The Potential of Asian Lois Lane. Pt 1: Girl Taking Over and American Alien, a comparative analysis

Lois Lane has had many iterations over the years. But specifically in the last decade, Lois has been reimagined as an Asian American woman in both the comics and recently in the animated show My Adventures with Superman.

I believe making Lois Asian is a very inspired choice for the Superman mythos! I would like to take a moment to analyze these versions of Lois from an Asian perspective, seeing what works, what doesn't, and what I'd like to see more of. We'll start with the comics first, as MAWS is going to need its own post.

Usual disclaimers: I'm just one Asian perspective, I do not and never will claim to cover every Asian person's opinion on a thing ever. We're not a monolith, we come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. I'm simply a fan who enjoys media analysis and believes it's valuable to have my perspective in this topic. Secondly, this discussion covers the comic run American Alien, which is written by Max Landis. He's an ultra creep and while I think the comic is worth a read for what it is, I leave it up to you whether you'd like to buy the comic. You can always arg-arg-ahoy otherwise.

I'd like to start with Girl Taking Over: A Lois Lane Story written by Sarah Kuhn with art by Arielle Jovellanos. This is a self contained YA graphic novel about a young Japanese American Lois dealing with the ups and downs of breaking into journalism as a career in National City. When her dream internship at Catco gets a corporate take over, Lois seizes an opportunity to write an exposé on a shady art director. But when her story is turned down, Lois does some out of the box things to get the story of marginalized performers shared with the world.

Girl Taking Over is a fantastic story and I happily recommend it to anyone looking for how an Asian American Lois could be reimagined (with fabulous art by Arielle! The fashion especially is on-point). This story isn't just a diverse coat of paint on a Lois Lane story, being Asian informs Lois' experiences and choices. Both she and her frenemy roommate Miki, are ambitious Asian women yet have hidden insecurities where they still made themselves small to their respective white male bosses. They played into model minority in different ways, and it's only by working together that they're able to foster a community for their stories to be told.

Lois and Miki don't just "have a diverse friend group", that friend group is actively being taken advantage of and suppressed by white gatekeepers. By extension, Lois' friends from work find solidarity in each other. Lois looks up to Cat Grant, a Filipina-American journalist, because seeing Cat succeed made Lois feel like her dream as a journalist is possible. I love how Lois' mom (a character so rarely expanded on in DC canon) acts as a voice of comfort for Lois in the story. All these characters feel holistic and whole, going through their own unique struggles.

It's clear from interviews with both the writer and artist that they care for the history of Lois, and saw an opportunity to reimagine her in a way that aligns with her character but also revitalizes her for new readers of color who aren't used to seeing themselves reflected in media. It's taking Lois' ambition and fearlessness and channeling them into the need to be a model minority, and the insecurities that can come from the desire to succeed constantly. It's taking a character historically frustrated by sexism and disrespected by her male peers- including Clark Kent (who got better treatment than her as a man), and expanding her to be a Lois that has to deal with both sexism and racism in the workplace. It's humanizing Lois' excellence into something painfully specific and relatable for many Asian women.

The only thing I feel I want from this version of Lois is... honestly more of her! I want to see what Japanese Lois does when she moves to Metropolis and works at the Daily Planet. I want to see how her experiences in National City informs her adulthood. Girl Taking Over sets up an incredible groundwork for stories to be told in the Superman mythos. How would Lois react to Superman, a fellow immigrant? Would Superman see himself in Lois? Since she's someone who, in the American context, is perceived as the perpetual foreigner? What would their relationship be like? Out of all the Asian Lois' in media we have so far, this Asian Lois' story has the most rich potential in my opinion.

Up next, we have American Alien written by Max Landis. This 7 issue series swaps artists for each issue, as a means of reflecting different milestones in Clark's life. I will be focusing on issues #4, 5, and 7 since those have the most prominent Lois appearances. With that, I'd like to celebrate the artists for those issues: Jae Lee (issue 4), Francis Manapul (issue 5), and Jock (issue 7). All these artists did a fantastic job, their art styles are energetic and fun to look at. Lee and Manapul are both Asian artists (Korean and Filipino respectively) and I love how they draw Lois- who looks undeniably Asian in their art styles.

American Alien is a modern take on the Superman tale. It expands Clark's story to be connected to Batman, Green Lanterns, Green Arrow, and more. We see Clark grow from his days in Smallville to a city boy in Metropolis, coming into his own as Superman. It's a bold and pretty divisive take with some standout story moments. From what I know, this is likely the first time Lois has been reimagined as Asian- and continues to influence Superman media like MAWS (the producer specifically calls out this comic as inspiration).

In issue #4, Clark moves in to his Metropolis apartment and talks on the phone to his mom about "some bigshot guy named Louis Lane". The reader, likely familiar with the Superman mythos, knows Clark is coming in with biases and a preconceived notion of who he considers a promising student reporter. Once we meet Lois Lane however, the comic turns the reader's expectations on their head:

Lois Lane is an Asian American woman (it's not specified what her exact ethnicity is)! This is a fun moment where the comic metatextually challenged the reader's own biases, showing it's not just Clark who had a different idea of who Lois Lane could be.

Lois' introductory panel is my personal favorite part of her characterization in American Alien. Lois proudly stands as a wall of text behind her recounts how she was considered as a winner for the Daily Planet's Charlton Memorial Laureate Program. When asked why she deserves a place on the program, Lois snaps back that the very question itself is loaded. She's listed her credentials and looks professional- so she's either already been rejected and is just being made to "at least had my say" or she's been accepted and is "meant to garnish my success with eloquent affirmation" to which Lois refuses to do either.

This is a great defiant introduction to Lois, showcasing how jaded she is with the way the world perceives her- but is very confident in her self worth as a journalist. By the end of the issue she reaches out to Clark to combine their exclusive interviews into one story to make a big impression on the news. Her words inspire Clark to seize an opportunity to make a big change in the world as Superman.

Afterwards, the comic plays the classic Superman and Lois dynamic straight. Lois is initially suspicious of Superman, but eventually comes around and is inspired to hope through him. There's a great back and forth between the two where Lois' words initially inspire Clark to be Superman, then Clark assures Lois that Superman is probably just a good guy, and when Clark loses hope from a bad day of heroism, Lois gives him hope again. In the end, Lois realizes her love for Clark Kent over Superman and they share a passionate ending kiss.

Overall American Alien nails the Clark and Lois dynamic and understands their relationship. I consider this Asian Lois "just okay". I like that we get to see an adult jaded Asian Lois meet Clark Kent and Superman, and see them get together. Similarly to Girl Taking Over, I'd like to see how this Lois and Clark would play out. My only issue with American Alien's Lois is a sense of missed opportunities.

The writing overall leaves room for plausible deniability over Lois' Asian identity. The artists (particularly Lee and Manapul) are doing the heavy lifting delivering Asian Lois. If she was drawn as a white woman, none of the writing would need adjustment. Sure her introductory panel implies that people judge her based on her appearance- but that could be just sexism instead of the intersectional experience of Asian Lois going through racism and sexism. Clark did assume she was a man after all- it's never specified if he assumed she was a white man. The only thing you'd lose is the metatextual shock value of Lois Being Asian This Time. That's really what this Lois boils down to, initial shock value with no specific writing to follow through. Her marginalization and identity is written broadly enough that it could be attributed to general sexism and womanhood. It's not specific to being an Asian American woman.

However, because of its broadness, there's room for Lois' Asian identity to be built on in the world of American Alien. The story centers Clark's experiences, but I can easily imagine a continuation of the story expanding on Lois'. The basic groundwork is there. I think it's telling that in a comic called American Alien, we get a more diverse Superman cast system. Jimmy Olsen is Black, Lois Lane is Asian- when Clark moves to the city it feels expansive compared to Smallville. It's a world that feels ready to tackle themes of racism if it was ever to continue (and probably in the hands of a writer with that kind of life experience!). In the end, there's room for this Asian Lois to be something special. Clark isn't the only American Alien in American Alien, if you catch my drift.

You can see how Girl Taking Over has a huge piece of what American Alien is missing. The characters aren't just diverse for shock value, they're not an aesthetic change over historically white characters. They have a story to tell that is inseparable from their identities. Whereas in American Alien, the art is doing the heavy lifting with the reimagined diverse characters- Girl Taking Over has both the writing and art carry the representation. Lois can't be changed into being white in Girl Taking Over.

Both of these stories have potential- but if I had the choice to pick which story should continue, it would easily be Girl Taking Over. This graphic novel works for what it is: it makes sense that this is a younger and idealistic Lois that hasn't met Clark or Superman yet. It's a YA book and Lois can absolutely carry a story on her own. What I want as an Asian fan, is for the potential of Asian Lois Lane to be seen through to the point it's considered the definitive version. As of right now, Girl Taking Over is a fun twist on the Lois Lane story. Not something that is seen as inseparable from the Superman mythos. However! If those themes of marginalization and immigrant identity are tapped into for both Superman and Lois Lane? I feel that has the potential to radically strengthen the overall themes of Superman. It's certainly been touched on before.

Superman Smashes the Klan by Gene Yang with art by Gurihiru is a retelling of the Clan of the Fiery Cross arc in the classic radio show The Adventures of Superman where Superman faces off with the Klan who had been terrorizing a Chinese American family. The graphic novel adapts the story to center the Chinese American characters, and makes it a point to show that Superman relates to them. If that dynamic was applied to Asian Lois, that feels like a definitive love story waiting to happen.

The classic two person love triangle with Clark and Lois is that Lois loves Superman and is indifferent to Clark Kent. She thinks Superman is this ideal macho man and Clark is a cowardly fumbling guy at work who rivals her. What happens when you take that dynamic and made it so Lois identified with Superman- the more othering identity? How complicated would that make Clark Kent feel? How would he navigate that when his marginalization isn't always visible? That's a whole new depth to the love triangle we're not used to seeing. I feel so far, none of these versions of Lois have touched upon this potential dynamic. The perpetual foreigner, Lois Lane and the ultimate alien foreigner that is Superman. The jaded city girl meets the alien farm boy who gives her hope. They inspire each other to be more of themselves in a world not ready to accept either of them.

Bloody Hearts (Part 2)

Azriel x Cassian x Rhysand x Reader

Summary: A modern mafia AU.

Warnings: Blood, injury, guns, depictions of graphic violence. Ik this isn’t how hospitals work but just pretend for the storyline that it is.

“What the fuck, Rhys?” Azriel hisses when he catches sight of his fearless leader leaning heavily on Cassian’s side, an arm wrapped around his shoulder. He’s pale, lips beginning to tint the blue shade of the moon, and the man can hear his teeth chattering from across the room.

The dark haired man drops a steel-toed boot to the ground with a thump as he pushes himself up from the large oak desk where he’s been monitoring the cameras. The green shine from the screen glints over the twin guns nestled in the double holster across his strong chest and reflects off of the azure stone set in onyx metal around his neck.

He’s quick to make his way around the desk, hitting a single key on the console as he goes, and the screen floods black. It’s second nature by now, never leaving anything unlocked that he doesn’t want anyone seeing, even if it is his comrades.

Azriel’s footsteps are silent but Rhys’ grunts are not as Cassian helps him lie back on the poker table, crimson already staining the velvet top. The chips dig into Rhysand’s back but he can hardly focus on anything other than the ripping pain in his side. He’d dug the bullet out of his side and had slipped from the hospital before they could get any more information from him, even if his mind was screaming at him to stay, not for his wound, but for the beautiful woman behind the counter.

Cassian’s already off to retrieve the medical kit as soon as Rhys is settled. Azriel slips the knife from its sheath in his boot and doesn’t hesitate to cut through the expensive fabric covering the wound. His golden eyes are sharp, calculating as he moves, flickering over the torn and damp fabric, and then to the inflamed muscle of his torn stomach when he tugs away the bloody material.

Rhys grits his teeth, squeezing his eyes shut as the room spins. He feels as if he’s the ivory sphere twirling around the roulette table as he lies there, letting Azriel poke and prod at the wound he’d been so careless as to get.

“How many times have I told you not to go running around with an open wound?” Azriel speaks softly, his voice a low rumble that’s always comforting, even when it’s a threat to their enemies slipping past his lips. 

“At least I got the bullet out this time,” Rhys grunts back in time for Cassian to hear. He’s carrying the med kit in one hand and in the other, a bottle of triple distilled whiskey, one of the expensive bottles Rhys likes to reserve for his more important guests. 

Now seems as good a time as any to break into the copper liquid.

“Who did this?” Cassian asks, handing off the supplies but keeping the bottle for himself. His voice is rough, wanting to know answers so that he can move his people where necessary, to find out where Azriel can plant his spies. His large frame casts a shadow over the wound when he hikes his foot up on one of the plush chairs, and Azriel tuts, shooing him to the other side so that he can see better. “And why didn’t you call one of us for help?”

Both of his friends have seen Rhys like this on multiple occasions. Not necessarily with bullet wounds, but their leader seemed to be needing stitches more often than he’d like. As head of one of the most notorious mafias in the country, he’s sought after by rivals for power, women for his body, sometimes both. 

It comes with the territory, though, and no matter how many times he scrubs his name from every source he can find, they’ll always know who he is, his father had made sure of that. But it’s no life to live hiding, and now, Rhys supposes that it's no life to live always having to look over his shoulder either.

Azriel leaves to scrub his hands, sharing a look with Cassian as he leaves him to fish for information from their leader, whose arm is thrown across his eyes, the gold light from the chandelier too much for him right now.

“Was it the Oleanders?” he questions, taking a swig of the auburn liquor before helping Rhys sit up for a sip of his own. It burns as it goes down, its aftertaste of copper he can’t quite distinguish is his own blood in his mouth or the drink.

Rhys swallows roughly, the liquor sticky in his throat. “The Oleanders, the Canus’, the fucking Tritons, take your pick, they’re all starting to look the same these days.”

“Well, what the fuck are we supposed to do about that?” Azriel asks as he slides back up to the table to begin threading the needle. His eyes are sharp, focused on his task, shaking his head when Cassian offers him a swig. “We already have every disposable knight out there that we can.”

His friend hisses as the needle pokes through his tender skin. He’ll never get used to the feeling, and he doesn’t want to. 

“Fuck if I know,” Rhys sighs, accepting another drink. “All I know is we need to start playing offense, they’re getting too close.”

A muscle in Cassian’s jaw twitches but he nods nonetheless while Azriel grunts his agreement. The three of them will be up for days trying to plan their next move. They need to think of something to shock the rival gangs, to scare them back into place where they’d been when Rhys’ father was still in charge. A new head meant that all past treaties were over, but Rhysand doesn’t regret it for a minute. Not after what his father had done to his mother and sister.

Azriel is meticulous with his stitching, and Rhys concentrates on the stillness of his hands while he patches him up. It had taken a long time for his friend to be able to show his hands like this, even though the three of them are like brothers. A gambling debt gone wrong had left the apathetic man caught and set alight by the Oleanders, harrowing grins and remarks of how he wouldn’t be able to hold his cards after they’d finished with him haunt him to this day, and Rhysand finds him asleep at him computer more often than not, surveillance screen blaring green light and a gun clutched tightly in his marred grip.

“If we knew who put a hit on you tonight we’d be that much closer to knowing where to start,” Azriel murmurs, tying off the suture and sitting back for a better look at his handiwork. This time, he doesn’t hesitate to take the liquor from Cassian, smearing the label red as he does so.

“Was a drive-by,” Rhys answers, his breathing ragged as he sits up. He makes a face at the scrap of shirt hanging from his shoulders, tugging it off and tossing it to a heap on the ground. It lands with a wet sound but he doesn’t care, they’ve all seen worse.

It makes him think of you, offering to help him out of his shirt with wide eyes and red cheeks. You had made his labored breathing worse, struggling to suck down a miniscule amount of oxygen after your beauty had forced it from his lungs. He wants to see you again.

He hadn’t recognized the large blacked-out SUV that had slowed to a crawl next to him. He’d known immediately and cursed himself for taking his phone call outside, and with no knights to guard him. He was sprinting down the block before the window even rolled a centimeter down, his shiny, expensive shoes sounding like their own bullets ricocheting off of the sidewalk as he moved. 

Bullets sprayed the buildings around him, not a soul in sight. Rhys had managed to dip into an alley and disappear, but after having received the lovely wound in his side in exchange.

It could have been much worse.

“I’ll start looking into security cameras,” Azriel says, wiping his palms down his own shirt. He’s already making his way over to his desk, and Rhys would scold him for being a bloody mess if he hadn’t known his friend as well as he does. That glint in his eye tells Rhys all he needs to know about what Azriel will be doing until he finds the culprit. “Where did it happen?”

“Westboro and 8th,” Rhys sighs, sharing a tired look with Cassian. The both of them know that prying Azriel from the screens will be nearly impossible, and they cheers to that, taking another pull from the bottle.

“You need to be more careful,” Cassian tells him. His hazel eyes are glazed with seriousness, his tone stern and fearful all in one. The corners of Rhysand’s frown soften as his friend's tenderness, agreeing with him in full.

“I’ll make sure you know where I’m going next time,” he answers, gaze sliding over to where Azriel’s already tuned deeply into his work. “The both of you.”

He has his own personal guard, a group of trustworthy men that have passed all of his and his friends’ rigorous vetting processes, but it would be nice if he were able to take a breath alone for a moment. Rhys is sure that both Cassian and Azriel will be flanking his sides once more now that this has happened.

Cassian seems less than pleased with his response but Azriel takes it with a grain of salt, fingers flying over the keyboard in an attempt to find the assholes who’ve done this. He tucks Rhys’ words into the back of his mind for later, already thinking of ideas on how to have more eyes on Rhys without being there himself.

“Shower,” Cassian demands softly, removing the bottle from Rhys’ grip. He saunters over to perch on the edge of Azriel’s desk, watching politely and not touching like Azriel has scolded him on many occasions. The thought makes the corner of Rhys’ mouth curl in amusement, even if he knows that they’ll start murmuring about him as soon as he leaves the room.

But he follows Cassian’s orders nonetheless, sliding from the poker table onto his shaky legs. The room steadies after a few harsh blinks but he stays upright, making sure he has his bearings before he moves towards his suite.

“And try not to get that wound wet,” Azriel calls after him, eyes still pinned to the screen before him.

Rhysand rolls his eyes, ignoring his friends, but his smirk curves into a full blown grin.

Weeks, practically months, later the circus was in yet another new town, entertaining the community and emptying the pockets of the men they serviced. Anna and Sophie were far from home and their past lives were like a distant memory. Just as Jungkook promised, the young brunette was thriving as a main attraction for the show, considered a fearless wonder as she performed with dangerous animals. She was admired by men and hated by women just as a true star shined upon her pedestal, only to be reached by the animal tamer who placed her there. 

It was their first act in the western part of the country and with the additions to the show, the routines had to be rearranged, which bumped Yoongi’s act up before Sophie and Jungkook. Anna burst through the curtain, escaping away from the crowd with a scowl on her face. “Don’t walk away from me.” Yoongi growled, stomping after her and grabbing hold of her wrist to yank her back against his chest.

She narrowed her eyes, prying her wrist from his hand with a jerk of her arm. “You nearly killed me!” Her voice was raised and agitated from his performance that evening. “I’m not doing that again.” She promised, completely fed up with being the prop to his act and the target for his aim.

“If I wanted you dead, I would have done it by now.” He informed her, making sure she understood that he still had the upper hand in their dynamic. “It was all for show, I missed on purpose.”

Over time, Yoongi developed Anna’s talent for balancing an apple on her head using her as a stand while he threw daggers into the core of the fruit and pinning it to the wheel behind her. During this particular show, Yoongi thought it would create tension in the audience if he made an attempt that failed. She slipped away from his hold, walking away to seek solace while Yoongi simply chuckled at her reaction. “Don’t tempt me!” He hollered after her, his maniacal laughter echoing through the rehearsal tent and following her like a shadow. 

At the entrance of the rehearsal tent, Jungkook stepped out from the main arena with a large smile plastered on his face as he gently guided his Asian elephant by a decorated rope. Curled within the large trunk was Sophie, happily perched as she swung her legs with child-like glee. “You did great, kitten.” He encouraged, bringing the creature to a stop to help Sophie down to the floor again. 

Sophie giggled as the elephant straightened its trunk allowing her to slip down the large muscle into the waiting arms of Jungkook. “Don’t forget to treat Mambo. He’s the best.” As they traveled west, Taehyung picked up the Asian elephant along the coastline and gifted it to the animal tamer and his assistant. Surprisingly, despite her hesitation to work with such a large creature, Sophie came to adore the elephant. While Mambo was hardly a domestic pet, Sophie loved him just as someone would a loyal canine. 

Jungkook rubbed his palm along Mambo’s trunk, smoothing his hand over the wrinkles of his tough skin. “Of course, he takes care of you and makes you happy.” It was true since her bond with the animal developed, Sophie devoted her time and energy to the show rather than worrying about the outside world and what she was missing. The sense of purpose boosted her mood and made her much more compliant when Jungkook wanted to have sex.

Anna hummed as she recalled attempting his act upon their arrival, imagining how much strength it required to hold yourself up on such a small block surface balanced on a simple rod. “You make it look so easy.” She bravely commented, watching as Seokjin’s eyes flickered up to find her gaze. His features were pulled together in concentration which seemed to disappear as he dropped back onto his feet, allowing his muscles a momentary break. 

Seokjin often stayed to himself, only ever getting involved in the affairs of the House of Cards when directed to. He was perfectly content focusing on his skills and keeping away from the drama if it allowed him the opportunity to make a decent living. “Years of practice will typically do that.” He commented under his breath, grabbing a rag from beside the thin balance pillars before wiping the chalk from his hands. There was a sense of arrogance, despite the playful tone he allowed his voice to morph into. 

Anna quickly caught onto his prideful demeanor, crossing her arms over her chest as she examined his body. All of the men running the circus had stellar looks and handsome smiles accompanied by alluring bodies. Most women would happily indulge as they drank the temptation of their physiques. 

Seokjin was no short of good-looking, his face radiating charm and elegance, clearly one of the most beautiful faces amongst the man. While Anna knew her time at the circus was against her will, she also didn’t mind engaging in harmless flirting, especially with someone so simple as Seokjin.

Anna’s eyes widened at his confession, surprised that the man took his craft so seriously. She held up her hands in surrender, letting her gaze soften as a flirtatious smile stretched across her lips. “Don’t let me interrupt. Please…” She gestured with her hand for him to continue, knowing that the sight of him practicing was hardly a waste of her time. She’d happily admire the way his body bent shapes all while balancing on one singular palm.

Seokjin moved closer, his breath ghosting on the back of her neck as chills coursed down her spine. “Spread your legs.” Anna’s body instantly became tense as Seokjin moved to stand beside her, his dashing features meeting her eye. “Don’t worry, if I wanted to take advantage of you…I would have by now.” He confessed as a smirk pulled at the corner of his lips. 

Yoongi was typically one to manhandle Anna to place her in the positions he desired in his act. Seokjin was a pleasant change in pace as he slowly guided her. “Easy enough.” She teased, fully knowing his skillset was vastly more impressive than she cared to lead on. 

He chuckled lightheartedly, leaning his elbow against one of the pads of his canes. “Alright, let’s try something else.” He challenged, his eyes drawing her in as he leaned in closer to her. Anna grinned in response before catching the glimpse of a man walking towards them with anger etched across his face. Anna instantly recognized the scowl of Taehyung as his rage radiated off each of his strides. 

Anna quickly moved away from Seokjin as the hand balancer straightened his posture before leaning down to retrieve a piece of chalk, dusting his hands once more. Taehyung glanced over Seokjin, turning his fury onto the brunette who seemed insistent on wasting his time. 

“Yoongi’s looking for you.” He growled, grasping her arm in his grip before pulling her along beside him. “I suggest you stop wasting our fucking time and do your job.” He hissed through his teeth, unapologetically dragging Anna with him. Anna felt the heat of embarrassment flush over her features as she glanced back at Seokjin who was watching the scene unfold. 

Anna pulled her wrist from Taehyung’s hold, keeping up with him to not anger him further. “About that, I was thinking…” Anna bravely began explaining as she picked up her pace so she could turn and walk backward to face the ringmaster. “If you give me a little time, I can learn a new act.” She spoke her words as if they were a hopeless plea, desperate to change her scenery from Yoongi. She was tired of his attitude and dull demeanor. It had been months since she was paired with him as his partner and at this point, she was ready to be with anyone else. 

Taehyung laughed in amusement, his eyes dark as he stopped in his stride to glare at Anna. “What do you think this is?” He chuckled menacingly as he moved forward to tuck a strand of her hair behind her face. “You belong to Yoongi and the men who pay to fuck you,” He reminded her coldly, running his fingertips along her cheek before smacking his palm against the flushed skin. “Know your place.” He snapped bitterly, annoyed to have to spend time listening to her ludicrous thoughts. “Now, be the good little whore and get your ass back to your target.”

Taehyung recently enlightened him about Anna’s interest in changing acts, the notion only infuriating the knife wielder. It was bad enough that he was given Anna as an assistant, now she wanted to leave him for someone else’s company. He let out a sarcastic chuckle, the corner of his lip curling into a snarl as he aimed yet another knife at the brunette trapped before him. 

Jungkook and Sophie became quite the spectacle in the House of Cards. Yoongi stepped forward, latching his hand around her throat to silence her as Anna gasped for air before feeling him constrict against the column of her neck. “Your job is to shut up and get fucked.” He hovered just inches from her face, thankful that her limbs were restricted, allowing him the opportunity to become forceful with her without her putting up a fight. “Doesn’t seem that hard, yet you keep opening your damn mouth.” 

Anna felt the strain of her lungs as she struggled to take in a proper breath, feeling Yoongi loosen his grip on her throat as she gasped for air. Electrical symbols or electronic circuits are virtually represented by circuit diagrams. There are some standard symbols to represent the components in a circuits. This article gives some of the frequently used symbols for drawing the circuits. There are many electrical and electronic schematic symbols are used to signify basic electronic or electrical device. These are mostly we used for draw circuit diagrams.Below are different kind of symbols we mentioned category wise. Hope this information will helps to understand clearly.Wires Switches Sources Ground Resistor Variable Resistor Capacitor Inductors Diodes Transistor Logic Gates Amplifiers Antenna Transformer Miscellaneous WIRES Wires Represents a conductor that conducts electrical current. Also called a power line or electric line or wire. Connected Wires Represents the connection of two conductors. Dot shows the junction point. Unconnected Wires Represents two unconnected wires/conductors. Input Bus Line Represents a bus for input or incoming data. Output Bus Line Represents a bus for output or outgoing data. Terminal Represents start or end point. Bus Line Represents a number of conductors joined together to form a bus wire. SWITCHES Push Button (Normally Open) This switch is in ON state when the button is pressed otherwise it is in OFF state. Push Button (Normally Closed) This switch is initially in ON state. This goes to OFF state when it is released. SPST Switch Single pole single throw is abbreviated as SPST. This acts as ON/OFF switch. Poles define the number of circuits it can be connected to and throws defines the number of positions that a pole connects. SPDT Switch Single pole double throw is abbreviated as SPDT. This switch allows the current to flow in any one of the two directions by adjusting its position. DPST Switch Double pole single throw is abbreviated as DPST. This switch can drive two circuits at a time. DPDT Switch Double pole double throw is the full form of DPDT. This can connect the four circuits by changing the position. Relay Switch This represents the relay switch. This can control the AC Loads using the DC voltage applied to the coil. SOURCES AC Supply This represents AC supply in the circuit. DC Supply This represents the DC power supply. It applies DC supply to the circuit. Constant Current Source The symbol represents an independent current source which delivers constant current. Controlled current Source It is a dependent current source. Usually depends on other sources (voltage or current). Controlled Voltage Source It is a dependent voltage source. Usually depends on other sources (voltage or current). Single Cell Battery This provides supply to the circuit. Multi Cell Battery Combination of multiple single cell batteries or a single large cell battery. The voltage is usually higher. Wave Generators Sinusoidal Generator Represents sine wave generator. Pulse Generator Represents pulse or square wave generator. Triangular Wave Represents triangular wave generator. GROUND SYMBOLS Ground It is equivalent to theoretical 0V and is used as zero potential reference. It is the potential of perfectly conducting earth. Signal Ground It is a reference point from which the signal is measured. There may be several signal grounds in a circuit due to the voltage drops in a circuit. Chassis Ground It acts as a barrier between user and the circuit and prevents electric shock. RESISTOR SYMBOLS Fixed Resistor It is a device that opposes the flow of current in a circuit. These two symbols are used to represent fixed resistor. VARIABLE RESISTOR Rheostat It is a two terminal variable resistor. They are generally used to control the current in the circuit. Generally used in tuning circuits and power control applications like heaters, ovens etc Preset It is a mini variable resistor. It is also called Trimmer Resistor or Trim Pot. The resistance is adjusted with rotary control present on top of it with the help of a screw driver. They are used to adjust the sensitivity of the circuit like temperature or light. Thermistor It is a temperature sensitive resistor. They are used in temperature sensing, current limiting circuits, over-current protection circuits etc. Varistor It is a Voltage Dependent Resistor. It has non-linear current-voltage characteristics. Generally used in circuit protection from voltage surges and excessive transient voltages. Magneto Resistor They are also called as Magnetic Dependent Resistors (MDR). The resistance of magneto resistor varies according to the external magnetic field strength. They are used in electronic compass, ferrous material detection, position sensors etc. LDR They are also called as Photo Resistors. The resistance of LDR varies with the intensity of the light incident on it. They are generally used in light sensing applications. Tapped resistor A wire-wound type fixed resistor with one or more terminals along its length. Generally used in voltage divider applications. Attenuator It is a device used to lower the power of a signal. They are made from simple voltage dividers and hence can be classified in the family of the resistors. Memristor The resistance of memristor is varied according to the direction of flow of charge. Memristors can be used in signal processing, logic/computation, non-volatile memory etc. CAPACITOR SYMBOLS Non Polarized Capacitor Capacitor stores the charge in the form of electrical energy. These two symbols are used for non-polarized capacitor. Non-polarized capacitors are big in size with small capacitance. They can be used in both AC and DC circuits. Polarized Capacitor Polarized capacitors are small in size but have high capacitance. They are used in DC circuits. They can be used as filters, for bypassing or passing low frequency signals. Electrolytic Capacitor Almost all electrolytic capacitors are polarized and hence used in DC circuits Feed through Capacitor They provide low impedance path to ground for high frequency signals Variable Capacitor The capacitance of the variable capacitor can be adjusted by turning the knob. They are widely used to adjust the frequency , that is for tuning. INDUCTORS Iron Core Inductor These are used as substitutes to ferrite core inductors. Ferrite core or Ferromagnetic inductors have high permeability and require air gap to reduce it. Iron powdered core inductors have this air gap integrated. Ferrite Core Inductors Core material, in this type of inductors is made of ferrite material. These are mostly used to suppress the interference of electromagnetic waves. Center Tapped Inductors These are used in coupling of signals, Variable Inductors Movable ferrite magnetic core variable inductors are most common. The inductance is varied by sliding the core in or out of the coil. DIODES Pn Junction Diode A PN junction diode allows the current to flow only in forward bias condition. These diodes can be used in clipping and clamping circuits , as rectifiers in dc circuits etc. Zener Diode In forward bias condition, it acts as normal diode and allows current. It also allows current to flow in reverse bias condition when the voltage reaches a certain break-down point. Generally used in voltage regulator and over voltage protection circuits. Photodiode Photodiode detects the light energy and converts it into current or voltage by a mechanism called photoelectric effect. These are used in CD players , Cameras etc. Led Light emitting diode is similar to PN junction diode but they emit energy in the form of light instead of heat. These are mostly used in indication , lightening applications. Varactor Diode Varactor diode is called varicap or variable capacitance diode. The capacitance of this diode varies according to the applied input voltage. This is used in frequency controlled oscillators , frequency multipliers etc. Shockley Diode This is a four layer diode. This had fast switching operation and hence is used in switching applications. Schottky Diode It represents Schottky diode. It has low forward voltage drop and it can switch rapidly. Used in voltage clamping, rectifiers, reverse current and discharge protection Tunnel Diode This is also known as Esaki diode.It can switch very fastly and can perform well in micro wave frequency range. This is used in oscillator circuits and micro wave circuits. Thyristor It consists of four layers of alternating P and N materials. They act as bistable switches and are used in circuits where high voltages and currents are involved. Constant Current Diode Also called as Current Limiting Diode or Current Regulating Diode. It limits the current to a specified maximum value. Laser Diode The laser diode is similar to light emitting diode. The active region is formed in intrinsic region in PIN structure. Laser diodes find its applications in laser printing, laser scanning etc. TRANSISTOR SYMBOLS NPN It is made of combination of P-type semiconductor between two N-type semiconductors. It is switched ON when the base-emitter junction is forward biased. They are commonly used for amplifying and switching applications. PNP It is made of combination of N-type semiconductor between two P-type semiconductors. It is switched ON when the base-emitter junction is reverse biased. These are used for amplifying and switching applications. JFET N- Channel JFET N-channel JFET is made by n-type silicon bars which form two PN junctions at the side. Majority charge carriers here are electrons. P-Channel JFET P-Channel JFET is made by p-type silicon bar which forms two PN junctions at the side. Majority charge carriers here are holes. MOSFET Enhancement MOSFET The enhancement mode MOSFET has positive gate operation. It induces negative charges into the n-channel and thus number of negative charges increases, enhancing the channel conductivity. Depletion MOSFET The depletion mode has negative gate operation. This decreases the width of the depletion layer. Phototransistor The photo transistor converts the light energy falling on it to its corresponding electrical energy. This can be used in light sensing applications.Base is left disconnected as light is used to enable the flow of current. Photo Darlington Photo Darlington Transistor is similar to phototransistor with very high gain and sensitivity Darlington Transistor This configuration produces high current gain. They are used in power regulators, output stages of audio amplifiers, display drivers etc. LOGIC GATES And Gate This is the basic gate and it implements logical conjunction. The output of the AND gate is high, only if both the inputs are high otherwise both are low. Or Gate The OR gate implements logical disjunction.The output is high if any one of the inputs is high. Nand Gate It is complement of AND gate. The output is low only when both the inputs are high, otherwise it is high. Nor Gate NOR gate is a not OR gate. Output of this gate is high, if both the inputs are Low, otherwise it is High. Not Gate Inverter or NOT gate implements logical negation. This gate inverts the input. Exor This gate implements exclusive OR logic. The output of this gate is high ,if both the inputs are different. Exnor This gate implements negation of EXOR logic. The output of this gate is high , only if the two inputs are identical. Buffer It is an audio signaling device. Generally used in alarms, timers and for confirmation messages. Tri-State Buffer Similar to a normal buffer but with a control signal. In case of active high buffer, it operates normally only when control signal is 1. In case of active low buffer, it operates normally only when control signal is 0. Flip Flop Flip flop is the alsoa memory element but this is a synchronous device. The figure below shows the basic D-flip-flop. AMPLIFIERS Basic Amplifier An amplifier is a device that amplifies a relatively small input signal i.e. it increases the power of the signal. They are used in communication systems, audio devices etc Operational Amplifier Operational Amplifier (Op Amp) is a voltage amplifier with very high gain. The input is differential. They are used in instrumentation devices, signal processing, control systems etc ANTENNA Antenna This symbol belongs to Aerial or Antenna. It converts electrical power into radio waves. It is used in wireless communication to transmit or receive the signals. Loop Antenna Loop antenna is named after its loop like shape of wire or other electrical conductor. They are used as receiving antennas in low frequency range. Dipole Antenna It is most widely used antenna.Generally used in set-top TV, shortwave transmission and FM receivers. TRANSFORMER Transformer Transformer is the basic element that transfers energy in one circuit to the other circuit through electromagnetic induction. They are generally used in electric power applications to increase or decrease the voltage of AC current. Iron Core Uses a piece of magnetic material as core. Generally Ferro magnetic metals like iron are used. The core has high permeability and is used to confine the magnetic field. Center Tapped The center tapped transformer has its secondary winding divided into two parts with same number of turns in each part. This results in two individual output voltages across two line ends. Used in rectifier circuits. Step Up Transformer The no. of turns in secondary winding is more than that of primary winding. The output voltage is higher than input voltage. Significantly used in inverters. Step Down Transformer The no. of turns in secondary winding is less than that of primary winding. The output voltage is lesser than input voltage. It is widely used in low power applications. MISCELLANEOUS Buzzer This is sound producing device. This produces buzz sound when the voltage is applied. Loud Speaker This is also an audio device. The electrical signal is converted into sound signal here. Light Bulb The symbol represents the light bulb. The bulb glows when required voltage is applied. Motor This converts the electric energy to mechanical energy. Fuse Symbol represents the fuse that protects the circuit from over current. Crystal Oscillator Used to generate clock signal of very precise frequency. ADC Analog to Digital converter is used convert analog signals (usually voltage) to digital values. DAC Digital to Analog converter is used to convert digital code to analog signals. Thermocouple It is used to measure temperature.
