Very cool find from last spring- a Florida vinegaroon (Mastigoproctus floridanus) that was hiding inside a rotting log.

despite her impressive size, this rarely encountered Florida endemic is actually the smallest of the 3 vinegaroons in the US, and some of the Mastigoproctus species from Mexico and southwards get even larger.

and yes they’re called vinegaroons (among other fun names) because they squirt concentrated vinegar from their butt as a chemical defense

Warning Bugs: Mastigoproctus giganteus, more commonly known as the giant whip scorpion, the giant vinegaroon, or the grampus, is a species of whip scorpion in the family Thelyphonidae. Which is endemic to Mexico and the Southern United States from as far west as the Baha peninsula to as far east as florida and from Oklahoma in the north down to central mexico. Inhabiting deserts, scrublands, dry forests, grasslands, and arid mountain ranges, they are a primarily solitary and nocturnal species which spends its days inside of burrows, hollow logs, or rock crevices and emerging at night to feed upon various insects, worms, millapeads, scorpions, slugs, and small frogs/ toads. Giant vinegaroons are themselves preyed on by large toads, raccoons, coatis, armadillos, skunks, bears, hogs and peccaries, ground birds such as roadrunners, lizards, and tarantulas. Reaching around 1.5 -2.5 inches (40- 60mm) in length not including there tail, giant vinegaroons sport eight eyes. They have six legs used for movement, two long antenniform front legs that they use to feel around and detect vibrations, and two large pedipalps modified into claws. Additionally they sport a long, thin, whip-like tail, the origin of the common name whipscorpion. From the base of this tail they can spray a substance composed of 85% acetic acid in order to defend themselves. Acetic acid is the main component of vinegar, so the spray smells strongly of vinegar, leading to the common name "vinegaroon". The mating season occurs in fall, during which time females will actively seak out males. After mating, females carry the fertilized eggs internally for a few months, before laying some 30 to 40 eggs in a fluid filled sac which she then carries on her abdomen for another 2 months until hatching. The mother will then carry and protect her babies for another month until there first molt. Under ideal conditions a giant vinegaroon will reach sexual maturity at 3-4 years of age and may live upwards of 7.

Titan King + Beast King

These two have been on my radar for forever, but it wasn’t until they revealed the recently released Jurassic King (and I found a decently priced Beast King) that I finally had the drive to go all in. Even after all this time, Jyuohger is still my favorite complete Sentai toy line, and having it continued six years later, even if they are just repaints, is pretty exciting.

Titan King (Cube Bald Eagle / Cube Grampus / Cube Rabbit): A very nice repaint. Cube Rabbit is probably the only Cube with more paint apps than the original, but the apps that they do have are well placed and makes them feel very different than the originals. Titan King also has a very cohesive look. Even though everyone is a different color, they’re all close enough with matching white and metallic red details that bring everything together.

Beast King (Cube Mandrill / Cube Cheetah / Cube Mammoth): Definitely more vibrant than its partner; Beast King again has fewer overall paint apps, but has a lot of decals instead. It tries to bring everything together with the brighter head and shoulders, but it’s not as interesting a package as Titan King.

Beast Titan King: A pretty decent redeco with a few issues. I like how they incorporated the horizontal stripes into the shoulders, the use of color around the face, the large amount of white to make it more cohesive. The few things that I find not bad but distracting are the neon orange arm (the only obvious bright color on it besides white), and the fact that Cube Rabbit has so much more visible detail than every other Cube, which draws your attention. If Mandrill was a darker color, or if Mammoth had ANY detail as feet this probably wouldn’t be an issue.

Overall, Titan King is an excellent recolor even if it doesn’t have as much paint as its predecessor, and Beast King has some neat ideas but flounders a bit in execution. Personally I would have liked it if they did a unified color scheme like they did with Brave Dino King, but I’m still happy to have more Cubes. Can’t wait to make Jurassic Animal King.

“On Eternal Patrol - USS Grampus (SS-207)” Eighty Years Ago, Today – (Friday) March 5th, 1943 – In the Pacific, the American submarine USS Grampus (SS-207, Tambor-Class) is on patrol somewhere in vicinity of the New Georgia Islands group on the western side of the Solomon Islands archipelago. Inexplicably, she vanishes without a trace. The most plausible explanation is an attack from the Japanese Navy. A pair of Japanetwrbakese destroyers, the “Minegumo”and the “Murasame” reported an attack near Kolombangara island, which resulted with an oil slick. This could have been the end of Grampus, but both ships were sunk by US Navy cruisers the following day (we’ll cover that tomorrow), leading to a loss of the ships’ logs and records. We’ll never know for sure, as Grampus’ wreck has never been found. Grampus was lost with All Hands. Her entire crew – 71 Officers and Men – remain entombed in her hull on the floor of the Pacific. The Boat, and her men, remain On Eternal Patrol. Today, we offer our deepest reverence to the US Navy Sailors and the USS Grampus who we lost eighty years ago, today. this took SO long, but it was definitely worth it! i've been wanting to do a piece like this for a while and even though it definitely took longer than i wanted, i'm pretty satisified with the result.
