Anna Esposito in “What I’ve done”. Passando in rassegna le opere di Anna Esposito in mostra ad Atene si ha la sensazione di assistere alla inesorabile narrazione del disfacimento del nostro pianeta.

The effects of bullying are so horrifyingly long lasting. Recently seeing that gifted kid burnout post really solidified that realization. I was bullied in elementary and middle school because I was fat, autistic, gay, and poor. And my year had many, many "gifted kids" who participated in things like Junior Great Books, the Knowledge Bowl, Math Masters, etc. I was one of those kids, but I was always made to feel inferior both academically and socially. I still have episodes where I genuinely think and feel that I am completely incompetent, especially regarding anything to do with math. I remember my dream of pursuing a doctorate in math after graduating college and crumble under the guilt I feel for having to take a break from academics for my mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing. It's been two and a half years since I graduated, and I'm still not even remotely ready (pandemic aside) to go back to school because I feel so inadequate. So, I try to encourage myself by remembering what I have achieved already. I tell myself, "You double-majored in math and Japanese, studied abroad in Japan for an entire semester, and still managed to finish in four years. You graduated summa cum laude, with highest honors. Your GPA was over 3.9. You were granted distinction in Japanese. You were inducted into the National Japanese Honor Society. You were inducted into Pi Mu Epsilon, the math honor society. You were inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, the top ten percent of the top ten percent of all colleges in the nation. You did this after teaching yourself high school completely online for four years. You did this amidst multiple medical emergencies: a broken ankle, severe nosebleeds, electrocauterization, stomach lining erosion, gallstones, and gallbladder removal. You did this despite ongoing depression, anxiety, and self-harm. You did this without knowing you're autistic. You did this amongst several family emergencies: gramma with staph infections, sepsis, and an aneurysm, brother with diabetic ketoacidosis, binge drinking, and malnourishment, mother with vestibular migraines, an alcoholic father, euthanizing a sick pet, and money crises." I tell myself this, and then I think, "There is absolutely no way on God's green Earth that I would be able to get a doctorate in math. I am not smart enough. I am not strong enough. I will never be ready." Because that is what my brain has been abused into thinking. And then I believe what I think. And now I'm here.

Mirella Bentivoglio, "We apologize to thee For thine own Duplicity" (E. Dickinson), 1967 [gramma_epsilon, Athens. © Mirella Bentivoglio / Archivio Mirella Bentivoglio, Roma]
Heavenly Father—take to thee Emily Dickinson (1461) "Heavenly Father"—take to thee The supreme iniquity Fashioned by thy candid Hand In a moment contraband— Though to trust us—seems to us More respectful—"We are Dust"— We apologize to thee For thine own Duplicity—
