Uncle Scrooge: The Secret Santa Spell Review (comission by WeirdKev27)

Happy Holidays all you Happy People. It's that time of year again, time to haul out the holly and the breadcrumbs because we're talking about ducks again. Yes while I haven't talked about ducks nearly enough on this blog as of late, finding a Ducktale for christmas has always been a priority.

This year though Kev took the reigns on this one after realizing this was a tradition, and found me TWO. We were originally going to do the darkwing duck christmas special, something I didn't know existed and still know little about on purpose and still plan to next year.. but then... he found this. See back in 2021 I reviewed the Carl Barks comic a letter to santa. You can find the review here.

But the main takeaway is it features THIS iconic scene

Look saying i'm a simple man would be a boldfaced lie, but sometimes it's the simple things like an absurdly rich duck and his nephew fighting to the death with heavy machinery so one of them can give their nephew's the remaining machine as a christmas present that bring me joy on this holiday season.

That said after years of basking in the warm glow of having randomly found a comic about Scrooge and Donald battling to the death with steam shovels, I found something just as holly jolly.. and just as gloriously, wonderfully nuts. My friends it's time I introduced you to the Secret Santa spell.

Again Kev, my producer of sorts, deserves the credit here: he found this in Disney Christmas Parade, IDW's christmas anthology they printed every year for a while, and god bless him for it as this story is gold. It's a genuinely good, well done Magica story that thanks to taking place on christmas and involving a claus somehow less thought out than the one where if you kill Santa you become Santa, figgy pudding, a murder tree, and a volcano finale, is also completely bonkers and I love every second of it. This is a geninely fantastic scrooge story and one worth taking a look for yourself if you can find it online since it's out of print. For those of you who can't or simply don't wanna, come with me under the cut as we explore the hap happiest christmas since bing crosby tap danced with danny fucking kaye while Donald and Scrooge tried to pummel each other with steam shovels.

This story comes to us from writers Fransico Artibani, Lello Arena and artest Silvio Cambolli. I hadn't heard of any of these people before this as i'm not really up on my itallian duck comics but they do an excellent job here and I certainly will be looking out for more of their stories.

For this story we open at the bin a few days before christmas as everything's winding down for the holiday and Donald's doing one of his last bits of slave labor for Scrooge when two Scottish obviously suspcious carollers show up. Scrooge apparently gets so many that both are and aren't villians in disguise he's worked up a bit of an extreme solution.. granted he wanted to just pour oil on them but then legal got involved.

So he has to go with the Virtuetron 3000, an elaborate setup he had gyro work up that puts MIND READING HELMETS

Yup i'ts magica.. I mean I can't blame Scrooge for being suspcious, turning her shadow into a teenager to sneak into the mansion only for said teenager to fall in love with scrooge's daughter, this ain't, but i'm less concered with Magica and Co's half baked scheme and more concered a man who underpays his employees, quite literally owns the town, and already has a fairly sketchy moral compass has MIND CONTROL technology.. and giant killer robots

Scrooge did all this so he could have a restful christmas. Magica.. isn't having the same as she has some uninvited guests.

Okay so some introductions are in order as i'm sure some of you had the same reaction I did

Thankfully Inducks also indexed who they are. Starting with the one I DID recognize, the little tyke is Magica's niece Minima, the basis for Lena and Magica's exact oppisite: kind, selfless, cheery. The only thing she isn't inverted on is magical talent, as Minima has a knack for it.

The two strangers are Rosolio and Gramma DeSpell. Yes GRAMMA, that's magica's grandma. What's intresting is there's two distinct versions of the character that don't really contradict each other, with this one in the 90's becoming a bigger fixture, and there being nothing to say this isn't the same character given a Sabrina the Teenage Witch style makeover, just a few years BEFORE Zelda and Hilda's got there's in fact. Go figure. She's a bit of a hippie and tries to talk down Magica from her schemes.

Her sidekick here, and sexual harasser, is Rosolio, a mildly inepet magician who followed her from italy to hit on her.

So Magica's about ready to just abandon her magic shop and go.. fuck off or whatever when Minima innocently brings up something...

Yes folks, this is indeed our premise: Santa put in a clause in his magic that's somehow weirder than "If tim allen shoves you off a room tim allen become santa claus" or "If tim allen dosen't find a wife in time he ceases to be santa claus" or.. let's just say anything tim allen adjacent. If you wish for something seven times and happen to be some sort of spellcaster, you get it, regardless of morality, intent or what it actually is. Which DOES mean good news for one little boy man robot

But still raises a LOT of questions. It's not a bad concept, that asking for something enough means santa will take pity but why isn't their restraints? Why has Magica, someone Santa would objectively not liked asked 7 times? why have we only heard about a magic version of the junior woodchuck guidebook this once? why didn't we get a fourth season of ducktales so Frank could adapt this? These are the things that keep me up at night. This is also a thing that keeps me up at night.

Donald just admit you need glasses instead of taking it out on your children, for all our sakes!

So Magica goes to the north poll to deliver letter 7 personally while Gramma.. only stops Rogoilo from going with her then hopes she'll be okay.

Magicia isn't as an elf being pulled by a sleigh full of pengys and getting there late notices her. Honestly we wouldn't have this plot at all if the best boy pengy wasn't busy.

Magica is frozen solid and is revived by 30 cc's of hot chocolate. I don't know if Tom Hanks sang to her, he was also busy that christmas

Magcia repays this kindness by busting up the north poll, going on a rampage to find Santa since the elves handle letters. Keep in mind this ENTIRE act of the story, her getting frozen, her going on a rampage, her bringing an evil dead tree to life before fighting an army of teddy bears and snowman

YUP. You didn't think the insanity stopped at mind policing, killer robots, santa clauses and improperly placed penguins did you? Nope we get a full on offscreen lord of the rings battle complete with ents simply because Magicia wants to gloat in person. And despite this section being padding.. it works. of COURSE magicia would want to gloat to santa, of COURSE she coudln't wait for Christmas day. It's totlaly in character and her singing oh christmas tree or spitting out hot chocolate are just.. such nice character touches. Of course she's so dedicated to being evil she hates something sweet. OF COURSE.

It's something neat about this comic: i'ts bonkers, no question.. but it's also simply fantastic on it's own merit. The idea of Magica getting a santa wish is neat on it's own, but the story then uses Minima to anchor it: she's frustrated it seems her aunt will never be happy and always obess over the dime, and thus teleports to the bin to take it from her, not understanding WHY it's precious to scrooge or WHY her aunt wants it, simply wanting to make her aunt happy. No one even knows; the thought police helmet's don't scan ill intent.. because there isn't none. It's just an innocent child wanting to bring her Aunt christmas. This version of Minima reminds me a LOT of 87 webby, and it's in the best way: innocent , kind, selfless.. all the good things.

Anyways Santa finally goes to confront magica, wondering why she's doing this the answers no.. and forgetting his own stupid policy until it's too late, with her asking for the dime and him entering a trance to go get it.

It's christmas eve and Scrooge is bored as nothing's going on. Disturbingly he wants to know how litigatoins are going. Those orphans aren't going to be forced out into the snow themsleves, ghosts of past buisness partners be dammned!

Scrooge is interuptted from taling to Mrs. Quackfaster byt he arrival of santa. Thinking it's magica in a disguise , he sicks a robot guard dog on her he turns into a sheep.

But then we get the crowner, the weirdest, best, and most wonderful thing in this story.. I present...

I"ll level with you all, while holiday shopping was easy this year, i've still been dealing with a lot of seasonal depression and regular ole depression. It's been a long month with loved ones in the hosptial (nothing serious but also nothing you need to know about in full), work piling up and me not even taking the time to enjoy some of my gifts. I've had plenty of kind people, thoughtful gifts, and wonderful friends but sometimes the stress of this job, as much as I love it, and the world can get to you. So getting to just relax and review a comic where Santa turns Scrooge's bin into a giant figgy pudding while under hypnosis.. it helps> it warms the spirit and reminds me why I do this. For the joy of good stories.. and for the wonder of nonsense.

For those who like me wondered what Figgy Pudding actually even is, wonmder no more: it's a traditional british pudding made out of animal fat. You no doubt have more questions but we have more story

So Santa snaps out of it once he gives Magica the time and she teleports out. Scrooge asks santa to go get it.. but despite you know having TURNED SCROOGE'S BIN INTO PUDDING and stolen his prized possesion, he's .. less than helpful.

I just.. dude... man.. santa dude man claus... Christmas is important. It brigns joy to children and it's why youd o this. I get that. But how does "I need to return the dime I stole while BRAINWASHED due to a stupid bit of magic I never bothered to undo or work up a backup plan for", equate to "greed begats greed'.

For starters the Dime.. isn't just a dime.. and you should know this. Your santa. You know everything about a person, it's your deal. This dime was the first bit of honest money Scrooge ever earned, a reminder of what he started, something he dearly loves and treasures not because it's MONEY but because of what it means. And even not knowing that Scrooge didn't start any of this shit. Scrooge has to constantly ward off Magicia's crap, something you DO for a fact know as you rejected her wish till your dumbass magic kicked in. She's not trying to steal his hoarded gross amount of money, she's trying to take the dime and she's trying to do it for an evil plan. YOU KNOW BETTER SANTA.

Granted this could be a christmastime grift as Santa gets Scrooge to promise a big dinner and bonuses for everyone in duckburg, so he could've simply been fleecing scooge.. and I prefer that interprtation as it fits santa better: Santa would WANT to make up for what he did with magica and WANT to stop her because Santa is a kind, caring person. And even if she hadn't used the santa spell against him, she still attacked his elves out of spite. I prefer to think he would've helped anyway but knew Scrooge deserved to be taught a lesson which, fair play to the big guy.. Scrooge ABSOLUTELY did.

So they go to stop him while Magica goes to show off her dime.. and minima realizes Magica didn't open her present and thus dosen'jt know and is about to make an oopsie.

So Scrooge and Santa go to stop her, but can't... luckily thanks to Minima giving Scrooge a chocolate coin instead of giving her the midas touch, the spell gives her...

It's an excellent brick joke on Magicia hating chocolate, and a great visual. it temproarily makes her the sweetst duck in the world.. which leads to some shipping bait

But a genuinely sweet ending for Minima who, if for one moment and only thanks to magic.. gets to enjoy her aunt. I mean Magica becoming sweet thanks to choclate magic is KINDA Messed up.. but it's hard to not enjoy a child who simply wanted her aunt to be happy.. getting that for one breif moment.

I still feel bad for her as this won't lass, Magicia will be back to her abuse hateful self.. but I can't begrudge a kind, innocent little witch her happy ending. I just don't have it in me. It's not forever, Magicia gets herself back.. but for one day.. she'll treat her family how they deserve. And Rogilo how he really dosen't but you can't have everything now can you?

So because we can't just end on the sweet moment, Santa assures Scrooge the figgy pudding bin will turn back after christmas.. but until then.. he has a promise to fufill.

Every christmas story should end with the whole town eating a rich man's property. Hell EVERY christmas should. Eat the rich's buildings kids!

This story is excellent. Really werid? yes. Having a pretty bonkers ending for no reason? Yes. Is said ending hilarious, the throughline of Minima heartfelt, and the zanier stuff also really funny? Entirely. It's a well done Scrooge story set around christmas with santa's indgiance at helping scrooge being the only thing I really don't like. Had he phrased it less as "you brought this on yourself" and more "you don't deserve it after how you've treated your employees" it'd make more sense. Still one little bump dosen't ruin the figgy pudding.. I think. I don't know how figgy pudding works. I do like this story though and highly recommend it. Thanks for reading.

How about Granny De Spell and Rosolio?

Okay so Rosolio isn't really interesting - he's Caraldina's apprentice and he's in love with Magica. Also he's allergic to Ratface.

Granny/Caraldina/???? is much more interesting.

In the 60s, Magica had a grandmother named "Granny De Spell" or Nonna Amelia in Italian (yeah even though Magica's Italian name is Amelia, idk don't worry about it).

She's a retired witch who taught Magica everything she knows - and obv she's from the canon where Magica and Madam Mim hung out all the time. I don't like thinking about humans in Duckverse so I usually ignore this kind of canon BUT it's fine we're just talking about the big picture

Granny Amelia appears in a bunch of comics, none of which ever came to America but a lot of them have official english translations in Australia. I couldn't find them so idk any details about them but these are also the comics that Samson Hex comes from, he's a (teenage?) apprentice of Magica's:

From what I can tell, Granny Amelia doesn't do much in most of her comic appearances. She's mostly just there for commentary or guidance and she's always in this weird canon with Madam Mim.

Now InDucks and some of the Duck wikias have this wrong, but the blonde "Granny De Spell" / Caraldina that we see in the same comics as Rosolio and Minima is a different character.

She's an Italian creation and a lot more fun and dynamic than Granny Amelia up there, plus she fits better into modern duck comics (where there is no Madam Mim lol). Her comics were mostly from the 90s, though I think she's made a few appearances in the 2000s. Not a lot.

As with Minima, she's cursed (thanks to Magica) and trapped in a magical dimension for 77 days at a time, and is only able to escape for 33 hours each time. She doesn't seem particularly bothered by it, but she guilts Magica about it everytime she sees her.

More recently I assume they dropped the curse concept (or it was lifted) and she just appears whenever she wants. In her most recent appearance, Magica came to stay with her for a bit because of some trial with seven other volcano-themed witches (this comic looks great and I definitely want to scanlate it sometime but of course it's super long lol)

Anyway so these are Magica's two grandmothers. I like to think Amelia De Spell is probably Magica's mother's mother ('cause of being so magically powerful), and Caraldina (who I don't think has ever been referred to in canon as a 'De Spell' and though she's magic, she's not as notable as Amelia)* is Magica's father's mother.

Why is Magica a De Spell, then, you may ask? Well it only makes sense that in witch marriages, men take the women's last names. Especially a name like De Spell, with a history of powerful witches...you don't give up a name like that for marriage.

And we saw in Origins of a Witch that Magica's father was just a normie while her mom was a powerful witch, so I think him taking her last name is sensible.

*I haven't been able to read all of her comics, but the ones I have just call her Granny or Caraldina afaik.

Anyway Magica's grandma history is complicated. The author who created Caraldina specifically said Caraldina is not Amelia, but they're still listed as the same character in a lot of places. But they have literally nothing in common physically or personality-wise, so idk what's up with that.

We could also just consider that they are both Magica's Granny De Spells, from different timelines or canons or whatever. Especially since Granny Amelia is from a canon that doesn't really exist anymore, she's very easy to ignore. But that'd be mean so I'll keep her it's fine.

Mother Nature's second in command. Pegasette was created with the purpose of helping to take care of some tasks in the world after its creator's retirement.

Pegasette is eccentric and has an optimistic way of looking at everything. Unfortunately, she takes jokes and hyperbole too literally. A free spirit, she is smart and curious, always willing to help someone even when not asked.

Role in the Village:

Pegasette rarely stays in the village, as she is too busy to worry about day-to-day living. However, when she is nearby, she helps the village with her abilities. Like helping the farmer in his garden with rain clouds, teaching Papa smurf natural spells, making Clumsy's dreams of flying come true. As time passes in the village, she tries to learn common activities such as cooking, sewing and writing. She does this to feel more alive as a real being and to have some place in society as her former life was lonely and spiritual only.

;Relationship;

Relationship with Mother Nature - Pegasette and Mother Nature have a relationship of mutual respect between them. They have a strong bond, as water is Mother Earth's lifeblood. She does everything to help her creator and make her proud, because mother nature was kind enough to choose her spiritual element just to have a physical body and be a guardian.

Relationship with Willow - Willow shares a mother-daughter relationship with her. As old as her spirit is, Willow still considers her one of her little smurfettes and helps her settle into this new world. Willow took it upon herself to give Peggie a home and love in the first months of raising Peggie, so the two formed a strong bond, sharing the art of natural magic and their knowledge.

Relationship with Handy Smurf - Handy is currently the only Smurf with a romantic interest in Pegasette. He adores her and makes her feel like the most amazing person who ever lived, as well as being one of the smurfs that is trying to teach her everything about the world and the society they live in. His genuine love and fascination for her is apparent in every interaction they share, and she reciprocates his sentiment. Handy doesn't care about his spiritual age, even though that is one of the reasons he is mocked by the other smurfs. The day Handy really won the spirit's heart was when he got the idea to use his jet pack to fly with her, a gesture that made the girl cry.

Relationship with Smurflily -  Smurflily is Pegasette's best friend, the two are like sisters despite their differences. Lily is one of the smurfs who is guiding Peggie through her desire to fit in with a place among physical creatures. Both love training together and share the same love of cooking.

Relationship with Smurfette –  Smurfette has a certain admiration for Pegasette. She feels identified by their similar origins, as well as being physically different from regular smurfs.

- She is specifically responsible for the weather and everything related to water, including animals

-She has the body and appearance of an adult smurf, but since her true form is the water spirit of the planet, her age can be the same as Earth and Mother Nature, approximately 4.5 billion years old.

- After her creation, she had to share tasks with Leaf, leaving Pegasette with the weather and water, and Leaf with the land and nature in general. Pegasette has a neutral relationship with Leaf, as she believes that the fairy is too young to have the greater responsibility of replacing Mother Nature.

- Pegasette gets sick easily, especially with river pollution. When she's like this, the mood is confusing and overwhelming.

- Pegasette is originally a spirit, which means that she has never interacted with anything or anyone and therefore she does not know the customs of the land. This makes her very curious and almost always gets into trouble.

- Despite being older than everyone else, she still obeys Willow and treats her like a wise old woman. - Although her spirit is immortal, her smurf body can die. - She hates being called old.

"Do you want some tea with honey?"

"No, I don't want any buggering tea, Colleen."

Came the snap that she'd been expecting, Cage was well...cagey for the lack of a better term as they were crammed into the bus. Their feet were freezing but their faces were roasting and the only hot water they had came form the electric kettle Helene had the good sense to send in Col's back up bag. A huge cookie and brownie bouquet were in the works for Ms. Starling indeed.

She had had a long night, they all had. She had been in charge of not only ensuring their rider had been set up properly ( it hadn't ) but also stitching Cage into the stage clothes she'd made by hand herself for him and ensuring his mic pack didn't budge. ( It had because he moved just as she was stuffing it into the pouch ) and she felt like she had a cold coming on. Being homesick on top of it all hadn't added to the lovey mood but Cage's snapping at her had set her off.

"PULL OVER!"

She barked, making Herschel their ancient bus driver startle and swerve for a moment before guiding their ancient bus to the left side of the shoulder. Wrenching Cage out of his seat with much protest from him and down the two steps out into the damp foggy night. They were in Eryri not too far from Col's Granny's place in Dyfi Hills.

"You've been in a shit mood all damn tour. Is it me? Have I done something so heinous to you that it's come down to you treating me like this?"

Cage stood there fumbling his hands stuffing his pockets.

"N..no I'm just tired."

"We all are, Cage. Get your head out of your arse and be thankful you've got a team working to keep you the green. This entitled rockstar shit doesn't last and you know it. Remember when you first started and how happy you were to be out here..doing...this? Living. Remember that."

Deep down in her gut Colleen knew Cage had lost sight of where he wanted to go. It wasn't about the music anymore for him, it's was just money.

"It's about the music."

He stuttered as he looked down at her Birkenstock covered feet. He noticed that she had on very warm looking handmade wool socks. She had dressed in earthy neutrals this evening, what she wore had been sturdy and homemade, probably back at the cottage land she shared with Nigel. Or rather, formerly shared with Nigel Craven. He'd heard around that she'd asked him to leave. He wondered how she was holding up. But he didn't dare ask because she'd say she was fine. Mary Colleen Sheehan was always fine even if she was on fire and falling apart.

"It's always been about the music. You just got a little lost."

Offering him her hand he allowed her to lead him back to the van with a small smile.

"Why didn't you punch him, love?"

Herschel enquired to her, his large watery blue eyes looking impossibly large and very owlish behind his spectacles.

"Because I plan on getting him smoked up on some gaid and we'll be good to go. Give a moment."

Cracking open one of the fiddly creaky windows with just enough grace about her to mutter an under breath curse as she pinched her fingers. Settling herself down into the seat and patting the squishy bit of cushion beside her, a beanbag she'd brought along just in case, and smiled opening her leather carry all tote. A certain smell that Cage would always associate with Col wafted towards him as he tried to watch her long nimble fingers grind and steadily pack a tiny bowl in her ceramic pipe. In this moment his friend and de facto manager looked like a forest gnome bundled against the chill and smoking her Gandalf pipe. Passing the pipe and a lighter to him she smiled.

"It'll help your appetite. I know you still get those spells of not wanting to eat."

A narrow glance at her through his dark fringe.

"Nigel told you."

"Yes he did but I'm also not blind you git. Out of practice are we? Put it in your mouth tilt the hot flame towards it and inhale small and slow."

She even mimed it for him with a tiny mirth filled smile. She and Nigel truly were his dearest friends. He missed Charlie Wilbury and he knows Colleen does. His Irish friend had been through hell and back and had come back home to her home country to spend time with her family. America hadn't felt like much of a home after she'd been put on lock down in the compound like house she and Charlie had owned.

'With every beat of my heart. But he'd want us to go on living.'

He heard her in his head as he snuck a look at her as he did as she instructed. The heady sweet heavy scent of brown sugar and burnt rope filled the bus and trailed out the window into the starry night. He watched her reach into her purse once more and pull out a flask.

"This is Minnie's cure all additive to your tea. Especially when it's cold."

Tipping a slug into the awaiting teacup she had perched form her last offer to him and held it out. Herschel had pulled the back onto the road after Maurice had gotten the thumbs up from Col.

"Trade you."

Something about the way that she smelled like lavender honey, cinnamon spice tea and weed made Cage drowsy. He detected a note of Temple Incense in there somewhere too, she always had the cones on her after Charlie passed. Holding out the bowl to her and taking the heavy handled brightly colored Polishware mug he took a sip. He watched as she took a dainty hit and held it before taking a sip of her own directly from the flask. He took a second and then a third sip as she exhaled a plume of smoke that sailed out over her left shoulder.

"God help those poor sheep."

She muttered as she crossed herself and as they shared a look they erupted into a fit of the giggles. Five minutes later Maurice and Colm got in on the fun and an acoustic was brought out. Herschel found himself being entertained all the way Bala. As he listed to Colleen sing along with Colm and Maurice he noticed her light come back. Here she was singing about the Calvary Cross and that bitch called a muse and the rigors of tour life with a smile on her face as if her world hadn't fallen apart just three years before.

This was exactly what Cage had forgotten about, simply living in the moment and being carried by the music.

"I'll help you find your pack", the witch had said, before inviting Ruby into her cottage.

The witch seemed nice.

Just an old woman, unassuming. Small and frail, she walked slowly, a hint of a limp to her stride.

Ruby waited patiently for her, offering a warm smile and a gentle hand to assist her up from her big garden chair. And, as she did so, Ruby thought back on the days she would help Granny up in the morning, before starting their day. And for that moment, she missed that simple life.

The witch — oh, Ruby forgot to ask her name, how rude of her! — was bit odd, sure. A strange sense of humor, and a long, silent stare that traveled up and down Ruby's frame in a way that left goosebumps in its wake.

But she had such a welcoming smile and an adorable accent, Ruby felt strangely safe for a moment, as if invited in for tea by a harmless, lonely grandmother. Maybe it was the trick of seeing Granny in her movements. Maybe it was Ruby herself, her conscient mind stubbornly resisting the old surviving instincts that told her to never let her guard down neat a witch — as innocent as she might seem.

Maybe, she wanted to be polite to the woman she had begged help from. Maybe, Ruby indeed was a stupid, ridiculous, careless girl. Too trusting for her own good.

But then, they stepped into the cottage and the heavy wooden door slammed shut behind them, a sound so loud and final, a brute thud that pushed the wind around.

And before Ruby could turn her body fully to the witch, her muscles froze in place mid-impulse — bones stuck by their joints, feet rooted in the earth.

The witch lifted her tiny, old hand up, and the pale skin glowed faintly with some sort of magic.

A spell. Shit.

Of course.

The cloak was ripped from Ruby's shoulders by an invisible force.

Then, it happened.

Ruby's vision suddenly changed. Colors became brighter, shadows weaker. Her field of view lowered, a few inches closer to the ground, but Ruby could see so much more.

Her back arched and her weight fell forward. When her hands touched the earth, they were paws. And when she breathed in in a gasp, the scents that invaded her were so much stronger than they had been a mere second ago.

Her body had morphed into the wolf, against her will.

"Oh, poor thing!" The witch said, as she summoned the cloak into her hands. Carefully, she folded the large heavy fabric into a neat square. "You're so thin! Have you been eating at all? I could probably pick you up and throw you around!"

Ruby tried to answer, but no voice, no sound could make it out of her throat. Not even a growl escaped her. Her body couldn't react, still stuck in place, limbs were made of steel, too heavy to move.

Even as the witch walked closer in tiny, uneven steps, Ruby had no choice but to stay.

Stay, like a good dog.

And listen.

The witch's hand touched the top of the wolf's head.

"Still, you're big enough that you'll give intruders a scare for me."

She smiled, and her eyes, again, travelled Ruby's body.

"I've been in need of some surveillance for my cottage. You can't trust just anyone that walks by! These are dangerous lands." Her hand followed behind her eyes, sliding down the wolf's large head, over the pronounced spine, her fingers feeling around every bone that stuck out. "You know, folks around here are at war all the time and I can't have just anyone coming in and stealing stuff from me! I've got a business to run! I've got to keep myself fed"

Then, the hand over the wolf's back stopped abruptly in its track.

The witch stepped back, the same small slow steps, until she could take all of the Ruby's form in.

"I've got to keep you fed as well, now!" She exclaimed, "I wouldn't want a malnourished guard dog. How effective would you be then? Not much, I bet" The witch rested her hands on her hips, still scanning every surface of Ruby's body. "You're my pet. You'll take care of me and I'll take care of you."

Before Ruby could sense it, her body moved on its own.

Her legs bent until her belly touched the ground and she laid, like a dog, by the witch's feet.

As if mirroring her, the witch sat down just in front of her.

"I'll need to put you on a diet." The old woman mumbled, talking to herself. "You'll have to change your eating habits, or you won't put on any weight" She said, and her eyes escaped to the side, in thought. "A nice girl like you, helping an old lady off her chair, doesn't seem like the type of wolf that would hunt enough. Without a pack, I doubt you even hunt at all! Oh, my, sweetie! What are you eating to keep healthy? That can't go on like this!"

A second passed, and the witch clicked her tongue. Her eyes returned, quick and wide, to Ruby's thin frame.

"Oh, I know! I'll keep you under a spell!" She snapped her fingers across her chest, leaning forward on her chair. "A different one." She frowned at herself, correcting her track "Another one. This one you're under is just to keep you in your wolf form outside of Wolfstime." She said, beginning to spin her hand in the empty air in front of her. "This second one will help you with your... shyness, so you can finally eat better."

From the tip of the witch's fingers, a colorless wave swirled the air, moving the light around. And with a simple motion of her wrist, the spell was cast, spinning, almost transparent, towards Ruby.

Like a blanket of magic, it felt onto her body and it slowed seeped into her flesh.

As if a spark had ignited the air in her lungs, Ruby felt an old, dormant flame smoldering in her body suddenly spill, spread and consume her bones.

Violently filling her up, a heat and an urgency exploded from within, bringing forth a feeling she thought she had buried deep, to never feel again. Anger.

It made her skin feel tight. Her limbs, dense; her muscles, electric and her entire body, hot.

Restless.

All the while, she felt an overwhelming emptiness grow in her gut, like a black hole that threatened to collapse her inside herself.

A thundering growl tore through her chest, clawing at her throat, filling every space in the small cottage.

Her stomach, pressed to the earth, rumbled and roared.

She was hungry.

Minima the beloved... also Adélia

Adelia De Spell first because she’s super easy: she’s been in one comic and never mentioned in any other comic ever lol

Thank you to @myrskytuuli for doing a lil scanlation of the comic way back when (link) (part 2 link) so that’s a lot less work for me. What do we know about Adelia? She’s Magica’s cousin who made a decision to stop being a witch and be a fairy instead. It’s funny to know that’s a decision someone can just make. Will Matilda or Minima make the same decision? You never know

We also learned that the process of going from a witch to a fairy involves many trials, the last of which is trying to convert another witch into becoming a fairy. Very specific. Part of me thinks Adelia made that up ‘cause she wanted to hang out with her cousin Magica but who knows.

Anyway that’s all we know. She’s trusting and a little airheaded, but the fact that she was born a witch and gave it up as an adult is interesting. It’d be nice to see her again. Also here’s some fun images/dialogue and then I’ll get to Minima under the cut:

anyway MINIMA TIME! Minima De Spell:

Minima is interesting. She was created specifically for DuckTales 1987, but then they never got to include her in the show, just in the one DT87 comic. But it’s funny ‘cause Magica had a number of young nieces and nephews that they could’ve used instead of making up a new one, but (shrug)

I think Minima might be the only DuckTales cartoon creation that was notable enough to become canon in the comics?? Don’t quote me on that tho

I’ll start with her DT87 comic appearance even though it has zero relevance to her characterization in the regular comics. Minima doesn’t seem to be very close to Magica, only staying with her temporarily while her mother (a sister/sister-in-law/cousin/fellow witch of Magica’s?) is busy. She befriends Webby and then tries to use Webby to get Scrooge’s dime, but then realizes she likes Webby too much to do it. It’s very cute, reminds me of Weblena.

Overall, here Minima is loyal to Webby and doesn’t care much about Magica’s life goal. She gets bullied by her peers and has magic powers but they’re not super powerful.

THENNNNNN four years after that was published, Minima made her first Topolino appearance! Funny enough, her original comic was never translated into Italian, so this was her first appearance in Italy. Also the first appearance of Magica’s not-fiancé and her granny’s apprentice, Rosolio Rhododendron. 

There was a couple of comics between 1995 and 2002 where Minima/Granny De Spell/Rosolio showed up and caused mayhem for Magica, but Minima’s presence in them is...minimal. She likes Ratface and she plays pranks and is a very silly kid. Also kind of a bit sadistic towards the poor bird. More interesting than that, Magica apparently put a spell on Granny/Minima/Rosolio where they’re trapped in some magic dimension for 77 days at a time and can only come out every 33 hours (in this screencap it says 333 but later they say 33). They’re doing really well despite this.

anyway so that’s Minima! She definitely likes to torment poor Ratface but she’s also very good at magic and she’s barely experienced any of the human world since she’s mostly trapped in a magic dimension all the time
