
Tumblr media
sometimes shows can have details that are all really sharpened such as facial hair which can be a pain to sharpen (because you don't want to overdo it!) and luckily @sunflower-hae was the one to tell me about adding an extra gaussian blur layer on top (and often lowering the opacity of the gaussian layer to about 60-70%) <3
Tumblr media
i've never really found this an issue with films/shows but a lot of kpop 4k videos still have irritating dither in the background, no matter what sharpening you use so i love adding noise onto the gif so the grain looks vaguely natural 💀
Tumblr media
for just about every other video (such as short kpop videos like behind the scenes or interviews or 1080hd videos) i don't want to overdo the sharpening so i just use the above settings (and i'll add 1px noise if needed)
ACTIONS that i like!
glowy sharpening by @loveyazy sharpening actions by @throwing-psds gif action pack by @anyataylorjoy topaz-imitating action by @strifesource [i use this one a lot for stage gifs!]

I love all your edits!
Do you have any favorite psds that you are willing to share? Or tips on how to make gif colorings looks as nice as yours? 🥹
Hi, anon! Thank you so much! I am really happy that you love my edits. I really appreciate it! (°◡°♡)
To answer your question, I only use one PSD file nowadays for all the edits I make so sharing this one PSD I got for myself would be a bit uncomfortable. I hope you understand. Hehe. ( ̄▽ ̄*)ゞ
But no worries, because I thought of sharing LUT files that you can use as a basis for your color grading. I will only share one LUT file for this post but I might try sharing other LUT files as well in the future. In that way, you can achieve coloring with your own style. I will also be sharing which adjustment layers I use and what are the typical settings I apply.
SOME REMINDERS THOUGH:
I use PS 2021 but all adjustment layers are also available on older versions.
I AM NOT A PS EXPERT. I learned to use PS by reading/watching tutorials. All the things I will include in this post are just my preferences for my coloring. Take anything I said with a grain of salt.
I applied and tested my coloring on anime edits only. You may use it for real-life GIFs/photos but you may want to reduce the opacity or use a different blending mode to make it work.
My coloring deviates a lot from the original coloring most of the time. Some people may find my coloring weird so always keep in mind that this is not the best coloring practice.
ALSO WARNING: BAD ENGLISH AND LENGTHY EXPLANATIONS XD
To start, you may download the LUT file HERE.
This file is basically a compilation of adjustment layers that you may want to apply to other images. So when you use it again on another project, you can simply load this single file instead of the multiple adjustment layers. The disadvantage of using LUT file is that there's no room for further adjustments of the colorings within that file. In my case, I used it as an advantage. You may call it my secret recipe for my coloring. LOL. You can use it but there's a limit to the modifications. Anyways, this LUT file contains multiple layers which is a product of my trials and errors for the past few years since I started editing again.
You may consider using this LUT file as your training wheels. Once you understand further the complexities of the adjustment layers, you may no longer rely on this coloring file. I also did this when I started wanting to develop my own coloring style. And once I understood the basics of the adjustment layers and how to replicate the colors that I had in mind, I got rid of the LUT files and started making my own.
Now, let's use this image for coloring sample:
Tumblr media
You can also download the image so you can follow my steps easily. This version is already sharpened.
So when I apply the LUT file for this image, this is how it's going to appear.
Tumblr media
This color grading has the teal & orange effect. Of course, this is not the final output. This will be the backbone of our coloring as we add more adjustment layers. In my case, I always start with cyan and orange and then make the necessary changes depending on the series and the atmosphere of the image used.
But before we proceed with the adjustment layers, I want to emphasize two things you can explore when it comes to adding adjustment layers. Being aware of these two features of PS actually expands your coloring options exponentially [don't get fooled, I may sound like an expert but this is just really based on my personal experience. XD] Anyways, below are the two:
Opacity - It doesn't have to be black and white when it comes to coloring. You may choose the grey side. If you think the adjustment layer you are trying to add is causing an unpleasant effect on your image, maybe try to lower the opacity first and see if that will help.
Blend Modes - you may want to explore blend modes other than the Normal mode. If you are not used to changing the blend modes, you can check videos posted by Unmesh Dinda on his YouTube Channel. He explains really well when it comes to Photoshop features. I learned a lot from his tutorials and I am now applying these learnings to my current coloring style. You may check this video for starters. He has other videos about blending modes, too.
ADDING ADJUSTMENT LAYERS:
Levels Adjustment Layer - this is always my first adjustment layer but I also modify this in the last part. There are presets available but I am not utilizing those. Instead, I go to Auto Options. This feature is very helpful in heavily dark or bright scenes. Depending on what color correction you used, you may have extremely varying results.
Tumblr media
Once you click Auto Options, another dialogue box will appear:
Tumblr media
The default option is Enhance Brightness and Contrast. We will choose that option for now then click OK. [We will go back to this layer once we are done with the other layers.]
Tumblr media
Color Lookup Adjustment Layer - this is where the LUT file comes in. Once you add the layer, click Load 3D LUT then click Load 3D LUT again on top.
Select the LUT file I shared.
Tumblr media
Selective Color Adjustment Layer - for this layer, I always separate my adjustments for different colors and don't do the adjustments for all colors in one layer.
First Selective Color - I will rename the layer as RED and set the following values: CYAN: -100, MAGENTA: -11, YELLOW: -32, BLACK: 15
You can explore the levels of Magenta and Yellow but ultimately, I always set Cyan to -100 and Black is +15. Of course, you are free to change these two but these are my preferred coloring for shades of red. Setting -100 for Cyan gives this warm coloring.
Tumblr media
Second Selective Color - I will rename the layer as YELLOW and set the following values: CYAN: -100, MAGENTA: +40, YELLOW: +30, BLACK: 40
Cyan is also set to -100. This adds more warmth to the tone of the image. Then you may change the remaining sliders to your preferred values.

Third Selective Color - I will rename the layer as CYAN and set the following values: CYAN: -60, MAGENTA: +20, YELLOW: +100, BLACK: +40
I don't have a rule for CYAN. This really depends on the color I want to achieve for the shades of blue. Depending on the values, you can make your color look blue/cyan/purple. In this case, I wanted to tone down the brightness of the cyan.

Fourth Selective Color - I will rename the layer as Black and White and set the following values: BLACK: +5
This is just to slightly darken the black shades of the image. I label it Black and White because I sometimes change the value of Black for White but in this case, adjusting the white doesn't help so no changes were made.

Gradient Map Adjustment Layer - I do not use this layer all the time. It really depends on the image. When I wanted to add another shade of colors to the image, that's the time I would use this. And I use a maximum of 2 gradients only.
The image looks okay now to me but let me add some gradient just to show how I use this layer. I use Gray_10 which is one of the preset gradients available in PS. Then I check the Reverse option to emphasize the contrasts of the colors. Then I set Blend Mode to Soft Light, Opacity at 100%.
Then I add another Gradient Map Layer. I use Purple_17. In this case, I didn't check the Reverse option.
Then I set Blend Mode to Soft Light, Opacity at 35%.

Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer - this one is optional. I use this on my gifs to increase the warm tones of the image.
Tumblr media
I only change the values of Red for additional warm tones.

At this point, I also wanted to make the cool colors lose saturation, so I added another Hue/Saturation layer. To have a grayish effect on cool colors and make the reds stand out even more.

Brightness/Contrast Adjustment Layer - you can use the Auto function and then just make the adjustments you want.
In my case, I set the Contrast to -50 most of the time, then the Brightness varies. For this example, I set Brightness to +8.
Tumblr media
Then last but not least, I made some slight changes to the Levels Adjustment Layer and then adjusted Brightness to -3.

To compare, I will post the original GIF, with LUT file only, and the final GIF coloring respectively:

I hope this helps, anon!
I might create a specific tag for this kind of post and just include it on my master list pinned post so it's easy to find. Also, if you ever use this coloring style or the LUT file as part of your coloring, there is no need to credit but if possible, please tag me in your creations (#userartless) so I can see how you personalized the file and made it your own. ^^
