mr darcy's diary also tried to be more racy/mature than austen but it just ended being needlessly disturbing and/or pathetic. darcy writes IN THE LETTER about how whickham tried to assault georgiana and gets really graphic before realizing a. he shouldn't give personal details about his sister's assault to an unrelated woman b. his crush probably doesn't want to know any of this. and then he went to a brothel for like the third time and had sex with a woman and she reminded him of elizabeth and he started crying. Stocking Stuffer 1/5: A Bajillion Random Painting Recolours
Happy Holidays to all! While I'm proud that last year I finally managed to achieve a longtime goal of sharing a full TS2 Advent Calendar, I'm simply not gonna be able to pull it off this year. Nonetheless, the holidlay spirit has encouraged me to finish up and share a couple of things before the end of the year! I'll be sharing five little gifts over the next few arbitrary days. First up: A BUNCH of Maxis painting recolours.
Tumblr media
One recolour each of A/B/C Stroke (yes, I still enjoy playing with these as three separate paintings) using vintage matchbook covers designed by Saul Bass for The Ohio Match Company.
Tumblr media
Two recolours +frames for Abstrutionism; "Poppy Cake" by Adolf Fényes (1910), and then this edit of Christina's World by Andrew Wyeth (1948) to include Bella Goth (the original Tumblr poster has deactivated).
Tumblr media
A recolour of Anonymous Masterpiece with these two digital paintings by user chestnutroan featuring their farmer Sim and his two alien daughters.
Tumblr media
One recolour of the Arghist Soldier with "Friday Nights" by Deborah DeWit (2006), perfect for your novel-enthusiast Sims' reading nook.
Tumblr media
One recolour of City Skyline with a fruit & veg painting by Twitter user snail_soup (you can buy a real print of this too if you like it!)
Tumblr media
One recolour of the Fourth Element wall scroll with "From Stardust to Stardust - Raccoon" by user ArtOfMienda.
Tumblr media
Four Vegetables recoloured with four deliciously juicy tomato paintings by artist Leah Gardner.
Tumblr media
Geometry 101 recoloured with a beautiful palette knife painting by Lynn Boggess.
Tumblr media
Two recolours of Grilled Cheese (you all know what Grilled Cheese looks like, c'mon); one vintage ad for Hollywood Diet bread which I cleaned/redrew to remove text/graphics, and then "Cloud Rows" by Ivan Eyre (2004).
Tumblr media
In The Beginning (+frame) recoloured with "Little Thief" by Courtney / Trash Kitty Art (also available as an affordable IRL print).
Tumblr media
Kitten vs. Yarn (+frame) recoloured with this goache painting by user ieafy.
Tumblr media
"Until Tonight" by Mark Grantham (2019) slapped on Lady On Red.
Tumblr media
Two recolours of Living Room; "Midwestern Summer Fun" by user ink-the-artist (you may wanna zoom in for a surprise), then "Girl On A Swing" (2000) by Andrew Macara.
Tumblr media
One recolour of Marketing Print with the Beatles as drawn by other Beatles. I don't remember who drew who because I'm actually not much of a Beatles fan but I thought these sketches were really darling.
Tumblr media
In Memory of Johnny Gnome (+frame) recoloured with a piece by Emma Roulette.
Tumblr media
A recolour of My First Holiday with art from Twitter user heikala_art.
Tumblr media
On Pointed Toes (+frame) recoloured with this digital painting by Twitter user catwheezie.
Tumblr media
I fell in love with this Guinness ad so I tweaked it from the photo to fit on the Route 66 poster, then made an accompanying Simlish option.
Tumblr media
A single Scruffles recolour (+frame) with this adorable cow illustration by Twitter user poodlewool.
Tumblr media
Four recolours of the Sim Noir pop art print; three pieces by Al Parker I found through this Tweet (with some English removed) and then an edit of the original painting to look passingly familiar...
Tumblr media
Two recolours (+frames) of Snoozing Enemies; "The Cat on the Pillow" by Adolf von Becker, and "Sleeping Sasha" by Lena Rivo.
Tumblr media
Stiller Life (+frame) recoloured with this oil painting of McDonalds by artist Noah Verrier.
Tumblr media
Two recolours (+frames) of Stumped Hound; "Shadow" by Tianyi Zhou and "cat falling off table" by user anasauruss.
Tumblr media
The Muse recoloured with this Juxtapoz magazine cover by artist Josh Courlas.
Tumblr media
And lastly, three recolours of Untitled (the Bella Goth pop art painting) with works by Hiroshi Nagai.

10 things i thought about while watching SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD
Scott Pilgrim vs The World: Where fighting evil exes is ironically more common than ordering a non-artisanal coffee. It's like a graphic novel on a caffeine high, beating up bad guys while looking effortlessly cool.
Did Edgar Wright edit this movie with a strobe light? The cuts are so fast; it's like the film is on a sugar rush. If my attention span had a nemesis, it'd be this editing style.
Is this a movie or an extended music video? The tunes are catchy, but sometimes I wondered if I accidentally stumbled into a garage band's jam session.
Ramona's hair changes colours more frequently than my commitment issues. But hey, it's all part of the manic pixie dream girl starter pack.
Ramona's hair changes colours more frequently than my commitment issues. But hey, it's all part of the manic pixie dream girl starter pack.
How many extra lives does Scott have? Dude survives epic battles without breaking a sweat, all while maintaining his indie band coolness. Must be the power of a well-coiffed haircut.
The League of Evil Exes: Because nothing says heartbreak like a bass battle or a duel of vegan powers. I bet my ex-boyfriend can't even parallel park.
Can we talk about Wallace Wells? He's the real MVP. Every scene with him is a masterclass in sass. Move over, Scott; Wallace is the true hero of this film.
Scott's life is one convenient coincidence after another. Meeting Ramona at a party, then suddenly facing her exes – it's like destiny if destiny had a quirky sense of humour.
Nega-Scott, the ominous version of Scott. Is he the embodiment of inner demons or just a metaphor for hangovers? Either way, he's the OG dark mode we never knew we needed.

STAR TREK MASTERPOST
hi my name is liz and i'm watching the entirety of star trek in release order, so this post was SIGH inevitable. i will edit with updates it as i make more
FANFIC
Gambler's Knife - AOS, Spirk, 22k. Twelve years after Tarsus IV and three months after dying to realign the warp core and save his ship, Jim Kirk seems to have a new lease on life: he's been resurrected, started pursuing a tentative new relationship with Spock, and has an entire five-year mission ahead of him. That is, until the attempted murder of an old friend forces him to divert the Enterprise away from her intended course and towards Planet Q. After a chance encounter on the planet's surface, new secrets about Jim's time on Tarsus IV come to light—secrets that threaten to destroy everyone he fought to protect, and the new life he's finally achieved. Some things you carry with you wherever you go.
SKIP/WATCH LIST
as i watch star trek, i am making an incredibly detailed spreadsheet which aims to guide new people into what to watch...or what not to watch. this list includes every single movie and tv series (including the animated ones), multiple watch orders (release order vs chronological order), runtimes, content warnings, and indicators on which characters feature in which episodes + indicators on which episodes are important for continuity. the only catch is i am updating it as i go, so it's a verrry slow work in progress. i've also still got a few blanks in the tos bit.
currently the only tumblr post with a link is this one, but i'll make a better post once i've finished going back and filling in the blanks on the tos section.
SPOCKANALIA DIGITIZATION
@maulthots and i are working on digitizing all 5 volumes of SPOCKANALIA - retyping text, cleaning up images, and adding alt text. they'll be added here as we complete them.
Volume 1
EPISODE REWRITES
sometimes star trek makes me crazy and i wanna fix it, but i don't have the time or patience to rewrite it in fic form so we get tumblr posts instead. they are in the order that i did them. right now there are only a few but i want to do like a thousand
[tos] the motion picture
[tos] the tholian web
[tng] violations
META
these are mostly small posts for now. someday i might make big ones.

GRAPHICS
most of these are shitposts.

Thoughts that popped up since I realized W.I.T.C.H. is getting a reboot.
I was in elementary into middle school during the W.I.T.C.H. vs Winx years. My memory of those particular years are pretty vague, but I do remember reading the W.I.T.C.H. novels with the few pages of the graphic novel in the back and watching Winx when I could.
I did enjoy them both, but was 100% on W.I.T.C.H.'s side of the debate. Idk I think that as fun as Winx was, W.I.T.C.H. spoke to me and the other kids my age in a way Winx didn't. Take divorced parents and blended families for example: Will and Stella both have divorced parents, but I really feel like this was portrayed better with Will? The emotions were there and raw. The conflicts through that were up and down, like in real life, instead of just being there for selected episodes?
I'd also like to talk about how the girls are drawn and dressed. I don't actually hold the high-fashion model style of Winx against it, as it was a huge influence on it's creation. Naturally that does have some problematic elements to it, but so does most of media depicting teens looking like young 20s? Symptom, not cause. W.I.T.C.H. also portrays the girls like this. BUT it's done as a transformation-specific thing. Again, not really my favorite thing, but as a pre-pubecent kid / just starting puberty kid, reading how some of the girls would think about how their crushes would like their guardian / adult / "prettier" forms was really relatable? When the girls were not in guardian form, they looked like kids. They dressed like kids. It was nice! Again, I understand that the Winx girls dressed the way they did due to the fashion influence, which I do like as well. It just didn't hit they way W.I.T.C.H. did to kid me.
With what I've seen with the W.I.T.C.H. reboot, being little (but I think is all there is atm?). I don't dislike it. Not in love either. The style is pretty, but feels more generic? The original graphics are so iconic that this doesn't feel like official W.I.T.C.H. to me. I can only hope that the girls are canonically in high school rather than the original 13ish years, considering what they look like. Especially Elyon. She has been yassified a bit. I don't hate it, but I'd hope they don't expect me to think that she's 13. I think that Will, Irma, and Hay Lin could pass as 13, but the others look older. They also did fully "recast" Will's mom, which feels not great? Especially since everyone's colors got lighter? I understand that the colors are just more pastel, but it does feel more like an excuse than and explanation as to why that is...
I don't hate the new guardian look, but the OG is SO ICONIC that this just feels like nothing to me? I do like the bare foot look and incorporation of the elemental icon quite a bit! The new wings... naw. They are pretty and delicate, but the OG.....SO ICONIC! Idk if these wings will also be just for show like in the comics since they seem large enough to work? If I remember correctly, in the comics, the girls can't fly, minus Hay Lin, being the air guardian, until New Power, when their wings are much larger. I like that touch as a physical element showing that the girls still have room to grow.
In any case, I still like both W.I.T.C.H. and Winx, I currently like the OG style over the reboot, water is wet and the sky is blue.

Context for choice 2, 3, 4, 7 and 8. Also I realize I messed up and meant Freddy's Revenge, not Freddy'd Dead
In general, watch this video on all the cancelled
Prequel. So there are two cancelled prequel pitches and my idea for a potential Hannibal type prequel show.
youtube
John Saxon's Elm Street prequel concept
youtube
My little idea for a Hannibal esque prequel. Make it a cat and mouse chase between Donald Thompson and Freddy. We see Donald attempt to catch the Springwood Slasher, all the parents are heartbroken over the dead children and flashes of Freddy’s childhood and how he started. We don’t see Freddy kill the children, we see Freddy talking to and abducting the children and gives the tone that he killed and molested the kids. The last episode of the first season has Thompson capturing Freddy. The second season is his trial. That season ends with Freddy getting off. And the final season is about Thompson and the parents of Springwood hunting and killing Freddy. I would include would be that specific deleted scene that Tina, Rod, Glen and Nancy all had siblings killed by Freddy would be the foundation of it. Maybe even have the jump rope girls be ghosts of his first victims
Peter Jackson's pitch. Peter Jackson's Elm Street 6 was to reduce Freddy to a joke. no longer a threat to be taken seriously, much like how the character was being recognized in the real world at the time. Freddy is now so weak and pathetic that the teens on Elm Street take sleeping pills just to go into the dream world and beat up on him just for fun. Only one teen slips up, giving Freddy the upper hand at the cost of his life. Invigorated by his first kill in ages, Freddy becomes a real threat again, inducing fear and harvesting its energy. Eventually, he gains enough power to hold a police officer hostage in the dream world (and comatose in the real world). This forces one of the lead characters, whose father is a police officer, to enter Freddy's domain, rescue his father, and finally put an end to Freddy.
Freddy vs Jason vs Ash. It's basically the plot of the graphic novel with Ash killing Freddy and Jason being frozen in Crystal Lake. aaand New Line did not want that.
youtube
Beautiful Dream. Okay this was inspired by Leon Thomas video. Okay now deleted video. The basic premise is Nancy is dying and the only way she can be saved is Kristen puts Nancy in a "Beautiful dream" in Leon Thomas video, he proposed New Nightmare was Nancy's Beautiful Dream. However in my version it would be this, inspire by this fanfic.
Nancy Lantz has the perfect life. Her parents are both alive and happily married; she has a budding new career as a child psychologist; she has married her high school sweetheart, Glen; and she is pregnant with their first child, Dylan. Unfortunately for Nancy, a sinister phantasm has begun to plague her dreams, and very soon, it will escape into the waking world, threatening to turn Nancy's beautiful dream into the darkest nightmare. This leads Alice Johnson and her son Jacob, Dr Neil Gordon, Maggie, Doc and Tracey banding together fighting to save Nancy and it would ideally end with Nancy landing the killing blow on Freddy.
Robert Englund's pitch for an Nightmare On Elm Street reboot
"the children of previous victims, or just kids who grew up hearing stories about Freddy Krueger, were each haunted by their own version of Freddy Krueger.”
“Kids who grew up hearing stories about this Freddy Krueger guy and the awful things he did envisioned him in their own way, and that is the version that begins to haunt them. Some people may picture him as stout, another might envision him as tall and thin, another with a different hat, or a different sweater.
“He could have different gloves, or even a glove with small razor blades as referred to in the first movie. It would be neat to see very different interpretations of Freddy Krueger based on the child’s vision of who or what Freddy was to them. After all, each person’s subconscious would picture him in a totally different way.”
“I would have cast different actors to play Freddy for every potential victim,” “Because Freddy is only alive in the imagination of his future victim. They would talk about it at a slumber party or in a locker room at school, or on the bus going home. All we know about this Fred Krueger is he wears a hat, wears a red and green striped sweater and has a clawed hand. That’s the specifics.” “So it could be a red and green cardigan for one Freddy. It could be an old tattered baseball cap for another Freddy. Freddy could be tall, he could be short, he could be overweight, he could be muscular. Every one of the victims could have a different Freddy they imagined. And you could haunt them with that Freddy.” “And then at the end, it would be the ultimate victim and we see Freddy peel [his face] open and maybe it’s yours truly revealed. And it’s the essence of Freddy.”

My least favorite to My favorite books I read in 2022
23: We are totally normal by Rahul Kanakia: Okay first thing first this book made me incredibly uncomfortable; however not because of the sex but because this book did an amazing job capturing how cringe, annoying, and mean highschool students can be which I enjoyed. When books have teenagers I feel a lot of stories feel the need to make them more mature to better fit the plot but in this book they felt like real people you probably went to high school with…take that as you will. Anyways the book is about Nandan who never before liked guys but hooked up with his friend Dave, Nandan starts his journey trying to understand his sexuality. I didn’t love this book but I didn't hate it. I was excited to give it a chance because it seemed pretty heavily disliked. I understand the hate because Nandan is incredibly unlikable at times and I do feel bad for Dave at times because Nandan's actions hurt him, however Nandan is written to be a confused teen and never doesn’t do anything bad on purpose. The ending for me wasn’t my cup of tea and personality. I didn't want Nandan and Dave to get together since I think them being friends works better but not horrible. Overall not my vibe, but it made me laugh at times and I liked the realistic portrayal of teenagers.
22: Honey Girl by Morgan Rogers: First this book cover is beautiful and I love the idea of an workaholic overachiever doing something crazy and reckless as they slowly find themselves and it was sapphic on paper this book sounds amazing…but it was just okay, the book was pretty boring and I practically had to force myself to finish it. Grace Porter, our main character, gets drunk and marries a woman she doesn’t know in Vegas and that sounds really cool but the execution was a huge disappointment. None of the people in Grace's life including her best friends/ roommates, her parents, or even her love interest are written to be very interesting and Grace herself is pretty boring. I did however like the writing style the author chose for this book and the way the author describes the characters, setting, and what and how they feel is written beautifully and I truly enjoyed that. Overall it was pretty mid, My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
21. Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli: I bought this book to get a discount from Barens and Noble not because I wanted it. I haven’t read Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda nor did I see Love Simon so I came into this not knowing anything about Leah or the other characters. Despite that I thought the book was alright, nothing too special and pretty predictable but fine. The book is about Leah who’s getting ready for Prom and preparing to head to college, she’s a plus sized bisexual girl which is great to see and all the side characters are pretty cool. I’m not a big fan of Leah’s personality at times and her romance with Abby is fine and at times really cute, I like Abby encouraging her to pursue art that was nice. I also liked seeing Leah bond with her mom’s boyfriend and find the perfect prom dress that was really nice. Overall cute story. fun characters, and a nice romance, Nick deserved better
20. Across a field of starlight by Blue Delliquanti: Fun space adventure and first graphic novel I’ve read with two non-binary characters as the main character. Fassen and Lu have had a long distance friendship. I loved the artstyle and the diversity but I found the storyline super hard to follow to the point I can’t even give a real description. Fassen and Lu are both cool and I liked the characters but the storyline wasn’t for me. Overall beautiful art but hectic plot.
19. The Prince and the Dressmaker by Jen Wang: Adorable and charming. I really liked the unique art style in this book and the relationship between Prince Sebastian and Frances is very sweet. The graphic novel is about Frances who is a talented seamstress who is secretly hired to make dresses for Prince Sebastian who enjoys wearing beautiful dresses but can’t let anyone including his parents know because of his royal status. Sebastian and Frances' friendship is sweet and I love how they treat each other. I felt like their falling out was forced and I didn’t really understand why Frances was upset, but the last two chapters made me so happy. Overall I loved the artstyle, loved Sebastian and Frances friendship, and loved chapter 11 & 12.
18: The girl from the sea by Molly Knox Ostertag: Morgan and Keltie are adorable and the art style was gorgeous. This sapphic graphic novel is about Morgan who lives on a small island with her mom, little brother, and has friends. After accidentally falling in the ocean she's met by a fish girl named Keltie who she once met when they were both children, after saving her they share a kiss, Keltie then comes into her life saying her love transformed her from a seal to a human girl. It’s cute, it’s silly, and it's sweet. Bittersweet ending but a fun read. Overall sweet sapphic love story, seal girls are better than mermaids.
17. The Gravity of us by Phil Stamper:It’s basically what would happen if the moon landing happened in modern day. We follow Cal, a 17 year old journalist who has to leave his life in Brooklyn to move to Houston when his dad gets a job working as an astronaut at NASA. Cal is probably the most unlikable protagonist I’ve read so far but he gets better as you read the book . The romance between Cal and Leon was really nice and I really like Leon as a character and found him the most relatable. Overall fun read, Leon should have his own book.
16. Conventionally Yours by Annabeth Albert: I love Geeks falling in love. It's my favorite holiday. This book is a duo POV with Alden and Conrad, while I didn’t see it as enemies to lovers as the book is advertised I still really enjoyed it regardless. We follow Alden and Conrad as they go on a road trip together to make content for a YouTube channel they both make appearances on called “Gamer Grandpa” which they play a card game named Odyssey also plan on playing at an tournament to win money and an opportunity to play the game professionally. Learning about both the characters' struggles, family lifes, and why they need to win the tournament all while becoming closer and closer was so fun to read. I really like Alden and Conrad and think they made a cute couple. I'll admit I knew who was gonna win barely half way through the story but that doesn’t matter to me. I liked the romance and where the characters ended up at the end. Overall this book was adorkable and I wished Odyssey was a real game.
15. Out of Characters by Annabeth Albert: More Geeks falling in love but now ex-friends to lovers version. This book is also a duo POV with Jasper and Milo, Jasper was a minor character in Conventionally Yours and in this one he gets his own story where his old childhood friend Milo comes to him needing help after he lost his older brother expensive Odyssey cards in a game. Seeing Jasper and Milo reconnect was adorable and their adventure was so much fun to read. I also loved reading about Milo getting out of his comfort zone, making new friends, and better coming to terms with his sexuality. It was so great and he and Jasper have amazing chemistry. Overall friends to lovers is underrated and I need more books with the characters cosplaying.
14. The darkness outside us by Eliot Schrefer: This book was a mindfuck and I loved every single page. This was one of my first Sci-fi books and it is amazing! Ambrose and Kodiak are both sent into space on a mission, they have no memory of the launch and the only company they have is each other and the ship’s operating system which tells them to do their tasks and encourages them to follow their mission to get on Titian. Since the book is mostly building suspense and leaving small clues leading to the plot twist the romance isn’t that developed but I still think Ambrose and Kodiak are good together and I really liked them. Overall a great book and the ending is so satisfying.
13. You should see me in a crown by Leah Johnson: This book makes me so happy! We follow Liz an black gay teenage girl living in a primarily white and rich neighborhood. She has no interest in popularity but when she finds out the winner of prom queen gets scholarship money that can help her pay for her dream school she starts running and works hard to get votes. I related to Liz so much when it came to friends, her family, and feeling like she needs to protect the people around her. Seeing Liz reconnect with her old friend, make new friends, and her relationship with Mack is just so wholesome. Overall great book and I wish Liz was real so we could be friends.
12. Infinity Reaper by Adam Silvera: This seems hit or miss with some people but I loved it! This is the second book in the Infinity series. It’s hard to explain the plot without spoiling anything from the first book but I really enjoyed it and can’t wait for the next one. Overall Ness is my favorite character and I hope Adam Silvera doesn't kill him.
11. Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller: The Hype is real. It’s the story of Achilles' life Achilles told by his lover Patroclus. The two meet after Patroclus accidentally kills another boy over dice and his father Menoetius banishes him away. The two become friends and later start a romantic relationship. We see Achilles' life from childhood to when he fights in the Trojan war. It's written beautifully and it’s truly heartbreaking. Overall terrific book, Achilles and Patroculs are the best historical gays.
Honorable mention. Rogue Sun volume one: Cataclysm: Okay so this was a book my brother really wanted me to read so I gave it a chance and it was really good. We follow Dylan who is a regular highschool student who recently finds out his father passed away, when going to the reading of his fathers will he finds out his dad was the town's hero named Rogue Sun and he passed down his powers to him. I liked it, I thought it was a good mix of action and real life emotions and Dylan was a great main character and really grew on me, I also thought it had a nice twist. Overall not my usual vibe but I enjoyed it nonetheless
10. I kissed Sara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston: Casey McQuiston has never written a bad book in their life and I kissed Sara Wheeler is great, We follow Chloe green who goes on an adventure to find her academic rival and most popular girl in school Sara Wheeler after she kissed her on prom night then completely disappeared she has the help of Sara’s boyfriend Smith, and another character named Rory who Sara also kissed on prom night. Sara leaves small clues for them to follow to help find where she is. My only real issues is while I like Sara and Chloe I liked the side characters even more and wanted to see more of them, I wanted to see more of Smith’s exploring his identity and his relationship with Rory, other characters like Ash, Benjy, Georgia, and more seem like interesting characters who could’ve been so fun to read if given more attention. Overall fun mystery and I need a second book about Smith and Rory.
9. Red, White, and Royal blue by Casey McQuiston: I’m a basic bitch I know but I really did love this book. This book is about the first son Alex falling in love with the Prince of Wales Prince Henry. I really don’t know what to say about this book that hasn’t already been said but I loved it. This book is super funny and Alex and Henry had immediate chemistry which was so much fun to read. I wish the side characters like Pez, Nora, and June got more attention but since this is a romance I understand why they were sidelined. Overall sweet political romance and obtuse fucking asshole is the most romatic line in any book ever.
8. One last stop by Casey McQuiston: It’s probably slightly controversial having One Last Stop ranked higher than Red, White, and Royal blue but the main reason I ranked it higher is because I loved every single character and felt like everyone one had a nice conclusion unlike Red, white, and Royal blue and I kissed Sara Wheeler where I wanted more attention on the side characters. I also loved seeing August and Jane's relationship build while also trying to help Jane understand what happened to her and seeing August find herself on the way was great. Overall another great mystery by Casey MCQuiston, I’m a sucker for sapphic romances
7. Extraordinaries by T.J.Klune: This book is the reason I downloaded back Tumblr it fucking amazing! Gay superheroes, fanfiction, and a main protagonist who is hilarious and relatable this book is fucking awsome. We follow Nick Bell who is the biggest fan of a neighborhood superhero named Shadow Storm who fights his arch rival Pyro Storm. In this world people who have super powers are called Extraordinaries and Nick desperately wants to be extraordinary and to make his fanfiction come true by being with the super hero of his dreams. I’ll admit I didn’t love Nick much at first but she really grew on me. Not only is the book great but it also has great ADHD rep and LGBTQ rep. Overall my favorite superhero novel better than marvel movies
6. Every word you never said by Jordon Greene: This wins for having the prettiest cover I currently own. This book is also a duo POV following Skyler Grey an nonverbal boy who was just recently adopted and enjoys wearing skirts and dresses and Jacob Walters who recently came out and dealing with shitheads because of it including his own father. The book is about Skyler fighting for his right to express himself when Jacbo’s own father tries to make rules to stop him from doing so. Skyler and Jacob are adorable and seeing them get closer and closer was heartwarming. However the book does talk a lot about politics and the ugly side of christianity which made me feel uneasy at times but the romance and message was so strong I couldn’t help but love it. Overall clothes have no gender!
5. Winter Orbit by Everina Maxwell: To be completely honest this is probably the best written book I’ve read all year. The writing, story building, character building, and explaining of the politics of the world was written, in my opinion of course almost perfectly. The book is about Kiem and Jainan who are forced to marry to seal an alliance between their respective empires after Jainan pervouse partener was killed suddenly. However it becomes more complicated when a Jainan becomes a person in interest in his death. Admittedly the romance in this book is pretty secondary in the story and is mostly about Jainan and Kiem trying to prove Jainan is innocent, I still liked the romance tho and seeing Kiem being sweet and patient with Jainan who has a lot of unresolved trauma was nice. My only issue is that the book felt kinda slow at times but the end result is totally worth it. Overall I felt smart reading this book. Kiem is a sweet cinnamon roll who deserves the world.
4. Delilah Green Doesn’t Care by Ashley Herring Blake: I don’t usually like adult books but this is a huge expectation. This book is a romance between Claire Sutherland who is a single mom with an eleven-year-old daughter dealing with an undependable ex-boyfriend and Delilah Green who is hired to be her estranged step sister Astrid photographer at her wedding. Delilah had it tough growing up with losing her mom, dad, and living with her uncaring step mother and Claire had her own issues with being a single mom and dating. Delilah and Claire are sweet together and I really liked their relationship and it was a nice story. My only issues is that there is a side plot where Claire and another mutual friend of her and Astrid wants to stop her from marrying her dick head fiance and that pretty much goes nowhere in favor of the romance, I love Delilah and Claire’s romance but I would’ve liked to see more of then trying to talk sense into Astrid. Overall Cute and spicy sapphic romance can’t wait to read Astrid Parker doesn’t fail next year.
3. Heat Wave by T.J. Klune: FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC ending to the extraordinaries, The dad squad had my entire heart, seeing everyone work together to stop Simion evil plan of taking over Nova city was epic and the epilogue at the end its probably the best epilogue I’ve ever read in a book. However I wasn’t a big fan of the ending and what they decided to do to Owen and I hated how they kept talking about how “You shouldn’t see things as Evil vs. Good because things are more complicated than that” when Simion was very clearly evil and had only bad intentions but with the great plot twist, sweet moments, and of course the amazing epilogue I was able to get past it and enjoy a great conclusion to a great series. Overall this series was extraordinary and Jazz is a badass.
2. Flash Fire by T.J. Klune: This is more just me. I tend to like the second book in trilogies the most and this wasn’t any different. Seth is my favorite character and in Flash fire he gets more attention and I loved that. This is also when we learn more about Nick’s mom Jenny who passed away 3 years ago and Nick learns more about himself, in this we learn more about Simion’s plans, we also meet new characters like Mateo/ Miss Conduct, Jerry the burrito guy, and T.K who are all introduced in a cool and funny way. Overall Second time is always the best and Pyro Storm is bae.
1. Cinderella is dead by Kalynn Bayron: Words can’t describe how much I love this book but I will try. This new dark retelling of Cinderella's story takes an unique and cool spin on a classic. We follow Sophia who lives in a world 200 years after Cinderella found her prince charming and “Lived happily ever after” Ever since the king forces the people in the village to live their lives following Cinderall’s story. Sophia has no interest in marrying a man and would rather marry her childhood friend Erin but is forced to go to an annual ball and find a husband or else. I love this fast paced story about fighting the patriarchy and learning the real story of Cinderella. Sophia and Constance bounce off each other perfectly and I love their chemistry, not much romance but the book was so good it honestly doesn’t bother me. I loved this book so much and it’s my absolutely favorite book in 2022. Overall I loved a dark retelling and Sophia is a girlboss.

Completed my sixth read of 2024 in a single day because I fell behind on my Goodreads challenge and panicked. Now I'm caught up but also have read so many books in the last week I think I might die.
As promised, I’m tracking my reading/ratings of each book as I finished them in 2024 here with you all! I will be tracking all of my book reading ratings and thoughts with #halislibrary if you would like to block the tag/don’t want to see these!
Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Completed: February 19, 2024
BOOK DETAILS
Stand-alone novel
This is absolutely not for the faint of heart - it is a futuristic society in which cannibalism is turned into an industry and is the standard
224 pages
Cannot emphasize enough this book is brutal and graphic like please look up warnings before reading.
READ IF YOU LIKE:
Symbolism about humanity vs. it's violent nature
Insane dystopian vibes
Not knowing where the narrative is going to go next
Thought pieces - this had my mind churning and genuinely engaging and thinking about people/animals/baser instincts
THINGS THAT BOTHERED ME:
This book is interesting because of its concept/world but the story did not have a firm point of view and the main character's story/pov was not strong enough to lack the commentary/allusions to real life.
Plot twist at the end did nothing for me - felt like the intent was shock value and nothing else.
I think because it is so obvious in using gore and shock value to make it's point, I just found it kind of flat.
Note: I did like this book but I felt like it didn't do what it thought it was doing. There was not actually a point of view and there was no attempt to unpack anything. While I don't need there to be a moral standpoint/argument to make violence make sense, it does need to be clever/well done and the violence and brutalism in this wasn't clever enough to do without.

🌟Mfred's Best Books of 2022🌟
Comfort Me with Apples by Cathrynne M. Valente
Original Review
It’s a fairy tale retold, a myth re-examined. It’s a mystery, a thriller, and a horror story. But it’s so much more, too. I was mesmerized - trying to understand what was going on, then understanding too much, with a dawning sense of horror at how it would all end.
The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo by Kerrigan Byrne
Original Review
This book put me through the wringer, you guys. I came out the other end definitely dehydrated from crying so much, but also filled to the brim with love and life.
Even Though I Knew the End by CL Polk
Sapphic. Urban Fantasy. Noir. Do I need to say more? OK, I will anyway! Chicago in the winter. Dames smoking Chesterfields and hunting serial killers. Underground queer nightclubs. And magic! And a swoony romance!
Hell Followed With Us by Andrew Joseph White
Original Review
Don’t be fooled, Benji is really turning into a monster. White pulls no punches. Bloody, gruesome, and terrifying. It’s so queer, so righteously angry, so necessarily vengeful. But it also holds a place for the tenderness and hope we all need to truly survive.
Thirteens by Kate Alice Marshall
A spooky and super creepy Halloween read, especially for a children’s book! Plus, the power of friendship, loyalty, and believing in yourself.
The Mind and the Moon: My Brother's Story, the Science of Our Brains, and the Search for Our Psyches by Daniel Bergner
Challenges the science behind mental illness and standard pharmaceutical treatments. At once eye-opening, engrossing, and also emotional.
A Mirror Mended by Alix E. Harrow
Lucky you! If you didn’t read the first in this series, you now get to read both amazing books! This time we see what happens when the Evil Queen wants a better ending to her story. And also what it means to survive a happy ending.
My Killer Vacation by Tessa Bailey
Original Review
I loved Myles. I loved his struggle. Every time Taylor did or said something, his heart clenched or he got sweaty or he desperately wanted to kiss her. He’s big, he’s tattooed, he’s unshaven and rides a motorcycle and he is a total dummy about his emotions. It’s great.
Paper Girls, Vols 1-6 by Brian K. Vaughn, Cliff Chiang, Matt Wilson, & Jared K. Fletcher
Friendship! Time travel! The 1980s! A war between teenagers vs. grownups! This graphic novel series has it all. And the artwork is amazing.
Patricia Wants to Cuddle by Samantha Allen
Ok, how do you feel about The Bachelor? Cryptids? Horrifically funny violence? This book is so weird and also so, so amazing.
Runaway Girl by Tessa Bailey
A poor little rich girl who really isn’t and a bear of a man dealing with unimaginable loss. Slow burn but awesome tension and chemistry throughout. Plus, the emotional wallop of falling in love. Everything good about romance novels.
Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison
Original Review
Amazing. A novel about anger, trauma, families, romance, trusting others, and werewolves. It really takes a good, hard look at why and when and how and how often we get angry– and how we treat others and ourselves when we rage. The werewolf metaphor is grrrreat (see what I did there?) for examining what it means to be an angry woman, in/out of control.
We Keep the Dead Close: A Murder at Harvard and a Half Century of Silence by Becky Cooper
Original Review
It took me almost two months to finish this book. But it wasn’t boring or slow. In fact, for such a lengthy book, it’s a real page turner. And it’s a fascinating blend of true crime, non fiction and memoir– how Cooper finds her own voice in the story of Jane Britton’s murder.

Note
so we already know how lucius' house feels abt horror movies but id love to know who else are horror haters vs horror enjoyers? and for the enjoyers which is their favorite subgenre
Ooooh fun. So you know my baseline, I love reading horror, like watching some kinds of it. Haunting of Hill House, both the original book, the black and white movie and the fucking amazing Netflix series are very much my jam. I'm meh on Stephen King, but absolutely love Clive Barker.
Lucius- No horror, no thanks, except that he does on occasion watch a slasher film because it's on. Not because he likes them, you understand. Sometimes things just fall in front of your eyes. He does read horror novels occasionally. It's his travel genre and lately he's been digging into Joe Hill's earlier work.
Pete- Loves them! All kinds of horror films. He likes other kinds of movies too. Sometimes if they get really really gory he might take a step back, but of course they never really scare him. Pete doesn't get scared! He might get a little more cautions. That's all.
John- Also loves them! But is very easily spooked. He can only watch them with other people and definitely prefers jump-scare style churned out sequels. He has seen a ton of slashers. More art house kind of horror actually scares him even more. Midsommer took about a week off his life.
Frenchie- No. Nope. Not interested, not even a little, thanks. Aliens and ghosts are real and you do not fuck with that shit. He will not hear that some horror movies are not about about those things, it's a blanket no. He has, however, seen all of Hannibal and really loves it. Will not accept that it's technically horror.
Jim- They would never admit it in a million years, but they saw Sixth Sense as a kid and it gave them nightmares for weeks. They absolutely will not watch a horror movie if they can figure a way out of it.
Oluwande- Not his thing. He will if other people want to see it and be okay with it, but he's not looking for it. He does like campfire ghost stories and urban legends though. When he was a kid, he read a ton of R.L. Stine. He and Roach have an inside joke about Mothman.
Stede- Loves a creature feature, the more vintage the better (he did get Alma started on them after all). Always had a soft spot for Swamp Thing. He saw the Ed Wood biopic several times. Many times. Let's not dissect that. He has a low tolerance for anything bloody, will not watch anything with torture in it. He's the Shirley Jackson fan of the bunch, but his favorite is We Have Always Lived in a Castle.
Eddy- Omnivore movie watcher thanks to years of insomnia in hotel rooms, so they've seen a lot of horror along with everything else. She comes in on the more 'no thanks' side these days. Once they bought Pan's Labyrinth on pay-per-view without knowing what it was and wound up watching it all the way through twice. They still think about it sometimes and aren't sure why. Maybe it's the eyeballs in the hands thing.
Alma- Has and will watch anything she can get her hands on. She especially loves monster movies because those are her roots, but she has branched out and is not deterred by subtitles. Vampire movies are probably her all time favorite and even though it's not really horror, her all time fave vampire flick is Only Lovers Left Alive.
Roach- Eh. It doesn't scare him, but he doesn't much like it either. Does absolutely love a cryptid though. He doesn't think they're real, but...what if they were, you know?
Izzy- He likes mysteries which can sometimes verge into horror territory. Also he likes Hitchcock a lot. He's got a black and white film sensibility all the way around. A lot of the mystery series he reads verge into pretty graphic horror like territory too, especially the serial killer stuff. He really liked the Archie Sheridan and Gretchen Lowell series by Chelsea Cain.
Charlie- Cannot watch even a single minute, but can read the absolute goriest stuff imaginable. The book he mentions to Izzy in the latest chapter is real by the way. Dan Wells 'I Hunt Killers' series is supernatural Dexter for teens and it's great and Charlie loves it.
Buttons- Never watches them, but was once an extra in a zombie movie and they let him keep his costume so he has that in his closet. Also, he was once mistakenly spotted and reported as cryptid on a reddit forum.

What media & content to study for my Maynard software toy(-kit?)
Ya, that's alot of content to learn from.
First Person Perspective
Quake 1 / Xonotic / Red Eclipse / Tesseract / Cube 2 Sauberbraten... (slipgates, scenario scripting interpreter on runtime and absolutely open to modding for every single system in the game thanks to the entire stack being open source)
Resistance Fall of Man (part of its color palette especially for diagetic amber retro GUI/UX, initial darker arc that goes upwards to hope later on, unravelling longer connected history secrets, excavation of historical relics to further one's end, preservation vs progress metric)
Epistle 3 (broader vibe of the series, time travel paradigm through the Borealis, gender swapping, )
Quake 4 (Tweaking the Stroggification process into some transformation that is much more handsome and way less gruesome)
Halo 2 (the alien arbiter's redemption arc + complicated alien politics)
Halo Reach / Portal 2 (far away future dynamics and sapient rebellious unrest)
Wolfenstein The New Order (dystopian aesthetic flavor & alternate history path)
Duke Nukem 3D (EDUKE32 & BUILD2 counts in that department)
Ion Fury (Female protagonist & innovation within retro contraints; Aftershock & Phantom Fury counts as well)
Cyberpunk 2077 (mechanics, quests, overall vibe of going against the systems in place despite working gigs for those same structures, generic future technological level)
Simulation
Micropolis / original Simcity (overall aesthetic and runtime asset/level editing glory)
SimCity 4 (mechanics, connectivity with other cities and other engines, moddability...)
The Sims 2 (life simulation framework, family-building, moddability, the CC community, the customizability of everything*)
FreeCiv (open source, retro Civilization game rules, world sizes and civ numbers in vast quantities, Lua scripting, in-game level editor...)
Civilization 5 Complete Edition (external SDK tools, entire game loop, world generation in high resolution hexagonal grid, a couple of custom and built-in map scripts, strategic mapmode, technological tree with 'G&K'+'BNW', community content, )
Civilization 6 (some loyalty system, climate change, diplomacy in the end-game, districts and other novel simulation aspects)
Crusader Kings 2 (dynamic agentive intrigues in real time, pausable time, historical bookmarks...)
Europa Universalis 3 (graphics, complete-ness, early modern era onwards, Protestant Reformation, enlightenment period, abundance of focus sliders, alternate history threads...)
Abstract
4D Toys / Miegakure (simple environment with composite 4D objects, manipulation of fourth dimension objects with interesting properties, playground world...)
Citizen of Rome Dynasty Ascendant (endless life simulation, accurate historical considerations, subjective goal-oriented playstyles...)
Hypnospace Outlaw (network and knowledge exploration + instigation as strong gameplay loop incentive, connection to other fictional realms, emulating much of the year 2000...)
Factorio (creativity, computer simulation, ultra deep technological mechanics, abundance of diverging workflows for similar tasks, several recipes and several ways to do things...)
'TIS-100' / 'Shenzhen I/O' (classic Zachtronics formula, custom levels, optimization metrics, fairly decent to complete but encouraging to optimize further, prices, time-sharing, limited processing power, instructions, meta/self-awareness aspect)
Baba Is You (keyword manipulation, interpreter like environment, moddability and abundance of custom levels)
The Elder Scrolls 2 Daggerfall (densely inhabited fictional world, complex skills and wider world design)
Mercenaries Playground of Destruction (many factions to trade and interact about, a shared baseline opponent, territorial control, vehicular combat and other props shop)
Before note-taking form gameplay sessions thread
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The aesthetic I shall use is pretty much the one I utilize on my blog most of the time, the one with retro cartoon vector layered sectors, volumetric 3D geometric elements, with as little anti-aliasing as possible, using NPR stylized N64+Dreamcast Cel-rendering, warm soft yet dark wooden colors, and other things to make for a synthesis of many eras. And I do still am figuring the level layouts to empathize most but I do have some demo suggestions like Poolrooms, forested areas, homes and other sector layouts. So to amount towards a worldly geometric terrain wrapped around on one axis to make a curved cylindric world from QGIS files into Qodot levels.
But I feel like this manifesting game is about integrating into this alternate world, interacting with the many factions that will keep varied relationships with you and building yourself up onto those byzantine politics to instigate positive, constructive, incremental changes.

Rules: tag 10 people you want to get to know better
Tagged By: @moonygyal - Hi! thank you 😁 this seems fun
-Favorite Time Of Year: Fall/Autumn🍁, I just like the word autumn over fall, the weather is so nice I can wear my denim coat with all my pins, I can still wear tank tops and everything looks so beautiful at that time, green trying to stick around through the browns, tans, yellows, oranges and reds! Just so nice to watch and sit around.
-Comfort Food: gummy bears/worms 🧸 are my go to when I feel like crap. Ive wanted one of those 10lb gummy worms 🐛 for years!!! I would probably eat it all in less than a week 😅
-Do You Collect Something: Rocks!! ⛰️ 😂 I love different shapes and sizes and colors, the fact that you can find an "ugly" rock and smash it (or cut it in half properly) and it can contain a whole new world or beauty inside, crystals, minerals and just fun formations in the stone.
Hint, most "ugly" bumpy craggley oval or round stones are probably geodes. If you're lucky you can hold these up to your ear and shake them and you can sometimes hear dirt and debris rattling up against the inside to confirm without cutting or smashing.
-Favorite Drink: Strawberry anything 🍓, milkshakes, soda, tea, bubba. I'm sure everyone I know would say coffee tho 😂
-Favorite Song/Artist: Stevie Nicks!! ❤️ Landslide makes me cry but I love it and Edge of Seventeen is just my favorite. I love Fleetwood Mac too but Stevie was my first crush and I saw that picture of her in the white dress with doves around her and thought she was a real life angel as child. Like touched by an angel style angel. Good show btw 🤷 preachy ofc but good
-Current Favorite Songs: Ocean Eyes - Billie Eilish, Fever - Angèle and Dua Lipa, Levitating - Dua Lipa, You - Evanescence, Good Riddance (Time of your life) - Greenday
-Favorite Fic: Not sure about this one, been awhile since I read a fic or webtoons. When I left off I was loving
All webtoons
Space boy by Stephen McCranie
Muted by Miranda Mundt
Hookey by Míriam Bonastre Tur (finished, has book form for sale)
Always Human by Ari North (finished, has book for sale she also has a lovely Tumblr, @walkingnorth visit her page for more great projects)
Just a nice shout out for a feel good graphic novel, Lost At Sea by Brian Lee O'Malley the creator of Scott pilgrim vs the world.
-So bad at this part cause I don't actually interact with many people so tagging people I reblog alot and find interesting: @lionfloss @ssweetfuckingpoisonn @xhaleyyy @loveaffxir @peace-and-plants @im-the-lesbian-aunt @tobehappyy117 @decaffeinatedgirlswim @hopperz221 @100xsuns

SMUT in YA
I've been seeing this conversation all over social media recently. Young women mostly posting about how SMUT should absolutely NOT be in YA. Usually with some funny little "shh, shh" as they wink at the camera, or a silly "tell me why" face as if they're expecting people in the comments to out themselves as pedophiles.
But here's the thing...I'd really like these people to define smut, and maybe drop some examples of it that they think they're finding in YA.
"...you can’t possibly have an honest portrayal of male adolescence that doesn’t include the significant current of sexuality. Sorry, it can’t be done unless you’re writing about non-human, inanimate, asexual males. And I know kids who define themselves as asexual, but that designation in itself says something about sexuality." Andrew Smith
I'm sure we can all agree books made especially for teenagers should not be pornographic. Nobody is arguing that. But also, what is YA?
Is it any book with a main character who is a teenager?
Because some of my favorite authors (like the above, Andrew Smith) have said they don't write for kids, they write for readers. I had the honor of hearing him speak, and he talked about how his books had gotten banned (something that is happening all too frequently now) and that the reason most of his characters are teen boys is because that's the time of his life where his emotions were at their height. That's where all the drama was.
But let's get back to sex. Or as BookTok is calling it now, SMUT.
Smut is an almost silly word when you're talking about guilty pleasure books with your adult friends, but when used to describe YA it most defiantly is a hard negative. And here's why.
Kids should be protected.
We all know this.
We all get this.
But from what exactly? Why are books the first to be censored?
I have yet to see a TikTok, or parent at a school board meeting argue on why kids shouldn't be reading about genocide.
Deogratias, A Tale of Rwanda, is a graphic novel on my high school library shelves and has never been challenged.
"Well, it's real!" you could argue. (And believe me, people do. argue that. As if sex is a made-up thing.)
It's history, so it should be represented. And you know - I agree.
However, the first time I read Deogratias, it was so disturbing, it made me nauseated. I cried on my way home from work that day. Whenever I see the book, I still get a sick feeling in my belly. And that's OKAY. It's a story with graphic visual depictions of rape and murder and dismemberment. These things happened. So, it's on the shelf.
My students read The Bluest Eye, by Toni Morrison, Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler, not to mention Shakespeare, Stephen King, and texts on slavery and every American War.
But the sex-ed books were pulled from my shelves this year.
Books that say sex can be good and safe, if you're informed.
The rape books stayed of course.
I can't help but wonder if the difference is female pain vs. pleasure.
Now we have these TikTokers. As if conservative school boards aren't loud enough.
But what could be wrong with wanting to keep "smut" out of kids books?
Save the kids!
We heard this when they wanted to integrate schools. SAve the kids!
We heard this when they wanted to deny gay marriage. SAve the kids!
It seems like everyone wants to "Save the Kids" when it's something as simple as keeping them ignorant.
Cause here's the thing...What is smut?
If we remove every book from the high school that has sex in it. Is that enough?
What about books where a person debates losing their virginity?
That would probably be a pretty useful thing for a teenager to read about, but is that smut?
If we take out the sex, but only the good sex, mind you, do we also take out hand jobs? Blow jobs? Oh... it's ALL sex. ALL SEX IS SMUT. Okay, what about a book in which a girl looks over her naked body in a mirror? That's body image, but is that too much?
What about books on health? What to expect as you grow? Body changes?
What about books on menstral cycles, and nocturnal ejaculations?
We can't have the kids knowing too much!
And while we're at it....the queer books too.
They're sexual by nature right?
Let me just remind the younger ones. The ones who think they're liberal, but are perfectly fine with the rallying cry of "KEEP SMUT OUT OF YA".
Cause I can tell you, that's where it always starts. With a vague definition of morality, and censorship for the kids.
I would like to understand what books you're really worried about.
Would a child reading about sex before they're ready cause them more mental trauma then reading about teen suicide? Because I've been a YA librarian for over a decade and have yet to read what I'd call smut in any young adult book. To be fair, I have read about sexual exploration. Body image. Consent. Non-consent. Incest. Love. Rage. Friendships. Family. Infatuation. Hope.
This is life! Young adults are just that; they're burgeoning on adulthood, and books are a safe place. Even scary books. This is where they should learn- in their libraries.
I find this infatuation with the inherent perverseness of sex so purely American puritanical, that the only way sex is allowed in the library is if it's traumatic.
Boys in books talking about rape culture is a lesson/ girls in books learning how to masturbate is smut. Why must someone be punished for it to be permissible? Why must we flagellate ourselves as if we're still in the dark ages?
Because I promise you, this is us taking the fast track back to the days where women weren't even allowed to check out biology books.
First, we "protect" kids. Then we "protect" women. Then only those in charge decide what is "need to know".
Fight the real problem in society. Cause it's not the books.
