So I'm working on a book about my experiences as an autistic trans person overcoming suicidal ideation in a world that would still rather have me dead. It's half memior, half Alice-in-Wonderland fever dream.
Here's a rendition of the cover I have in mind. I quite like it. Might add a couple more details but this gets the point across, I hope.

ARE SIX WORD MEMIOR
For today’s blog, let's talk about this week's activities—This week's activity starts off with a project for a Graphic design class. This project consists of six words to create a memoir. To make us understand what the concept of the project was, we did an activity. For this activity, we split our paper in half. One side was verbs, and the other side was nouns. For the nouns, we had to look around the room and come up with ten nouns. For the other side, we had to describe ten verbs and words that a doctor does. After we were finished, we combined the words together and created a six-word memoir. So, then we had to come up with our own six words to describe us or our life. To start we went on a website called Craiyon to come up with a picture/background that best fit our six words. After we finished finding our AI pictures, we went into Photoshop to construct our design. When in Photoshop we create different designs using our font. For one of my memoirs, I tried to make my words 3D.  Below is one of my finished products which might not be the best but is considered my favorite.

Through these past two weeks I have already learned so much about graphic design and what it takes to be a graphic designer. I am an advertising major but I hope to one day become a creative director. That means that I have to have very strong graphic design skills. While creating my 6 word memoirs, it allowed me to expand my thoughts and work on my copywriting skills. Coming up with the 6 words was not difficult for me. I think that I have at least 30 memiors roaming through my head at all times. However, the things I struggled with more was putting an AI image to match what I wanted to say. It was frustrating when I had a vision in my head and the images the AI created did not match those visions. However, with trial and error, I was able to find the right image to go along with my memoirs. When reading the textbook, I definitely did not expect to be reading about different graphic designers and their experiences. However, I really liked how it was structured because it felt more personal. Hearing about their stories made me feel more passionately about my work and what I want to do in my future. For example, when Arnold Schwartzman said that in order to be a successful graphic desinger you have to bring passion into everything you do, that really resonated with me.

Review: Big Book of Bisexual Trials and Errors by Elizabeth Beier
Tumblr media
So I read some of these back when they were published as individual comics and I gotta say, I LOVE what they’ve done with the expansion into a bigger and frankly better book.
Integrating her earlier comics about dating in the queer world after a breakup with a long term boyfriend, Beier adds new material here that really fleshes out her story.  Its not just a series of vignettes about a lonely girl and the closing of a prominent dyke bar, instead it becomes a journey of self-acceptance and self-love.  As a fat person myself, I was glad to see that her initial internalized fat hatred melted into acceptance.  And that she was able to find love.
With simple and stark black and white drawings, this graphic novel anthology truly deserves to be on the bookshelf of every bisexual woman who loves queer indies.

Reflection Two
Although every piece we’ve read this semester have had their differences, one thing was common among them all: the authors always chose the genre in which there story was written very carefully. Picking the right way to tell a story is just as important as the story itself.
When Bob Dylan chose to utilize poetry to the fullest extent in his songs, the meaning of the stories he told to America became very accessible. His choice to apply these words to folk music wasn’t an accident, either- he became popular at a time folk music was already booming, but ditched the usual narrative of yearning for authentic life and instead used the genre to spread stories of people whose stories otherwise wouldn’t have been heard. When he was awarded the Nobel Prize of Literature in 2016, the concept of literature in and of itself started to expand. Seeing how powerfully it was used by Dylan and musicians after him, some now believe music should regularly hold it’s own place in the realm of Literature.
When Marje Satrapi wrote Perepolis, it’s clear she took this decision seriously as well. Her memior detailed what it had been like to live as a young, independent woman during the Iranian revolution, which is a life full of intricacies that someone in a western audiences (or even some in an Iranian audience) would not be able to understand. However, when Satrapi employs pictures, many things become more clear in her story. We’re allowed to see the extent of the war from the perspective of a child, and we're allowed to see how this affects her emotions with a transparency that you cannot always achieve with words alone. This unique story was read by thousands who would never have been able to gain any sort of perspective on the Iranian Revolution otherwise, and it would not have had nearly as much weight if it were anything but a graphic novel.
The gaming community exhibits endless examples where a conscious consideration of different modes of storytelling is lacking. Even though women make up a large percentage of people who play video games, they are still vastly underrepresented in the games themselves. This contributed to the men players never having to gain external perspective through a video game like any other demographic has. This is important because it can cause them to become indifferent on a lot of issues, even violent ones, in the gaming community. If video games became more representative of their overall audience, this wouldn’t happen nearly as often, and people would finally be able to fully relate to their favorite games.
When writing a story, choosing which way to tell it should be one of the most considered aspects. It depends on many things, but the more fitting of a choice you make, the more you will be able to reach both your message and demographic effectively.
