The green iguana (Iguana iguana), also known as the American iguana, is a large, arboreal, mostly herbivorous species of lizard of the genus Iguana. Usually, this animal is simply called the iguana. The green iguana ranges over a large geographic area; it is native from southern Brazil and Paraguay as far north as Mexico and the Caribbean islands, and have been introduced from South America to Puerto Rico and are very common throughout the island, where they are colloquially known as gallina de palo and considered an invasive species; in the United States, feral populations also exist in South Florida (including the Florida Keys), Hawaii, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Rio Grande Valley of Texas.[3][4]

A herbivore, it has adapted significantly with regard to locomotion and osmoregulation as a result of its diet. It grows to 1.5 metres (4.9 ft) in length from head to tail, although a few specimens have grown more than 2 metres (6.6 ft) with bodyweights upward of 20 pounds (9.1 kg).

Using nuclear and mitochondrial DNA-sequence data to explore the phylogenic history of the green iguana, scientists from El Salvador, Mexico and the United States studied animals collected from 17 different countries.[6] The topology of phylogeny indicated that the species originated in South America and eventually radiated through Central America and the Caribbean.[6] The study revealed no unique mitochondrial DNA haplotypes for subspecific status, but did indicate the deep lineage divergence between Central and South American populations.[6]

The word iguana is derived from a Spanish form of the Taíno name for the species: iwana.[7][8] In some Spanish-speaking countries, males of the species are referred to as gorrobo or ministro and juveniles are called iguanita or gorrobito.[9]

Distribution and habitat

The native range of the green iguana extends from southern Mexico to central Brazil, Dominican Republic, Paraguay, and Bolivia and the Caribbean; specifically Grenada, Aruba, Curaçao, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, and Útila.[10][11] They have been introduced to Grand Cayman, Puerto Rico, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, and the United States Virgin Islands.[3][4][11][12][13] Furthermore, green iguanas colonised the island of Anguilla in 1995 after being washed ashore following a hurricane.[14] Though the species is not native to Martinique, a small wild colony of released or escaped green iguanas endures at historic Fort Saint Louis.[15]

Green iguanas are diurnal, arboreal, and are often found near water.[16][17] Agile climbers, Iguana iguana can fall up to 50 feet (15 m) and land unhurt (iguanas use their hind leg claws to clasp leaves and branches to break a fall).[17][18][19]During cold, wet weather, green iguanas prefer to stay on the ground for greater warmth.[9] When swimming, an iguana remains submerged, letting its four legs hang limply against its side. They propel through the water with powerful tail strokes.[9]

In South and Central America, where the green iguana is native, it is an endangered species in some countries because people have been hunting and eating this gallino de palo ("bamboo chicken" or "chicken of the trees") for a long time.[20]

Anatomy and morphologies

Despite their name, green iguanas can come in different colors. In southern countries of their range, such as Peru, green iguanas appear bluish in color with bold blue markings.[17] On islands such as Bonaire, Curaçao, Aruba, and Grenada, a green iguana's color may range from green to lavender, black, and even pink.[8][17] Green iguanas from the western region of Costa Rica are red, and animals of the northern ranges, such as Mexico, appear orange.[8][17] Juvenile green iguanas from El Salvador are often bright blue as babies, but they lose this color as they get older.[8]

Adult iguanas found on most of St. Lucia, mainly on the northeastern coast, Louvette and Grand Anse, have many differences from other green iguana populations. They are light green with predominant black stripes. Instead of the typical orange dewlap, the iguanas of St. Lucia have a black dewlap. When compared to the common green iguana, females lay about half the amount of eggs, 25 instead of 50. Scales to the back of their head, near the jawbone, are smaller. Their iris is white or cream, whereas other green iguanas have yellow irises.[21][22]

Green iguanas possess a row of spines along their backs and along their tails, which helps to protect them from predators.[17] Their whip-like tails can be used to deliver painful strikes and like many other lizards, when grabbed by the tail, the iguana can allow it to break, so it can escape and eventually regenerate a new one.[23] In addition, iguanas have a well-developed dewlap, which helps regulate their body temperature.[18] This dewlap is used in courtships and territorial displays.[8][17][24]

Green iguanas have excellent vision, enabling them to detect shapes and motions at long distances.[25] As green iguanas have only a few rod cells, they have poor vision in low-light conditions. At the same time, they have cells called “double cone cells” that give them sharp color vision and enable them to see ultraviolet wavelengths.[25] This ability is highly useful when basking so the animal can ensure that it absorbs enough sunlight in the forms of UVA and UVB to produce vitamin D.[8][19]

Green iguanas have a white photosensory organ on the top of their heads called the parietal eye (also called the third eye, pineal eye or pineal gland), in contrast to most other lizards that have lost this primitive feature.[25] This "eye" has only a rudimentary retina and lens and cannot form images,[25] but is sensitive to changes in light and dark and can detect movement.[25] This helps the iguana detect predators stalking it from above.[25]

Green iguanas have very sharp teeth that are capable of shredding leaves and even human skin.[8] These teeth are shaped like a leaf, broad and flat, with serrations on the edge. The similarity of these teeth to those of one of the first dinosaurs discovered led to the dinosaur being named Iguanodon, meaning "iguana tooth", and the incorrect assumption that it had resembled a gigantic iguana.[26] The teeth are situated on the inner sides of the jawbones, which is why they are hard to see in smaller specimens.[24]

Primarily herbivorous, green iguanas are presented with a special problem for osmoregulation; plant matter contains more potassium and as it has less nutritional content per gram, more must be eaten to meet metabolic needs.[27] As green iguanas are not capable of creating liquid urine more concentrated than their bodily fluids, like birds they excrete nitrogenous wastes as urate salts through a salt gland.[27] As a result, green iguanas have developed a lateral nasal gland to supplement renal salt secretion by expelling excess potassium and sodium chloride.[27]

Green iguanas from Guatemala and southern Mexico predominantly have small horns on their snouts between their eyes and their nostrils, whereas others do not.[17] Naturalists once classified these iguanas as a separate subspecies (Iguana iguana rhinolopha); however, this classification has been found to be invalid based on mitochondrial DNA and iguanas with similar nose projections appearing randomly in other populations and interbreeding freely with those that do not share this trait.[8][17]

The green iguana is a large lizard and is probably the largest species in the iguana family, though a few in the genus Cyclura may match or exceed it in weight.[28] Adults typically grow to 1.2 to 1.7 m (3.9 to 5.6 ft) in length from head to tail.[8] As in all iguanas, the tail comprises much of this length, and the snout-to-vent length of most green iguanas is 30 to 42 cm (12 to 17 in). An average adult male will weigh around 4 kg (8.8 lb) while the smaller adult female will typically weigh 1.2 to 3 kg (2.6 to 6.6 lb).[29] A few large males can reach or exceed 6 to 8 kg (13 to 18 lb) in weight and 2 m (6.6 ft) long.[30] Some specimens have even reportedly been measured at a body weight of greater than 20 lb (9.1 kg).[8]

Reproductive biology

Male green iguanas have highly developed femoral pores on the underside of their thighs which secrete a scent (females have femoral pores, but they are smaller in comparison to those of the males).[8] In addition, the dorsal spines that run along a green iguana's back are noticeably longer and thicker in males than they are in females, making the animals somewhat sexually dimorphic.[8]

Male green iguanas tend to display more dominant behaviors, such as head bobbing and tail whipping. They also tend to develop a taller dorsal crest than females, as well as taller dorsal spines (or spikes). Large, round, very pronounced jowls are generally a male characteristic. Jowls are located under the jaw and are protected by the subtympanic plate, which is a large, green, circular-shaped scale.

Green iguanas are oviparous, with females laying clutches of 20 to 71 eggs once per year during a synchronized nesting period.[23][31] The female green iguana gives no parental protection after egg laying, apart from defending the nesting burrow during excavation.[31] In Panama, the green iguana has been observed sharing nest sites with American crocodiles and in Honduras with spectacled caimans.[11]

The hatchlings emerge from the nest after 10–15 weeks of incubation.[23][31] Once hatched, the young iguanas look similar to the adults in color and shape, resembling adult females more so than males and lacking dorsal spines.[31]

Juveniles stay in familial groups for the first year of their lives.[31] Male green iguanas in these groups often use their own bodies to shield and protect females from predators and it appears to be the only species of reptile which does this.[32]

Behavior

When frightened by a predator, green iguanas will attempt to flee and, if near a body of water, dive into it and swim away.[9] If cornered by a threat, the green iguana will extend and display the dewlap under its neck, stiffen and puff up its body, hiss, and bob its head at the aggressor.[17] If the threat persists, the iguana can lash with its tail, bite and use its claws in defense.[9] The wounded are more inclined to fight than uninjured prey.[9]

Green iguanas use "head bobs" and dewlaps in a variety of ways in social interactions, such as greeting another iguana or to court a possible mate.[8] The frequency and number of head bobs have particular meanings to other iguanas.[17]

Green iguanas are hunted by predatory birds and their fear of these is exploited as a ploy to catch them in the wild.[9] The sound of a hawk's whistle or scream makes the iguana freeze and it becomes easier to capture.[9]

Diet

Green iguanas are primarily herbivores, with captives feeding on leaves such as turnip greens, mustard greens, dandelion greens, flowers, fruit, and growing shoots of upwards of 100 different species of plant.[8][31] In Panama one of the green iguana's favorite foods is wild plum, Spondias mombin.[9]

Although they will consume a wide variety of foods if offered, green iguanas are naturally herbivorous and require a precise ratio of minerals (2 to 1 calcium to phosphorus) in their diet.[19][33] It is important for captive iguanas to have a variety of leafy greens along with fruits and vegetables such as turnip greens, collards, butternut squash, acorn squash, mango, and parsnip.[34][35] Juvenile iguanas often eat feces from adults in order to acquire the essential microflora to digest their low-quality and hard-to-process vegetarian-only diet.[9][31]

There is some debate as to whether captive green iguanas should be fed animal protein.[8] There is evidence of wild iguanas eating grasshoppers and tree snails, usually as a byproduct of eating plant material.[36][37] Wild adult green iguanas have been observed eating birds' eggs.[10] Zoologists, such as Adam Britton, believe that such a diet containing protein is unhealthy for the animal's digestive system, resulting in severe long-term health damage, including kidney failure and leading to premature death.[38] On the other side of the argument is that green iguanas at the Miami Seaquarium in Key Biscayne, Florida, have been observed eating dead fish and individuals kept in captivity have been known to eat mice without any ill effects.[8] De Vosjoli writes that captive animals have been known to survive and thrive on eating nothing but whole rodent block, or monkey chow, and one instance of romaine lettuce with vitamin and calcium supplements.[8] However, it is only recommended that captive iguanas not be fed lettuce or meat, and instead receive the vitamins and minerals they need via a purely herbivorous diet.

The American pet trade has put a great demand on the green iguana; 800,000 iguanas were imported into the U.S. in 1995 alone, primarily originating from captive farming operations based in their native countries (Honduras, El Salvador, Colombia, and Panama).[39] However, these animals are demanding to care for properly over their lifetime, and many die within a few years of acquisition.[8][40]

Although green iguanas in captivity will eat meat if presented with it, excessive consumption of animal protein results in severe kidney problems and possible premature death.[8][38] Misinformed pet owners tend to feed iguanas iceberg lettuce, which provides iguanas with water, but has little nutritional value compared to other vegetables.[19] A captive green iguana's diet should consist of fresh leafy vegetables, such as mustard greens, collard greens, dandelion, arugula, or kale, and access to fresh water.[8]

Green iguanas will thrive only in temperatures of 79 °F (26 °C) to 95 °F (35 °C) and must have appropriate sources of UVB and UVA lighting, or else their bodies cannot produce vitamin D that promotes calcium absorption, which can result in a metabolic bone disease that can be fatal.[8][19] In some locales (such as New York City and Hawaii), iguanas are considered exotic pets, and ownership is prohibited.[41][42] Due to the potential impact of an introduced species on Hawaii's ecosystem, the state has strict regulations regarding the import and possession of green iguanas; violators can spend three years in jail and be fined up to $200,000.[43]

Douglass is separated from his Grandmother moved to the Wye House plantation.

1826 Truth escape from slavery with her infant daughter Sophia born in the same year.

1828 Truth, after court proceedings, is reunited with her five year old son Peter illegally sold by Dumont in Alabama.

1829 Truth moves to New York City with her son Peter and becomes house keeper for Christian Evangelist Elijah Pierson.

1830 Douglass’s master’s Wife Sophia begins to teach him the alphabet, her Husband Hugh Auld however disapproves of the slave being made literate, being educated and gaining an understanding of what it means to be an equal, Sophia, also later snatches a newspaper from Douglass.

Douglass learns to read from white children in his neighbourhood and from observing the writings of men he works with. with this Douglass’s reading is greatly increased.

Douglass after being hired begins to teach large numbers of other slaves from the plantation to read the New Testament at weekly Sunday school.

1831 Delany at the age of 19 moves West to Pittsburgh where he works as a barber and labourer.

December 25 SamSharpe owned by Samuel Sharpe Equire Attorney, enslaved on both the Croydon Plantation and in Montego Bay, Saint James where he is a Baptist deacon in the church of Thomas Burchell, leads a strike which turns into a rebellion of 60, 000 slaves from the parishes of St. James, Trelawny and Westmoreland. British forces suppress the rebellion under Sir Willoughby Cotton. 500 slaves are killed, 207 during the rebellion and 310- 340 executed, according to the account by Henry Belby three or four were executed at a time. Burchell, born on Christmas day is buried in the Abney Park cemetery in Stoke Newington, London. 1832 March The Jamaica Assembly estimated property damage of 1, 154, 589/£52, 000, 000.

August 21 Nat Turner leads a rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia.

1832 Delany during the National cholera epidemic becomes an apprentice to Dr. Andrew N. Mc Dowell, learns fire cupping and leeching techniques, and also studies with abolitionist doctors such as Dr. F. Julius LeMoyne and Dr. Joseph P. Gazzam of Pittsburgh.

August 3 Edward Wilmot Blyden is born in in St Thomas, Danish West Indies (present day US Virgin Islands).

Truth meets Robert Matthews/Prophet Matthias and begins working for him as a house keeper at Matthias Kingdom communal colony.

1833 Douglass is taken back from Hugh Auld by his brother Thomas Auld and sent to Edward Covey.

May Truth speaks attends Ohio Womens Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio organised by Hannah Tracy and Frances Dana Barker Gage, where she delivers her Am I not a Woman speech.

After 42 years at St. Paul Street and Central Avenue, and mostly because of the endless railroad traffic nearby, the monument had become “grimy and sooty.” And so a committee was formed, and a decision was made to move the monument to Highland Park. The place in the park for the statue was within a few hundred yards of where Douglass had once lived, on South Avenue. Not exactly the apex of city life, but away from the grime of the trains.

And so today the statue stands, as it has for 75 years, in the park. It was rededicated on September 4th, 1941.

1852 July 5 Douglass’s makes his What to the slave is the fourth of July? address to the ladies of the Rochester Anti-Slavery Sewing Society at Corinthian Hall, Rochester. It is admitted in the fact that southern statute books are covered with enactments forbidding under severe fines and penalties the teaching of the slave to read or write.

Delany being discriminated against and on account of African Americans not being elevated to such positions, publishes his The Condition, Elevation, Emigration and Destiny of the Colored People of the United States, Politically Considered.

March 12 Douglass meets up with John Brown and George de Baptiste William Webs house in Detroit.

May Delany sails from New York to Liberia, signs treaty chiefs in the Abeokuta region for settlers to live on so long as they can.

October 16 John Brown raid Harpers Ferry federal armoury Virginia.

1860 Delany leaves Liberia for England where he is honoured by the International Statistical Congress, and returns to America the same year.

Douglass described the spirit of those awaiting the proclamation: “We were waiting and listening as for a bolt from the sky … we were watching … by the dim light of the stars for the dawn of a new day … we were longing for the answer to the agonizing prayers of centuries.”

When he was nine, Booker and his family in Virginia gained freedom under the Emancipation Proclamation as US troops occupied their region. Booker was thrilled by the formal day of their emancipation in early 1865:

As the great day drew nearer, there was more singing in the slave quarters than usual. It was bolder, had more ring, and lasted later into the night. Most of the verses of the plantation songs had some reference to freedom… Some man who seemed to be a stranger (a United States officer, I presume) made a little speech and then read a rather long paper—the Emancipation Proclamation, I think. After the reading we were told that we were all free, and could go when and where we pleased. My mother, who was standing by my side, leaned over and kissed her children, while tears of joy ran down her cheeks. She explained to us what it all meant, that this was the day for which she had been so long praying, but fearing that she would never live to see.

Delany becomes the first black line field officer in the U.S. Army as well as the only black officer to receive commission of the highest rank of Major during the Civil War.

April 14 Delany invited to the War Department ceremony in Charleston, South Carolina, attending with Robert Vesey son of hanged black abolitionist, Denmark Vesey in ship named the Planter former slave Robert Smalls, Major Genral Robert Anderson Fort Sumter 1861, abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison Senator Warner speak, Massachusetts Senator Henry Wilson and abolitionist Henry Ward Beecher.

April 15 President Lincoln assassinated by John Wilkes Booth.

Delany letter raises fund for Lincoln memorial.

Delany serves under General Rufus Saxton in the 52nd U.S. Colored Troops and is later transferred to the Freedman Bureau in Hilton Head. Freedman Bureau and resigns from the army.

Truth works in Freedman’s Hospital in Washington.

July 1 Sahle Maryam Emperor Menelik II escapes from Magdala.

October 7 James Geoghegon creates a disturbance in Morant Bay court house during the trail of a man sentenced and convicted for trespassing on an inactive sugar plantation, the police try to arrest Geoghegon, beat two officers with sticks and stones, the court house issues a warrant for those including Bogle.

October 11 Bogle leads hundreds to the court house, as they approach Cleave to black the confrontation between the militia begins with attacking the militia with sticks and stones, the militia shoot and kill 25 people dead, the parish goes into a state of unrest, Eyre declares martial law and sends government troops led by Brigadier General Alexander Nelson to bring Bogle and to the court to be tried and convicted, the militia kill innocent men, women and children 439 dead and arrest 354 tried and executed, flogged and sentenced, the soldiers also burn thousands of homes, Eyre has Gordon who he believes to have made the matter worse arrested in Kingston and brought to Morant Bay where he is tried under martial law, convicted and executed.

December 6 (Slaves in Union-held areas and Northern states are freed with the adoption of the 13th Amendment.

1867 May 9-10 Truth speaks at the American Equal Rights Association and moves from Battle Creek to Harmonia.

1868 February William Edward Burghardt Du Bois is born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.

Douglass supports the U.S. Presidential campaign of Ulysses S Grant.

April 10 plain Arogye plateau of Magdala.

1874 Delany runs as an Independent Republican for Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina (with John T. Green as the gubernatorial candidate). Former Republican Governor Franklin Moses Jr. loose ticket to Republican Attorney Daniel H. Chamberlain.

March Douglas becomes President of Freeman Saving bank.

June 29 The Freeman Saving Bank goes bankrupt.

1875 Delany charged with defrauding a church forcing him to resign from his position Trail Justice serves jail sentence pardoned by the Republican Governor with the intervention of Wade Hampton.

1876 Delany supports Hampton as the Democratic candidate in the gubernatorial election paramilitary group Red Shirts White League military arm of the Democratic Party suppress Black voting at polls more than 150 Black’s killed by rifle clubs 20, 000 white men.

61 Fun Things To Do in Grenada (2020 Edition)

The island of Grenada in the Caribbean is a true jewel. There are numerous things to do in Grenada, but there isn’t a lot of information online about this tiny island nation. We’ve lived here for over 4 years, so we know lots of unique things to do in Grenada and this blog has more information than any other online today.

The Isle of Spice is located just far enough south in the Caribbean to avoid the tourism masses that the northern islands see, yet it’s still easy enough to travel to Grenada on a cruise ship or a direct flight from North America. There are so many things to do in Grenada, you could spend a year and never be bored!

If you’re wondering what to do in Grenada during your trip, I’ve got you covered. Here is my list of 61 awesome things to do in Grenada:

*This post has been updated 2020. These items are in no particular order and the Parishes are listed in brackets.

1. Try “Doubles” (St. George) – one of the best things to do in Grenada for foodies

Doubles are a delicious breakfast found in the southern Caribbean and while they’re originally from Trinidad, they’re so delicious that they make our list of things to do in Grenada.

Sweet and spicy chickpea curry is wrapped inside of a soft bara bread. Latta makes the best ones on the island, and you can find her serving doubles out of the back of her orange van on Wall Street in Grand Anse. Update: Latta and Frank now have an orange and dark coloured van! Look for either one of them.

2. Grand Etang National Park (St. Andrews)

This beautiful, lush park is set high in the mountains of Grenada. At 1,900ft, this is the perfect spot to escape the heat and enjoy nature. With waterfalls, a lake, and endless walking trails, Grand Etang is a place you could return to again and again. Visiting this National Park is one of the top things to do in Grenada for sure.

*Note* These days there’s a new highwire canopy obstacle course that has been built in the rainforest at Grand Etang falls. Many people enjoy this activity and it’s something fun to do in Grenada with kids.

3. La Sagesse Beach (St. David)

A stunning cove with soft sand, clear waters and lined with palm trees. This is one of the best beaches in Grenada. You can walk the length of the beach and hardly see another person. There’s only one hotel on this beach, which has a restaurant open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

*Note: as La Sagesse is often quite quiet, be mindful of your belongings and your safety when on this beach.

Do you have a day to spare and want to take a tour around the island? Many people aren’t comfortable driving abroad (and, the driving in Grenada can be a bit crazy!), but a great option is to take a half-day tour, or a full-day tour while ticking off some of the main activities in Grenada along the way.

4. Sunsets at La Luna (St. George)

There are many places to enjoy the golden sunset with a glass of wine in hand, but the best spot has to be at the gorgeous La Luna Hotel. Going for a swim, lounging on beach chairs and enjoying the sunset with a drink is one of the best things to do in Grenada. You can come here for a drink at the beautiful open-air bar even if you’re not a hotel guest.

Sunset at Laluna is a real secret on the island! Even the locals don’t know about the half-price drinks, so you won’t likely find this on any other list of things to do in Grenada.

5. Sailing (St. George)

Getting out on the water is a must when visiting an island! Sailing up the and down the Caribbean coastline aboard a catamaran is a magical experience. 6. BBQ’s in Grenada (Island Wide)

Every weekend, local vendors set up their BBQs on the street and serve up some delicious pork and chicken. Check out the BBQ at D’Cliff, St. Paul’s, Jerk chicken in Grand Anse Valley, and Rosanne’s BBQ near Red Gate (St. David) it’s the best BBQ on the island!

7. Dodgy Dock (True Blue, St. George)

8. Hashing: One of The Most Unique Things To Do in Grenada (Island Wide)

The Hash House Harriers are a social running/walking group that meets every Saturday. Someone sets up a trail around the island (usually about 2 hours long) and the runners/walkers follow piles of shredded paper until they reach the finish line. The starting and finishing point is typically at a rum shack! It’s a lot of fun and a very unique thing to do in Grenada.

Fun Note: Hashing is one of the best things to do on Grenada because you can become a part of a pretty cool community with loads of locals, expats, students and tourists on the island.

9. Scuba Diving

The diving around Grenada is stunning. This island isn’t really known for being a diving destination, but with the first Underwater Sculpture Park in the world, shipwrecks, and coral that has been virtually untouched, it really should be more popular. 10. Friday Bonfire & BBQ (St. George)

This is one of the best things to do in Grenada on a Friday night. If you like bonfires, s’mores, steel pan music and BBQs (and who doesn’t?!) head to the Savvy Beach Cabana, which is one of the best restaurants in Grenada.

Dine under the stars with your feet submerged in the soft sand, while the local steel pan band serenades you with their tunes. For dinner, take your pick between chicken, steak, fish, lobster and more, which are all served with a side of rice and peas, mashed pumpkin, roast potatoes and house salad.

For dessert, relive your childhood by toasting a marshmallow on the beach bonfire to create your own s’more, complete with graham crackers and a square of Grenadian chocolate.

Insider Tip: Many guests assume that the side dishes are served in hollowed-out coconut shells, but they’re actually made from calabash – impress your server with your island knowledge!

Outside of Friday nights, the Savvy Beach Cabana is open for lunch and drinks from 10:00am to sundown. This is a great lunchtime spot with a diverse, tasty and affordable menu. Don’t miss the catch of the day, the chuck burger and (when in season) the lobster linguine.

11. Whisper Cove Marina (St. David)

If you’re looking for something to do in Grenada on Saturday afternoons, look no further! For only $10 USD you can enjoy a steak lunch with french fries, salad, and a cold beer! (Update 2020: This restaurant is now under new management. On Saturdays, they now offer Spicy wings, Fish cakes, Fish tacos or Battered fish, with fries for $11 USD).

12. Hog Island (St. David)

This gorgeous island is just a 10-minute boat ride from Whisper Cove Marina, or you can drive the bumpy road from Mt. Hartman Dove Sanctuary, and then walk across the bridge. Hog Island has a great trail for hiking, a nice (shallow beach), and wonderful views. This is one of the more offtrack places to visit in Grenada.

13. Roger’s Bar (Hog Island)

There’s a little ramshackle bar located on Hog Island and every Sunday, Roger puts on a lunch BBQ consisting of chicken or fish, green salad, macaroni salad and potato salad. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a beer while swimming in the stunning water.

14. St. George’s Carenage (St. George)

St. George’s (what the locals call “town”) is a very colourful capital city! Walking along the carenage while enjoying the views of the water, the buildings and the boats coming and going makes for a great afternoon.

15. Fort George (St. George)

This fort was built in 1705 by the French and is located to the west of the harbour. The views from atop the fort looking down on St. George’s are fabulous. An entrance fee of $5EC is payable when you enter the fort.

16. Volunteer at the GSPCA (St. George)

Do some good during your holiday and spend a couple of hours helping the sweet dogs and cats at the GSPCA. You can stop by for a visit to give the animals some love, spend an hour or so taking a dog for a walk, or, if you don’t have the time, you could always donate some cash to this non-profit company. Be warned, the fur babies are so cute you’ll want to take one home with you!

While looking for things to do in Grenada, consider activities that give back to the local communities. The GSPCA helps provide affordable animal care to locals through donations and volunteer work.

17. Belmont Estate (St. Patrick)

This gorgeous 17th-century plantation is a great place to go to learn about cocoa processing. You can also visit gardens, the goat dairy farm and enjoy a delicious Grenadian lunch. To go on a tour of the plantation and learn about cocoa, the cost is only 13EC ($4.80) /person, which includes tasting some delicious chocolate at the end!

18. See The Leatherback Turtles (St. Patrick)

Leatherback turtles start their nesting season on Levera Beach in March, and the hatchlings head out to the water by July. Seeing these massive turtles haul themselves up on shore, dig a canal in the sand to drop their eggs, cover them up and head back out to sea is an unforgettable experience. You need to come here in the evening with a guide in order to see the turtles. Learn more about volunteering with the conservation of leatherback turtles here.

19. River Antoine Rum Distillery (St. Patrick)

The best Grenada rum depends on who you ask, but if you’re looking for an interesting tour, check out this place. Tours here are $5EC ($1.85) and you get a tasting at the end. Bottom’s up!

20. Prickly Bay Marina (Lance Aux Epines, St. George)

This is where lots of sailors and yachties hangout. The vibe here is good, the pizzas are delicious (1/2 price on Monday and 2-for-1 on Saturday) and happy hour runs from 5:00 – 6:00pm. The sunsets over the marina here are nice as well.

21. Try Oil Down – Grenada’s National Dish (Islandwide)

This one-pot dish is actually very complex and time-consuming to make. The ingredients are coconut, saffron, callaloo, chicken, crab, dumplings, breadfruit (and more). We’ve only seen it made at friend’s houses, or at get-togethers, so if you want to sample a taste of Grenada, ask at your hotel where you can try it!

While we’ve listed oil down as one of the things to do in Grenada, it’s actually quite hard to find because it’s so difficult to prepare that most restaurants won’t feature it on their menu. To maximize your chance of trying this delicious dish, come around Carnival time when there’s an oil down on many street corners.

22. Sunset Sailing (St. George)

For an amazing afternoon of sailing (or multi-day trips), check out Savvy. They sail on a traditional sloop boat and offer fun times on the sea. You’ll sail up the west coast, do some swimming, some drinking and of course, enjoy the company of Danny and his crew. 23. Levera Beach (St. Patrick)

Located at the very northern tip of the island, the beach here is lovely and is a great spot for a picnic. The beach is usually quite empty, so be mindful of your belongings. Also, this is not a good beach for swimming as currents are very strong.

24. Carib’s Leap (St. Patrick)

Located in the town of Sauteurs, this is a very historical spot in Grenada. In 1651, rather than face domination by the French invasion, the native Carib people leaped to their death off of this cliff.

25. Royal Mt. Carmel Waterfalls (St. Andrew)

Located just 3 km south of Grenville, these are the tallest waterfalls in Grenada. After an easy 20 – 30 minute walk you’ll arrive at the falls. A great place for a picnic and a swim.

26. Grand Anse Beach: One Of The Best Things To Do in Grenada! (St. George)

This is the largest beach in Grenada, and arguably the most beautiful. The sand is soft and white and the waters are clear and calm. This is the most popular beach in Grenada, yet it’s practically empty.

You can go diving, swimming, kayaking, snorkelling, or just chill out on the sand with a book in hand. It’s also a good spot to watch the sun set. This beach is one of the top tourist attractions in Grenada, and for good reason.

27. Umbrella’s Beach Bar (Grand Anse Beach, St. George)

Located on Grand Anse Beach, this is a popular spot for locals, students, tourists and expats. The food is good and it’s a casual place to head in for a drink. Try the Umbrella Burger! Fridays and Saturdays they have live music from 7:00 – 9:00 and on Sundays from 5:30 – 7:30pm.

28. Morne Rouge Beach (St. George)

Located one bay over from Grand Anse Beach on the south end, this is a gorgeous cove. The waters here are very calm and perfectly clear. This beach is much quieter than Grand Anse, and is one of the best beaches in Grenada.

29. Fort Frederick (St. George)

Built by the French, this fort is a great place to come for views of St. George’s and the Caribbean Sea. It’s right next to Fort Mathew (below) and they both make our list of things to do in Grenada because they both have great views over the nation’s capital, St.George.

30. Fort Mathew Bar (St. George)

Just adjacent to Fort Frederick, this was once an insane asylum! Interested in drinking cold beer inside tunnels with rum barrels used as tables? Check out this unique bar.

31. Practice Yoga (St. George)

Practicing yoga is one of the best things to do in Grenada after a long flight… or if you’ve been sitting on the beach for too long! There are a few great yoga spots around Grenada. Check out Spice Harmony Yoga in St. George, MitSukha at Coyaba Beach Resort (St. George) and Sankalpa at True Blue Resort (St. George).

32. Annandale Falls (St. George)

Located just 15 minutes from St. George’s, these are the easiest falls to visit on the island. The 15 meter high waterfall is beautiful and a great spot for a swim.

This is one of the most popular things to do in Grenada, so you’ll likely see lots of people (locals and tourists) at this refreshing hot spot.

33. Laura’s Spice Garden (St. David)

Grenada is known as the Island of Spice and a trip here wouldn’t be complete without learning about the nutmeg and other spices this island is famous for. The tour here is about 20 minutes and the guide will explain every use for each herb and plant on the property (if you’re lucky, she’ll smile). There’s a $5EC ($1.85) entrance fee.

34. Ronda’s Ice Cream (St. David)

This small, side of the road ice cream shop has local ice cream on offer. Make sure to try the cookies n’ cream! Located on your right-hand side when driving to La Sagesse Beach, if you’re coming from the south.

35. Levera National Park & Bathway Beach (St. Patrick)

A lovely area at the very northern reaches of the island. Walk around the lagoon, or enjoy the bird-watching. Bathway Beach is a great place to enjoy the afternoon as well, just be aware of strong surf here. A trip “up island” may seem like a long way to go, but it’s worth the drive and is one of the best things to do in Grenada.

36. Dragon Bay (St. George)

This local beach is a nice spot to enjoy a picnic and do some snorkelling. Here you’ll rarely see another tourist, it’s a great spot to get to know the locals.

37. Fish Friday in Gouyave (St. John)

An open-air event held each Friday. All sorts of fresh, local seafood is available and sold at little vendors. This is a very local event filled with good food, music and dancing in the street. It starts around 6:00pm and ends around 1:00am. This is one of the most popular things to do in Grenada.

38. Go For a Craft Beer (St. George)

Located near the Calabash Hotel in Lance Aux Epines is the West Indies Beer Company. The beers are brewed in-house and are very tasty. Try the IPA! Food here is also very affordable, and they often have live music. Click here to learn more.

39. Cycle Tour (St. George)

Mocha Spoke is a cool company here on the island offering cycle trips around Grenada. The guides are professional and the bikes are top-notch. Mocha Spoke is also an open air cafe, serving up waffles, paninis, and of course, coffee!

40. Carnival (St. George)

Carnival in Grenada is held every year, with the main music competitions and parades in July / early August. Music, costume and dance competitions happen all over the island. It’s a bright, colourful, crazy festival! Don’t miss J’ouvert, Monday Night Mas and Pretty Mas. If you’re looking for things to do in Grenada, this celebration is our top choice.

In our opinion, this is one of the absolute best things to do in Grenada.

41. Kayak Tour (St. David)

Conservation Kayak is the company to go with if you want to do a kayak tour. They leave from Le Phare Bleu after a good 30 minute or so briefing. Tours vary, but most paddle out near Hog Island.

42. Deep-Sea Fishing (Leave From St. George)

Grenada has some excellent fishing opportunities. Sailfish, marlin, tuna, mahi-mahi and barracuda are just some of the many fish you could hook into! If you’re an avid fisherman or woman, you’ll want to check out the Billfish Tournament which takes place each year in January.

But either way, if you’re interested in a fun day at sea with a professional, safety-oriented, fun crew, contact Frank, the owner of the Oceanus. We went on a 6 hour trip with this Grenadian owned and operated company, and highly recommend it.

43. Concord Falls (St. John)

There are actually three waterfalls here. The first is easily reached, while the other two require a bit of a hike through gorgeous scenery. It’s about 45 minutes to the second fall. This is a great place to spend the day, pack a picnic.

44. Mt. Moritz Breakfast (St. George)

This breakfast is held on the last Sunday of each month. Many local foods are on offer and there’s music as well. It’s a well-attended event and there’s lots of seating and parking.

45. Saturday Morning Grenada Market (St. George)

If you’re looking for some fresh fruits and veggies, this is the place to come on Saturdays! Located right in the center of St. George’s, just one street back from the Grenada fish market.

46. Mount. St. Catherine (St. Mark)

At 840m (2,760ft), this is the highest point on the island. Mt. St. Catherine is actually a stratovolcano and the youngest of the 5 volcanoes that Grenada is comprised of. You can hike up to the top, but you’ll need to take a guide. Tours are available out of Victoria, or you could arrange it in St. George’s.

47. Magazine Beach (St. George)

This is one of the best beaches in Grenada. You’ll be sharing the beach with the guests of the Rex Grenadian hotel and Maca Bana Villas, but it’s still pretty quiet. At the southern end of the beach is the Aquarium Restaurant which has an awesome Sunday BBQ, or bring your own food and drinks to the beach. You can snorkel here as well if you have your own gear.

48. Lake Antoine (St. Patrick)

This shallow crater lake is a great place for bird watching. There’s a trail that circles it as well. Bring some food and spend a couple of hours chilling out.

49. Grenada Fish Market (St. George)

A great place to find fresh fish! Snapper, barracuda, mahi-mahi and more are on offer. Shore fishing in Grenada is quite popular, but to haul in these big fish, these fishermen will be out on their boats. Prices are about $8EC ($3) / pound. Even if you’re not interested in purchasing anything, it’s an interesting and bustling place to visit.

50. Black Bay Beach with Amerindian markings (St. John)

About a 20-minute hike from Concord off the main road is this secluded beach. There’s also a cave here with Amerindian markings inside.

51. Dougaldston Spice Estate (St. John)

Learn about various spices while on tour at this 600-acre nutmeg plantation. This is a non-working spice factory now, but you can still visit to see the old buildings and machinery and get a glimpse of what a working plantation might have been like in its hey-day.

52. St. George’s Anglican Church (St. George)

This church was built in 1825, but suffered during Hurricane Ivan. This church has no roof, but a bell, clock tower, some stained glass, and tiled flooring remains.

53. National Museum (St. George)

This building has been a lot of things in the past – French Barracks, a prison, two different hotels and a warehouse. In 1976 the museum was established. The sections here are: Slavery, First Inhabitants, Plantation Economy, Whaling & Fishing Archaeology, and Early Transport & Technology. You’ll also find Carib and Arawak artifacts here. For history buffs, this is one of the things to do in Grenada that you won’t want to miss.

54. Drive Around the Island

This is a must-do when in Grenada. You’ll probably get lost a couple of times as there aren’t many road signs, but just pull over and ask someone where you’d like to go! Get a good map, bring some food and enjoy the day. We recommend having a picnic up near Bathway Beach. Car rentals cost around $50 / day, but once you have a car it’s easy to tick many items off your list of things to do in Grenada.

55. Creole Shack Restaurant (St. George)

Just down the street from the Fish Market, this restaurant serves up local, buffet-style food. The cost of the meal is based on weight. There’s a bar here, lots of seating, both inside and out. The food is really good and the cost is not too bad either. (Update 2020: This restaurant is now permanently closed.)

56. Go Bowling (St. George)

This is one of the newer things to do in Grenada. Lavo Lanes are on the road to the airport, and they have about 8 lanes for bowling. Upstairs and the rooftop terrace are more of the party areas, complete with a bar and oftentimes, live music. If you’re wondering what to do in Grenada when it’s raining, this is a good idea. 57. Le Phare Bleu (St. David)

The actual Le Phare Bleu is a marina, restaurant and boutique hotel. The surrounding area is residential and is a great place for walking. Try to find your way down to one of the little beaches!

58. Golfing at Grenada Golf & Country Club (Grand Anse/St. George)

You can play 9 holes ($20USD) or 18 holes ($30USD) here. The cost of a caddy and club rental is on top of the initial cost. The views of the Caribbean Sea from the greens are stunning.

59. Visit Carriacou & Petit Martinique

The island country of Grenada actually consists of 6 smaller islands, as well as the largest island, Grenada. The sister isles of Carriacou and Petite Martinique are really the only other two islands you’ll hear about. You can take the Osprey Ferry to visit these islands (about a 2-hour journey from Grenada to Carriacou), fly with SVG Air, or you can take a sailboat for a journey up the Grenadine chain with Savvy.

60. Listen to Steel Pan Music in Grenada

Listening to steel pan bands while in Grenada is a must. The sound is incredible, the vibe is great and the music will make you want to dance. You can find the music at Prickly Bay on certain nights, Friday nights at Savvy Beach Cabana, during Carnival season and at the Spice Basket as well.

61. Pure Grenada Music Festival (St. George)

April 2016 was the debut of this music festival and it’s been going on every year since! In fact, it was listed by Billboard Magazine as a top 7 must-see festival in the Caribbean. The venue is the grassy area at Port Louis Marina, and the entire production is top-notch. The stage, sound, vendors, and performers all come together to create this incredible event.

2018 had three different music nights: Soul, Reggae & Caribbean, with top international artists such as Daley from the UK, Chrisette Michele, and Morgan Heritage from the USA, Jah9 and Protoje from Jamaica, Alison Hinds from the UK/Barbados and numerous Grenadian performers as well!

61 Fun Things To Do in Grenada (2020 Edition)

The island of Grenada in the Caribbean is a true jewel. There are numerous things to do in Grenada, but there isn’t a lot of information online about this tiny island nation. We’ve lived here for over 3 years, so we know lots of things to do in Grenada and this blog has more information than any other online today.

The Isle of Spice is located just far enough south to avoid the tourism masses that the northern islands see, yet it’s still easy enough to travel to Grenada on a cruise ship or a direct flight from North America. There are so many things to do in Grenada, you could spend a year and never be bored!

If you’re wondering what to do in Grenada during your trip, I’ve got you covered. Here is my list of 61 awesome things to do in Grenada:

1. Try “Doubles” (St. George) – one of the best things to do in Grenada for foodies

Doubles are a delicious breakfast found in the southern Caribbean and while they’re originally from Trinidad, they’re so delicious that they make our list of things to do in Grenada.

A sweet and spicy chickpea curry is wrapped inside of a soft bara bread. Latta makes the best ones on the island, and you can find her serving doubles out of the back of her orange van on Wall Street in Grand Anse. Update: Latta and Frank’s van isn’t orange anymore! They have a newer dark van, but they are still there.

2. Grand Etang National Park (St. Andrews)

This beautiful, lush park is set high in the mountains of Grenada. At 1,900ft, this is the perfect spot to escape the heat and enjoy nature. With waterfalls, a lake and endless walking trails, Grand Etang is a place you could return to again and again. Visiting this National Park is one of the top things to do in Grenada for sure.

3. La Sagesse Beach (St. David)

*Note: as La Sagesse is often quite quiet, be mindful of your belongings and your safety when on this beach.

4. Sunsets at La Luna (St. George)

Sunset at Laluna is a real secret on the island! Even the locals don’t know about the half-price drinks, so you won’t likely find this on any other list of things to do in Grenada.

8. Hashing: One of The Most Unique Things To Do in Grenada (Island Wide)

The Hash House Harriers are a social running/walking group that meet every Saturday. Someone sets up a trail around the island (usually about 2 hours long) and the runners/walkers follow piles of shredded paper until they reach the finish line. The starting and finishing point is typically at a rum shack! It’s a lot of fun and a very unique thing to do in Grenada.

Fun Note: Hashing is one of the best things to do on Grenada because you can become a part of a pretty cool community with loads of locals, expats, students and tourists on the island.

9. Scuba Diving

The diving around Grenada is stunning. This island isn’t really known for being a diving destination, but with the first Underwater Sculptures in the world, shipwrecks and coral that has been virtually untouched, it really should be more popular. 10. Friday Bonfire & BBQ (St. George)

This is one of the best things to do in Grenada on a Friday night. If you like bonfires, s’mores, steel pan music and BBQs (and who doesn’t?!), head to the Savvy Beach Cabana, which is one of the best restaurants in Grenada.

For dessert, relive your childhood by toasting a marshmallow on the beach bonfire to create your own s’more, complete with graham crackers and a square of Grenadian chocolate.

Insider Tip: Many guests assume that the side dishes are served in hollowed out coconut shells, but they’re actually made from calabash – impress your server with your island knowledge!

If you’re looking for something to do in Grenada on Saturday afternoons, look no further! For only $10 USD you can enjoy a steak lunch with french fries, salad, and a cold beer!

45. Saturday Morning Grenada Market (St. George)

If you’re looking for some fresh fruits and veggies, this is the place to come on Saturdays! Located right in the center of St. George’s, just one street back from the Grenada fish market.

46. Mount. St. Catherine (St. Mark)

At 840m (2,760ft), this is the highest point on the island. Mt. St. Catherine is actually a stratovolcano, and the youngest of the 5 volcanoes that Grenada is comprised of. You can hike up to the top, but you’ll need to take a guide. Tours are available out of Victoria, or you could arrange it in St. George’s.

This shallow crater lake is a great place for bird watching. There’s a trail that circles it as well. Bring some food and spend a couple of hours chilling out.

50. Black Bay Beach with Amerindian markings (St. John)

About a 20 minute hike from Concord off the main road is this secluded beach. There’s also a cave here with Amerindian markings inside.

51. Dougaldston Spice Estate (St. John)

Learn about various spices while on tour at this 600 acre nutmeg plantation. This is a non-working spice factory now, but you can still visit to see the old buildings and machinery and get a glimpse of what a working plantation might have been like in its hey-day.

52. St. George’s Anglican Church (St. George)

This church was built in 1825, but suffered during Hurricane Ivan. This church has no roof, but a bell, clock tower, some stained glass and tiled flooring remains.

57. Le Phare Bleu (St. David)

The actual Le Phare Bleu is a marina, restaurant and boutique hotel. The surrounding area is residential and is a great place for walking. Try to find your way down to one of the little beaches!

58. Golfing at Grenada Golf & Country Club (Grand Anse/St. George)

You can play 9 holes ($20USD) or 18 holes ($30USD) here. The cost of a caddy and club rental is on top of the initial cost. The views of the Caribbean Sea from the greens are stunning.

59. Visit Carriacou & Petit Martinique

The island country of Grenada actually consists of 6 smaller islands, as well as the largest island, Grenada. The sister isles of Carriacou and Petite Martinique are really the only other two islands you’ll hear about. You can take the Osprey Ferry to visit these islands (about a 2 hour journey from Grenada to Carriacou), or you can fly with SVG Air, or you can take a sailboat for a journey up the Grenadine chain with Savvy.

61. Pure Grenada Music Festival (St. George)

April, 2016 was the debut of this music festival and it’s been going on every year since! In fact, it was listed by Billboard Magazine as a top 7 must-see festival in the Caribbean. The venue is the grassy area at Port Louis Marina, and the entire production is top-notch. The stage, sound, vendors and performers all come together to create this incredible event.

2018 had three different music nights: Soul, Reggae & Caribbean, with top international artists such as Daley from the UK, Chrisette Michele and Morgan Heritage from the USA, Jah9 and Protoje from Jamaica, Alison Hinds from the UK/Barbados and numerous Grenadian performers as well! Grenada is one of the most jam-packed islands (or countries) that we’ve ever come across. For such a small nation, it really does pack a lot of punch. There are many more things to do in Grenada that I could add to this list, but I don’t want to give away all of our secrets…

7 Best Beaches in Grenada: A Travel Guide

Grenada is blessed with beautiful beaches, many of which are blissfully devoid of people. You can literally have the best Grenada beaches all to yourself!

All of the beaches on the island are public, and with over 45 of them dotting the coastline, you’ll definitely find a beach to suit your style. There are numerous things to do in Grenada, but naturally, visiting a beach is a highlight of any trip to the Island of Spice.

In this guide, I’ll share some of the top beaches in Grenada, in no particular order.

We’ve revisited all of these Grenada beaches recently and this article has been updated in December, 2019. I’ve included new bars and restaurants on the beach (where applicable), changed the rating of various hotels and removed some (where applicable), and added any new activities that can be done on each beach. Enjoy!

1. Grand Anse Beach (definitely one of the best beaches in Grenada)

Location: Southwest, St. George’s Parish, Grand Anse Area

Water: Clear, Calm, Safe for Swimming, Caribbean Sea

Sand: White, Soft

Activities: Snorkelling, Kayaking, SUP, Sailing, Swimming, Eating, Drinking, Chilling

Let’s start with the star of Grenada’s sandy stretches. This is the main beach on the island, and the most popular. At over 3 kilometers long and lined with almond trees, this is a hotspot for both locals and foreigners.

The water here is safe for swimming and it gets deep fairly fast, meaning you don’t have to go out too far before you’re submerged in cool water.

For activities, you can go scuba diving or snorkelling, rent a kayak, drink rum at one of the beach bars, or just chill out on your towel. We recommend scuba diving and snorkelling with Dive Grenada. You can check out the reviews on TripAdvisor and our review of the dive center, here.

After enjoying the day at one of the best beaches in Grenada, grab yourself a drink and some food at one of the many restaurants and bars lining the beach. Check out Umbrellas Beach Bar, 61 West, Savvy Beach Cabana (which is a part of Mount Cinnamon Grenada), Esther’s Bar and Coconut Beach Restaurant.

Coyaba Beach Resort

This beach resort is located directly on Grand Anse Beach! The grounds are lush and green, the staff is friendly, and the reviews here are very positive. You really cannot beat this location. Rating from Booking.com: “Superb” 9.3 / 10

Mount Cinnamon Resort

This beach resort is located on a cliff overlooking one of the top Grenada beaches, Grand Anse. The view and breeze from here are lovely. Just a quick walk down a path will bring you to the private beachside area with lounge chairs. A pool, tennis court and kayaks are available for guest’s use. An onsite scuba and snorkel center is attached as well.

2. La Sagesse Beach

Location: Southeast, St. David’s Parish

Water: Typically Clear (unless it’s raining), Safe, Usually Calm, Atlantic Ocean

Sand: Very Fine, Soft, Golden

Activities: Relaxing, Swimming, Kayaking and Boogie Boarding (depending on waves)

La Sagesse Beach is located in a beautiful, protected cove. The water here is very clear and the sand is impossibly soft! There is only one hotel with an attached restaurant on this beach, so you will find lots of peace and quiet here.

When you think of what the beaches in Grenada would look like, palm trees and sandy shores probably comes to mind. While many of Grenada’s beaches lost their palm trees during Hurricane Ivan in 2004, La Sagesse was able to retain many of them.

The beach is backed by palm trees, and there is a freshwater river connecting to the sea — if there has been a lot of rain, the muddy river water will make the sea a bit cloudier.

On the weekends, there are many Grenadians here enjoying the beach with their friends and families. Beach chairs and kayaks are available to rent and the food at the restaurant is very good.

La Sagesse Hotel, Restaurant & Beach Bar

La Sagesse is the only hotel located on the beach with the same name. This is a great hotel for those looking for a peaceful, serene getaway. The hotel is small and the staff are friendly. Kayaks, boogie boards, and lounge chairs are provided complimentary to guests. TripAdvisor gives a rating of 4.5 / 5 stars.

3. Magazine Beach

Location: South, St. George’s Parish

Water: Clear, Turquoise, Safe for Swimming

Sand: White, Soft

Activities: Swimming, Snorkelling, Dining, Relaxing

Magazine Beach is one of the best beaches in Grenada for Snorkelling. This beach is located close to the airport and is not only good for snorkelling but swimming as well.

There are boulders at the far end of the bay near the Aquarium Restaurant to the south, and to the north of the beach is the Grenadian by Rex Resorts. (Update 2019: The Grenadian by Rex Resorts has been sold and completion of the rebuild by The Royalton is set for March 2020).

This beach is always quiet. Bring a picnic lunch unless you’re wanting to splurge — the Aquarium Restaurant is a bit expensive (except for the Sunday afternoon BBQ!). Magazine Beach is a great place to spend the afternoon…or longer.

Looking for a hotel Magazine Beach? There are two options:

Royalton Grenada

Located at the northern end of Magazine Beach, the Royalton is a chain of luxury resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico. This new, all-inclusive resort is set to open March, 2020.

Located at the southern end of Magazine Beach, high on the cliff, Maca Bana sure knows luxury! Each villa has air conditioning, a private balcony and a full kitchen. With such incredible views, you may never want to leave your room. Booking.com rating: “Superb” 9.2 / 10

4. Morne Rouge Beach (BBC Beach)

Location: South / Southwest, St. George’s Parish

Water: Glass-Calm, Clear, Safe for Swimming

Sand: Soft, White

Activities: Drink at Plywood Bar, Kayak, Swim, SUP

This beach is arguably as nice as Grand Anse Beach, which is its neighbour to the north. Morne Rouge is called BBC Beach by the locals, so if you’re asking for directions, ask for BBC! You can easily walk here from the Grand Anse area.

This bay offers very calm, shallow water in a protected cove. We’ve only seen waves here once in 3 years, and that was during a storm surge.

There are lounge chairs available for rent, and three bars / small restaurants. This is one of the best beaches in Grenada if you want to enjoy a relaxed day at the beach.

Kalinago Beach Resort

Located directly on Morne Rouge Beach you’ll find this beach resort. There are 29 beachfront rooms and an outdoor pool with a swim-up bar. Here you can speak to locals about the traditions of Grenada, and learn about the history of the island. TripAdvisor rating: 4 / 5 stars.

5. Petit Bacolet Bay

Location: South / Southeast, St. David’s, Westerhall

Water: Clear, Sometimes Wavy, Safe

Sand: Black, Soft, Fine

Activities: Swim, Fish, Suntan, Walk

This beach is basically unknown. We’ve been here about seven times and have only ever seen two fishermen. The property backing the beach has recently been bought up and turned into sugar cane plantations, and the jungle access has now been declared “Private Property”.

So, the way to get to this beach is from neighbouring Grenada Marine/Laura’s Restaurant. There is a walk that will take you over the point from the bay at the marina/restaurant, which will bring you to the next beach over.

We’ve dubbed it “Driftwood Beach” because there are loads of incredible pieces of washed-up wood on the sand.

Can you see why we call it Driftwood Beach?

There is literally nothing on the beach so make sure to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and food. Depending on which time of day you arrive, there will be some shade as well. Due to its black colour, the sand (and sea) here can get quite warm.

The water is usually wavy, but we have never seen or experienced any currents or riptides, just safe waves. Still, don’t venture out farther than you can stand.

At the far northern end of the beach, there is some sort of ruin built into the cliff – check it out.

6. Hog Island

Location: Offshore, South, Lower Woburn Area

Water: Shallow, Clear, Safe

Sand: White, Soft

Activities: Swimming, BBQ, Hiking

Hog Island is an excellent place to spend the day. There is no development on the island except for a small rum shack/bar owned by Roger, called Roger’s Barefoot Beach Bar. On the weekends, there is a BBQ here, and after 5:00pm on weekdays, beers and other drinks are for sale.

The island is a popular mooring area for sailboats, so naturally, the beach will typically have yachties and sailors hanging out on it. Weekends are the busiest because some of the boat tours stop off at Hog Island around 1:30pm and stay for a couple of hours.

It’s best to visit on a weekday if you have the option.

To get here, take a boat from around the Whisper Cove area, or ask around at Nimrod’s bar in Lower Woburn. If you would rather arrive by vehicle, you can drive a very bumpy dirt road from the Grand Anse Valley area (which has a Mt. Hartman Dove billboard at the entrance) until you arrive at the bridge connecting the island to the mainland. From here, you must walk in.

Our two favourite options are to sail here from Port Louis Marina with Savvy Sailing, or to walk here along the path from Secret Harbour Marina (which is quite hot during the day, so make sure you leave early). Click here to read our review article from our time aboard the Savvy.

Relaxing in front of Rogers Bar

Hiking up and over the island offers fantastic views of Calivingy Island and of the sea…make sure to go for a walk, the interior of the island is beautiful, and the shoreline offers mangroves and bird sightings. Hog Island offers one of the best Grenada beaches for “liming”.

7. Levera Beach

Location: North in Sauteurs

Water: Clear, Wavy, No Swimming

Sand: Golden

Activities: Picnic, Turtle Watching, Walking

Levera Beach is located at the Northern part of the island. This is a beautiful, natural spot which is great for stopping off for a picnic on the beach. There is usually a security guard here, so although the beach may be secluded, it’s a safe place. Regardless, never leave any valuables in your car, and lock the doors.

From April 1st – June 30th, Leatherback Turtles can be seen coming up on shore to lay their eggs in the sand! This is a spectacle you won’t want to miss. The best time to see the turtles nesting is at night and with a local guide. Or, if you can volunteer with the Leatherback Turtles.

Just nearby is the Levera National Park where you can go for a nice walk through the mangroves, spot some birds, and check out the Levera Pond as well. Offshore are the islands of Sugarloaf, Green and Sandy, and on a clear day, you can spot Carriacou Island. Swimming is not recommended here due to undertow and currents.

This hotel is located near the city of Sauters at the northern end of the island, and around 3 kilometers from Levera Beach. This is a great place to stay, especially if you want to see the turtles nesting at night. At the hotel, you’ll find a beautiful beach, a pool, a restaurant and a gym. Pack Your Bathing Suit!

Grenada beaches are unlike anywhere else in the world. The island’s jagged coastline offers wonderfully secluded stretches of sand. Many of the beaches here are backed by lush greenery and are surrounded by rocky points. Some of the beaches are easily accessible, while others you need to go on a bit of an adventure to find.

This list was in no way an extensive breakdown of the best beaches in Grenada — I had to keep some of my favourite spots a secret! Come to the Isle of Spice and discover your own private plot of sand, there are many coves and beaches just waiting to be found.
