Barcelona posee numerosas fuentes de agua potable que, obviamente calman la sed del caminante, pero que adicionalmente embellecen sus calles y plazas. Esta fontana, ubicada en la esquina de carrer de Marina y la Gran Vía de las cortes catalanas es una fuente Wallace. Recibe ese nombre por su origen, el millonario británico Sir Richard Wallace encargó al escultor francés Charles Lebourg el diseño de una fuente, que simbolizara la fraternidad universal entre los hombres, de la cual mandó a hacer cientos de réplicas, que fue regalando a las principales ciudades de Europa, siendo París la primera y la más favorecida en recibir estas fuentes. Barcelona, con motivo de la Exposición Universal de 1888, recibió unas 12, de las cuales hoy en día sobreviven unas 4 o 5, un par de ellas meramente decorativas, pues no cumplen su misión de sumintrar agua al sediento. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ... This fountain, located at the corner of Carrer de Marina and Gran Vía de las Cortes Catalanas, is a Wallace fountain. It receives that name from its origin, the British millionaire Sir Richard Wallace commissioned the French sculptor Charles Lebourg to design a fountain, which symbolized the universal brotherhood among men, of which he had hundreds of replicas made, which he gave away to the main cities in Europe, Paris being the first and most favored to receive these sources. Strolling down Gran Via is like walking through the pulsing heart of Madrid. I was enveloped by the swirl of humanity that thronged its wide sidewalks. This was Madrid at night; alive, vibrant, engaging, pulling at your every sense. Tourists, locals, hipsters and older generations with their shopping bags, drinks, souvenirs, backpacks and purses all mingled together in a frenetic dance. The neon lights of the movie theaters and the buzzing bars illuminated the street lending an electric jolt to the already charged atmosphere of activity. The scents of age-old tabernas, coffee shops and restaurants opening their doors for the night’s crowds wafted through the air mingling with the metallic scents from the city. It was a sensory overload. A visual feast that left me dizzy and exhilarated all at once. Madrid may be a modern metropolis but on Gran Via the ghosts of its past and the vitality of its present collided in a cacophony of life that was simply impossible to resist.
